A bit of fun interspersed with Eds wonderful knowledge.Cheers and remember all Ye Who Listen Are Legends.
In this episode we discuss the rigours of parenting young children and the physical toll it can take on your body with regards to movements.Ed reveals to us the beautiful fact that we are designed to do this and provided we take 10-15 minutes a day (even in little 2-3 minute bursts) to address our weak links then we can help mitigate the chances of a back, knee or hip injury. This allows you to be more present and enjoy your parenting far more so than I got to with my back injury! This episode is dedicated to all of those out there who have young children and are trying their best to be present and engaged parents. In this episode Ed and I begin by talking about how we are going to establish realistic and sustainable fat loss goals. We close by saying that we need to change our lifestyles to make Fat loss/maintainence a function of our lifestyle rather than the process goal!I announce my own personal fat loss "challenge" and we talk about the time it will take to achieve sustainable fat loss.We also discuss a whole host of ways in which you can make incremental changes to your lifestyle (we don't recommend massive over night changes) that can impact your fat retention/loss including sleep and exercise habits. We hope you enjoy this episode and as always it is dedicated to your health. Thanks so much for taking the time to listen, we really appreciate it. In this episode we answer Legendary Listener Scottish John's question about his persistent chronic back pain and the Aliens that may be causing it. This is a powerful episode filled with a combination of my 10 years of suffering through and finally fixing my chronic back pain and Mr Ed Stiles almost 30 years of experience fixing people like John and I.We talk about how pelvic up slips and misalignments can be the root cause of an injury, how you need to RELAX (easier said than done) when you are hurt, and most importantly how under lying mechanical misalignements (pelvic up slips/roatations) can be the hidden cause of all the unexplained pain/symptoms. We also discuss what kind of castle John lives in and tell him where to put his kettle in the morning! As always, we really really appreciate you listening to us waffle on and if you have a question of your own please don't be afraid to write in and ask away. If you like what you are hearing then please help the show grow by sharing it with friends and family.Cheers

Introducing our latest guest Kevin and his two biceps thunder and lighting!Having gone to the doctor in his late 40's and being told that his cholesterol was high and that he needed to start medication Kevin decided to make some dietary and lifestyle changes to see if he could address his health issues himself. Not only was he successful in dramatically reducing his cholesterol but he also lost 50 pounds of unhealthy weight in 100 days and has kept it off!!! That is the key here, he has made it sustainable, healthy fat loss without going on some crazy restrictive diet or eating nothing but grapefruits for 9 months. In this episode, he shares a whole host of information from the practical processes he used to get the weight off to the psychological benefits and thought processes behind his successful journey. All without trying to sell us anything or insisting that this way or that way, this diet or that diet, are the only ways to achieve your fat loss goals! His advice is practical and translatable to all walks of life and can even be reverse engineered for weight gain!Ed chips in, as always, with some insightful and informative gems and I talk too much about walking. Kevin can be found at fit.factor.40.with.kevin on Instagram where you can get in touch with him for support and guidance, although he specifically works with men in their 40's his sound, healthy principles for fat loss are applicable to all.
In this episode, Legendary Listener Mark writes in to tell us that unfortunately, he has suffered a hernia. He asks what types of exercises are safe to carry out while he awaits his operation.Ed fills us in on how to avoid getting a hernia in the first place and how to avoid aggravating it further if you do have one. The key is to control your intrabdominal pressure so that you don't overstress your abdominal wall and squeeze your intestines out! Pretty hardcore stuff! As always this is not patient-specific advice and is intended to give everyone a very generic overview. Always seek professional in-person help to assess your specific situation. Thanks as ever for taking the time to listen and please feel free to be in touch if you have a question of your own. stilesandgiles@gmail.com

You just have to do the work and it takes time and patience. As you will hear after the episode we are going to be taking a little break until we are all on the other side of 2020 and cannot wait to bring you some more randomly selected episode topics and special guests! Its gonna be a great season.Best, Stiles and Giles
In this episode we discuss neck injuries and how technology is having a greater and greater effect on our cervical vertebrae. We also do a fair bit of weed whacking and discover that once again, surprise surprise, Ed has suffered an injury to this part of the body.As always thanks for listening and we appreciate you taking the time. Write in to the show if you have any questions. More and more people are doing this and we love it so keep the questions coming.
