On November 5, 1936 — The Dodgers name Burleigh Grimes as their new manager. The former Brooklyn spitballer will be replacing Casey Stengel, who was fired last month during the World Series after compiling a 208-251 (.453) record during his four-year tenure. The Dodgers for a short period will be paying 3 managers, Max Carey, Grimes and Stengel. Grimes will last two seasons and win only 131 games and lose 171.On November 5, 1997 – In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named American League Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Baltimore Orioles' 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led the Orioles to the league's best record in 1997 (98-64), a dispute over $10,500 in fines to second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson's reign in Baltimore. Johnson directed the fines to be paid to a charity. Orioles owner Peter Angelos is upset with the way the matter is handled and Johnson resigns. On November 5, 2010 — One of the approximately 60 rare T206 Honus Wagner baseball cards, auctioned off by the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame, is acquired by a sporting card store owner Doug Walton, who pays $262,000 for the treasured piece of memorabilia. The School Sisters of Notre Dame plan to use the windfall from the sale of the valuable card of the Pirates' third baseman to benefit ministries for the poor in 35 countries.Born November 5, Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays as the second player overall in the 1978 free agent draft, Lloyd Moseby was rushed to the majors by the talent-hungry Blue Jays faster than the development of his potential would have ordinarily warranted. A talented center fielder, he combined with Jesse Barfield and George Bell to form what was sometimes called the best outfield in baseball in the late 1980s.In 1983 Moseby became the first Blue Jay to score 100 runs in a season, and tied teammate Damaso Garcia for a team-record (and league-leading) 21-game hitting streak. The following season, he tied with teammate Dave Collins for the AL lead in triples, and was a consistent run-producer and stolen base threat for the mid-80s Jays. By the end of the decade, the “best outfield” was being dismantled. Barfield was traded to the Yankees, and emerging prospect Junior Felix was gradually pushing Moseby out of center. When Moseby signed with the Detroit Tigers in December 1989, he left Toronto as the Blue Jays' career leader in games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, extra-base hits, stolen bases, strikeouts, being hit by the pitch, and sacrifice flies.

There are few stones left unturned in this episode. The Revd Dr Dan Inman, Precentor of Chichester cathedral, leads us on a pilgrimage through liturgy, buildings, arts and pilgrimage itself. TW: Gillian and Dan also get into a delicate conversation about the handling of a specific historic alleged abuse case regarding Bishop George Bell. Dan shares what a Precentor does. Cathedrals as more than a quirky english moving museum. How cathedrals and the liturgy provide a healing space for many. How the George Bell abuse case was handled impacted the naming of places and spaces. The possibility of liturgy helping to heal the wounds of historic abuse. Pilgrimage, the why, what and where of pilgrimage for Dan. Where Dan finds hope for human flourishing, as a Precentor. The Cubs might not be willing to acknowledge it today, but it was 32 years ago this week that they acquired one of the greatest players in franchise history, trading away aging slugger George Bell for a dynamic, young Sammy Sosa. Sosa would go on to challenge for the single season home run record, club more than 600 career bombs, and win an MVP. Mike and Bill look back at Sosa's incredible rise, somewhat inexplicable fall, and try to figure out why the Cubs still pretend that he never existed. Plus, happy birthday to Kip Selbach and Travis Fryman! And farewell to Tom Qualters and Jim Hannan

In this weeks episode we're joined by incredible thought leader from Sanctus - George Bell. George talks us through how to keep a positive mindset when working in the hustle and bustle of business life and how to keep an eye on your mental health. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
George Bell has been at the helm of Techno-Vision Systems for at least 35 years. In that time, he has brought many blindness products to the UK market, repaired numerous machines which would have otherwise been condemned, and provided countless hours of technical support. He is particularly well-known for his involvement with the Duxbury Braille Translator, not only as UK sales and support but also through his tireless oversight of the documentation. He also enjoyed a very fruitful relationship with Dancing Dots, and imported many of their products including the Goodfeel braille music translator. As we approach the end of George's long and established career, we thought it would be fitting to spend some time in conversation with him, picking out the highlights of the past three and a half decades and thinking about what the future might look like.

