Ed McClune, beloved Hoffman Process teacher and coach since, the '80s, is our guest today. As Ed and Drew share at the end, this conversation is a good Hoffman geek-out.* Even though they geek out over all things Hoffman, Ed's whole Quadrinity* shows up in this one. His love shines through as he speaks about the Process, and about how those who come to do this deeply transformational work are courageous heroes. Ed also shares a bit about how the Process now appears in his everyday life. He speaks to the reason he feels we come to this life - to enjoy life in a human body. Ed calls this the sensuality of spirituality. An entire swath of experience has been denied to us because of our patterns; the Process opens us back up to a truly luscious embodied life. MORE ABOUT ED Ed & Bob Ed holds a Master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of San Francisco and is a licensed marriage and family therapist. What Ed likes about teaching the Process is: “Over and over again, through the years of teaching the Hoffman Process, I get to be present as people come into a greater experience of the Light that has always lived ‘far inside' them.” “The summation of all the gifts of the Process comes down to self-love and self-compassion. I don't need to be different, more refined, or successful to be lovable. The Light is the Light, and Ed is Ed. Falling down isn't evidence that there's something wrong with me, only evidence that I'm still alive.” Ed is the father of two sons and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. MORE ABOUT THE SHOW * Geek out:  to become excited or enthusiastic about a favored subject or activity. First known use of geek out: circa 1990 * Quadrinity:  "I coined the word Quadrinity to represent the four aspects of a human being: the Emotional, Intellectual, Physical and Spiritual. The unique capacities and functions of each aspect can be considered separately, but it is the balance of all aspects working together harmoniously that fulfills us as human beings." - Bob Hoffman Check out The Hoffman Connection, Hoffman's radio show (2012) with Ed and Raz on Voice America. Since starting the Mission Forward conversation series in 2014, we’ve had the opportunity to interview some amazing folks: Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, MacArthur Genius grantees, media entrepreneurs, and philanthropists. One of our favorite conversations to date has been with Ed Yong and Liz Neeley. It took place in 2018, shortly after Ed wrote a story in the Atlantic titled: “I Spent Two Years Trying to Fix the Gender Imbalance in My Stories Here’s What I’ve Learned, and Why I Did It.”As an acclaimed author and science writer, Ed was a big deal then, but he’s had quite a run these last few years. This past September, his story on the COVID-19 pandemic, “How Did it Come to This?” took the cover spot of The Atlantic magazine, and since that time, he’s published several other articles on COVID 19 including his most recent: “America Is About to Choose How Bad the Pandemic Will Get.” Given how much we value Ed Yong — and how straightforward he can make even the most complex science story — we decided to resurface this great conversation from a few years back, about building equity and breaking bias in storytelling. In that 2018 story about gender imbalance in his reporting, Ed found that only 24 percent of his last 23 articles quoted sources that were women. And of those stories, 35 percent featured no female voices at all. As Ed shared in his article:“I knew that I care about equality, so I deluded myself into thinking that I wasn’t part of the problem. I assumed that my passive concern would be enough. Passive concern never is.”Yong’s heartbreakingly honest revelation, and several others like it, spurred our desire to dig in on ways that writers, marketers, and communications directors can build equity and break bias in their storytelling, and his story has stuck with us for many years. But it wasn’t just Ed who we spoke with in 2018. We were joined by his partner, the brilliant Liz Neeley, founder and principal of Liminal Creations, where she focuses her time and talent on science communication. Liz served as Executive Director of The Story Collider through August of this year, shepherding real and deeply personal stories of science and living through on-stage events and their eponymous (and extraordinarily popular) podcast. Together, they had a lot to say on the topic of equity in storytelling.Liz Neeley and Ed Yong are extraordinary people and exceptional journalists and communicators. We love this conversation and we’re sure that you will, too. Links & NotesBuilding Equity and Breaking Bias in Storytelling — by Carrie FoxWhat Bias is Hiding in Your Writing? — by Carrie Fox

Jeff focuses on public interest architecture and planning. He is the former Executive Director of First Community Housing, a Non-Profit Affordable Housing Developer in San Jose, CA. As Executive Director of FCH, Jeff built the firm into a nationally recognized pioneer [and early adopter] in the development of sustainable, affordable housing. FCH's impressive record of architecturally significant, sustainable affordable housing in the Silicon Valley has been recognized through multiple local, state and national awards, including an AIA/COTE 2009 Top Green Projects Award, an AIA National Housing Award, an AIA California Chapter "Community Housing Honor Assistance Award", Boston Society of Architects John M. Clancy Award for Socially Responsible Housing, a USGBC "Super Heroes" Award and the State of California GEELA Award for Sustainability. As ED at FCH Jeff developed the first "set-aside" in