Where do we get ideas about the lives we want? And, what do we do - and fail to do - about actually getting them? In The Life You Want Adam Phillips uses psychoanalytic and literary approaches to show that we are obsessed by the idea of our lives being ones we want and enjoy rather than merely endure, tolerate or make the most of. Through a series of interlinked essays, Phillips explores the difficulties we have around the whole idea of enjoying - and fashioning - our lives in cultures that insistently promote enjoyment while making it very difficult for so many people. Exploring the personal and political overlap in the issue of our lives, The Life You Want (FSG, 2026) is a profound examination of our ambivalence about enjoyment, and indeed, wanting. Adam Phillips, formerly a principal child psychotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital, London, is a practicing psychoanalyst and a visiting professor in the English department at the University of York. He is the author of numerous works of psychoanalysis and literary criticism, including Missing Out, Unforbidden Pleasures, In Writing, Attention Seeking, On Wanting to Change, On Getting Better, and On Giving Up. He is also the general editor of the Penguin Modern Classics Freud translations and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Many people living with depression aren't trying to “be happy.” They're just trying to make it to tomorrow. In this deeply honest episode of Normalize The Conversation, Francesca Reicherter sits down with therapist and author Katie (You're On Fire, It's Fine) to talk openly about suicidality, self-harm, emotional sensitivity, and what it actually means to live with depression — not just recover from it. This conversation explores the emotional weight of birthdays and holidays, the pressure to look okay, and the reality that someone can laugh, function, and still be struggling to stay alive.Katie shares from both lived experience and professional insight, explaining how self-harm can become a survival strategy when emotions feel overwhelming — not an attention-seeking behavior. Together, they unpack why invalidating responses like “be positive,” “get over it,” or “you seem fine” can deepen shame and isolation, even when they're well-intentioned.This episode also speaks directly to parents and loved ones. Katie explains why fear often drives reactive responses, how shame shows up in families, and what supportive language actually looks like when someone is suicidal or self-harming. You'll learn why asking “What do you need right now?” can be more powerful than trying to fix the pain — and how learning someone's emotional language can change the entire relationship.Key topics include:What chronic suicidality really feels likeWhy depression isn't just sadnessHow self-harm functions as emotional regulationEmotional validation vs. toxic positivitySupporting loved ones without escalating crisisLiving a life worth living with depressionThis episode is for you if you've ever felt misunderstood, “too emotional,” or exhausted by trying to appear okay — or if you love someone who is struggling and don't know how to help.

School Behaviour Secrets with Simon Currigan and Emma Shackleton
Why do so many sensible school strategies fail, even when staff are trying their best?In this episode, you'll learn why attention-seeking behaviour is often a misleading label - and why two pupils can show very similar behaviour for completely different reasons.Using the PAIN framework, you'll discover how to look beneath the surface, identify the hidden drivers behind a child's behaviour, and choose responses that actually match their needs. You'll also learn why adult attention can change behaviour in the short term, but won't solve the problem on its own unless you understand what that attention is doing for the child in the first place. If you work in a school and want a more thoughtful, SEMH-first way to understand behaviour, this episode will help you think more clearly about your students' needs and how to support them.Important links:Get our FREE SEND Behaviour Handbook: https://beaconschoolsupport.co.uk/send-handbookDownload other FREE behaviour resources for use in school: https://beaconschoolsupport.co.uk/resources.phpHeadteachers and deputies: Join our in-person events in Coventy and DudleyWhere you'll learn practical ways to equip your team to handle SEMH challenges with confidence - so you can move from firefighting to a calm, consistent whole-school approach. Genocidal rhetoric is being defended in some arenas as a hard-nosed negotiating tactic but in others, it carries immediate consequences. So where is the line drawn? Earlier this week, Donald Trump sparked global backlash after warning that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran failed to meet U.S. demands - language widely condemned by critics as a threat of mass civilian destruction. Kanye West has now been barred from entering the United Kingdom ahead of the Wireless Festival, with the government ruling his presence “not conducive to the public good” following his past praise of Hitler. The decision ultimately led to the festival's cancellation. The UK has the legal right to deny entry but was it the right call? Where should governments draw the line between rhetoric, responsibility, and consequence? Piers Morgan is joined by Israel author and commentator Hen Mazzig, host of The Winston Marshall Show and 'cancelled' musician, Winston Marshall and host of Louder With Crowder, Steven Crowder. It's spring and the farmers are out in force prepping their fields and planting seeds with the hope and anticipation of a bountiful harvest. There's a new trend among our kids that's all about farming, but not in the way our professional farmers are now farming here. No, our kids are involved in what's called “aura farming.” In the teenage world, someone who has aura is someone who has the same kind of glowing presence as the top social media influencers, beloved celebrities, and people who ooze coolness. Aura Farming is the term used to describe the act of doing things online to boost your cool factor in the eyes of the world that's watching you on social media. In essence, you're farming and fishing for the social capital of likes, positive comments, and a growing number of followers. Parents, this is a troubling trend as our kids are going to look for love and attention in all the wrong places. Lead them to find their identity, purpose, and value in Jesus Christ and not in the eyes of others.
