On a misty morning in the fall of 1985, a small group of Haida people blockaded a muddy dirt road on Lyell Island, demanding that the government work with Indigenous people to find a way to protect the land and the future. The Stand is a riveting feature documentary drawn from more than a hundred hours of archival footage from that first blockade and the months that followed. Christopher Auchter, director of the award-winning documentary Now Is The Time, recreates the critical moment when the Haida Nation took a stand to protect their land. The Stand is showing this month in Vancouver and at other locations around BC. We spoke with Christopher Auchter in September last year.

Welcome to season 5 of Arkansas A.W.A.R.E.!This podcast segment discusses the Motivational Interviewing training offered by the Arkansas AWARE project. Motivational interviewing is a collaborative communication style used to help individuals find their own internal motivation for change, rather than giving them directives. The presenters demonstrate an example roleplay using Motivational Interviewing techniques with a teenager experiencing difficulties with friendships. The key aspects highlighted are:  allowing the individual to lead the conversation and identify their own solutions, reflecting back what is heard to show understanding, and guiding the individual towards action steps they feel ready to take. The presenters emphasize that Motivational Interviewing is a useful skill for educators, counselors, and others working with youth to help build their independence and autonomy.Join Betsy Kindall and Nicole Fairchild as they discuss issues related to mental health in education.
