Date: August 31, 2022Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number:  S3: E6: Kyle Hutton - Three More Bottles & She's GoneArtist Short Bio -  “Longest Days, Shortest Years” is the 5th full-length studio release from singer/songwriter Kyle Hutton. The 15 song project offers a ride back to a time when you listened to a record from beginning to end, and deliberately bucks the trend of experiencing an artist through a single, or an EP. “Longest Days, Shortest Years” delivers 57 minutes of the best yet from Hutton's pen and guitar. The title track of the new cd, produced by Jeffery Armstreet, explores the dichotomy of time, how a minute can feel like a lifetime and a decade can pass in the blink of an eye. Hutton, a father of 3 boys and husband of 21 years, provides wise lament on this universal subject. Michael Martin Murphey joins in on the upbeat, reflective track with a cameo on guitar and vocals. “Being in the studio with Michael Martin Murphey was one of the highlights of making this record”, states Hutton, “his willingness to be involved cemented my feelings about this song being the title track”.And it's obvious that Hutton's “Real Life Real Music” live shows and radio program have garnered him some new friends and fans. In addition to Murphey, Kyle is joined by a host of other performers lending their talents to his songs. Relative newcomer Haley Cole joins in on the woefully honest, yet somehow optimistic song “I've Loved You”. The Chubby Knuckle Choir brings their eclectic mix to “So Close to Saturday Night”, “Last Minute Austin”, and the live, unedited take of “Wingtip Shoes”, a post-depression era fable about a sharecropping family's demise. The project also includes an unforgettable performance by Jamie Wilson who joins Kyle for the duet “What it Takes to Sing These Songs”, a piece that looks directly into the soul of the independent troubadour. Three of the songs on the project were co-written with Hutton favorites: Walt Wilkins – “What I Dreamed Last Night”, Marcus Eldridge – “So Close to Saturday Night” and his oldest son Brooks Hutton – “Wallets and Watches”.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMSocial Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.kylehutton.comFacebook -  https://www.facebook.com/kyle.hutton.503Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kylehuttonmusic/Call to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and artist's social media pages. Larry Groce's career is quite an interesting and intriguing story. He attended high school with future recording artists Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and BW Stevenson. He became a regular performer at an NYC Upper West Side restaurant owned by Melissa Manchester's husband, and went on to record 9 albums and 36 tunes for Disney featuring children's songs including, when in 1976 he wrote “Pooh for President” for Disney to be released at Sears Stores. In 1976, his satiric novelty song "Junk Food Junkie" became a Billboard top-ten hit, and led to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, The Disney Channel, Dr. Demento, and A Prairie Home Companion. In 1983, Groce co-founded Mountain Stage, a two-hour live music program produced by West Virginia Public Radio and distributed nationally and internationally by NPR and Voice of America's satellite radio service to over 200 stations. He is its host, producer and artistic director. His musical tastes have been instrumental in defining the sound of the show. Mountain Stage was the first nationally broadcast radio or television program to feature live performances by Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Phish, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, David Gray, and The Avett Brothers. Dreaming Big, Carving a Path and Never Detouring Independent country artist Sandee June has a way of drawing you in with her rich, soothing tone and instantly connecting you with the lyrics of a song. She's a singer, songwriter and lifelong Texan who grew up listening to her parents' music – Michael Martin Murphey, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevensand Elton John. She admits she has classic rock in her soul, but when she sings, it always “comes out country.” Maybe that's because time spent with her grandparents always included listening to Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn – two of her all-time music heroes. There's no doubt you can hear the influences of these two country music icons every time Sandee June steps up to a microphone. Just like her heroes, the storytelling quality in her voice is not something she learned – it's a God-given gift that perfectly reflects the experiences of her life. You see, Sandee June's path in music isn't typical, but one she is uniquely carving on her own, fueled by words of wisdom from her parents that she's carried with her since she was a child.  While she's always kept those words close to her heart, for the past 30 years she has focused on her children and a career in nursing. “There are a lot of things I would have liked to have done for myself, but I knew it would take two incomes to raise a big family. I thought, if I'm going to work, I am going to get a degree and make good money,” she said. “When I got accepted to nursing school, I had a 3-month-old, a 2-year-old, a 4-year- old and an 8-year-old. I look back on that now and think – how in the world did I do that? But I did.” With that same grit and determination – on her 50th birthday – she remembered her parents' advice and set out to achieve a new goal. “I have always had a deep passion for music, so when I turned 50, I woke up and thought – this is the perfect time to do something for me. So, I went and bought myself a guitar,” she said. She taught herself to play guitar by watching YouTube videos and then realized it would be a lot more fun to sing along. Soon after, her fiancé, Ed Bradley, heard her and said, “by God, I think you can sing!” Empowered with six strings and a silky, classic country voice, she decided to start playing at open mics in the Clear Lake and Dickinson areas, southeast of Houston. The positive response she received encouraged her to start recording music and sharing it with others.“When I set my mind to do something, I don't detour. I don't get off track, I just do it,” she said.In October 2020, she released her first song to Texas country radio – “Somewhere Between Hell and a Honky Tonk.”Sandee June is beyond happy with her new journey and has already experienced great opportunities including opening for Texas country artist Josh Ward. “The first time we saw Josh Ward was at Armadillo Palace in Houston. He was walking around the corner and I stopped him and asked if I could have a picture with him. I was starstruck at the time, and thenthere I was on Labor Day weekend, one of his opening acts. That was a Cinderella story for me,” she added. What excites her most now is seeing her dream come to life and knowing that her children and grandchildren are watching and supporting her. “My kids were shocked at first – wow, what's going on? Mom turns 50 and joins a band,” she laughed. “My grandkids just think it's the best. We have the best time in our music room. They all grab a guitar or a microphone and want to sing and play. I hope it inspires them, as well, to be creative in life and keeplearning.” Sandee June hopes to be an inspiration to all and encourages people to dream big, create their own path, and never detour.

MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY has left an indelible mark on the American Music. Ray Wylie Hubbard is the secret handshake amongst those who know. Earthy, real, funky, unabashed, his records have been swapped and played on the road by everyone from Blackberry Smoke and Georgia Satellites to Black Stone Cherry. “Snake Farm” alone could be the red-blooded touring male's reality-based point of connection. That passion for the man who's as much a renegade poet as a roadhouse saint brought together an eclectic mix of guests for Co-Starring, his first ever high-profile label release. Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, Ronnie Dunn, Don Was, Larkin Poe, Pam Tillis and The Cadillac Three were just a few who clamored to jam, sing and generally be in the studio with the wizened icon. The Austin Music and Eric Church-inducted Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Famer was born in Soper, Oklahoma, went to high school with cosmic cowboy Michael Martin Murphey and spent his summers playing folk music in Red River, New Mexico. It all added to an iconoclastic, hell-bent for truths and textures in writing about the way outlaws live – and added to his outlier bona fides that he made 16 albums without ever signing to a major label. That's all about to change for the go-to songwriter for Lucinda Williams, Hayes Carll, Pat Green, Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings, Slaid Cleaves and Willie Nelson. Whether it's bluegrass/folk legend Peter Rowan on the tender “Hummingbird,” emerging Nashville renegade Ashley McBryde on the tough girl homage “Outlaw Blood,” SiriusXM femme fatales Paula Nelson and Elizabeth Cook on the randy “Drink ‘Til I See Double” or the trippy rocker Aaron Lee Tasjan on the elegiac “Rock Gods,” Co-Starring is a supple, musky affair.