Send a textYour kid isn't trying to ruin your day, they're trying to find you. We unpack a parenting trap that shows up in every home: calling a child “attention seeking” and missing the deeper need for relationship, attachment, and felt safety. We tell a few honest stories about the ridiculous things kids do to get a reaction, then we zoom in on what's happening under the surface. When a child interrupts your phone call, acts goofy at the worst time, or melts down after you walk in the door, it can be a bid for connection that clashes with your stress and burnout. Using a brain-based parenting lens, we talk about why those moments trigger adults, how kids pick up on our posture and energy, and why a quick, connected response often prevents bigger behavior later. We also get practical about what connection seeking looks like at different ages, from toddlers who want constant closeness to teens who act aloof while still craving reassurance. We share simple scripts, the “love tank” idea, and why being “annoyingly reassuring” can protect adolescents from chasing connection in riskier places. If you care about child behavior, trauma-informed parenting, and building a home where kids feel seen, this conversation will give you tools you can use today..Contact:podcasts@calfarley.org To Donate: https://secure.calfarley.org/site/Donation2?3358.donation=form1&df_id=3358&mfc_pref=TTo Apply:https://apply.workable.com/cal-farleys-boys-ranch/j/25E1226091/For More Information about Cal Farley's Boys Ranch:https://www.calfarley.org/Music:"Shine" -NewsboysCCS License No. 9402

New Orleans has a way of blurring the line between celebration and something far older. On a night meant for music, noise, and escape, one woman stepped into a familiar place expecting nothing more than a quick break from the crowd. Instead, she walked out questioning whether she'd crossed into something unseen—and whether it had noticed her first. What happened inside that restroom wasn't loud or theatrical. It was sudden. Physical. Impossible to ignore. And it left behind more questions than answers—questions that followed her long after she left the building. When she eventually returned to the same club, the space felt different. Details stood out that hadn't before. The atmosphere carried weight. And the memory of that moment refused to stay buried. Was it coincidence? Imagination? Or something in that room still waiting to be acknowledged? #RealGhostStories #NewOrleansHaunting #TrueParanormal #HauntedPlaces #UnexplainedEncounters #GhostStoriesPodcast #ParanormalExperience #SomethingFollowedMe #TrueGhostStory #CreepyEncounters Love real ghost stories? Einstein was called “slow” at school, J. K. Rowling collected a dozen rejections, and Walt Disney was once fired for “lacking imagination.” We love stories of perseverance—but what's the cost of never letting go? In this conversation, psychoanalyst Adam Phillips argues that our obsession with endurance can have hidden, corrosive effects. He invites us to consider giving up not as failure, but as a creative act: a way to revise who we are, resist the tyranny of completion, and make room for lives that fit.Adam Phillips is a leading British psychoanalyst and acclaimed essayist, celebrated for bringing psychoanalytic ideas into everyday life with clarity and wit. He is the author of more than twenty books, including On Kissing, Tickling, and Being Bored, Darwin's Worms, Going Sane, On Balance, Attention Seeking, and On Wanting to Change. In this episode, I answer a unique and surprisingly common question from Zoe in Texas: what do you do when a child in CCPT is consistently farting in session—and seems to be doing it on purpose? We unpack how repetitive, attention-seeking behaviors like this often reflect deeper needs for control, power, and emotional regulation, especially in children with adoption histories or on the autism spectrum. I walk through why these behaviors don't automatically warrant a limit, how neutrality and reflective responding can actually reduce the behavior over time, and when a safety- or property-related limit might be appropriate. I also explore how even seemingly silly or irritating patterns in the playroom reveal important themes in a child's process—and why unconditional acceptance and patience are essential as the child moves toward self-regulation and growth. We're all anxious, and none of us can pay attention. We don't read long books anymore; our kids don't read at all. When we watch TV, we scroll at the same time. And we absolutely cannot be alone with ourselves. These are the symptoms of a modern malaise that is everywhere diagnosed but rarely treated with the dire seriousness it deserves: an epochal sickness that is fundamentally changing the way we relate to each other and to our own minds. What would it take to reclaim control? Chris Hayes — journalist, author, and host of MSNBC's All In — joins to discuss his new book The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource. Together, Chris