After graduating college in May 2020, at the peak of COVID, he moved to Austin, Texas without ever visiting or knowing anyone there. Over the last 2 years, he went from $2000 to his name & no job to founding a gamified cardio fitness startup that's venture-backed & funded by Pokemon Go, becoming a 6-figure brand personality contracted by the NBA, Old Spice, McDonalds, Mobile1, and several other, and owner of a duplex near downtown Austin valued at over $500K with 3 tenants. This episode, we follow up on a question from Ep. 90 about why the wandering worker Thomas Fuller might have fallen in with a criminal shepherd by looking at a pair of vagrancy and labor laws from the economically disrupted decades following the Black Death: the Statute of Laborers of 1351 and the Commons' Petition against Vagrants of 1376. We also learn a bit about late medieval prisons. Today's Texts: Henderson, Ernest F., editor and translator. Select Historical Documents of the Middle Ages. George Bell and Sons, 1892, pp. 165-168. This episode is chock full of great sports talk. Toronto Mike and I get into the BlueJays 8 game winning streak and I go off against the Official Scorer from Thursday's game, who gave an infield hit rather than an error on a play that cost Alek Manoah 3 earned runs. We also get into the Edmonton-Colorado game, the National Anthem screw up, why women's tennis is less appealing than men's, the NBA final that had a shocking result, and much more. At 30:00 we are joined by Joe Tilley, who, for over 30 years, delivered the late night sports on CTV Toronto (CFTO TV). We get into Joe's career and he tells the story of how we almost came to blows back in 1988 during spring training. George Bell was the cause of all this furor, and CHCH TV's Fred Anderton didn't help matters, either. Joe is a great storyteller, and is especially passionate about boxing. Hope you enjoy the show.
From my earliest days covering sports to the season that just wasn't to be, I've followed the Toronto BlueJays as closely as anyone since 1977. In this compilation, I talk about working with the Jays radio voice Tom Cheek and growing up with those early Jays teams. As well, interviews with George Bell, about the Bruce Kison karate-kick episode, and Willie Upshaw on that 1985 team that won the A.L. East. And then there were the ups and downs of 2021, and the persistent injury problems that plagued George Springer and drove me crazy, and finally the bitter disappointment of finishing in 4th place in the division, when a few weeks earlier it looked like the Jays would win a wild card spot. I hope you enjoy this compilation. A must if you followed the Jays in the 1980s, especially.
I have a conversation with George Bell. George enlisted in the US military in 1998 and began his career with the US Army SOCOM Psychological Operations (PSYOP). This role would take him all over the world from jumping into Afghan in October 2001 to South East Asia, to Libya after the 2012 Benghazi attack, to Ukraine in 2014 and plenty more in between. After his time in the military George retired and linked up with Mike Glover over at Mike's company Fieldcraft Survival where he served as the companies Vice President. George has recently left Fieldcraft and is currently enjoying hard earned time off with his family back home in NC. He has also just been accepted to partake in the Honor Foundation, an organisation that helps SOF veterans with their career transitions after military service. George, thank you for your service, your time and friendship mate. Much love brother! Follow George on IG: george.bell.jr Check out the Honor Foundation: https://www.honor.org/
George Bell talks with Bronson Kaufusi who has played football at Brigham Young University and then in the NFL since 2016. He was just signed to the Green Bay Packers practice team for the 2021 season after changing positions from the defensive side of the ball to tight end. Meet George, a college graduate and Venture For America fellow, who lost all his money, got rejected from over 100 jobs, and packed his bags and headed to Austin. Learning from his mom's hustling attitude and coveting the Mamba Mentality, George never let adversity slow him down and is now an EA Sports Brand Personality sponsored by the NBA, and founder of a cardio fitness app, Run IO. Listen to George talk about how he took his love for the video game NBA 2K and created a 501 Hustle around it, by realizing that when you follow what you love instead of getting stuck in "what you should be doing," things fall into place and the right connections will come into your life. During quarantine, George learned the valuable lesson of how to alter his mindset and see opportunities in times of struggle. Listen to George share how he turned the worst moments in his life into opportunities that allowed him to gain strength, seize power, and grow into the individual he aspired to be. His app, Run.IO, has won several pitch competitions, has official advisory from the founder of Map My Run, currently has two engineers on the project, and is looking to grow his team!