Since 2000, Hubbard has released ten records, including ‘Snake Farm' in 2006.  Most recently, in 2020, Hubbard signed his first major-label release since 1978 on Big Machine Records.  ‘Co-Staring' is a set of collaborations featuring Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, and Black Crowe's frontman Chris Robinson.  Learn more about Ray by visiting RayWylie.com. ✅ LONE STAR DRY GOODS (podcast partner info & links) A truly unique shopping experience geared towards men. I Been To Georgia On A Fast Train”. Escuchar audio

Summer is officially over, but the sting that comes with the change of seasons remains. It's kind of funny how fall comes every year, and yet it always seems to catch us off guard. You still yearn for the long, sunny days, planned vacations, and melting ice cream, even as the weather gets cold and the sun sets sooner. Maybe the reason we're so nostalgic for summer is because it prolongs the inevitable: a new school, a new job, a new home. No matter how you swing it, the end of summer is a magnet for life changes, and since we're naturally averse to change, the end of summer seems to suck all around. But all that said, even though change will always sting a little, and even though we may never be truly ready for the change in seasons, there's something comforting in the fact that summer comes and goes every year. It ends, but it ends with a promise: to begin again next year. The cycle of the seasons means there's a bit of hope baked into every season's end. So today, we figured we'd revel in that hope a bit. Today we've got stories about summers of old and songs about summers yet to come. Join us as we listen to Tim Lowry, Adam Booth, and Priscilla Howe explore what it means for summer to be over and why summer experiences can stay in our hearts for years and years to come. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“Summer” by Tim Lowry (17:14)On a collection called My Favorite Time of Year, Tim recalls his favorite summer pastime: baseball. He reminisces on his favorite team, the Cincinnati Reds, his favorite player, Johnny Bench, and of course, his family tradition of watching the local Baptist church's softball league. Throughout this tribute to summer, you'll hear a reading of “Casey at the Bat,” the famous baseball poem penned by the American writer Earnest Lawrence Thayer in 1888, as well as an original tale from Tim Lowry about a young boy waiting to be informed if his new baby sibling is a boy or a girl. “The Ice Cream Truck” by Adam Booth (13:55)During the summer in Adam's neighborhood, the only thing with the power to control the flock of wild, tag-playing, bicycle-riding children was the ice cream truck. So, when Adam realizes that the piece of music he's learning on the piano is the same piece of music the ice cream truck plays, he begins to trick his friends into thinking the truck is arriving. Will the power of the ice cream truck tune go to Adam's head? “The Summer and You” by Mustard's Retreat (4:08)A reviewer in the 1970s once called Mustard's Retreat “music to cure what ails you.” Since then, the band has traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6,000 shows, but their music still seems to cure those ails. This song compares the changing of seasons to a relationship. Expecting and embracing change can be difficult, and in this case, the relationship ended as the season and lovers changed. Perhaps we can find a lesson in this song to sooth our end-of-summer heartbreak: change, while often uncomfortable, can be a catalyst. It can get us to make resolutions and finalize hard decisions. The summer may be over, but we can use the shift in seasons to start anew and make the most of what's coming. From their 2003 Album, A Resolution of Something. “The Third Step” by Priscilla Howe (3:49)Priscilla brings us back to her childhood high dive, where there was only one rule: three steps out, and you can't turn back. Will she overcome her fears and take the plunge? And what can we learn from the three-step rule to help us take the plunge in other areas of our lives? From her collection of youth tales called 5 Stories. “Summer Ranges” by Michael Martin Murphey (3:33)This song comes from a collection of cowboy and country music across multiple artists called Another Jubilee: Old Time Country Cowboy Singing. Michael Martin Murphey is both a renowned American singer-songwriter as well as a devout environmentalist and conservationist—he founded WestFest, an annual festival that seeks to preserve open range culture and traditions. The ballad celebrates the cyclical nature of the seasons, but also laments the fact that “snow must fall on summer ranges.” It's sad to see summer come to a close. But even as we usher in the sometimes long and cold winter, Murphey gives us hope: “Someday when the season changes, on summer ranges, we'll ride again.”

Off the Grid - Doin' It Dylan. The Legend Of Wooley Swamp".

