Artificial Intelligence isn't just changing our work—it's reshaping who we are. In this compelling Not All Hood conversation, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Candace Kelley dive into the unseen influence of AI on our creativity, our thinking, and our emotional lives. As AI tools make it easier for anyone to sound brilliant, the question becomes: what makes us truly original? They discuss how tech like auto-tune and AI-generated writing have blurred the lines between human and machine-made, and why the real power lies with those who know how to use AI without losing themselves. From students fiercely defending their AI-aided essays to professors requiring handwritten work just to ensure authenticity—this episode questions what ownership, authorship, and creativity really mean in a digital world. We also tackle the shifting landscape of DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) and how language and branding around it are being reimagined in real-time.

In today's episode Judith Germain speaks to Joris Merks-Benjaminsen about leadership consistency and ethical actions. They discuss the challenge of ensuring leadership consistency across an organisation, not just at the top. They note how organisational culture and values can drift over time if not actively maintained. Joris explains how leaders can inadvertently create inconsistencies through their behaviours and decision-making processes. Key Takeaways Leadership consistency requires balancing opposing forces (e.g. empathy vs accountability) while under constant pressure Small, conscious leadership behaviors have magnified impact on organisational culture Effective leaders must actively cultivate psychological safety and open communication with their teams "Managing without power" mindset helps leaders tune into team needs and reduce unintended pressures In this conversation Judith and Joris explore the idea of personalising leadership to the needs of individual team members. They emphasise the importance of creating psychological safety, encouraging feedback, and being conscious of how one's position of power can impact others. Joris suggests the "managing without power" mindset as a way to stay grounded. Joris Merks-Benjaminsen is an award winning author. His latest book is titled 'Managing without power'. Joris had a leading role in Google's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives, and was one of the highest scoring managers in the company's history. Should Christians support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), or is it a secular ideology that conflicts with biblical truth? In today's culture, DEI is everywhere—from workplaces to schools to churches. But does DEI align with the gospel, or does it push a worldview that goes against biblical justice, unity, and equality? In this episode, we break down the true meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion through a Christian lens, comparing it with Scripture, biblical justice, and God's design for humanity. We explore key questions like: ✅ Is DEI rooted in biblical justice or secular ideology? ✅ How should Christians respond to DEI in workplaces and churches? ✅ Does DEI promote division or true unity in Christ? ✅ What does the Bible say about race, justice, and inclusion? If you're a Christian wrestling with these questions, this video is for you!
Gerry Crispin returned to speak to his thoughts on the recent DEI executive order. Gerry wrote an article, Signals Amidst the Noise, that gives some important context for everyone. The weather vane seems to be swinging wildly these days, and offering some thoughtful perspective on where and how this fits into our historical timeline will be helpful for people. One step forward, two steps back, maybe three steps forward another day.We also pulled in Jackye Clayton, Founder of PeoplePuzzles to share her perspective and to spill the beans on her year-long secret: She is on the next season of Amazing Race?!

The directive, which targets Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs, marks one of the administration's most sweeping actions against federal diversity initiatives to date. In this episode, Ishreen synthesizes insights from the previous three episodes, focusing on the transformative potential of DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) 3.0. Ishreen emphasizes the importance of self-awareness as a starting point for collective growth, highlighting that true openness requires vulnerability and a willingness to engage with discomfort. They also address the necessity of engaging with resistance, framing opposition not as a barrier but as an opportunity for deeper understanding and dialogue. KEY TAKEAWAYS Transformation in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) begins with self-reflection and confronting personal biases. This self-awareness is crucial for collective evolution and creating a shared understanding of inclusion. True openness involves stepping out of comfort zones and engaging in vulnerable listening. It is not merely about accepting different viewpoints but actively seeking unfamiliar perspectives and embracing the discomfort that comes with it. Real progress in DEIB requires engaging with those who oppose it. This engagement should focus on dialogue and understanding rather than winning arguments, allowing for a collective narrative that includes diverse perspectives. The insights gained from self-awareness and openness should be applied in real-world settings. This includes bringing personal reflections to collaborative spaces and actively seeking ways to engage with differing viewpoints. The goal is to create workplaces where DEIB is not just a checklist but a dynamic reality. This involves transforming conflict into opportunities for growth and ensuring that every voice is heard and valued within the organization. BEST MOMENTS "Self-awareness isn't just about personal growth. It's about collective evolution." "True openness is not comfortable. It's not safe. It requires a willingness to step beyond what you know." "Real progress