Becoming a runner is the beginning of many people's journey into becoming active. It is approachable, and has a low startup cost - (sometimes) you buy some running shoes, and you literally head out the door or jump on an (ideally not moving yet) treadmill and get to setting one foot in front of the other in a faster fashion than you usually do. Running is the gateway to fitness for so many people. But WHERE does one start when they want to begin their journey with a bit more structure? Well, howabout a running club? Courtney chats with Beth, founder of Running Evolution, a running group and business with a ton of resources in the Seattle area. There are options if you are not in Seattle as well, so this is for YOU too! If you want a structured plan for a "couch to 5K plan", or if you really just want a buddy to cry with when those miles really hit you hard, running clubs are where its at. Most triathletes are good at spinning plates. They're high achievers and it's normal practice for them to have a lot going on. Today's guest is no exception. When Bianca Fernandez was growing up, she excelled at her school work but had no interest in PE or sporting activities. At the age of 29 she decided to follow the Couch to 5k programme. She wasn't fast but she finished and was so proud of her achievement that it motivated her on to greater challenges - marathon, 70.3 distance triathlon, and eventually Ironman. By a stroke of luck, she won a Kona spot through their Golden Ticket competition celebrating IM Kona's 40th anniversary. She became the first ever athlete from Dominica to compete in IM Kona. Along the way she's encountered challenges in her life such as working as a female in a male dominated industry, and living in a country where access to sports activities was limited. These experiences have driven not just her participation in triathlon, but the desire to encourage more females into the sport through her charity FundHerTri UK, and at work were she volunteers as part of a group to improve diversity in the workplace. To find out more about Bianca you can find her on IG at Biancatriathlon. You can find her charity, FundHerTriUK, on their Website, and on IG at fundhertriUK. These two links also have excellent resources around getting more women to start lines: She.races and Bethan Taylor Swaine, founder of WellBeing. Bianca was inspired by the book Becoming by Michelle Obama. To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please email her at Info@BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Coffee shops, yoga studios, and boutique donut spots are all usually signs of a shifting neighborhood. But that's not the case for Marcus, the fictional character on the FX on Hulu series The Bear, and Zedtiwu co owner of the Black-owned vegan donut shop Cloudy Donuts in Brooklyn, New York (with two additional locations in Baltimore, Maryland). Zewditu is living in the real life world we imagine Marcus's character could arrive in. We talk about reimagining narratives, digging deeper into craft, process, and passions. What does a chef on a fictional show have to do with flow state? Or an entrepreneurial journey have to do with being a good teammate? Find out on this episode of Personal Podiums.Enjoy!

Ep#104 All too often in the wellness world, especially in the diet and fitness circles, our mental and emotional well being doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's a huge blindspot because how we feel and what we think is so fundamental. Mental health disorders are linked to the prevalence, progression, and outcome of some of today's most pressing chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. They increase the risk for substance abuse and addiction. Our mental health affects how we handle and respond to stress, make choices, relate to ourselves and others. Bottomline, mental health IS health. When our mind is suffering, our whole being suffers. Today's episode is a poignant example of how our bodies have the power to heal our minds and how our minds have the power to heal our bodies. I talk with Nita Sweeney, an award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink , and her upcoming book, Make Every Move a Meditation, which was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. Nita's personal journey of overcoming a lifetime of chronic depression and anxiety through a unique combination of running, writing and meditation is a powerful example of how it really is never too late to reclaim our health and happiness. Her story, a brave and honest account of beating the odds and cultivating inner resilience is incredible inspiration for anyone struggling with mental health or even just stuck in a rut and needing to make some healthy lifestyle changes.
