Living at Odds is a new How To! series about what's holding us together when so much threatens to break us apart. In our first episode, host Courtney Martin talks with two street vendors who operated rivaling merch tents at the same busy intersection during the 2024 election. Steve hawked MAGA caps and Trump-branded pool floaties just a few feet away from Sandra, who sweetened her sales of Harris-Walz campaign shirts with free “Kamala candy.” After so many weeks on the same street corner, the pair negotiated an easy friendship—and even talked about politics. Then came Election Day. Episode #593: Kim Campbell - Contingency Planning, Responding to Adversity, Earning Trust & Respect, Flying in the Face of Fear, and How To Run a Debrief Aviate, Navigate, Communicate - "Aviate, navigate, communicate" is a fundamental principle in aviation that pilots learn early in flight training. It's a priority order that helps pilots stay focused and in control, even when they're under pressure or distracted: Aviate: Keep the plane flying Navigate: Figure out where you are and where you're going Communicate: Talk to air traffic control (ATC) or someone else as needed On March 20, 2003, Kim wrote letters to her loved ones in case she died in battle. Prepare, practice, and plan for contingencies. My college football coach, the late great, Terry Hoeppner used to always say, have a plan, work the plan, plan for the unexpected. As leaders, it's on us to prepare, practice, and plan for contingencies. You don't have to get ready if you stay ready. I love the way Kim's dad helped support her dream to be a fighter pilot. If you want to do this, you have to put in the work. Run hills, and do pull-ups every time you go to the bathroom. He didn't just tell her you can do whatever you want… He created opportunities for Kim to do the necessary work to achieve what she wanted. Kim's telling of the story of how she was hit and how she responded. An amazing example of responding in the face of fear, dealing with adversity in a calm, poised manner, and making a tough decision. Kim's training and her attitude is what set her apart and saved her life. Response to Rejection: Initially Kim was rejected by the Air Force Academy because of a low SAT score. In response, instead of quitting and moving on, she wrote a letter to them every week stating why they should accept her… Which they eventually did. Dealing with fear: What's most important is what we do in the face of fear. We can't freeze. We must take action. The Debrief: Check your rank and ego at the door. Write all the objectives down. Next to each one, grade it a plus or a minus. Find the root causes of each mistake. What lessons can we learn from our mistakes? What will we change for our next mission based on what we learned? Share lessons learned beyond that room. Johnny Bravo - Be humble, approachable, and credible. That's how you earn trust and respect and inspire others to follow.

This week we are talking about: How To Be a Leader On The Field Without Being an A-Hole How To Run a Clear Most Goalies Can Succeed In And much more! Part 1: Coaches will tell you that lacrosse goalies need to be the leader on the field. They are the quarterback. The second coach. All those things are great...but how do you be that kid without being an A-hole. Well? Being a leader on the field is not something that just happens by itself. The goalie doesn't just show up and become a leader. No, it's a process, and it's a process facilitated by great coaching, which, very few goalies have. But even without good coaching, a goalie can still create that leadership persona and help a defense thrive. Part 2: I'm sick and tired of seeing good goalies ruined by bad clears. I'm also sick and tired of seeing new goalies put in situations where they are destined to fail because coaches don't know what the hell they are doing on the sideline. Today I'm going to do my best to do some telestration and show you just what a team needs to do on a clear and not just for youth, but this goes all the way through highschool and into college. Clearing should be simple. It should be systematic. It should be predictable. And when it's done well, it should turn into goals on the opposite end of the field!! As always, I look forward to your questions and comments. And bring your energy tonight before the tryptophan hits you tomorrow. :) Please be sure to join our private Facebook Group just for lacrosse goalies, parents and coaches. It blows my mind how many exercise newbies I meet that think that running is the only way to lose weight. They'll tell me about their most recent two, three, or five mile run at a 10:30 or slower pace, excited and obviously proud of their achievement. But when they ask me how much I run and I reply with “never,” their jaw nearly drops to the floor.“How can you keep in shape without running?” they'll ask me, clearly dumbfounded.“Easy,” I'll tell them. “I do everything but run. Because running is not the only—nor necessarily the best—way to get in shape.”