demands engaging with resistance. It's easy to talk to those who already agree with us." "Openness is a practice, not a concept. It's about actively seeking out what's unfamiliar." "Imagine a workplace where DEIB isn't a box to be ticked, but a lived experience where every voice is heard and valued." In this episode, Ishreen delves into the transformative power of openness, curiosity, and vulnerable listening within the realms of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Ishreen emphasizes the importance of stepping into unfamiliar spaces with a genuine desire to learn and connect, highlighting how this approach can foster empathy and collaboration. Ishreen also invites listeners to a groundbreaking breakfast meeting on December 4th in Central London, aimed at pushing the boundaries of DEIB thinking. KEY TAKEAWAYS True openness in the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) involves stepping into unfamiliar spaces with curiosity and a willingness to learn, even when it feels uncomfortable. Cultivating curiosity can transform leaders and drive sustainable change, turning DEIB from abstract principles into lived experiences that enrich workplace culture. Listening to understand rather than to respond is crucial for building connections and transforming conflict into collaboration, allowing for a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. Real change occurs when individuals engage in conversations with those who hold opposing views. Encouraging open discussions with sceptics about DEIB can transform resistance into curiosity, ultimately leading to collaboration and a more inclusive workplace environment. What are the real ways that we can embrace the complexity of our experiences? How can we let go of a scarcity mindset in favor of a mindset of abundance? How can we see the stories of others as adding something important rather than taking something away from us?What does it actually look like to make more space for people and their stories? In this episode, Ishreen continues to discuss the Belonging Pioneers Framework for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB 3.0). Ishreen discusses the evolution of DEIB practices, highlighting the transition from compliance-focused initiatives to a more strategic and holistic approach that fosters innovation and collaboration within organizations. Ishreen emphasizes the importance of creating psychologically safe environments where all employees feel valued and connected to a shared purpose. KEY TAKEAWAYS The podcast discusses the progression of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) from a compliance-focused approach (1.0) to a more strategic and goal-oriented phase (2.0), and now towards a holistic and adaptable framework (3.0). Creating a psychologically safe environment is crucial for employees to feel accepted and to foster a sense of belonging within the organization. Leaders should align their purpose with the organization's purpose, promoting a culture where individual and collective goals are congruent. The DEIB 3.0 framework emphasizes the importance of cultivating a culture of emergence, where the focus is on creating an environment that allows for innovation and collaboration. Business leaders are encouraged to take an active role in driving change within their organizations by implementing the Belonging Pioneers Framework. BEST MOMENTS "The legacy of change needs to be driven by you." "When you're in compliance, the maximum benefit you can get is some form of stability." "We need to take a holistic approach... everybody has an experience of winning." "You're starting to build your reputation in this area, and you've got certain minimum standards that are being met." "When you're up here, you're agile, you're innovative, ideas are coming out, and they're being implemented." In this episode, Ishreen introduces the concept of DEIB 3.0, a transformative approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace. Highlighting a collaboration with Metro Bank, she shares insights on their purpose-led partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board, aimed at increasing female participation in cricket through the Women and Girls Fund. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ishreen introduces DEIB 3.0, a new approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that aims to create inclusive cultures where employees feel valued and connected to a shared purpose. The current backlash against DEIB initiatives is attributed to resistance from existing power structures, particularly among white men who perceive these initiatives as biased against them. A shift in focus is needed to move towards a win-win dynamic. Metro Bank is highlighted as a collaborator in the DEIB 3.0 movement, showcasing their partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board to promote women and girls in cricket through a co-developed Women and Girls Fund. The partnership between Metro Bank and the ECB is structured as a six-year commitment, emphasizing the importance of time in making meaningful and lasting changes at the grassroots level. DEIB 3.0 emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and a data-led approach to identify focus areas, ensuring that initiatives deliver social benefits while also achieving return on investment (ROI) targets for all stakeholders involved. BEST MOMENTS "We wanted to make sure we were taking the time on how we develop the Women and Girls Fund." "We didn't want just any sort of traditional sponsorship. We were really looking for a partnership that was centered around true purpose." "To really make any meaningful impact at a grassroots level, it takes time." "An over-focus on representation at the cost of equity, inclusion, and belonging is what set up this win-lose dynamic." "DEIB 3.0 aims to move DIB from a conversation that has a win-lose dynamic to a win-win approach." Dalila Wilson-Scott serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer of Comcast Corporation, and President of the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation. Dalila