California for Developmentally Disabled tenants--which is now a core value in all FCH developments. Under Jeff's leadership, FCH pioneered the integration of "Green"/Vegetative roofs in Affordable Housing Developments. Jeff has served as a juror on the national AIA/HUD Housing Awards and on the Cradle to Cradle International Ideas Competition and is a frequent speaker at national conferences on Housing, Sustainability and integrating special needs populations. When you think of shows from the modern era that are known for their rare gems and put it up against the set list from this Chicago performance 26 years ago, it would still be considered rare. Today's episode features some of the earliest performances of the best tracks off of Vitalogy such as Last Exit, Not For You and Spin The Black Circle as well as songs that would be considered impossible to hear in 2020. As Ed battled a cold in front of 2,500 fan club members only days after selling out a 13,000 Chicago Stadium, he declared very early on that they were gonna play a bunch of random shit. The Vitalogy songs were still in their early stages so the fans were treated to a preview of the future, but they were also treated to some of the rarest songs in their catalog from that time. Chaser songs such as Hard To Imagine, Alone and fan club song Angel for the most part are songs that people who have been to multiple shows in the last decade or two probably have yet to witness. Can't forget the magic number 4 on this show as many of the songs mentioned above were being played for their fourth time, including Yellow Ledbetter. The biggest moment from this show developed from Ed's shenanigans during Porch as he had a scare after diving off an amplifier. Ed put on a hell of a show making the crowd think he was legitimately injured before finishing off another furious version of the song.   In this day and age, everyone is at risk of cyber threats. Small businesses are just as vulnerable to cyber attacks as much as the Fortune 500 companies. The question is, what measures should be implemented to prevent such threats? In an interesting discussion, Doug DePeppe, Hilary Wells, Ed Barkel and Bill Nelson explore why small businesses must start paying attention to cybersecurity as well as the importance of protecting their customers, their employees, and their data from cyber breach. They talk about the unseen risks brought about by cyber threats to both start-ups and major corporations and share tips on what organizations can do to enforce reasonable security measures and have a proper “cyber hygiene.” — Watch the episode: Listen to the podcast: Cybersecurity Panel with Doug DePeppe, Hilary Wells, Ed Barkel and Bill Nelson We have a unique podcast. We would call this a panel. There is Doug DePeppe. We have Hilary Wells, Ed Barkel and Bill Nelson. Doug is with  (https://www.lrrc.com/) . What we’re going to talk about is cybersecurity. Tell us about your business and who you serve. We’re a full-service firm. We will talk a little bit later about how we’ve formed a strategic alliance with EOS Edge. We represent companies everywhere from banking to insurance companies to investment advisors, healthcare schools and manufacturing, everything in between. What we found is that all of our clients have access to data. That data needs to be secured. We’ve developed this group to work with our clients and help them, especially the small to medium size clients, develop systems, processes and methodology so that they can help keep their company data safe. Maybe even more importantly, their clients’ data safe. You have been thinking about as a small business owner. Ten, fifteen years ago, I didn’t even need to think about this. I talked to a couple of groups here and their age was similar to mine. Most of them don’t use LinkedIn. Most of them don’t look at their email. What I would think is the awareness of the smaller business owner is not that high. Why did you form what you formed? What was the motivating factor? What we did is we followed our clients and their path through data protection and cyber issues. Data protection, as far as a large industry that first encountered it, was the healthcare industry with the passage of HIPAA. As Ed said, we represent a lot of insurance companies. We represent hospitals systems. We saw that group be the first to try to tackle what information they were collecting, what they were doing to store it, then their obligations to protect it. The financial services industry was next. We had Gramm-Leach-Bliley and other regulations from FINRA come out. Our regulators are now requiring us to have these plans, these systems and these policies. How do we do this and how do we stay compliant? In the past five years, what we’ve seen is we’ve gone from regulated entities who are doing what they had to do because they were told to do so to an interesting standard that’s developed for all industries across the spectrum regardless of whether or not a regulator is directing what you do and how you do it. It’s finding the customers or making buying decisions in part based on how are you doing in this field? If I’m going to trust you with my information, how do I know that you’re doing what you can to protect it? That’s not a Facebook problem. It’s not a Twitter problem. Businesses of all sizes have employee information. They have customer information. They have information to be protected. What we’ve done is we’ve transitioned from advising on what the law is, which can be daunting to bringing to the table for our small and mid-sized clients an opportunity for them to assess what their particular risk is and how they can try to mitigate...