Summary:Do you really know how to run? If you are a trained, recreational, or novice runner, then the chances of suffering an injury through participation in this most basic of human activities may be higher than you think! A 2015 scientific review identified that for every 1000 hours of running the rates of injury increased from 2.5 injuries in highly-trained distance athletes to 7.7 injuries in recreational runners, and then up to 17.8 injuries in novice runners. Yet despite this strong correlation between injury rate and the ability, skill and capacity to run effectively, it is common to find that little technique guidance and coaching is provided by fitness professionals to teach others how to run. On the 7th of July, 2019, I was able to tick off a goal I have been working towards for over 3 years now and that was to run a sub 100 min half marathon on race day. After a devastating failed attempt last year in October at the Melbourne running festival, I was about ready to quit and give up any chance of ever running this time.In this podcast I talk about those dark times and what I went through after that failed attempt, surgery to remove my gallbladder and the "FUNK" I found myself in, in March this year.I do hope that the lessons I learnt over this time and detail in this podcast may help you to stay the course and keep working towards the goals you are looking to achieve. Whether you are looking to lose weight, learn a new skill like the guitar, or run your first marathon, you will always face times when you question yourself and what you do at these times will determine your outcome. My attempt to achieve this run goal has asked me this question on many occasions and TODAY I was able to stare it down and ensure I WON that battle.I do hope you enjoy the episode and as always if you do enjoy the show and haven't already, please go and give the podcast a quick review and 5 star rating as it would mean the world to me :-)Join the tribe and become a NO BREAKFAST CLUB member today and receive daily workouts sent directly to your email, discounts on products and services and MUCH more planned in the no too distant future. Thundercling: A Super Awesome Rock Climbing Explosion Thunderpod
Brendan Leonard has this incredible knack for making you feel like you could do just about anything you set your mind to, while simultaneously filling you with existential dread that you'll never realize your full potential. How can that be? Because fulfilling potential, doing incredible things, all of it -- it's hard as shit. And he's the most distilled reflection of gritty, gumption-seeping grinding I can conjure. Brendan's made a career out of setting his jaw and getting down to the work, week after week, year after year. In 2011, struggling to build a steady adventure writing career, he launched Semi-Rad.com, a celebration of outdoor life -- by, for, and about the average athlete and adventurer. All these years later, never missing a week without at least one entirely free and generally great essay, Semi-Rad retains a loyal fanbase. Brendan leveraged this success into a number of writing gigs, from Contributing Editor at Climbing Magazine to his first memoir to award winning filmmaker. He's currently a Contributing Editor at the Adventure Journal and columnist for Outside Magazine. He's written eight books with a ninth on the way. He's only 40-years-old, for god's sake... After witnessing and aiding in a rescue on Castleton Tower, Brendan took a break from climbing and decided, you know, to start ultrarunning. As one does. His most recent film, "How To Run 100 Miles," solidified his directorial chops with millions of views on YouTube and a Staff Pick selection on Vimeo. Just so you understand: He's writing full-time (books, essays, articles), directing short films, regularly logging 26-mile days, teaching writing workshops, and probably a dozen other things he's secretly fomenting in the raging creative torrent that serves as his brain. Sit down, pour a cup of coffee, and enjoy listening to one of the finest storytellers working today. And keep a pen and paper handy. Not only does Brendan offer some insight into making one's way as a creative in the outdoor industry, but he also drops a couple bushels of movie, podcast, book, and music recommendations along the way. Want to write for Thundercling? Have a recommendation, comment, or criticism? Shoot us an email at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com. We read and respond to every email. AND REMEMBER THE TEE SHIRT CONTEST! As always, thanks to Ryne Doughty for the sound nuggets in our brain parts!