oversees all Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives and philanthropic strategy with a focus on advancing digital equity and economic mobility through Project UP, which is supported by a $1 billion commitment. In 2023, Dalila was honored as WICT Woman of the Year in recognition of her work developing women leaders who transform the media, entertainment and technology industry. She has been named one of the “Most Powerful Women in Cable” by Cablefax Magazine; one of the “Most Powerful Women in Business” by Black Enterprise; and an “Innovative Rising Star: Building Communities” by Forbes magazine among other honors. In this episode, we discuss: ● The importance of data and transparency in DEI ● 3 key lessons for running a Foundation ● Looking at diversity through a holistic business lens to include employees, suppliers, customers, and product creation Key Takeaways: ● Diversity: It's Not Just Business, It's Human: I'm done debating the business case for diversity—it's crystal clear, yet it hasn't solved the leadership imbalance. Let's focus on the human case. Look around the C-suites of S&P 100 companies: 70% of executives are white men, while they make up only 30% of the US population. Despite progress in diversifying executive teams over the past decade, these numbers don't lie. Our system is still broken. It's past time to fix a system that continues to perpetuate unfairness and bias, not just because diversity is proven to be good for business, but because it's the right thing to do. Let's not hide the need for fairness, justice, and ethics behind a business case. ● Building Solutions Through Continuous Listening: Listening to the people you aim to serve is crucial, and it's not a one-time act—it's an ongoing practice. This dialogue informs how programs need to evolve to meet changing needs. When you continuously listen and adapt, you build solutions that resonate and have lasting impact. It's about creating a dynamic partnership with those you serve. ● The Importance of Community: The power of community cannot be overstated. We know the phrase “it takes a village”. This principle extends across all areas of life. Small businesses supported by their communities are more likely to succeed. Families with community support are more likely to thrive. Individuals who feel part of a work community are more likely to flourish. Humans are social creatures; we struggle in isolation but thrive when we come together. Building and nurturing community bonds is key to collective success and well-being. Coming from a predominantly working class neighborhood, he also saw the impact any leader can have at all levels of society and particularly the effects leaders have on those who are most marginalized. These life experiences inform his philosophy that good leadership is equitable leadership. Tip has worked with dozens of organizations ranging from community based nonprofits to organizations with international reach including the Federal Aviation Administration, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy. He has taught as an adjunct faculty member for ten years in Organization Development and DEI programs at American University and Georgetown University. He holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.), Organization Development (M.S.), and is a Certified Professional Diversity Coach (CPDC). _____________________________________________ Stephen Graves Born in Greenwood, South Carolina to a pair of faith-driven educators, the values of service and lifelong learning were instilled in Stephen Graves from an early age. Tom Foley began 2021 as the new Executive Director of National Disability Institute (NDI).Trained as a tax lawyer and financial planner, Tom has more than 30 years of experience in the disability community. As a person who is blind, he has been an advocate and dedicated his career to partnering with other thought leaders to address the complex drivers of economic inequality and create pathways to employment and financial security for the most vulnerable communities. In addition, Tom has been instrumental in developing and influencing federal and state legislation to encourage employment and increase participation of people with disabilities in employment and wealth-building programs. He most recently held the position of Managing Director at the World Institute on Disability.Tom says: I think financial institutions, educators and banks each have to recognize the disability community as a specific market segment of the population that have been traditionally underserved and have a demonstrated need for access to financial tools and services. Once they make the decision to work with the disability community, they need to partner with organizations who are particularly well-positioned to provide industry technical assistance to reach the disability community and further the financial industry's inclusion goals – like National Disability Institute. For example, NDI reaches two million people per year and has been doing this for 15 years. We are particularly well situated, through our research, policy and practice, to reach this community. In addition, it's important for banks and financial institutions to target people with disabilities through their CRA activities. NDI's Center for Disability-Inclusive Community Development (CDICD) works to improve the usage of the opportunities and resources available under the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). This is really important as millions of dollars, that could help people with disabilities in LMI communities, goes unspent every year. Through NDI's research, we've identified that Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities with disability are the most underserved. How do we change this? Financial institutions, in particular, need to make a concerted effort to work with and support this segment of the community. In addition, we, the disability community, need to be intentional in our own efforts to better address these issues.© 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
