Interesting question. I've known a lot of leaders, bad and good. But can you actually be a good leader and have bad character? Can you achieve all your commitments, be compassionate, be brave, accountable (although I believe accountability and character go hand in hand) and still be a good leader.. can you be a good leader if you are harassing a subordinate, cheating the company, or lying to shareholders? The answer is yes (listen we will explain), for a while at least, and then like Boris Johnson, whose governing body gave him a vote of “no confidence”, often get to an unpleasant crossroad. If you have character issues in your organization, one of the primary indicators is turnover. Look beneath the obvious here and determine why. Employee's will vote "no confidence" like many in the British Parliament did, by resigning. In this talent war market can you afford to lose high talent because of low character?

Failure as a leader can be small and not noticeable, and then it can be epic. This one's epic and tragic if you look at loss of life, these families will suffer forever. If you consider the generations impacted, the children of the children who will not be here, the teachers who died now with motherless children. Then the mourning of the community, the cost of re-building a school. This failure was epic and tragic. We're there signs? There had to be! It's my position and experience  epic failures in leadership don't just happen. There are key indicators like not handling a past issue well, not stepping up to take responsibility when he should, blaming others for failures where ownership isn't the issue, where the objective should be to fix the problem.

Well, if you are looking for solutions in all the same places with the same people, the solutions will be limited. Suspending disbelief about finding solutions to turnover, manufacturing challenges or quality issues will help you get to better solutions. Approach these topics with an open mind. Start planning sessions with an openness to all ideas, not just yours and your favorite people. You will be pleasantly surprised by the ideas that get surfaced. One of those could be the answer.

The other extreme camp, the only good gun is a pop gun, get rid of them all. Our lack of willingness to put ideas on the table, and objectively seek the root cause leads to absolutely no progress.