Ed McLaughlin is the President of Operations and Technology at Mastercard, where he has worked for the past 14 years. In his current role Ed oversees all of Mastercard’s technology functions including the global network, processing platforms, information security, and technology operations. As Ed points out, working in technology doesn’t mean he is sitting in a cubicle coding all day. Work in technology is very much a people centered role. “I think technology has always been people at its heart. What really matters is who are the people, and how well we use the stuff, how good we're at it, and how much we understand what all of that's for. Technology is always for a purpose, and it's people that give it that purpose. Yeah, I spend a lot of time. I still code every once in a while, but it's not the work of doing it, it's really working together to create the value that is. I think just about everything we do is either done through or with technology these days. It's just really how we make things, how humans work together.” When it comes to the doom and gloom talk about AI and automation, Ed says he is “profoundly optimistic” He believes that these advances in technology have the potential to free humans up to do the things they actually want to do. He says, “When I hear talk of a jobless future, I just think it's just a lack of imagination. I mean, when I think of all the things I wish we could be doing if we could have more resources freed up, my lists have lists.” Mastercard is actually harnessing AI inside of the organization in order to flag fraudulent activity for customers, to help employees collaborate effectively, and to make it possible for employees to continuously learn and grow. One tool they use is called Safety Net, which monitors all transactions in real time and looks for fraudulent behaviors. It helps protect the company from the 200 fraud attempts that happen every minute, which would nearly impossible to do with just human employees. Another program they have in place is called NuDetect, which can detect if someone is trying to sign into a customer account using a stolen identity. The AI looks at behaviors such as what height the phone is at when signing in, the way the person types, whether they are sitting or standing, etc…. With all of the new technological advances and the fast rate of change in today’s world of work, how are companies supposed to keep up? Ed says it is important to stay constantly curious and don’t get stuck doing things as they have always been done before just because change is hard. “I do think, and this is hard, you need to have an enthusiasm for what's new, not to be fashionable, not for fashion's sake, but to always be questioning. I think it's a skeptical enthusiasm of, "If a new capability is there, does it allow me to do what I want to do better?" I think as long as you're centered on what you're trying to do, then all the new capabilities I find just profoundly exciting.” What you will learn: How to create great digital experiences for employees Why Ed is optimistic about AI and automation A look at some cool AI programs Mastercard has created such as NuDetect and SafetyNet How Mastercard upskills and retrains their employees What the office space is like at Mastercard How they are keeping up with the pace of change How to balance information and data with privacy and security

Is your organization struggling with people problems? Then don't miss this episode of Geeks Geezers and Googlization. For 25 years, Human Resources has been fighting for respect, for the proverbial seat at the table. But management still views HR as the compliance cops, payroll administrators, and the department to avoid. Why? HR Strategist Ed Krow joined us for this podcast to discuss why HR continues to be its own worst enemy and recommends steps it can take to be not only seen, but heard and respected in the C-Suite. Changing the “cringe” perception when it comes to the thought of HR departments The general perception of HR departments can be summed up by what a conference go-er said to Ed after a speaking session. He spoke about how frustrated he was with HR, as it “made his life more difficult by offering little assistance and roadblocks at every turn.” It’s this common and often all too accurate perception of HR that limits the reach of HR’s voice when it comes to their company’s C-Suite. If HR truly wants to make the changes that will turn the tide on this reality and gain a seat at the table, they’re going to have to wake up to the progressive HR movement that is happening. HR needs to be on the train of the current progressive HR movement, or they’re going to get left behind. It's time to be proactive and offer solutions to internal problems. As Ed states, “Business owners don’t want to hear about problems. They