In this episode we answer a question from my Dad regarding how to use music to aid your fitness programming and whether or not there is a quick 30 minute cure-all exercise program.... the answer.... it depends.
Well we are back at it again folks, after a hectic few weeks I've finally managed to edit and upload this episode where we continue our journey into the world of common injuries and how to fix them. This time focusing on the elbow and wrist. We talk about golfers elbow, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and more and as always Ed delights us with his insightful wealth of knowledge and I bumble my way through pretending I know what I am talking about. Please do interact with us by sharing with a friend, following us on instagram @stilesandgiles.podcast and sending us an email with any questions you may have, big or small. As ever thanks for taking the time to check this episode out and remember "All ye who listen are legends."

In this enlightening episode we find out all about the shoulder and the injuries that are likely to occur to it such as frozen shoulder, should impingement, tendonitis and more. I also have a light bulb moment as to why my best mate Whitey may have had an injured wrist for so long!Check it out and let us know what you think.
In this episode we talk about the role of the thorasic spine and how it acts as a major pivot point for our overall posture as well as playing a major role in the health of our shoulders. It also provides us with much of our psinal rotation and unless we conserve, enable and protect its ability to move correctly we will very quickly find ourselves in pain!As always Eds shares his wide knowledge and I throw in the odd question and comment here and there. Some of them are even relevant! Thanks as ever for listening, we trule appreciate it and please subscribe to the podcast, tag a friend on instagram who you think will benefit from us or even more importantly send us your questions! Later this week we will have some 'bonus' questions episodes dropping so keep an eye out for them.Cheers guys and remember all ye who listen are legends.
In this episode which is extremely relevant to me we discuss lower back injuries, how to prevent them and how to heal them. Disc bulges, herniated disc, nerve contact, piriformis syndrome and muscular imbalances are all on the menu.I talk about how I hurt my back repeatedly through hundreds of repetitive 'life' movements every day which added up to create a massive muscular/load imbalance on my body. Analyze your life movements and see if you can find the hidden contributors to your back pain.We also discuss the benefits of going to see physios, chiros and muscle mechanics and give you the number one clue on finding a good one... do they pay attention to your posture? As always, all ye who listen are legends and we thank you for it.
In this episode we discuss the hip joint and common injuries. Ed gives us some simple steps we can take to avoid (hopefully) having hip replacements and lets us know the importance of cross training rather than racking up huge mileage as a runner.
We all know someone with a knee injury or a "bad knee". What if these injuries were preventable? Well we think a large majority of them are!In this episode we talk about alignment and balance within and around the knee joint and how not having those two important factors leads to us being predisposed to injury. It doesn't take a genius to know that having a well aligned balanced knee joint is far preferable to having a misaligned imbalanced joint.Ed takes us through some of the common imbalances and misalignments and how to fix them.We also do our usual weed whacking as we wander off into the woods of 'back injury land' but overall this episode is definitely worth a listen. We think and hope it has the capability to enlighten and help a lot of people who may have an injury in their future if things don't change so please share it with anyone you feel may benefit. As ever, "All ye who listen are Legends"
Why do we dislike burpees and not rate a 6 pack?Well... the awesome athletic movement that is the burpee is actually far too advanced for most people. Ed explains how to get to being able to do them and gives you some alternatives too.We also discuss 'The Keg' body type and why you shouldn't be prioritizing and chasing a 6 pack. There is no perfect physique so don't go chasing down a 6 pack to the detriment of your well being. As always, please send us your questions to stilesandgiles@gmail.com and let us know what you think of the show. Share it with a friend by tagging them on Instagram or by telling them directly like we used to in the times of old! Anything you can do to help us build our following and spread the word will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for listening and remember 'All ye who listen are legends'.
