As a bonus episode, to coincide with Dying Matters Week we bring you an insightful conversation with Dr Tim Wright (GP), and Lucy (Paediatric Sister), members of Rachel's family who both work in the local children's hospice. This beautiful, tender and raw conversation has the reality of both sides of the bed. Providing care for families of children who have life-limiting conditions and at end of life, as well as loving someone with a life-limiting condition. Dying Matters is a campaign run by the charity, Hospice UK. Hospice UK work with organisations, decision makers and the public to make things better for people who are dying or grieving. The hardest conversations are often the most important and here we talk about some of the jargon you might come across, having a take-away at a hospice and the ‘brutiful' (beautiful and brutal) reality of fighting for a good death. The tech wasn't to the standard we would typically aim for but the conversation was real and raw. In this special episode of the Skies we're Under we continue to explore our theme of community, and question what happens when inclusivity is eroded, either within our existing communities, or within the disability community itself. To discuss this important subject, Rachel is joined by the wonderful Ramandeep Kaur. Ramandeep reflects on her own experiences within her ethnic community, how that changed when her son with Down Syndrome was born without the fanfare she had come to expect. Rachel and Ramandeep cover it all, what does inclusivity actually look like, where do you go when you lose connection with community, what do you do when you don't see people ‘like your family' in the places that you go to for connection and support.  It's full of reflection, and hope, and humour. There is also the usual chat from Sarah and Lucy, who are both adamant that all aspects of motherhood should be celebrated. You can find out more about Ramandeep at her website. Join Rachel for Episode 4 of The Skies We're Under podcast, this week we've swapped out two Mum's in exchange for two Dads (Brendan Jones and Tim Wright)  - to get a different perspective on life as a parent of a disabled child.  Whilst they cover many well trodden paths: the pain that can come with comparison, rubbish message delivery and the clanger of ‘special children get special parents' they illustrate a slightly different story.  Brendan and Tim focus on the difficulties of adjusting the life you had imagined, to the life you have whilst dealing with the traditional roles that Fathers often (but not always) fulfil. From focussing on practical support, to ‘making up' on the weekends, they consider the ways that stereotypically male ways of coping, can both help, and hinder. There is plenty of reflection on finding the right communities of support around us, including the fantastic charity 'Unique', to how to talk to those who ‘get it' and those who don't, and just how sometimes you need to just get away from it all.
