Those are among the many questions tackled by journalist Stephen Dubner and economist Steven Levitt over the years, since their bestselling book Freakonomics came out in 2005. We'll talk with Dubner about the duo's book and podcast empire which aims to reveal “the hidden side of everything” and about whether the field of behavioral economics has lived up to its promise. And we'll dive into Freakonomics Radio's recent series on the legal marijuana industry, and why it's such a mess. Guests: Stephen Dubner, Freakonomics Radio host and best-selling author

Chapter 1:Summary of Freakonomics"Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything" is a non-fiction book written by economist Steven D. Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner. It was first published in 2005 and explores the underlying economics and hidden motivations that drive various aspects of human behavior. The book challenges conventional wisdom by using economic analysis to uncover peculiar, puzzling, and sometimes controversial truths about everyday life and societal issues. The book is structured around several key questions, each of which forms the basis of a chapter that provides unexpected economic insights:1. What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? This chapter discusses how incentive systems can lead to cheating. The authors use data analysis to show patterns of cheating among Chicago schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers in Japan.2. How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like a Group of Real-Estate Agents?Levitt explores how information asymmetry can be used to wield control and power. He draws parallels between the Ku Klux Klan, whose power waned when their secret information was exposed, and real-estate agents who have a knowledge advantage over their clients.3. Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live with Their Moms?Levitt analyses the income hierarchy within drug-dealing gangs, discovering that the economic structure closely resembles that of a conventional business, but with most lower-level dealers earning below minimum wage, contrary to popular belief of lucrative profits.4. Where Have All the Criminals Gone?Perhaps the most controversial chapter, it posits that the sharp drop in crime rates in the U.S. during the 1990s was significantly influenced by the legalization of abortion following the Roe v. Wade decision, which led to fewer unwanted children who would have been at higher risk of becoming criminals.5. What Makes a Perfect Parent?By examining data, Levitt suggests that parenting strategies aren't as influential on a child's academic success as demographic factors and the parents' education levels.6. Perfect Parenting, Part II; or: Would a Roshanda by Any Other Name Smell as Sweet? This section discusses the socioeconomic patterns and impacts of naming children, revealing how names chosen for children differ across social and racial lines and how they could potentially impact a child's future. The common theme across all chapters is that economic tools and analysis can reveal the unexpected truths about the complex behaviors and operations of society. Levitt and Dubner's approach provides readers with a new perspective on how to think about the world, encouraging them to question the way things are and to understand better the factors that influence personal and societal decision-making.Chapter 2:The Theme of Freakonomics"Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything" is a nonfiction book written by economist Steven D. Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner. Rather than a traditional novel with a plot and character development, "Freakonomics" examines a series of economic concepts and social theories through the lens of unconventional questions and scenarios. The book explores the hidden side of various interesting and, at times, mundane phenomena of everyday life. Below are some of the key themes, explored concepts, and intriguing questions that "Freakonomics" addresses:1. Incentives: A major theme throughout the book, Levitt and Dubner explore how incentives (financial, social, and moral) drive people to do what they do. From teachers cheating on standardized tests to real-estate agents selling their own homes, the concept of incentives is pivotal in understanding human behavior.2. Information Asymmetry: Another key theme, information asymmetry deals with situations where one party in a...

When Freakonomics co-authors Steve Levitt and Stephen Dubner first met, one of them hated the other. Two decades later, Levitt grills Dubner about asking questions, growing the pie, and what he learned from Bruce Springsteen.
In episode 92 of Climb In Consulting Nick speaks with Jonathan Davis, managing director at Avaloq. Jonathan started his career at Anderson Consulting in the late 1980s where he managed to get his foot in the door despite not having the educational success of many of his peers. June 2, 2021Dave Lankes & Mike EisenbergAre we going back to offices and city living or will a new normal emerge? Judging from the articles and posts, it's not clear at all. That means it's likely to be a combination of both depending on contexts of nature of activity (e.g., business), geography, and the economics (jobs, commerce, supply chain). With uncertainty prevailing, what should libraries be thinking about and planning for? As an added bonus, our production manager, Yoni Yemini, from ACE Chicago Events joins us to share his thoughts on how things are changing for his business. In Wazzup, Dave talks about the challenges to libraries, communities, and library & info science education due to the continually changing Covid situation. Mike points out the information aspects of vaccination verification with examples from the EU and New York State. Dave's Awesome Library Thingy was the Next Library Festival that was held on June 3rd, 2021, and Mike highlighted a NY Times article about museums post-covid, particularly the opportunities for new forms of programming and partnering.References & Resources WazzupStevis-Gridneff, Matina.