Have you ever had a foot or ankle injury? In this episode we discuss how the foot and ankle complex is our foundation and root into the ground, the common ankle injuries such as plantar fasciitis. What the knock on effects are of leaving acute ankle or foot injuries are over time and how important the alignment of the foot is in setting up the potential to have the entire chain of the body in line.As always, please feel free to send us your questions and comments to stilesandgiles@gmail.com.Thanks as ever for listening and please enjoy!
In this episode one of our legendary listeners has been in touch and asked the question "does recreational exercise fill the bill if you don't like the gym?" the answer is absolutely yes! Listen on to find out why and how you can maximize your use of recreational activity to make 'sustainable' positive changes in your health and wellness. Big shout out to Mark and 'sustainable_fitness_nutrition' on instagram for the question and interaction with our show.If you are a legendary listener and have a question for us then please feel free to be in touch. We will do our utmost to answer it with the minimum possible amount of weed whacking (there will always be some) and as usual the cliche stands "There are no stupid questions''.Send them to stilesandgiles@gmail.com
We've all suffered injuries from time to time but what factors need to line up in order to have an injury occur? Are injuries an inevitable part of our existence and result of our athletic (or gardening) pursuits?Listen to this episode to find out the answer to all of those questions and best of all find out how to drastically reduce your likelihood of experiencing chronic injuries! *Clue: look after those acute injuries! This is easily one of my favorite episodes so far and I learnt so much. This series on injuries as we work our way up through the body is going to be both fascinating and enlightening for so many people and we are really looking forward to sharing the information with you all.
Our first "Question Time" episode. This episode answers a couple of important questions in the exercise game... how to avoid plateaus and where to draw motivation from to get up out the chair and get going.I thank my Dad and Brother-in-Law for the questions and sincerely thank the other listeners who have contributed questions since this was recorded. We shall answer your question in due course! The plan is to drop these episodes as and when we can so hopefully you will get your answers in a somewhat timely fashion (within a couple of weeks say).Again thank you so much for listening and as ever please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have as now you know we will at least try to answer them! Bet place to send your questions is stilesandgiles@gmail.com, instagram @stilesandgiles.podcast works too!
I had an epiphany the other day and realized that exercise is a skill!! Like anything it can and should be learned and developed, from learning different exercise techniques to understanding the benefits of seeing a personal trainer. In this episode we discuss the benefits of learning the skill yourself versus paying for a trainer who has already developed the full skill set and can pass the knowledge on.We also discuss the benefits of dropping your ego, using trainers and taking a humble approach to your gym visits knowing that the people giving you advice are most likely doing it from a place of sincerity and are trying to help you better yourself. We give you a (relatively) clear and concise overview of the basic "system" behind working out. Starting with the warm up and finishing with the cool down.
In this episode we talk about the muscular system. How and why do we need to train our muscles?Muscular training improves strength and therefore our ability to perform day to day activities. Having dense muscular tissue (not necessarily large muscle mass!!) makes you a "better butter burner" as your body requires more energy to fuel itself and maintain its current state.Strength training improves bone density and decreases the likely hood of osteoporosis.Muscular training also improves sleep. We discuss the appropriate rep ranges to work in and also talk about when weights would be preferable to body weight exercises. As always thanks so much for listening and we appreciate your time.