want to hear about solutions.” HR should be so much more than a hiring, firing, and “necessary evil” department to CEOs. For those ready to disrupt HR, arm yourself with the knowledge of today’s ever-changing technology, notice the problems within your organization, and come up with solutions that propel your company towards success. One of the most important things to remember is the position of the CFO and CEO and what they truly care about. What is it they want to hear? Once you walk outside the doors of HR, turnover rates and hiring processes are not the topics that turn the heads of CEOs and CFO’s. What’s going to make HR stand out is when they’re able to identify how turnover directly affects their company, create innovative solutions to reduce these ill effects, and then show the higher-ups the fiscal result from these actions and how their creative problem-solving benefited the company as a whole. These are the conversations that will allow the voice of Human Resource Departments to be heard and give them a seat at the table that’s noticed. Questions for Ed? Ed Mylett is one of my favorite entrepreneurs in the game and someone that I know can help you change your life. Listen for the biggest lessons I've learned from Ed and make sure to buy his book to learn more!   Here are some of the biggest learnings based on an article I wrote for Fearless Motivation: 1. Max Out Your Morning As Tim Ferriss said, “If you win the morning, you win the day.” High-performance Ed Mylett agrees entirely. One of his first tips in the book is to start creating a morning routine that sets you up for success. As you can’t always control the middle of your day, you can always control the beginning and end. Most people lose control of their day within the first ten minutes because of hitting the snooze, browsing social media, and not having any real structure. Instead of reacting, you should start taking control of your day as soon as you wake up. Here’s how Ed structures his mornings: Wakes up early – starts each day between 4:30-5 am Hydrates with at least 16 oz of water Takes a cold shower with breathing exercises Spends time meditating or praying Sets his intentions for the day Exercises for at least 60 minutes 2. Max Out Your Mind Ed goes in depth about the power of the mind in his book. He says that if you want real change, you must first change what you’re thinking about. As he says, “Your subconscious thoughts are always trying to prove you right. Change 10% of your thoughts and you can dramatically change your life.” Here’s what he recommends doing to upgrade your mindset: Focus on your beliefs. Make sure you are always thinking and believing the thoughts that will help you get further in life and business. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. As he said, “Your obsessions become your possessions.” Think of life happening for you, not to you. Instead of thinking the world is out to get you, reframe every challenge as a way to learn, grow, and evolve. Stay blissfully dissatisfied. Spend 80% of your time being grateful for everything in your life to appreciate and attract more. But spend 20% of the time expecting more from yourself to reach higher levels of success. 3. Max Out Your Body If you’ve seen any pictures of Ed you know this guy is a machine when it comes to never skipping a workout. He’s committed to fitness because he understands its more than just health, it’s creating the habit of discipline. As Ed said, “Keeping a healthy physical routine is one more way you are keeping a promise to yourself. It’s a daily validation that you are worthy and value yourself enough to keep your promises to you.” Here’s what he recommends doing to get into amazing shape: Hire a trainer or get an accountability buddy. Follow inspiring social media accounts to keep you motivated Eat healthy as you can’t out exercise a bad diet Train in the morning to not skip it later Listen to music to stay motivated and inspired Measure your workouts and diet Learn how to win the morning w/my morning routine e-course: https://inspire-your-success1.teachable.com/p/win-the-morning/