"Whatever you're dealing with, it's what makes you strong. Where you think you're weak, where you are anxious, fearful, nervous, because you don't understand you value because no one ever helped you have that value to understand that confidence and say, I. Am, Enough." My guest is Ken Dubner, a master hypnotherapist. He is a frequent lecturer at ucla school of dentistry and the American Hypnosis Association. He is the founder of the Life Formula Method to help people break free from the self-imposed prisons and step into their power. Ken talked about his superpower as a hypnotherapist involves his humor, involves his personality, involves his total openness about his history, which most therapists don’t do. He said: “I'm delightful, I'm engaging. I'm funny as fuck because I was a comic when I was in my twenties. So part of my superpower is my ability to make most people feel comfortable cause I'm so upfront and irreverent around my own struggle and because I'm free and they want to be free like that. He is unapologetically himself and he wants to teach everyone else to be that. That's his mission in life. We talked about: * How he bulletproofs his mind where he gets excited on stage where someone else gets frightened * Transmitting your greatest weaknesses into your greatest strengths * The 3 steps to fundamentally shift your belief system * How to be unapologetically you * How to foster owning your accomplishments * The psychology of confidence * Different levels of depression * Being adaptive and maladaptive in life * The comparison between martial arts and mental health * The safety protocol he uses to put his people in psychological safety in minutes * The importance of reminding people of their heroic progress Please enjoy my conversation with Ken Dubner.

Does legal abortion reduce the crime rate? That's the argument made by economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner in their bestselling book Freakonomics. Levitt and Dubner argue that: The demographic most likely to have abortions--impoverished, inner-city minorities--is also the demographic most likely to commit crime. The crime rate dropped dramatically 20 years after Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in all 50 states. The Freakonomics hypothesis asserts that the unwanted children who would have reached the prime of their criminal careers in the 1990s were instead aborted, resulting in a drop in crime. It's an insane--and racist--theory, but one that has surprisingly been taken seriously by many abortion advocates. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, we sink our teeth into the Freakonomics abortion-crime hypothesis and answer the question: Does legal abortion reduce crime?
KEY IDEAS: We are going to re-define "retirement" this week and show you how to get there immediately! "RETIREMENT" Our new definition of retirement is not the absence of work. It is the thrill of waking up in the morning and doing what you want to do. When we are in a job that is not the correct fit, we wake up and do what we have to do. Or, we do what someone else wants us to do. According to the United States' Census, farmers comprise the second oldest average age of any career type in the U.S. One of the reasons this is, is that so many people dream of farming. So, they "retire to farming." When they are finally free of the shackles of their day job, they get their pension, buy a farm and start living their dream. These people have re-defined retirement. They are not ceasing to work. They are doing extremely challenging work, but it is work that they want to do. They are waking up and doing what they want. My question for you is, why wait until you are 60 or 65 years old to start retirement? Why not start right now? Can you find something that you want to wake up and do every day? If so, why not do it now? It is the exact same thing you are going to do when you retire and finally get to live your dream. Do you ever see yourself giving up your dream of farming to "cease to work?" If not, why not start now? How will this harm you? FREAKONOMICS - RETIREMENT KILLS: A NEW MARKETPLACE PODCAST Stephen J. Dubner did an episode of Freakonomics about retirement. In this episode he shows that people who retire early and "cease to work" actually die sooner than those who keep working. Luckily for you and me, we are going to "work" in retirement, but it will be doing something we want to do. Don't get focused on some arbitrary date where you get to "cease working." Know that you are going to "work" for the rest of your life because you love agriculture. So, what is the harm in starting now? It's not like you are going to ruin your retirement and "have to work longer." You are going to work longer anyway, by choice! Do it now! CONTENTMENT: What we are really looking for is "contentment." We want to get to the point that we are happy with what we have, and if we never bought another material possession we would be just as happy. When you reach this point, the amount of disposable income you need to maintain your lifestyle decreases. This makes it possible for you to make this transition. Your variable expenses shrink because you are in the right fit, you are happy. You don't need as much money to live or to be happy. Thus, you can afford a pay cut when you are building a business or pouring money into your farm. I have never heard "contentment" explained better than in Dave Ramsey's book, "The Legacy Journey: A Radical View of Biblical Wealth and Generosity." This is a book about the Biblical principles of wealth management. I highly recommend that you check this out when considering the direction your life is going in right now. HINT: you do not have to be religious to understand the principles, they cross all lines, but this is based on the Bible. MAKE IT HAPPEN: I sincerely hope that you will make this happen for yourself as soon as possible. It has been one of the most powerful transitions in my life, second only to becoming a father and possibly becoming a husband. I want you to do it sooner rather than later and be re-born just as I have been. Please let me know how I can help. Contact me anytime! Marc Hershon from Huff Post writes, “With all of the rampant fun that this episode brings, my favorite touchstone throughout is the syncopated rhythm of Gottfried's relentless cackle and Black's throaty chortle. Those sounds alone are enough to pull laughs out of your piehole.”I saw that Gilbert has episodes with Bob Costas and Neil Degrasse Tyson. This weekend, while enjoying our two-hour time slot at our condo pool, I listened to a podcast hosted by Stephen J. Dubner. In case you don’t remember Stephen, he’s the co-author of one of my favorite books, Freakonomics. Dubner and his co-author Steven Levitt managed to make economics cool. They did so by making interesting connections we may not have considered societal trends.