Allí encontramos, entre otros, a su hijo Jamie, Todd Snider, Sam Bush, John Carter Cash, The Travelin' McCourys, Jerry Douglas, The Band Of Heathens, Norman Blake o The Infamous Stringdusters. Escuchar audio

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Every now and then in the course of my life I’ve came across talented people and I’m literally shocked that up to that point, I’d never heard of them or been aware of their work.  Carin Mari was one of those cases for me.  The first time I saw Carin play I was almost a little awestruck.  I’d went to enjoy one of Michael Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas concerts in the beautiful Brown Grand Theatre in Concordia,KS near my own hometown of Scandia.  Murph, who’s currently in his early 70’s, was followed on to the stage by a handful of other male musicians in what I guessed to be in their 50’s, AND a beautiful young gal with a Fender Stratocaster strapped on.  You might say I quickly sat up and took note.  In short order the entire crowd was treated to some great western Christmas music as well as some of Murph’s classics including his iconic song, “Wildfire.”  I couldn’t help from keeping an eye on the girl playing guitar and singing harmonies alongside a Country & Western Music icon like Michael Martin Murphy with such poise.  She just looked SO damn comfortable and “in her element” if you get what I mean.  I immediately was curious about her and her backstory. A little over a year later I was acting as the Master of Ceremonies at a business conference banquet in Fort Collins, CO.  I’d been a part of the conference banquet for the last several years and there had always been an entertainment portion of the evening.  Previously we been entertained by comedians, hypnotists and even a traveling comedy troupe, but low and behold, the entertainment hired this particular year was a singer-songwriter from Buena Vista, CO named Carin Mari! So, that evening after meeting Carin and getting to watch her perform again I was able to ask her to be a guest on the podcast and she’s graciously accepted.  She’s got an interesting backstory involving her introduction to music and Murph at a young age which is really evident in her playing and singing.  You can just tell she is doing what she loves to do and has a great deal of passion for it.  Some folks go through their entire lives, never quite knowing or understanding what they were put on this earth for.  Carin isn’t one of them.  She’s here to make and perform music, and she’s doing just that. So, kick back and enjoy this episode of The Troubadour Podcast with the talented Miss Carin Mari. This episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast is a conversation I had with Texas Songwriter and author Radney Foster…. Initially a songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee, Foster made his recording debut as part of the Foster & Lloyd duo, recording three studio albums and with nine singles on the country charts. Foster began his solo career in 1992 and his album Del Rio, TX 1959 produced four consecutive Top 40 hits. Overall, Foster has had thirteen songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including the Top Ten hits "Just Call Me Lonesome" (#10, 1992) and "Nobody Wins" (#2, 1993). His songs have been recorded by Gary Allan, Sara Evans, Keith Urban, Hootie and the Blowfish and Jack Ingram. He is now producing, writing screenplays, short stories and novels. He’s been one of my favorites since I discovered him nearly 20 years ago on a KGSR Radio Compilation CD. I was in Red River to attend Larry Joe Taylor’s Annual Hot Chili Days and Cool Summer Nights Music Festival featuring Texas Singer/Songwriters. Radney was the featured performer at a kick off event on a mountaintop currently serving as Michael Martin Murphey’s Bitter Creek Ranch and through the kindness and tenacity of his manager (and wife) Cyndi Hoelzel, we were able to find a precious block of time before Radney had to leave for sound check. Although Radney, via Cyndi, had agreed to the sit down weeks in advance, with no cell service in town, unknown daily schedule until the day of and limited internet connectivity, it was very challenging to find a suitable venue for our conversation. We settled on the second floor lobby of the rustic Red River Lodge next to the Mother Lode Saloon, windows wide open to the street during an ongoing rain shower. Radney has done yeoman’s work with SongwritingWith Soldiers, a non-profit transforming veterans’ lives by using collaborative songwriting to expand creativity, connections, and strengths. As the mother of a Marine suffering from PTSD, it was an honor and privilege to spend this precious time with Radney Foster….enjoy!