I want to train my carido system but I don't want to go for a long run/swim/bike. Is that possible? Well the good news is YES!In this Episode we discuss what the Cardio Vascular system is and how to train it, the benefits of training it and how to incorporate cardio training into your day to day life and hobbies. If you want to work your cardio system while gardening then garden faster! Anything that raises the heart rate above its baseline level can be considered some form of cardio training so it is possible to find ways to train this system all over the place in day to day life.As always thank you for listening and we would really appreciate your feed back. Send us questions to stilesandgiles@gmail.com, reach out to us on instagram @stilesandgiles.podcast and or leave us a 5 star review wherever you listen to your podcasts (Spotify doesn't currently allow reviews so don't waste your time there.)
This is one of my favorite episodes so far. Ed enlightens us on the importance of recovery and gives us clear steps as to how to go about recovering properly when we exercise. Starting with planning for recovery we also touch upon nutrition post work out, cool downs and the importance and role of rest days in making you better. As Ed says at the end of the episode..."If you want to be better, focus on your recovery and you'll be better."As always we really appreciate everyone who has been listening and engaging with us and can't wait to continue to deliver the kind of content that by now you know to expect from us.We hope this episode finds you healthy and well and remember "All Ye Who Listen Are Legends"
Should you bother to switch up your exercises or can you just find some you like and stick with those? Well in this episode Ed informs me that it is indeed a good idea to vary your exercises in order to maximize your bodies potential and have the best chance of transferring those gym skills into real life situations. We also learn that even if you have built yourself a balanced program you still need to switch up the inputs and angles to the muscles so that they don't become functional in one primary movement or too adapted to do a specific task. Think bicep curls and chin ups. Both require the use of the biceps but if all you did was work on curls all day then one day you'll be down at the park and you're five year old son will be able to do more chin ups than you! (not that I'm speaking from experience of course!)We also touch on the wonderful work out tool that is the TRX suspension training system and sing its praises as both Stiles and Giles own and frequently use TRX suspension training equipment. As always thanks so much for listening and if you like our show then share it with a friend, leave us a 5 star review on apple podcasts and keep listening. We really appreciate it.
In this episode Ed educates me and our wonderful listeners on the purpose and benefits of cooling down properly after exercise. How we can utitlise gentle movement, deep breathing and static stretching to maximise the benefits gained from our work out and do the best we can to bring the body back into balance, minimizing next day soreness. We also take an in depth look at stretching, how it is misunderstood and often confusion what with all the different information sources out there. Ed takes us through a very simple and effective (I can attest to this) method of ensuring that you don't over stretch but you do get those incremental gains that allow you to bring your body back into balance. As ever thanks so much for listening and please subscribe share with a friend, send us your questions to stilesandgiles@gmail.com and follow uson instagram @stilesandgiles.podcast to ensure you are kept up to date with new episodes.
In this episode we address our first question. My Dad, a cancer warrior, is asking how often he should work out when it comes to helping out with cancer. We discuss the recommendations and types of exercise which can contribute to your daily/weekly tallies and discuss that yes gardening is indeed a form of exercise.Once again all of this is done under the umbrella of "appropriate" levels of exercise and Ed guides us artfully through the various questions and comments I throw at him along the way! Thanks for listening as ever and please recommend us to a friend and leave us a 5 star rating on apple podcasts, at the time of writing we are currently the 160th ranked health and wellness podcast on Apple Podcasts and are of course looking to break into the top 100!
Whats the point of doing a warm up? Well... in this episode Ed enlightens us as to what the purpose of warm up is and how it limits the chance of injury by:-Literally warming up the muscles making them more pliable and less likely to get strained.Lubricating the jointsIncreasing blood flow and nutrientsDecreasing toxinsPracticing key movement sequences to ensure the right muscles are turned on and firing.I'm sure after listening to this one you'll never skip a warm up again and you won't want to!
In this episode Ed and I discuss how long will it take for you to see the physical results of your efforts when it comes to getting fitter and healthier?I explain some of my disappointment at not yet looking like Thor after 9 months of dedicated fitness training. We learn that the body is astonishingly fast at making adaptations to demands placed on it and that these can and do occur in as little as 24 hours. We have our usual trundles off into the weeds as by now I am sure you have come to expect but as ever it is fun and informative so please enjoy and thank you very much for listening.