L’incentivo economico: i bonus stratosferici. Freakonomics author and podcaster, Stephen Dubner, joins this episode to discuss how the rules of business have changed, what we can learn from COVID-19, how to make meetings better and why data fluency is so important. Dubner begins the discussion by explaining how the “old rules of business” no longer apply, especially amid COVID-19 (2:23) and then dives into some of the lessons we've learned during this time that we can use to make better decisions in the future (6:29). With a 13% increase in meetings as more people are working from home, Dubner provides tactical advice on how to make our meetings more productive (11:16). He concludes by explaining the importance of data fluency and how we can all become more data fluent (20:13). Tune in for all of this and more! In this episode, we explore Freakonomics, a unique take on the economic landscape co-written by economist Steven D. Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner. Freakonomics is not your typical econ book. In fact, it is quite the contrary as it appeals to readers of all knowledge levels and interests. The book's purpose is to simply examine the hidden side of life. Topics include the truth about real-estate agents, the myths of campaign finance, and so much more. If we were to classify Freakonomics, it would be in the mysterious alternative economic genre. Join us as we uncover the secrets of an undiscovered economic scene! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Welcome to the second podcast episode of this side series, the Podcast Spotlight. In this episode, we talk with graphic designer and longtime army friend of mine, Assyaraf Johari, as he introduces the following 2 podcasts: Podcast 1: Freakonomics [In praise of maintenance] The Freakonomics podcast is a show which discusses socioeconomic issues for a general audience. The show is spun-off from the wildly popular book of the same name released in 2005. Journalist Stephen Dubner, one of the co-authors of that book, hosts the show, while the other co-author, economist Steven Levitt, is a a regular guest. The show is mostly narrative-driven, with host Dubner introducing a question before exploring different ways to answer that question. It is not so much about graphs and theorems, but rather about how investigating how economics play out in real life. Listen to this if you love high production infotainment podcasts. This is one of the best around. Podcast 2: Tides of History [5 | The Military Revolution, 1350 - 1650] Tides of History is a narrative-driven history podcast presented by academic and former journalist, PhD Patrick Wyman. The show is in partnership with Wondery, a podcast stable from the United States. Notably, the podcast looks at two periods in depth, the end of the Roman Empire between 300 and 600 and the rise of the modern world between 1350 and 1650. It explores various facets of life such as society, the state, trade, and how they came to be. Listen to this if you are a history buff or if you are generally curious about the foundations of society. Alison Hockenberry, chief of staff of Dubner Productions and executive producer of "Freakonomics Radio" and "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," joins Chris Bannon on The Wolf Den. The two discuss how Alison's background as a TV news producer eventually led her to running the "Dubner empire" by embracing the power of saying yes to things. Alison also explains the genesis of “Tell Me Something I Don't Know” and details the early trial and error period that led to the show it is today.
WHAT I CAN LEARN IN ONE MINUTE THAT WILL CHANGE MY LIFE FOREVER Stephen Dubner (Freakonomics) has a new podcast and it just hit #1 in the iTunes charts. "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" is the name of it and it's about to change my life. He came over to play backgammon and I asked him about it. He told me he became a journalist because it was an easy way to start talking to people. He said, "If I ask people to tell me something I don't know," then I often learn new things and it keeps the conversation going. My mind blew open. I'm tired of freezing up. Feeling too paralyzed to talk. I'm a shy introvert. This will help unfreeze me. For everyone I meet, I will try to learn something I don't know. I'll simply ask them. This will be my new habit. --- I listened to Dubner's first podcast of the new show. I learned something new from one member of the audience. First off, it's a hard podcast to create. Listen to it. There are three panelists. There's a fact-checker. And there's 100 people in the audience. I've never heard of a podcast like that. It's crazy to put that much work into a podcast! To be creative, go beyond what everyone else says is crazy. And to be crazy, go beyond what everyone else says is creative. Creativity is a lose-lose proposition. You're crazy and you're lost in the woods. But if you aren't creative, you're stuck in traffic with everyone else. Someone on the show said something I didn't know: when you sleep, the nerve cells in your brain constrict, allowing spinal fluids to wash right through and clean up the proteins that often attach to nerve cells in the brain to cause Alzheimers. I learned about five new things on that very first episode. I went to sleep that night in anticipation. Spinal fluids washing through my brain, giving my cells a much needed bath. --- If I can ask everyone, "Tell me something I don't know," I'm going to learn from everyone. It adds up. It compounds. It will give me more knowledge and help me be less shy. I hope. "Tell me something I don't know". ------------What do YOU think of the show?