This was a light news week for Disney movie news, but the rest of the world has really made up for it. Before we get to the Disney news, I wanted to offer a resource to parents struggling to speak with their kids about race. There is a lot of craziness going on not too far from where I live and even when we agree that racism is bad, it doesn't necessarily mean we always know how to talk to our kids about it. I wanted to include this article in case anyone is having trouble talking with their kids about race.  Does Obi Wan Kenobi Really Need A Standalone Film? The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Lucasfilm is in talks with Stephen Daldry to direct a standalone Obi Wan Kenobi film. It's something fans have asked for, but I'm not sure if we need it. As Ed points out on the podcast this week, “need” and “want” are two entirely different things. Depending on your level of Star Wars love, fans can have a very different view of which standalone films will actually enhance the Star Wars universe. There are some people who don't feel like we “need” episode 7, 8, and 9. Those people are wrong, but they do exist. However, I fit snugly in the camp that isn't terribly excited about an Obi Wan standalone flick. Obi Wan has been in four Star Wars movies. That count rises to seven if you include his force ghost appearances in the original trilogy and his vocal cameo in The Force Awakens. Add in the hundreds of episodes of The Clone Wars on Disney XD and you have a character that has been thoroughly explored in cinema and television. This isn't the world of Star Wars advancing. This is a look back. A nostalgia play. With Rogue One and The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm showed that they can expand the universe, introduce us to new characters that we love, and not rest only on nostalgia to get fans to the theater. For me, an Obi Wan standalone film is a move in the wrong direction. Disney Preparing For Bob Iger's Exit? It's taken a few years, but it looks like the Disney company is finally starting to actually prepare for Bob Iger to leave the company. Disney just extended the contracts for three key C-suite executives and significantly boosted the pay of another one they hope sticks around. Disney extended the contracts for Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy and Chief Strategy Officer Kevin Mayer through 2021. Both will also get pay increases, from $1.3 million to $1.5 million. In addition, Disney extended the contract for General Counsel Alan Braverman through July 2019, but left his pay at $1.6 million. Finally, Chief Human Resources Officer Jayne Parker received a pay raise from $865,000 to $975,000. With Iger slated to leave the company in 2019 - for real this time - each of these executives will be key to helping the new CEO learn the ropes. It is also possible that this move signals that Disney will be looking for an outside successor to the Disney throne, but I hope that doesn't happen. Replacing Bob Iger will not be an easy task, but he can't stay CEO forever. It looks like Disney is finally preparing for the inevitable transition. Can MoviePass Save The Movies? It's easy to see why so many people are excited about MoviePass. The service promises to offer virtually unlimited movies at your local theater for only $10/month. Even for casual cinephiles it is a great deal. The service isn't perfect. There are no blackout dates, but you also can't use it on 3-D or IMAX features. Plus, you have to buy your ticket within 100 yards of the location where you want to use it, which is far from convenient. Oh, and you can only buy one ticket at a time. But MoviePass is missing the point. People aren't skipping movies because they are too expensive. They are skipping the theaters because the movie experience sucks. Here's what they can do to fix it. Sam Jackson is NOT Happy About Nick Fury Being Excluded It turns out Nick Fury isn't just missing Black Panther. It was recently confirmed that the character will sit out both Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled sequel. In an interview with Yahoo, the actor said: I'm not in Avengers 3 and 4. They're shooting them now, and they haven't called me yet. They wouldn't let me go to Black Panther-ville, so it's kinda like how you gonna make a black Marvel movie and not let Nick Fury show up in it?! As the Marvel Universe expands, it will be more common for actors and actresses to feel left out of certain get togethers. Contract negotiations, outside projects, and story considerations will keep characters out of films. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) famously got a roommate after he was left out of Captain America: Civil War. If we get more shorts like that, a few actors missing a movie will be well worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPNBKT6JLSU Japan's Thor: Ragnarok Trailer is Probably Better Than Ours If you haven't seen the Japanese version of the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, your life isn't as good as it could be. Ben E. Clement Museum – Marion, Kentucky Welcome to Made in Museums!  I’m your guide, Sandy DeWald, and on every episode we’ll explore a museum that will challenge, tease, and intrigue us.  If you’ve ever wondered, “Now, why would there be museum about that?” then this is the podcast for you.  If you enjoy learning the backstory behind some very curious collections, then keep listening and find out the answer to this episode's question, “Now, why would there be a museum about the mineral fluorite?” I was so excited to visit the Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum.  