In this episode I'm joined by Simon Elliott (@simon_D_Elliott) from Schrödinger to talk about what computer simulations can teach us about the chemistry of ALD at the atomic level. The discussion starts with some introduction and example of how the ALD deposition works at the smallest scale, too small for the normal analytical technique to analyse.  Some discussion about simulations are performed and the computer hardware necessary. As usual we did not manage to get too deep into some particular topic because we need to keep the podcast in a good listening time but we will probably come back on the topic in the future. Next week we will take a break from ALD and change the topic but we will be back with a guest from the industry to see the other side of the technology. In this episode we kick off the ALD series with our first guest, Christophe, coming to speak about in-situ analysis of ALD deposition processes. The different methods (QCM, ellipsometry, Mass spectrometry, IR spectrometry and XPS) are used to probe the film growth and the chemistry of the process happening on the surface and around the deposition chamber. The techniques are presented with some exaples of application at the Coocon lab with a more in depth discussion of the latest research topic of ALD and thin film Li-ion batteries. Again sorry for the non ideal audio quality, this always happens when we need to use Skype. Here some contacts if you want to know more about @CoCooN, Prof. Detavernier and their work of the group at University of Ghent (@ugent). In this episode we have our friend Miia from Fazer speaking with us about how food (cookies in particular) is made in an industrial scale. How are new products developed and then what is research in the food industry.  Not surprising that a lot of the food is produced in a factory similar to at home but on a bigger scale. Most of the problems are coming from making a lot of the same food in an optimized and cleaver way. Enjoy the discussion and ask questions if you have some, Miia will surely be back at some point! The different experts will delve deeper in several sides of the technology to cover it as much as possible. In this quite special episode compare to the usual, we (that is only me actually) invite Miika (@ryemiika) to speak about GIN. The discussion goes from the story of the distillery to how to actually make an award winning GIN while waiting for the distillery's own Whiskey to hang out long enough in the barrels. If you are interested in GIN or in the distillery business in general this will be a nice episode for you, it surely was for me. You always learn a lot when you speak to the experts! Then there is some discussion about the new tech that is the more interesting part with Juhana then going to explain what is and how CUDA is used for scientific research. HE is simulating bubble and foam. In this second episode we are again discussing with Pietro, a researcher at consorzio RFX in Padova (Italy) about Nuclear Fusion. This week's episode is more focused on the physics of nuclear fusion with focus on Pietro's research on the atomic beam insertion into the plasma and tech in general to sustain the plasma in the reactor. It is really interesting for us to discuss the topic with an expert because the technology is well known by most of the people as being the future energy revolution but the details are much less known. We learn a lot and hopefully you will too. I'm sorry about the audio quality but we needed to use Skype and a laptop microphone to record these 2 episodes plus I'm not too good yet at editing audio. We go through the path that an application might follow during development and compare it with what would change when developing a more complex videogame. Also there is some traditional discussion about Open source and Git Hub. Stick to the end for some nice bug stories encountered during development. There are developers that care about those bugs even if they are only affecting few users among the whole user base.   Follow and speak with us on Twitter @STG_podcast Find us also on PocketCasts and iTunes!
