I was compensated by Med-IQ through an educational grant from Sanofi to discuss the realities of diabetes as a chronic disease. All opinions are my own. Med-IQ is conducting an anonymous survey and would appreciate your input. The survey, which includes additional education on this topic, will take less than 15 minutes to complete. Survey responses are shared only in aggregate. Your responses to these survey questions will provide Med-IQ with important information about your experiences with diabetes and your care team, which will help us develop future educational initiatives. Once you've completed the survey, you will have the option of providing your email address to be entered into a drawing administered by SOMA Strategies to win 1 of 10 $100 VISA gift cards. If you choose to enter, your email address will be used only to randomly draw the winners and notify them of their prize and to send a follow-up survey as part of this same initiative. Have you ever been concerned you were misdiagnosed with T2D? Then this is an episode for you! It kicks off a 2-part series on LADA, a type of diabetes that's often misdiagnosed as T2D. This week you'll hear from medical expert and physician, Dr Leonard Sander's about the medical pieces of LADA. Join me next week to listen into someone's personal story of moving from a T2D diagnosis to a LADA diagnosis.About Dr Sanders: Dr. Sanders received his medical doctorate at the University of California in San Francisco. He has more than 45 years of direct patient care, administration, teaching, and research in medicine and is formally trained and certified in several disciplines. These disciplines include Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Nephrology, Hypertension, Lipidology, Diabetes Education, and Advanced Diabetes Management. Currently, Dr. Sanders is the Medical Director of Diabetes Care at Montage Medical Group in Monterey, California. He also is the immediate past Chair of the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), previously known as the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Dr. Sanders has been formally teaching and motivating patients with diabetes to improve their overall health for over 40 years. Before his current position in Monterey, he developed and directed for ten years the first Diabetes Care Program for the Pima Indians at Gila River Health Care in Arizona. Dr. Sanders developed the program based on the Chronic Care Model and the Social Determinants of Health. The program received NCQA Diabetes Recognition and continues actively today. Dr. Sanders’ general approach to patient care is to support the patient and family to be the primary managers of their health care. His goal in diabetes care is to impart sufficient knowledge, education, and support to patients and their families to allow them to feel empowered and self-determined to effectively self-manage their diabetes. This approach promotes cultural sensitivity and considers patient social determinants of health. He and his diabetes support team encourage each patient with diabetes to feel empowered to perform 10 Self-Care Behaviors that improve their ABCS and reduce or prevent Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). ABCS is an abbreviation for A1c, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Smoking. These concepts are review daily with each of his patient that have diabetes. This is going to be a seasonal podcast!