This museum is remarkable for its singular focus – it’s all about the mineral fluorite (also known as fluorspar).  How interesting can a museum be that’s focused around just a single mineral?  Very interesting, as it turns out.  Driving to Marion, Kentucky, I sat down with Ed Clement -- son of the founder of the museum.  Fluorite is probably one of the most commercially important minerals that you’ve never heard of.  Ed and I discuss the history of fluorite and the stories behind mining this mineral in Western Kentucky.  Ed is a natural storyteller and the stories he shares about his family, how the museum got started (in the backyard of his father’s house), and the backstory behind some of the objects in the collection are fascinating and really highlight his family’s personal connection to this museum.  Originally this area of Western Kentucky focused on mining the mineral galena for the lead and silver content.  Fluorspar was originally a waste product of the mining process.  Then in 1873 it was discovered that fluorspar lowered the melting temperature of iron to remove impurities (flux) during smelting.  After that discovery, additional uses for fluorite in steel, aluminum, chemicals, glass, and nuclear processes lead to a mining boom in this area of Western Kentucky from 1900 – 1950 due to the unique geological forces that created a fluorspar pocket.  Ben E. Clement leased mines in this area and recognized the beauty in the unique, cubic structure and variety of colors found in fluorspar when it was still thought of as a by-product to be thrown away during the mining process.  His expertise and connections allowed him to collect truly unique and stunning examples of this mineral.  Some weigh hundreds of pounds while others fit into the palm of your hand, some may be damaged or broken on the outside but reveal inner beauty.   Each object in the collection is a rare specimen in the mineral world, but also carries a unique acquisition or personal family backstory.   Check out the show notes at www.madeinmuseums.com for additional details of some of the specimens in the collection along with pictures I took during my visit.  Some of the key specimen in this impressive collection include: George Wild Carved Collection – one of two carved collections at the museum, this group includes animal and facet carvings in fluorspar by a world-renowned, family of carvers, led by George Wild from Idar-Obserstein, Germany. Fluorite is so soft that it can be carved, but too soft to be worn as jewelry.  Listen to Ed tell the story of what happened when his Mom was holding one of these carved pieces.  Octahedron Collection – unique to its natural cubic shape, if you chip off all the corners of the cube you get an octahedron.  Of course, you’ve got to perfectly chip off the corners at the right angles to get a perfect octahedron.  This collection is also a good example of the variety of colors found in fluorite.  Natural fluorite is clear, but various impurities create the nine different colors found.  “Bird In Flight” – gorgeous, black fluorite specimen unique for two reasons:  its shape looks like a black bird in flight, and the fact that it’s known as a “floater”.  If you visit, look underneath the “bird” – you’ll see the same cubic shapes all over the bottom as you find on the top.  That means the fluorite cubes formed on a softer surface, which then wore away without damaging the cubic shapes.  Very rare and very unusual to find such a specimen whole and undamaged – and just wait until you hear the story of how it was found.  First Specimen Collected – a delicate shade of mauve in color, this is the first specimen Ben Clement collected and kept at his house before there was a museum. “Knife-Edge Fluorite” – natural, high-polished finish, this specimen is slick, beautiful and dangerous.  Razor sharp edges finished to an extreme perfection.  As Ed puts it, “we’ve never seen its equal in edge sharpness in a specimen this size.”  Crystal Cathedral – a quartz crystal spire sitting on a “rooftop” of purple fluorite cubes – Ed’s Mom’s favorite specimen. “Slab” Specimen Room – stepping into this darkened room filled with “slab” or cross-sections of fluorite lit from below highlights the beautiful internal patterns showing how the cube structure forms.  Similar to tree rings, you can actually see the cube rings in the cross-sections showing how the crystal grew.  Squire Riley Carving Collection – Squire Riley was a night watchman that was a master woodcarver.  Picking up files and rasps instead of chisels, he turned to carving fluorite due to its softness (sitting at 4 on the Mohs Hardness Scale). Glow-in-the-Dark Rocks – all I can say is “Wow!”