026 How a Pandemic Turned "Preserving Life" Into "Managing Death" feat. Kiana Garcia & Son Lam

You can see it in someone's eyes when they've witnessed outrageous misfortune, and there is a dark side to working in the health care field that is rarely spoken about. This episode features Son Lam @mrdot and Kiana Garcia @kianagrams, two members of the amazing army of Frontline Workers who worked in the COVID ICU through each wave of the pandemic. Like many other health care workers, they witnessed things some of us couldn't even imagine. The stories of Death may be dark, but for those who are fortunate enough to be living, they help us learn more about the value of Life. Much respect to the Frontline Workers who have faced Death so much that they learned to embrace it. “We weren't preserving Life anymore. We were managing Death,” was what Son Lam told me the night that I met him. The conversation that we had that night led to what I call Episode 026 of The Broken Instruments Podcast. Muscle Icon's Dan Mendoza-Conner joins The Broken Instruments Podcast to speak on his story from Athlete to Founder. The perspectives he developed on his journey helped him construct the foundation of Muscle Icon, “the next generation bodybuilding enterprise.” From athletes, to products, and to competitive events, Muscle Icon has become more than a brand. It is a strong Community that stands for the Athlete and the Opportunities that go beyond the Stage. Dan and his team at Muscle Icon work “to give people a way for authentic relationships with athletes, sponsors, and help fans relate to their journey.” It is more than muscle. It is more than a brand. It is more than a show. It was a pleasure to meet up with the Muscle Icon team for this off-site podcast episode! To the Muscle Icon Team, I commend and respect what you stand for and what you do for the individual as well as the Community. It was a pleasure to highlight this, once-considered “underdog” story, and share the message of discipline, hard work, and perseverance. Sabine Shoepke, the 2021 Muscle Icon Inspire Award Winner, was always a bold, hard worker who had accomplished things many of us can only dream of. Her journey consists of leaving home at the tender age of 16, launching multiple businesses, and giving birth to her twins. Beneath all these great things was the underlying challenge and struggle to overcome adversity. With $300 back in 2010, she created and founded Shiny Little Blessings, a boutique of handmade, custom jewelry each with a simple message of encouragement. It has now become a social enterprise, that gives support to children and families who are facing homelessness. Today, Sabine tells her story with grace and pride. She was not always the strong, powerful Lioness that we see on social media. From a sufferer of domestic violence to a Powerhouse of Joy, Sabine says her saving grace was, of course, her children and in recent years, the world of bodybuilding. What a great pleasure it has been to speak with her, and it is my honor to host her on The Broken Instruments Podcast! The Broken Instruments Podcast is streaming on YOUTUBE and ALL AUDIO PLATFORMS. (Recorded back in September 2020) In this episode, Gracie and I (with Amela yelling in the background) open up the difficult topic of losing a loved one. It's rare that she opens up about her experience of losing her Father, but she was so gracious to have me share part of her story on the podcast. With the losses of life in the past year (not to mention the losses throughout the lives of mankind), we felt compelled to talk about what has helped us get through the grieving process. In these hard times, I believe strong people emerge to support those in need. My wife is one of the strong ones. Strength is not only in the forms of forward motion and backward motion. It's sometimes in the form of stillness. One of the many things I've learned from Gracie is that being still and allowing life to BE WHAT IT IS can be one of the strongest things we can do. 002 Storytelling, Controlling the Narrative, & Having Empathy feat. Elcid Carreon

(Recorded back in October of 2020) My older brother (kuya), Elcid has been one of my closest confidants in life. Yes, we have a few differences as siblings do, but I will always respect and honor the man that he is. We can talk for hours about anything, more so, things that ACTUALLY matter in life. He has goals beyond my imagination, and when he accomplishes each one, I will be right next to him every time. In this episode, we dive into the art of storytelling in the form of writing, directing, and producing for the Visual Arts. The natural leader he is brings out the best in everyone, and he gives me many lenses to view the world through. One long-standing question we seek to answer is: How can we have empathy for those who try to control our narrative? (Recorded back in October of 2020) Separated by roughly 10 years and what seems like 2 socio-cultural generations, my sister (Salve Regina aka Avegine) and I have always been able to hold conversations about our perspectives and how they might differ based on the views of her age group and my age group. In this episode we dive into a few topics that she finds herself intrigued to venture into: Psychology, Mental Health, and Performance Mindsets. Naturally, she knows that my perspective as a Mental Health nurse is somewhat unique to society's views on these types of sensitive topics. Avegine, although very reserved and timid most of the time, is one of the most well-grounded young people in my world, and I have learned a lot from her. She definitely has a regular spot on the podcast, and she will be making big moves very soon. Follow her on: IG: @a.carryon13 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brokeninstruments/support