You've got to run this race of faith and you have to do it intentionally, with perseverance. You will not finish the race well if you don't run intentionally and do those things that enable you to stand. We have a very real enemy that wants to destroy you. How do you run the race of faith? The Bible tells us how. "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace. And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us." Hebrews 11:30-40 How To Run the Race of Faith These men and women of faith were fighting the powers of darkness for the kingdom of God, just like you and me. It's a different generation but the same warfare. "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." Ephesians 6:13-16 When Paul says "above all taking up the shield of faith", he wasn't talking about priority. He was talking about a position. Above all. He is literally saying, "lift up over all the shield of faith." In today's podcast I describe for you what battle looked like back when Paul wrote this letter to the Ephesians, and what he meant by taking up the shield and how it quenches the fiery darts of the enemy. Brendan Leonard is a writer and creative whose stories about adventure in wild places have built him a loyal following in the outdoor world and beyond. Whether it’s writing for his blog Semi-Rad, authoring eight books, or making films such as his recent “How to Run 100 Miles,” Brendan combines humor, introspection, and skilled storytelling in an authentic way that strikes a chord with a wide range of audiences. But as you’ll hear, Brendan’s secret ingredient to success in his creative pursuits is his ability to consistently focus in and grind out the hard work, week after week, year after year. • Brendan is an Iowa native who moved West to attend journalism school at the University of Montana. After struggling with alcohol addiction in his youth, the West’s wide-open spaces brought Brendan a much-needed change of scenery and the opportunity for a fresh start. What began as short hikes around Missoula transformed into an all-in obsession with rock climbing that eventually led to writing gigs with Outside, Men’s Journal, Alpinist, and other well-known publications. Brendan is a shining example of how persistence, hard work, and a willingness to bet on yourself can lead to a fulfilling life and career doing what you love. • We had a wide-ranging, fun, and hilarious conversation about his life and career, and we also managed to wander into a few completely unexpected topics. We chatted about Brendan’s “all-or-nothing” personality, and the challenges and rewards associated with being wired that way. We discussed his ability to focus on the process rather than the goal, and how that approach is beneficial when creating or pursuing an outdoor objective. We obviously talked about climbing, but also discussed ultramarathons, specifically his recent experience running a 103-mile race through the Colorado mountains. And as you’ve come to expect, we covered favorite books, films, and a long list of other interesting topics. • This interview was so much fun, and I really appreciate Brendan having me over to chat. I highly recommend his books "60 Meters to Anywhere" and "Make It Till You Make It", so be sure to check those out.. Also, watch his film “How To Run 100 Miles”-- I’ve watched a ton of ultrarunning films, and this one is my favorite. Check the episode notes for links to all of this and more. The topic for today’s episode is how to run a great meeting. If you’ve been with me over the past couple of months, you know that I’m going through a series each Monday on the Fundamentals of Management, and one of the core skills that every manager needs to develop is the ability to run a great meeting. So, in preparation for this show, like I do every week, I spent some time researching and reviewing some of the advice that is out there on the topic of running a meeting. What’s funny is that almost every single article, video, blog post, and book, on this subject starts off the same way. Like, exactly the same way. Show Notes: http://yourbestmanager.com/67-how-to-run-a-great-meeting-reverse-engineered It goes something like this, [clear throat] We’ve all been there. Sitting around that boardroom table, wishing we were anywhere but in this unnecessary meeting, listening to the boss or some other person drone on about stuff we already know or don’t really need to know. It’s that this point that I am supposed to cut away from whatever vivid depiction of a complete waste of time I’ve drawn out and transition into a word of warning. You know, you should probably listen to what I’m about to teach you, otherwise, the meetings you run could be just like this. Boring, useless, unproductive, and demoralizing to your team. What’s sad though is that 90% (actually, since I’m making this stat up, let’s go with 99%), 99% of the advice that follows begins with this foundational point: The first step to running a great meeting is to ensure the meeting is necessary. Define the purpose of the meeting and if you are an overachiever, write it down and meditate on it. Now, I’m obviously poking fun at this advice for a reason, and it’s not because that’s bad advice. In fact, I agree, there are many meetings that appear to be run without a clear purpose and at best are simply unnecessary uses of time and resources. The problem is, and you know this if you’ve ever run a meeting before, you ran the meeting because you thought there was a good reason for it! I mean, let’s be honest, who has ever decided to run a meeting without an objective in mind? Who sat in their office and thought, I’m going to gather my team together for an hour and a half to intentionally waste their time. No one! So if everyone who runs a meeting runs a meeting with a purpose or objective in mind… why is this always the first piece of advice given? Why does every meeting expert start off by telling people, telling managers and leaders, to define a purpose for the meeting? I don’t know, actually. Maybe the advice always starts off this way because most meetings aren’t run well, and it’s a really easy first step. But instead of regurgitating the common top 10 tips on running a great meeting, I’m going to reverse engineer how to run a great meeting, and hopefully, provide you with some actionable advice you can walk away from this conversation with. You ready? Let’s go. How To Run a Great Meeting, Reverse Engineered (CONTINUE SHOW NOTES)