.  Totally unique and rare collection.  With the room lights on, it just looks like a normal wall of ignoble rocks.  But turn off the fluorescent lights and magic happens – a wall full of glow-in-the-dark rocks!  After talking about some of the specimens in this collection, we moved on to the photography collection.  Photography is one of my hobbies, so it was a real treat to see photographs depicting the mining industry in the early 1900’s.  Listening to Ed tell the story of Hudson Mine collapse really brought home the dedication of the miners and the dangers they faced every day they went underground.  Get out there and visit! It may look unremarkable from the outside, but the Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum is a truly spectacular museum.  No fancy signage, no fancy building, old-fashioned typed labels – this is exactly the type of museum I want to showcase on my podcast.  Highlighting these hidden treasures built from a focused passion with more stories housed in one building than you could cover in a single visit.  If you’re a museum nerd like me, then you have got to add this museum to your “must-see” list and tell them, “I heard about you on the Made in Museums podcast.”

There is no getting away from it - the person ultimately responsible for organisational culture is the leader. It’s what they do, what they pay attention to, and what they encourage and reward that will ultimately shape the organisation’s culture. Interestingly, it is also what the leaders don’t do and don’t pay attention to that can be a tremendously powerful culture shaping factor. As Ed said in the interview:"When it comes to culture, leaders get what they settle for." What you will learn in this episode what the key attribute of a successful culture is how to determine whether you should be worried about your team’s or organisation’s culture the circumstances in which culture is particularly important for an organisation what people in organisations pay most attention to when it come to culture when it makes sense to evaluate culture using quantitative and qualitative tools what changing a culture really entails whether small, light-touch interventions can be effective in changing culture what a CEO or a leader should do when they want to see more of a coaching or innovation culture in their organisation what Ed thinks of starting culture projects "in the middle" what’s “personizing” and why it's important  More about the guest Edgar Schein  is a Society of Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus and a Professor Emeritus at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Cheat Sheet The more work you do on your campaign before you launch the more success you will have. But no matter how much you plan, Global Politics (and other factors 100% out of your control) get a vote. Today’s guest, Ed Barton of Virtuali-Tee, saw his production costs go up 33% overnight after the UK voted for Brexit and the Pound collapsed. Setting up plans for likely contingencies is a great start. But when things break down (and they will) or a blind spot is revealed, that is when the real work begins! Communication is the key to weathering the inevitable storm of backer emails asking when their product is supposed to arrive. With the media surrounding Crowdfunding beginning to sour on projects not delivering, you have to do everything you can to not be lumped into that narrative.   About This Episode Imagine being able to look at your body, and see your heart beat, lungs breathe, liver processing, stomach churning, and intestines digesting, That is what you can now do with Virtuali-Tee, a new product from Curiscope that Founder and CEO, Ed Barton, hopes will help kids learn to love biology. The Virtuali-Tee uses your smartphone and a funky tee-shirt that looks like it is out of the 1980’s hit game, Space Invaders. The shirt is essentially an advanced QR-Code that, when you combine it with your smartphone or VR device, lets you look at a virtual representation of your anatomy ON your body. You can literally dive into your blood vessels and learn how the heart delivers oxygen to muscles and tissues. Crowdfunding is MADE for cool projects and creators like Ed and his team. For their successful launch, Ed was extremely well prepared by most standards: He had an email list He had a working prototype He lined up a manufacturer in the United States that could meet the high printing quality standards required to make the magic happen. He and his co-founder went to conferences, demoed their product and signed people up to their email list IN PERSON! Even then, Ed delivered the Virtuali-Tee to all backers about 6 weeks late, (“early” by Crowdfunding standards) and he wasn’t happy about it. Why’s that? As Ed puts it… “Business is a string of problems