On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a timely conversation recorded just hours after the presidential election was called, and yes, it was on their minds. It's frequent Talkhouse alum Julien Baker and her old friend Nick Carpenter, aka. Medium Build. Baker is a powerhouse singer and songwriter who's best known these days as one third of the supergroup Boygenius—you'll hear her refer in this chat to Lucy and Phoebe, her bandmates Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. But we've been fans here since way before that; her amazing debut Sprained Ankle will be 10 years old next year, and she's built herself an incredible catalog—and fanbase—since. Baker's last solo album was 2021's Little Oblivions, and I imagine there's some new music coming in the not-terribly-distant future. She has loaned her powerful voice to other artists since, though, including her old friend Nick Carpenter's project Medium Build—his new EP Marietta, out tomorrow, features a duet with Baker called “Yoke,” check out that song right here. Carpenter, who's based in Alaska, has made five full-lengths as Medium Build, and his deeply personal songs strike a chord in the same way that Baker's do: They have similar backgrounds, having grown up queer in religious households in the South. As you'll hear in this chat, Carpenter explores his background in his music, and his honesty tends to melt audiences that let him in. I'll be truthful: I thought these two were going to bail on chatting the morning after the election, and I wouldn't have blamed them one bit. It doesn't seem like the cheeriest time in America to be a proud member of a marginalized population. But I was so cheered up by listening to them talk: They're not psyched, naturally, but they remain undeterred and committed to spreading honesty and love. Sure, there's some earned cynicism about commercialism and the less pleasant parts of their jobs, but mostly it's the joy of homies, sincerity, and consensual hugs with your local barista. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Julien Baker and Nick Carpenter for chatting. Nathan is on vacation this week, so no new Commonplace. Instead, we're pulling from the college radio archives to present an interview with Julien Baker conducted just two months after the release of her debut album Sprained Ankle. Originally aired January 2016.
In the late 90s and early 2000s, the LA Lakers looked like the heir apparent to Michael Jordan's throne, with Shaq dominating in the post and Kobe Bryant coming into his own as the league's emerging superstar. And when Jordan's coach Phil Jackson took over, the final piece of the championship puzzle seemed to be in place. But in game 2 of the 2000 Finals, the Laker's title run was jeopardized when Kobe went down with a severe ankle sprain. Somehow, Lakers head athletic trainer Gary Vitti and his team got Bryant back on the floor for a pivotal game 4. In this episode, Gary shares: How winning through pain helped Kobe replace “can't” and “won't” in his vocabulary with the “can” and “will” of the Mamba mentalityWhy heading to Indianapolis helped Kobe return to play sooner than if the series had stayed in LAWhen an argument over a thumb injury led to Gary bumping Kobe's headHow he used the example of Isaiah Thomas's injury in the 1988 NBA Finals to inspire Kobe What Kobe did in game 4 after Shaq fouled out to set the Lakers up to win their first title since Magic retiredTo hear more of Gary's stories about Kobe, Shaq, Magic, Kareem, and Pat Riley, listen to our previous Basketball Strong episode with him, and read his book 32 Years of Titles and Tears from the Best Seat in the House.

Mr. Sprained Ankle's seventh studio LP lands at midnight Drake has announced his follow-up to last year's Certified Lover Boy. It's called Honestly, Nevermind, and it arrives tonight at midnight. The rapper announced the news in an Instagram post today (June 16). Find that below. Drake released his sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy in September of 2021. The LP shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, overtaking Kanye West's Donda with what was at the time the biggest debut week of 2021. The LP includes the Right Said Fred-sampling, Young Thug and Future-featuring “I'm Too Sexy” and the 21 Savage and Project Pat-featuring “Knife Talk.” It also includes an R Kelly co-writing credit. Just days before the album's release, he shared an unreleased Kanye West and André 3000 track—featuring a Drake diss—on SiriusXM's Sound 42. West—now legally known as “Ye”—would later invite Drake to appear as his guest at a previously unannounced December 7 event intended to aid in the release of Gangster Disciples co-founder Larry Hoover. CLB is the full-length follow-up to 2018's Scorpion. In between those two LPs, Drake dropped Dark Lane Demo tapes, which landed last year, as well as his 2019 compilation Care Package. source: https://pitchfork.com/news/drake-releasing-new-album-honestly-nevermind-tonight/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Memphis-bred singer/songwriter Julien Baker's third album Little Oblivions revisits familiar themes in her confessional writing style — faith, addiction, mental health and her sense of isolation. However, in the process of writing the album, Julien had to undergo more transformation than ever before. She now has a radically different understanding of God, of her own struggle with addiction, and how she squares that with her own queer identity. She's also attempting to be kinder to herself. The catalyst for much of this change was losing her sobriety in 2018. It prompted her to cancel shows and step away from her music career — the thing that she loved the most — and possibly giving it up altogether, as she went back to University to finish her degree. Many thanks for making this possible — Thank you Julien for your love of God and returning to music-making. The Mohican 100 is a fantastic race. I truly loved this course, 4 loops through Mohican State Park, 2 long loops and then 2 shorter loops. It really helps to break up the race. Typically this is a crazy hot one, we didn't get the intense heat, but we did get 10 hours of torrential rain through the night. The storm turned the trails into streams, fog rolled in, and it didn't let up until the sun came out. There were flash flood warnings in the area, but we pushed on through the night. I took a fall at mile 78 that ultimately decided my fate, but I'll tell ya all about that in this podcast. Thanks for listening! Thanks for listening! The TOGA Boys dive head first into seasonal depression. The sun is about to abandon us, gray clouds are rolling in, and we don't even want to get out of bed. Often I find that we take things for what they are perceived to be. A tragedy is a tragedy. What if a tragedy is actually a story of redemption or hope or love? What if a tragedy isn't a tragedy after all? These are far from original thoughts or original themes, but these are ideas that we often lose over time and we find that we are frantically grasping for them when we can't find something to hold on to. This is how you may feel when you listen to Sprained Ankle. I choose to see these songs as the unperceived. I choose to see these songs as stories of redemption, hope, and love. I ask you to please choose this when listening to the beautiful voice and mesmerizing sounds of Julien Baker. This is an album I have had on repeat for the last several months and so will you.
