Tony Curtis plays against type as the amoral press agent, but it's the terrifying menace of J.J. Hunsecker, played by Burt Lancaster, that makes it the opening film in our series. The Legend of Crombie‘s Gold examines a series of thematically-linked films - this time, we're taking a look at the films of Burt Lancaster, as we go From Here To Lancaster!

Returning to the podcast this week, we have the impressive critic, in-demand lecturer, & insightful author Mr. Adam Nayman, who longtime listeners will remember hearing last summer around this time as he joined me to discuss the life & career of actress Gene Tierney. A contributor to The Ringer, Criterion, CinemaScope, The New Yorker, & more, additionally, our Toronto-based guest has written thoughtful books on SHOWGIRLS, Ben Wheatley, the Coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, & David Fincher. Analyzing the life, films, & performances of one of classic cinema's greatest actors & activists, in this roughly 65-minute research-filled conversation, Adam & I share observations about both the most landmark films & overlooked turns in the career of Burt Lancaster, & pay close attention to SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, THE SWIMMER, ATLANTIC CITY, & other favorites as well. This week, Cev from Film Guff, House of Hammer, and Here Lies Amicus, joins us to chat about one of his favourite movies of all time.   Sweet Smell Of Success (1957) In the swift, cynical Sweet Smell of Success, directed by Alexander Mackendrick, Burt Lancaster stars as the vicious Broadway gossip columnist J. J. Hunsecker, and Tony Curtis as Sidney Falco, the unprincipled press agent Hunsecker ropes into smearing the up-and-coming jazz musician romancing his beloved sister. Featuring deliciously unsavory dialogue, in an acid, brilliantly structured script by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman, and noirish neon cityscapes from Oscar-winning cinematographer James Wong Howe, Sweet Smell of Success is a cracklingly cruel dispatch from the kill-or-be-killed wilds of 1950s Manhattan.   " The cat's in the bag and the bag's in the river."   This and previous episodes can be found everywhere you download your podcasts Follow us on Twitter @StinkingPause email: thestinkingpause@gmail.com   Thanks for listening!

A Hollywood screenwriting and movie-making icon, Ernest Lehman penned some of the most memorable scenes to ever grace the silver screen. Hailed by Vanity Fair as “perhaps the greatest screenwriter in history,” Lehman's work on films such as North by Northwest, The King and I, Sabrina, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music helped define a generation of movie making. But while his talent took center stage, the public knew little of Lehman himself, a native of Manhattan's Upper West Side and the Five Towns of Long Island devoted to his wife of 50 years. His relentless perfectionism, hypochondria and all-night writing sessions fueled by tequila and grilled cheese sandwiches were some of the quirks that made Lehman a legend in the Hollywood community. In Ernest Lehman: The Sweet Smell of Success (UP of Kentucky, 2022), author Jon Krampner lays bare the life of this lauded yet elusive character. In his book on film noir, Arts of Darkness, Catholic philosopher Thomas Hibbs writes: "Subverting the rationality of the pursuit of happiness, noir turns the American dream into a nightmare. Noir also undercuts the Enlightenment vision of the city as the locus of human bliss, wherein human autonomy and rational economics could combine to bring about the satisfaction of human desire." Sweet Smell of Success is a sterling example of this theme in noir. "Success" is one of the great American idols, and the two acid-tongued protagonists of this film entertainingly embody the dark side of success in the seeking and the finding, as desperate publicity man Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) eats dirt instead of gravy from the train of ruthless gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster). It's almost like Wormtongue and Saruman in Times Square, if Saruman's main goal were to stop his kid sister from marrying a jazz guitarist. But we don't want to spoil it for you... Music is The Duskwhales, “Take It Back”, used with permission. https://theduskwhales.bandcamp.com This podcast is a production of CatholicCulture.org. Celeste pulled a card from The Oracle of Mystical Moments: It's #22, Like a Bird. "Surround yourself with activities or people who make you feel inspired."   02:15 – The 3 big things this week: First, the Moon is out of bounds most of the week. Out-of-bounds is when a celestial body goes beyond the maximum declination of 23°27', either north or south. The planet is outside the boundary or limits of the ecliptic plane, beyond the plane of the Sun's apparent orbit around the Earth. Out-of-bounds planets take on a Uranian flavor. And the Moon represents the mood of the people, so you may find that folks are acting out of emotion more easily. On the positive side, we can use this energy to move past limitations!   03:40 – Second, this week, there are some fruitful sextiles! Mars and Saturn sextile on Monday, and Jupiter and Venus on Tuesday. Sextiles offer an opportunity; they are 60-degree aspects and can bring ease and flow and opportunities for growth through people or situations. Astrologer Frank Clifford recently said, "The definition of success is talent + energy + courage."   04:57 – Third, this week, we have a New Moon at 7 Cancer on Tuesday! Cancer is a cardinal sign, which means the energy is initiating. It's also a water sign: How can you trust your gut this week? (Don't forget to download Celeste's complimentary  Setting Intentions Guide!) This New Moon will square Jupiter: How can you be joyful and feel abundant, even through these difficult times?   06:08 – On Sunday, the word of the day is POSITIVITY! The Balsamic Moon in Gemini invites us to be flirty and have fun. Avoid mind games.   07:23 – On Monday, the theme is PURSUIT. Mars in Aries sextiles Saturn in Aquarius. Hard work and persistence pay off.   09:09 – Tuesday's focus is SERENDIPITY!   Moon enters Cancer at 4:53 am PT. New Moon at 7 Cancer at 7:52 pm PT. Set intentions for what you want to grow and nurture.   11:22 – On Wednesday, the main idea is to SHINE. Shine bright like a diamond. #Rihanna   12:07 – On Thursday, the word is DETERMINATION. Moon enters Leo at 5:39 pm PT. Use the fire wisely – be inspired, not reckless.   13:36 – On Friday, the word of the day is SELF-PROTECTION. Mars in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn. Be aware of your surroundings.   15:12 – On Saturday, the focus is COMMUNICATION. Mercury in Gemini square Neptune in Pisces. Pause to assemble your thoughts before speaking to avoid miscommunication.   17:00 – Thanks for listening to Celestial Insights!