that you solve to get the successes along the way.” Some of these problems are foreseeable and contingencies can be planned. After Brexit, the Pound dropped 25% overnight. This caused his production costs go up 33% as a result (the maths, as the Brits say, works I swear) and meant that he had start from square one to source a new manufacturer able to meet the high standards required to make the magic happen. Communication is what saved his company’s reputation. Ed made it his policy to respond personally to all emails and Backer comments within 24 hours. The results of being on top of his communication, and ultimately delivering a great product, has meant hundreds of repeat orders from teachers all over the world and the beginning of what Ed hopes will revolutionise how kids are taught and engage in school.   Resources Mentioned Virtuali-Tee Kickstarter Campaign Curiscope.com The VR Great White Shark Video Curiscope Facebook Page Curiscope on Twitter Startup Podcast

Psychiatric chief complaints comprise about 6 or 7% of all ED visits, with the numbers of psychiatric patients we see increasing every year. The ED serves as both the lifeline and the gateway to psychiatric care for millions of patients suffering from acute behavioural or psychiatric emergencies. As ED docs, besides assessing the risk of suicide and homicide, one of the most important jobs we have is to determine whether the patient’s psychiatric or behavioral emergency is the result of an organic disease process, as opposed to a psychological one. There is no standard process for this. With the main objective in mind of picking up and appropriately managing organic disease while improving flow, decreasing cost and maintaining good relationships with our psychiatry colleagues, we have Dr. Howard Ovens, Dr. Brian Steinhart and Dr. Ian Dawe discuss this controversial topic... His story is as devastating as it is inspiring, which is why it’s an important one to share with all of you. TWEET: One choice can change the course of your life forever. Find out more on this episode The profound impact of the choices Ed and his friends made. As Ed delves deeper into the details of his crash on June 10, 1999, he shares in heart-breaking detail the moments that led to his traumatic brain injury and the death of his friends. Approaching the subject with honesty helps to connect Ed’s story with the overwhelming process of recovery, coping with loss, and feelings of guilt he faced at just 18 years of age. Because of his traumatic brain injury, it was difficult for Ed to process what happened in the days following the crash. Facing the process of recovery following a traumatic brain injury. The recovery process was challenging - Ed had to learn how to eat, walk, and do just about everything that once came naturally. As he moved through recovery, it became clear that Ed was lucky to be alive. It’s with this attitude of gratitude that Ed eventually came to share his journey with others, in the hopes that he can help to prevent the devastating impact of distracted driving and driving under the influence. TWEET: Dealing with a #TraumaticBrainInjury and finding a way to #inspire others The dangers of the “this could never happen to me” mindset. The fact is, the situation Ed found himself could happen to anyone. It’s all about choices. As Ed discovered in his own journey, the choices he made that night and in the years following his injury led to some harsh realities. Ed shared how, as a teenager, he felt - as most of us do at that age - invincible. In spite of his gut instinct telling him not to get in the car, Ed figured, “why not? What’s the worst that could happen?” It’s this mindset, according to Ed, which leads to many tragedies. From distracted driving to driving under the influence, the belief that “this could never happen to me” all too often influences us to make poor choices. And those choices can lead to tragedy. Ed’s wake up call and evolution into a speaker. After years of struggling with alcoholism and finding a way to cope with the events of that night in June of 1999, Ed finally had the wake up call he so desperately needed in 2013. It came from his wife. After she helped him see just how dire his situation was, Ed was able to find his way to recovery from addiction. Today, he shares his inspiring story with schools and at events around the country. Through the power of his story, Ed helps others see just how dangerous our distractions can be. The fact is, Ed could have seen his tragedy as just that - a tragedy. Instead, in true Dream Chasers fashion, he chose to make it his motivation to help change the mindset of others. To save lives. To see beyond one life-changing event and into the bright future that exists in spite of it and also because of it. TWEET: I thought I was invincible.
