Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   William Finn (1951-2025) and James Lapine William Finn, Richard Wolinsky and James Lapine Composer/lyricist William Finn, who died on April 7th, 2025 at the age of 73 and director/librettist James Lapine, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded March 20, 2019 at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco. William Finn is best known for writing the music and lyrics for two Broadway shows, Falsettos, which was the first gay-themed Broadway musical, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which has become a staple of community theatre companies around the world. He also wrote A New Brain, which dealt with his near death experience following brain surgery.  Falsettos was originally three one-act musicals which opened off-Broadway, In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland and the latter two became Falsettos, which opened on Broadway in 1992, co-authored and directed by James Lapine, who'd also co-authored Falsettoland. James Lapine is best known for his work with Stephen Sondheim on Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods. Falsettos was revived on Broadway in 2016 and came to San Francisco in spring of 2019. Richard Wolinsnky had a chance to sit down with both William Finn and James Lapine on March 20, 2019 in the lobby of the Golden Gate Theatre to discuss Falsettos, as well as take a brief look at each man's career.   Martin Amis (1949-2023): The Zone of Interest Martin Amis (1949-2023), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studio on a book tour for “The Zone of Interest,” October 29, 2014. A film adaptation received Oscar nominations a couple of years ago. Novelist and essayist Martin Amis died of cancer on May 19, 2023 at the age of 73, leaving behind such novels as The Rachel Papers, London Fields, The Information, and his last memoir-cum-novel, Inside Story. English novelist Anthony Quinn has met and interviewed Martin Amis on several occasions. Their first encounter followed the publication of London Fields in 1989, the second during the publicity storm that came with Amis's 1995 novel The Information. In this episode, he and Jack discuss Amis's last novel, Inside Story, published in 2020. Although Anthony struggled with it in his first reading, he later came to consider it a masterful valedictory that encompasses all the best and worst of Amis as a man, and as a writer. Described by some as 'The Big Book of Mart', Inside Story is part memoir, part novel, and part writing manual. As well as revising Amis's final words of wisdom and warning to writers, Anthony and Jack cover the great romantic and literary loves of Amis's life, from Saul Bellow and his godfather Phillip Larkin, to the inimitable Christopher Hitchens. Crucially, Anthony reveals who he believes Amis loved most of all the people in his life. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamis

Say hi to Will of Willy's Pies - the lockdown-born culinary success story that has put pies firmly back on the map. The quintessentially British pies are handmade in Hackney (where else?), with a focus on elevated fillings using local ingredients, and lots of it.  Drawing on a decade of experience as a top-line chef, Will's furlough brain-child has since grown out of his home kitchen and into a commercial HQ in London Fields. With the help of his business-partner and best friend, Josh, Willy's Pies has become a London food icon with the opening of their first retail location in Netil Market in 2023. Oh, and they've even caught the attention of Ian Wright, who is now on board as an investor to help push the business forward. For me, they're a brand capturing the renewed spirit of local optimism. A business that embraces quality ingredients and quality time, products made and enjoyed by real people - who enjoy spending time together (watching the footy, cracking a few beers). What's more, pies don't have to be these shit, ultra-processed, factory-made monstrosities; they can be beautiful, delicious, well-designed, moments of indulgence, reminding people of what's really important in life.  In this episode, we talk about what makes the perfect pie, what they're fighting against and their growth ambitions over the next decade. Tuck in.

