Welcome to season 5 of Arkansas A.W.A.R.E.!This podcast segment discusses the Motivational Interviewing training offered by the Arkansas AWARE project. Motivational interviewing is a collaborative communication style used to help individuals find their own internal motivation for change, rather than giving them directives. The presenters demonstrate an example roleplay using Motivational Interviewing techniques with a teenager experiencing difficulties with friendships. The key aspects highlighted are: allowing the individual to lead the conversation and identify their own solutions, reflecting back what is heard to show understanding, and guiding the individual towards action steps they feel ready to take. The presenters emphasize that Motivational Interviewing is a useful skill for educators, counselors, and others working with youth to help build their independence and autonomy.Join Betsy Kindall and Nicole Fairchild as they discuss issues related to mental health in education. Welcome to season 5 of Arkansas A.W.A.R.E.!In this episode we discuss the importance of free play and opportunities for unstructured time for students. This is part of our continuted disucssion on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Key points include:The Valley Springs school district was a 2019-2023 pilot site for the Arkansas AWARE project and has implemented initiatives like a monthly "flex day" and outdoor spaces for students to play and engage in activities. These efforts aim to provide students with more opportunities for free play, risk-taking, and social interaction outside of structured classroom time.School administrators and students report benefits such as improved student wellbeing, reduced behavioral issues, and better ability to focus on schoolwork after breaks.Implementing these types of programs takes time and a multi-year effort, but can have a meaningful impact on students.Thank you to Dr. Kyle Mallett - Superintendent, Angie Bogle - High School Principal, and Scarlett Williams - High School Counselor, and Jared and Allie - High School Juniors.Join Betsy Kindall and Nicole Fairchild as they discuss issues related to mental health in education. Tier 2 behavior interventions are an area of growth for most of our schools. We have Tier 1, we have SBMH for Tier 3… but what can we do in-between there? Today we walk through several Tier 2 interventions and how it could be possible to “check the box” and do the intervention but get NO WHERE. We discuss the ways these interventions can go wrong and what the goals really are. There is more magic in how we are than in what we do. Read that again. In Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown talks about “Places We Go When We Feel Wronged.” In those places we might feel things like anger, disgust, dehumanization, self-righteousness and even contempt. Contempt, my friends, is one of Gottman's Four Horsemen. The Four Horsemen are indicators of a corroding relationship. The other three are Criticism, Defensiveness and Stonewalling. Yikes. Atlas of the Heart Continued: ShameBrene says, “Shame thrives on secrecy, silence, and judgment. [However, when] we reach out, share our shame experiences with someone who responds with empathy, [then] shame dissipates.” - Atlas of the Heart, Brene Brown. Today we talk about the impact of shame in the classroom. In teacher student relationships there is a power differential. Are we expecting students to dissipate their own shame? Do you have a story of a relationship starting in shame and ending in empathy? Think about it. Stacy says, “I think a lot of us spend our whole lifetimes finding that person that says, I see you for who you are and I love you despite and with everything you bring.” What do you think?Let's be the kinds of people who dissipate shame in our relationships, in our hallways, buildings and classrooms!Welcome to season 4 of Arkansas A.W.A.R.E.!Join Betsy Kindall, Nicole Fairchild, and Stacy Moore as they discuss issues related to mental health in education. Using Typical Counseling SkillsTherapists use basic skills that we generalize in society in many ways. We might call them active listening skills, conflict resolution, communication skills, empathy skills, etc. It's true that all of these skills are things counselors do – but getting good at them does not make you a counselor! It makes you a better human. Today we talk about how the trainings we do are designed help to improve these skills in our educators. We also discuss the value of Mental Health First Aid trainings and how they teach, and allow you to practice, good basic skills that prepare you to intervene in a mental health challenge or crisis.
