These qualities allow music to be applied to improving physical, emotional, and mental well-being. In this episode, we invite you to join us as we explore the science of music therapy. We hear from five music therapists working in various aspects of the field: Dr. Michael Thaut, Canada Research Chair in Music and Health Sciences; Dr. SarahRose Black, Music Therapist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Kensington Health; Priya Shah, Music Therapist at Journey Home Hospice, Fudger House, and the Music Therapy Centre; Dr. Corene Hurt-Thaut, Assistant Professor of Music and Health Sciences at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and Program Director of the Academy of Neurological Music Therapy; and Bernice Chu, Neurologic Music Therapy Fellow in the United Kingdom at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. We hope this episode opens your ears and heart to the role of music in health and wellbeing, and inspires you to listen and explore the power of music. Until next time, keep it raw! WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: March 10, 2016 Featuring: Mark Jarrett, MD, MBA, MS, Chief Quality Offer and Senior Vice President, Northwell Health Fran Ganz-Lord, MD, FACP, Director of Ambulatory Quality & Medical Director, Northwell Health Premium IPA Network and Northwell ACO Ann Lewis, CEO, CareSouth Carolina Tejal Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, President and CEO, National Patient Safety Foundation, Lucian Leape Institute, Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety Jennifer Lenoci-Edwards, RN, MPH, CPPS, Director, Patient Safety, IHI What comes to mind when you think about patient safety in the ambulatory setting? Infection rates? Probably not. The issues are of course quite different in outpatient care, and that's one reason it's not always obvious to practitioners and staff which of their many daily activities might inadvertently contribute to patient harm. Activities such as failing to follow up on patient referrals, or to communicate test results. Or getting frustrated with the EHR and creating workarounds. IHI's patient safety leads have been doing a lot of thinking about the need for a new safety framework suited to ambulatory care in order to better highlight the unique fault lines and improvement priorities for this setting. Components of this framework and how they’re being tested and applied, as well as real-world examples from Northwell Health and CareSouth Carolina, are explored on this WIHI.

intrusive passing of the tax provision of Obama's healthcare plan. This has created a fissure in the Constitution, a horrible outcome that opens a door to the government violating our civil liberties. Jonathan breaks down the consequences of the violations, such as our liberty to choose and right to privacy in the interest of a government mandate that only benefits the government. Moving on to TSA, Jonathan divulges the massive problems with this act. “The TSA is an institution that is riddled with corruption and riddled with abuse,” he explains. The elderly, pregnant women, infants and disabled individuals with no record of criminal activity are being subjected to humiliating and highly intrusive searches all over the U.S. Jonathan defines the difference in tactics from a defensive position versus an offensive position, with the latter producing far better results. He advocates training the citizenry to be more aware of suspicious behavior and to better defend themselves. Jonathan gives an update on the work against the FDA and the First Amendment. Jonathan W. Emord is one of the nation's leading free speech attorneys. He has defeated the Food and Drug Administration a remarkable eight times in federal court, more times than any other attorney in American history, earning him the title, “FDA Dragon Slayer.” He is the 2007 recipient of the Cancer Control Society's Humanitarian Award for “winning and preserving our great civil rights to life, to liberty, and to health freedoms.” He is the only non-scientist ever appointed to the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists and serves as that organization's Vice Chair. In 2010, he became the first person awarded the title “Honorary Nutrition Specialist” by the CBNS. Congressman Ron Paul says “[a]ll freedom-loving Americans are in debt to Jonathan Emord for his courtroom [victories]” and calls him a “hero of the health freedom revolution.” Formerly an attorney in the Reagan Administration's Federal Communications Commission, Emord has practiced constitutional and administrative law in Washington, D.C. for the past twenty-five years. He has been a Guest Lecturer, Georgetown University, Department of Biochemistry, Course in Nutrition. Jason Hartman and prior guest, Jonathan Emord, get together once again to talk about current issues affecting our rights, beginning with the damaging and highly intrusive passing of the tax provision of Obama's healthcare plan. Jonathan gives an update on the work against the FDA and the First Amendment.Jonathan W.
Since 2005, the American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists have collaborated on a State Recognition Operational Plan. The primary purpose of this Plan is to get music therapy and our MT-BC credential recognized by individual states so that citizens can more easily access our services. The AMTA Government Relations staff and CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provide guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as they work towards state recognition. To date, their work has resulted in 35 active state task forces, 2 licensure bills passed in 2011, and an estimated 10 bills being filed in 2012 that seek to create either a music therapy registry or license for music therapy. This month, our focus is on YOU and on getting you excited about advocacy. So my guests this week will be Judy Simpson, Dena Register, and Kimberly Sena Moore from the State Recognition Operational Plan to talk about Music Therapy Advocacy and how you can get involved!
