Could hidden blood sugar problems be affecting energy, belly fat, sleep, and long-term health long before a doctor ever warns about them? Many men over 50 pay attention to cholesterol, blood pressure, and annual lab work. Far fewer understand what is happening with their blood sugar throughout the day or how it may be contributing to insulin resistance, weight gain, brain fog, and declining metabolic health.Karen Kennedy, author of the new book, Hack Your Blood Sugar, explains how a continuous glucose monitor can provide real-time feedback that helps men better understand how food, stress, sleep, and exercise affect their bodies. She also shares practical ways to use a CGM device without becoming obsessed with the numbers. What listeners will discover:Why a glucose monitoring device can reveal health patterns that traditional blood tests often missHow simple habits like meal timing and post-dinner walks can help lower blood sugarWhy stress and poor sleep may be driving blood sugar problems even when diet looks healthyListen for a practical framework that can help create more clarity, better decisions, and stronger health after 50.If you find this episode helpful, please subscribe and share it with friends and family.NEW FOR 2026: Click here to get my weekly Unstoppable After 50 Playbook
Dr. Corey Schuler, PhD(c), FNP, DC, CNS, and director of medical affairs at Allergy Research Group, details his paper “Energy Allocation Resilience and Endocrine Integration” in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. He introduces the Energy Allocation System (EAS), which emphasizes how the body allocates energy—not just produces it—and links many symptoms to impaired bioenergetics and resilience. They discuss mitochondria as energy generators and cellular signaling hubs, the integrated stress response and endocrine coordination (HPA axis, thyroid, gonads), and mitohormesis/eustress (exercise, fasting, heat/cold, circadian “zeitgebers”). Schuler explains nuanced testing for fatigue (diurnal cortisol, CGM patterns, thyroid markers including T3/reverse T3) and a case of a perimenopausal woman where oral contraceptives and cortisol dysregulation affected glucose patterns. They cover mitochondrial support (removing obstacles like pollutants/antibiotics, triglycerides, carnitine, dietary fats, micronutrients) and pacing/sequencing lifestyle interventions.
Darius Sharpe has spent over two decades watching the same patients cycle through emergency rooms with the same conditions, the same medications, and the same unaddressed root cause. As a paramedic-turned-ER nurse, he started asking a question nobody around him wanted to answer: why are we treating the result instead of the cause? What followed was years of self-experimentation — continuous glucose monitors, serial lab draws, coronary imaging — on a man who, by every outward measure, looked like a picture of health. What he found in his own bloodwork challenged assumptions held across every nutritional camp.BIG IDEA: As long as diabetes exists, you will have heart disease — no matter how low you drive your LDL.Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. This episode is about early data of my personal continous glucose monitor. These sensors can be purchased without a prescription and are used to monitor the glucose in the interstitial fluid. Translated there is a mild delay from the blood to the cell fluids where the glucose is monitored and then uploaded to an App on your smartphone. Diabetes and glucose intolerance are the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Often, people assume that their if glucose is normal fasting, then they are ok. The problem is that insulin resistence occurs much sooner and still carries the risk of chronic insulin elevations. Lifestyle changes can be used to prevent frank diabetes or help one achieve remission. Today I will share with you some of my readings. This week, Emily and Perry discuss continuous glucose monitors -- a gamechanger for diabetics and just kind of an overabundance of information for everyone else. What does glucose do to the body and what's the value of tracking it, along with everything we eat? Should we be using this data to regulate our intake? And what are the risks of knowing so much? Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Paul Kolodzik of Metabolic MD.
How Continuous Glucose Monitors Can Optimize Metabolic Health—and Where GLP-1 Drugs Fit: Emergency physician-turned-preventive/metabolic medicine specialist Dr. Paul Kolodzik of Metabolic MD reveals how continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are a tool not only for diabetics but also for non-diabetics and pre-diabetics to personalize diet, sleep, and exercise by seeing real-time glucose patterns instead of relying on fingersticks or A1c averages. Kolodzik describes CGM use in his clinic (two-week diagnostic wear, then therapeutic guidance), highlights insulin resistance, fasting insulin testing, glucose variability, and the role of low-carb eating, intermittent fasting, and strength training to improve metabolic syndrome, triglycerides, and fatty liver. They discuss CGM sourcing/cost, device mechanics and accuracy, possible future noninvasive wearables, and GLP-1/GIP weight-loss drugs, emphasizing supervised, limited-dose use with protein and lifestyle changes to avoid muscle loss and weight regain. A free PDF of Kolodzik's book is offered HERE.

Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Bret Scher, medical director of the Coalition for Metabolic Health.
Dr. Bret Scher, medical director of the Coalition for Metabolic Health, discusses making metabolic health the foundation of medicine amid rising obesity and type 2 diabetes and reports that 93% of Americans have suboptimal metabolic health. Scher defines metabolic health using markers including glucose, insulin, triglycerides, HDL, blood pressure, and waist size, and cites evidence linking insulin resistance to heart disease, stroke, cancer, psychiatric illness, and other complications. They discuss simple self- and lab-assessments (waist-to-height ratio, fasting insulin with glucose/HOMA-IR, triglyceride-to-HDL ratio, CGMs). Scher critiques the Eat Lancet report for assuming one optimal diet, reliance on low-quality nutrition epidemiology, potential nutrient shortfalls, and environmental oversimplification, while supporting newer dietary guidelines that allow lower-carb approaches. Part two covers contradictory nutrition studies, distinctions between low-carb and ketogenic diets, emerging “metabolic psychiatry” and ketogenic therapy for mental illness and cognitive decline, limits and rebound risks of GLP-1 drugs, and Coalition efforts to improve school food and influence policy.
Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. Today, we're diving into a range of topics that illustrate the rapidly changing landscape of our industry. We'll discuss everything from vaccine expansions to regulatory challenges, highlighting both the breakthroughs and hurdles faced by companies worldwide.Kicking off with GSK's recent achievement, their respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, Arexvy, has gained FDA approval for adults aged 18 to 49 at increased risk of lower respiratory tract disease. This marks a significant milestone not only for GSK but also in the competitive RSV vaccine market where Pfizer and Moderna have already made their mark. This development underscores the industry's ongoing commitment to preventing RSV-related complications, reflecting the fierce competition driving innovation in vaccine development. In parallel, Gilead Sciences is making strides with its HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis medication, Yetztugo. The emphasis here is on how early production strategies can set a medication up for success by ensuring accessibility. This focus on manufacturing highlights a broader trend where efficient production methods are key to delivering timely healthcare solutions, underscoring the integral role manufacturing plays in modern drug development.Legend Biotech is navigating the competitive dynamics of the CAR-T therapy market with its treatment, Carvykti, despite facing competition from Johnson & Johnson's bispecific antibody Tecvayli. This scenario highlights strategic partnerships and market positioning challenges within oncology treatments, illuminating the complex landscape companies must navigate to succeed. On the regulatory front, Hyloris Pharmaceuticals encountered a setback when the FDA issued a Complete Response Letter due to manufacturing issues with its antiviral valacyclovir oral suspension. This incident serves as a reminder of the stringent manufacturing standards regulatory bodies demand and the essential nature of compliance in successful drug development. In an exciting advancement out of China, Neuracle Technology has developed the country's first brain-computer interface implant for paralyzed patients. This pioneering neurotechnology involves implanted EEG electrodes connected to a robotic glove capable of grasping objects. Such innovations highlight China's increasing role in cutting-edge medical technology development and represent a significant leap forward in rehabilitation for patients with severe disabilities. However, not all news is positive. Immutep faced an unexpected phase 3 failure with its LAG-3 candidate, which surprised analysts and led to a stock decline. These outcomes underscore the inherent risks in drug development and stress the importance of rigorous clinical evaluation to ensure both efficacy and safety.Shifting focus to diabetes management, companies like Insulet, Abbott, and Dexcom are expanding their efforts toward personalized care through continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps. These advancements are part of an ongoing trend toward personalized diabetes management tools aimed at improving glucose control for patients.Meanwhile, Simtra Biopharma Solutions received an FDA warning due to contamination issues at one of its production facilities. This serves as a stark reminder of how crucial it is to maintain high-quality standards in drug manufacturing processes to avoid disruptions and ensure patient safety.Strategically speaking, we see notable shifts as companies like Eli Lilly invest in Asia and Pfizer enters obesity treatment markets through strategic partnerships. Today, we delve into a series of significant advancements and strategic shifts currently shaping the landscape of these industries. To start, let's discuss a remarkable development in therapeutic treatments. UCB's Bimzelx has demonstrated superior efficacy over AbbVie's Skyrizi in treating psoriatic arthritis, as revealed by a head-to-head phase 3b clinical