In Episode 59 of The String we dive deep into the Austin/Nashville dynamic captured in the new Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum special exhibit Outlaws & Armadillos: Country's Roaring 70s. Our feature interview is with Michael Martin Murphey. Best known to many for his crossover hit “Wildfire” from the summer of ‘75, Murphey's had a wide ranging career. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash and Lyle Lovett among others. And he's earned abundant recognition for his decades as a champion and revivalist in the field of cowboy songs and western music. But before all that, Murphey was a key player in the Austin TX phenomenon, residing there as a full time musician from 1968 to 1974. He was a regular at the Armadillo World Headquarters, the iconic venue at the heart of the live scene, where a diverse audience heard a diverse array of roots music, from hard country to traditional blues. Murphey, along with Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker (about whom he wrote the era-defining song “Cosmic Cowboy”) and others forged a country-rock hybrid that became the foundation for the progressive folk music field we now call Americana. Also, a visit with exhibit co-curator Peter Cooper.

MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY's song "Wildfire" was one of the biggest pop hits of the 70's. He returns to the WoodSongs stage with a brand new bluegrass CD called 'Tall Grass & Cool Water.' It's his third album in this Grammy nominated series that explores the similarities between Bluegrass and American Cowboy Music. This "singing cowboy poet", is not only the number one, best-selling singer/songwriter of American Cowboy Music, he's one of the world's most respected singer/songwriters in the Pop and Country-Western field. Michael Martin Murphey is also a recent inductee into the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame. THE MASTERSONS are each deft instrumentalists, and they've spent years playing in others' bands before coming together as a unit. Both the Denton, Texas-born Eleanor Whitmore and Houston-reared Chris Masterson have been musicians for as long as they can recall. Whitmore and Masterson apprenticed for years with other musicians, she with Regina Spektor, Susan Gibson, Kelly Willis, Diana Ross, Will Hoge and others, he in the bands of Jack Ingram, Son Volt, Bobby Bare Jr. and more but found themselves compelled to write and sing together. They met in 2005 and joined Steve Earle band in May of 2011. Their debut album is "Birds Fly South" on New West Records.

Join us back in time on the 4th of July to hear Cait Leary's music writing excellence. Minneapolis singer/songwriter Cait Leary just released her debut album, "Let Me Have Tonight," recorded and co-produced with Grammy Award Winner Brett Huus (Bill Miller, Michael Martin Murphey). Leary is a musical hybrid; poppy without the lyrical cliches, jazzy without the training, and sweet with a preference for profanity. The self-taught guitarist, wrote, performed and co-produced all ten tracks on the album, a dynamic mix of songs that demonstrate Leary's mature songwriting and her child-like curiosity. She coins her guitar style, "finger rhythm," and puts a great amount of consideration into her melodies, naturally drawn into complex instrumentation that is noteworthy in its own right. independentstream.podOmatic.com

As a member of Austin's legendary Lost Gonzo Band, performing and recording with such musical visionaries as Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Martin Murphey and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Livingston played an integral role in creating the music that first earned Austin the designation of 'Live Music Capital of the World'. Achieving recognition in their own right, the Gonzos' self-titled debut record was named by 'Rolling Stone', "one of the best albums ever to come out of Austin ".Livingston has seen a lot of the world since growing up in musically fertile West Texas. Traveling since the 80's as a Music Ambassador for the US State Department, Livingston has taken Texas music as far afield as India, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East , demonstrating again and again the unique power that music has to build bridges between peoples of the world. As Livingston says, 'When all else fails, music prevails'. This philosophy earned him the honor of being appointed,' Austin's International Music Ambassador', in November of 2009 by the City Council. This world traveled view was reflected in his album, 'Mahatma Gandhi and Sitting Bull', released in 2004 and named by the Austin American-Statesman as one of the year's Top 10 CDs. Working with producer, Lloyd Maines, Livingston only half jokingly calls his new project, 'The Flesh and Blood Sessions'. The new CD, to be entitled, 'Gypsy Alibi' is in the final stages of mixing and will be released in November.