and the boys theorize how attention replaced information as the defining commodity of modern life. Along the way, we discuss our own struggles with social media addiction, prayer as an ancient technology for organizing attention, the evolutionary origins of attention-seeking, Donald Trump as the "public figure par excellence" of the attention age, and how to fight back against the corporate takeover of our minds. Toward the end, Chris explains how he's navigating hosting his cable show amid another bewildering Trump era, which seems designed to divide and fragment our attention.Further Reading: Chris Hayes, The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource, (2025)Simone Weil, Gravity and Grace, (1952)Adam Phillips, Attention Seeking, (2022)Karl Marx, Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, (1844)Kyle Chayka, FIlterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, (2024)Shoshana Zuboff, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power, (2019)Daniel Immerwahr, "What if the Attention Crisis Is All a Distraction?" Imagine your child struggling to walk, falling down constantly at home, but miraculously having perfect coordination in public. You wouldn't assume they were just stumbling for attention, right? You'd know they genuinely needed help building that physical skill. Well, the same is true for emotional skills like regulation and distress tolerance. Meltdown behaviors at home (hitting, kicking, screaming, refusal, shutting down) are a sign of lagging abilities, not a manipulative bid for attention. Understand attention seeking: its causes, impacts, and solutions. For many, attention seeking begins with a constant need for approval and validation from others. Individuals often seek reassurance from peers, family, or authority figures, craving recognition and approval that they feel is missing from within.Such behavior can manifest in various ways. Some people may overtly seek attention through their looks, status, or achievements, while others might engage in more subtle forms, such as people-pleasing or overworking to gain praise. Regardless of how it presents, the core issue is a disconnection from one's true self. With awareness and effort, it is possible to overcome attention seeking behaviour. By understanding its roots and embracing our inherent worth, we can live more authentically and find fulfilment from within. With your hosts, David James Lees (ordained Taoist monk, emotional and spiritual health teacher) and Alexandra Lees (mindset and business coach).Discover our online consultations, events and shop: https://www.wuweiwisdom.comOther related teachings on our YouTube channel that will help you:Why Do I Seek Approval & Validation From Others? https://youtu.be/uACgIJGrLPg?si=0_PQ1RnycY8QeCZ0How to Stop People Pleasing https://youtu.be/SkokB7JzzbI?si=A5tnneBcI9V1H-ciHow to Stop Giving Your Power to Others https://youtu.be/rxZFelCBzsY?si=da4jpqq_GdiiaCvtIs there a question you'd like answered on the show? A caller quite bluntly describes his feelings about the Kelce brothers.
As children, our sense of worthiness hinges on the approval, attention, validation, and protection of others. When we do not receive the consistent, maternal warmth every child needs to develop the psychological sense that we are enough, we matter, and that we are good, and acceptable even when we make a mistake or do not always behave as our parents prefer, this mystical connection to the self is fractured. In this space, our survival brain and even the root chakra, operate from a place of survival. Rather than live from our hearts, embracing ourselves as works in progress, without self loathing and internal self-abuse, we develop hypervigilance codependency traits and are soaked in insecure attachment issues. All these effects are normal, considering being raised to feel alone, invisible, abandoned, and detached from the authentic self. On the road to personal development, spiritual healing, and living an authentic life, all serious truth seekers find themselves questioning the thoughts, emotions, patterns, and behaviors that inhibit their spiritual growth. If you are here, and you are learning to become more objective about how you show up in the world, that's incredible. It may also be painful. However, to grow we must all confront what we feel, why we feel what we feel, and how the past organically recreates itself in our future, all outside conscious awareness. In this episode, Lisa A. Romano will help you explore how you show up in the world and reveal signs that indicate you might be stuck, living out unhealed childhood patterns by seeking approval and attention outside of yourself. Awareness is necessary for spiritual healing, personal growth, and living a conscious, authentic life, so buckle in Dear Ones. Lisa has created a private Membership for those who are ready to ascend the patterns of the past and who understand that real healing can only happen at the subconscious level.