trial. This finding not only extends UCB's winning streak in psoriasis treatment but also positions Bimzelx as a competitive alternative in the immunology sector. The implications of this are profound, potentially influencing prescribing patterns and improving patient outcomes by offering an effective alternative for those with psoriatic conditions. In manufacturing news, Eli Lilly is making waves with its substantial $3 billion investment aimed at enhancing the global supply chain for Orforglipron, their oral GLP-1 receptor agonist. This move highlights a growing demand for GLP-1 therapies, crucial for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity. The strategic focus on oral therapies reflects a broader industry trend towards improving patient compliance compared to injectable alternatives, underscoring the importance of such innovative treatments in addressing widespread health issues. Additionally, Eli Lilly's commitment to investing $500 million into South Korea's biopharmaceutical sector signals the country's rising status as a hub for biopharmaceutical innovation and development, likely fostering collaborations and expediting novel therapeutics' development.Economically, there's compelling evidence of the impact public funding has on scientific advancement. A recent report by United for Medical Research revealed that National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants generated $94.15 billion in economic activity in 2025, supporting nearly 391,000 jobs. This underscores the dual role of public funding in advancing biomedical research and stimulating economic growth. On the regulatory front, Sandoz is making a strategic move to establish a standalone unit dedicated to biosimilars. As we enter what Sandoz describes as a 'golden decade' of patent expirations, this realignment reflects anticipation of expansion opportunities within the biosimilars market. Such preparations suggest increased competition and potentially more affordable biologic therapy options as major drugs lose patent protection.Technological advancements are further shaping industry operations. BD's partnership with Sinteco to automate pharmacy logistics in Europe is part of a broader push to integrate robotics into healthcare processes. This aligns with digital transformation trends across the sector aimed at improving efficiency and reducing human error. Meanwhile, Medtronic's former diabetes division Minimed has achieved European approval for its 780G insulin pump system, which integrates with Abbott's continuous glucose monitor (CGM). This approval is noteworthy for enhancing diabetes management through automation of insulin delivery based on real-time glucose monitoring, representing a significant step forward in closed-loop systems.A notable technological initiative comes from ARPA-H with their program focused on developing wearable biosensors under the Delphi initiative. These sensors aim to enhance personal health monitoring capabilities across various devices, aligning with trends towards personalized medicine and digital health technologies.Despite these positive strides, challenges persist. The closure of F5 Therapeutics highlights early-stage biotech struggles amid competitive pressures. Regulatory setbacks also continue to pose challenges; Novo Nordisk recently received an FDA warning letter following inspection issues at its U.S. headquarters.Collectively, these trends reflect an industry resiliently pursuSupport the show

Is obesity really just about eating too much — or is something deeper driving it? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Yasmine Elamir to unpack the concept of “diabesity” — the intersection of insulin resistance, blood sugar regulation, and chronic overeating. We explore how glucose swings influence hunger, why many people struggling with weight may have underlying insulin resistance, and how muscle, sleep, and diet can improve metabolic health over time. We also take a thoughtful look at GLP-1 medications, why some patients stall on them, and the biggest mistakes people make when relying on medication without addressing behavior and lifestyle. Dr. Elamir explains how to interpret glucose patterns, determine carb tolerance, and break emotional eating cycles using practical strategies. If you want a deeper understanding of the biology and behavior behind modern obesity, this episode delivers a clear, evidence-based perspective. Continuous Glucose Monitors or CGM's have been revolutionary for those living with diabetes. Dr. Gundry dives into these new wearable healthcare devices to figure out if everyone should be using them. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are small devices that are inserted just under the skin — usually on the back of the arm — to measure glucose levels. To date, they've been widely used by those with prediabetes or diabetes. However, they are now being embraced by a broader audience of health-minded individuals who are curious about the insights they can gather from them because of the far-reaching effects that glucose levels have on health. This technology is becoming more accessible to the general consumer and in this episode, Cher Pastore, RD, joins us to speak about the options available, how they work and what they measure, and the ways the data can be used to improve health.