In this fantastic episode of the Stiles and Giles show Ed enlightens us all on the various body types and how your genetics may affect the way you should approach your training and the results you see. We also discuss how your size may not be the most accurate indicator of how healthy you are and throwing out the scales as they only measure weight not health! Which I am sure will be a popular choice for many people, myself included. As ever thank you so much for listening and please share this with a friend to help spread the word.
In this episode Ed educates me on the importance of getting the right intensity when working out, maintaining good posture and form and how to work within a rep range rather than going for a specfic number.Among other things discussed are movements that transfer well into life, stretching, cardio mobility and strength and the role that time under tension plays in obtaining your desired results. As ever enjoy and please tell a friend to spread the word.We also introduce Miles our secret weapon.
In this final installment of our first episode on posture we discuss some self assessment methods for posture as well as running through some great exercises for helping your to improve your ability to hold good static and dynamic posture. We also summarize that yes posture is indeed the one thing that can save us all and is extremely underrated and often not fully understood so we hope this episode has helped to bring posture to the forefront of your mind and it is up to you to hold it there! Thanks as always for listening and please enjoy,
In this second part of the epic episode on posture Stiles and Giles discuss moving from static to dynamic posture; repetitive motions that may be hiding throughout your day and secretly destroying your posture; resetting your posture throughout the day rather than waiting for the end of it. As always, thanks for listening, please enjoy and if you like what you hear leave us a 5 star rating or even better tell a friend (or 10) to listen too.
This episode is very important to me as I truly believe that it was/is attention to and awareness of my posture that finally opened the door to beginning to seriously rehab my back. In this episode we talk about dynamic and static posture and Stiles walks us through a fantastic little movement combination which is designed to feed and flush our joints all while working on posture.
In the second part of Episode 3 we discuss the fascinating concept of super compensation and how the body adapts to exercise input. The rest of the episode is spent with me trying to trap Stiles into committing to announcing a superior form of exercise. He does an excellent job of bobbing and weaving and dodging my persistent questioning and manages to somehow enlighten us all once again in the process. We also have a good laugh at the end so make sure you stick around until then!
In this episode we discuss how getting fit doesn't HAVE to be an arduous journey. That exercise should be invigorating and not exhausting and that many people view exercise as a form of punishment! Which it isn't by the way. We also talk about how to avoid being so sore you can't chew bubble gum!We have listened to your feed back and are now breaking down our episodes into bite sized chunks so that you can easily listen on your commute to work, when you're out walking the dog or when you get a spare few minutes in your day.We will still be discussing our questions and answers in full, just breaking the episodes down into as many chunks as necessary to cover the topics.
In this episode we take a dive into the very important and cross-cultural role that exercise plays in getting you through tough situations from tsunamis to pandemics. We discuss the mental and physical benefits to staying active during these turbulent and uncertain times. We also talk through how this enforced quiet time can be used to reflect on where your body really is currently and what is capable of right now without feeling the need to compare yourself to all the other 'healthy (you never know what problems they are facing) gym goers. This can serve as a benefit and silver lining as you may be able to build from where you are to where you want to be. Less of a two steps forward one step back scenario which you may have been dealing with before as you attempted to 'thrash' your body into shape.Again, listen, send us your questions on instagram @fixingmyback like, subscribe and give us a 5 star rating we would greatly appreciate it.
Have you ever wondered what is the point in you bothering to exercise? In this our first episode your hosts, Ed Stiles, an intelligent, charming man who has been a certified exercise physiologist for the last 28 years and Giles Talbott, a British bloke with a bad back but a beautiful accent address the reason behind why you should get up and move your body around. How to get from where you are to where you want to be without attempting to smash yourself into shape and regretting it the next day... listen on to find out why.Hit us up in the comments with any questions we can answer for you and leave us a 5 star rating.