On October 29th, 2014, Richard Wolinsky conducted the last of five interviews with Martin Amis, about Amis's then most recent novel, The Zone of Interest. A new film adaptation of that novel recently opened to rave reviews. Complete Interview   Amos Oz (1939-2018), author of “A Tale of Love and Darkness” and other books, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in San Francisco in November, 2004, while he was on tour for his memoir, “A Tale of Love and Darkness”. Encore podcast originally posted on January 13, 2019. Amos Oz, the noted Israeli novelist, short story writer, essayist and peace activist, and perennial Nobel Prize candidate, died on December 28th, 2018 at the age of 79. The author of forty books, he was a firm believer in the two-state solution who felt, over the previous decade, that the hope for peace appears to be slipping away. Today, it's gotten worse of course. Today his greatest work is considered to be the memoir of his family, set against the background of the rise of Nazi Germany, World War II, and the formation of the state of Israel, and culminating in the suicide of his mother. A Tale of Love and Darkness, was published in Israel in 2002 and two years later in the United States. Columnist for The Financial Times Janan Ganesh, speaks to Jack Aldane about the London he grew up in during the early 90s, and which is captured in one of Martin Amis's most celebrated novels, London Fields. Janan explains why, for years, he has consistently revisited the book (of which he owns multiple copies), and how he once found himself compulsively picking it up every day to consume 50-pages in each sitting. They discuss the characters in the 1989 novel, including those Janan believes the story could have done without, and the one he believes is the greatest literary creation to roam London since the age of Dickens.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER: @mymartinamis Hosted on Acast. Martin Amis was born in Oxford in 1949 and is a British novelist, essayist, and memoirist - all of whom show up to contribute to his latest novel, Inside Story.    As it happens I read  Lolita in tandem with Inside Story, so the front-end of our conversation is laden with nasty Nabokovian-related questions. Since Vladimir, along with Saul Bellow, has heavily influenced Martin's writing over the years, I decided this was fair game.    Amis is best known for his novels Money (1984) and London Fields (1989). He received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his memoir Experience and has been nominated for the Booker Prize twice (shortlist for Time's Arrow and longlist for Yellow Dog). He served as Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester until 2011, and is considered one of the most influential novelists of our times.     We met via Zoom to talk about everything he throws into this novel, plus the way he frames it. Nabokov looms large, as I say, as does Christopher Hitchens, and, towards the end, ketchup and relish. Like many of Amis's other works, Inside Story contains plenty of very good laughs - one pretty well every 3-4 pages (in between, I frequently caught myself wearing a wide smirk). There's a lot to be said for this, and for some genuinely beautiful writing in the novel, particularly about Israel; plus there's a fair amount of engaging literary criticism. In short, it's well worth  spending time with this excellent hybrid; as, I hope you'll agree, it is with this interview...   It starts mid-sentence, with the two of us talking about Chip Kidd's dust jacket design.

Publisher: Random House, 2020 Up there with Money and London Fields as the finest work he's produced.' Observer This remarkable novel gives the reader the intimate testimony of one of our finest writers. Inside Story is the portrait of Martin Amis' extraordinary life, as a man and a writer. This novel had its birth in a death - that of the author's closest friend, Christopher Hitchens. We also encounter the vibrant characters who have helped define Martin Amis, from his father Kingsley, to his hero Saul Bellow, from Philip Larkin to Iris Murdoch and Elizabeth Jane Howard, and to the person who captivated his twenties, the alluringly amoral Phoebe Phelps. What begins as a thrilling tale of romantic entanglements, family and friendship, evolves into a tender, witty exploration of the hardest questions: how to live, how to grieve, and how to die? The result is one of Amis' greatest achievements: a love letter to life that is at once exuberant, meditative and heart-breaking, to be savoured and cherished for many years to come. *A BOOK OF THE YEAR IN THE TIMES, NEW STATESMAN and SPECTATOR* 'The Mick Jagger of literature ... Thank you.Super Saturday night’s alright for drinkingBilled as ‘Super Saturday’, 04 July 2020 marked the official day in which hospitality sector providers reopened their doors for business. For those eager to resume their usual socialising habits from the pre-pandemic days, this meant a return to licensed venues, especially pubs.Industry-funded regulator Portman Group warned people to drink responsibly (Night Time Industries Association, 03 Jul), anticipating the increasing opportunities for people to socialise and meet up in larger groups. However, despite a situation still far from ‘business as usual’, several areas were full with crowds of people by Saturday midnight. With greater numbers of people socialising under the influence of alcohol during the course of the evening, it became obvious that government-enforced social distancing rules were not being followed. Chair of the Police Federation in England and Wales, John Apter, tweeted after his late night shift in Southampton at 2:07am: A busy shift, we dealt with anti social behaviour, naked men, happy drunks, angry drunks, fights… What was crystal clear is that drunk people can’t/won’t socialy [sic] distance. The government also came under fire for initial plans to allow bars and pubs to sell alcohol off-premises: Speaking to The Telegraph (14 Jul), former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett said that whilst he was ‘totally in favour of kick-starting elements of the economy that have been so badly damaged by the lockdown’, giving permission for licensed premises to sell takeaway alcohol would ‘fuel the already worrying concerns about activity late at night, particularly in the major cities’.And as lockdown ease further, the damaging effects of combining social distancing with alcohol-fuelled socialising have become clear. For example, after the weekend, several pubs, including The Ravensdale in Mansfield, were forced to close due to ‘irresponsible behaviour’, potentially caused by the large gatherings of drinkers in and around the pub itself (Nottingham Post, 04 Jul). Moreover, as the government announced the following Monday that British tourists would be able to visit certain European countries without a compulsory fortnight’s quarantine upon returning, concerns arose over the drunken antics of British tourists at Magaluf, a popular holiday destination in Mallorca, Spain, just a few days later. Local residents reported ‘chaos’ to social media channels, some posting videos of tourists with ‘no face masks on, jumping on top of cars, drunk, drinking alcohol in the street’ (VICE UK, 14 Jul). Some local authorities reported experiencing similar problems even before the government eased lockdown measures: the day before the hospitality sector was due to reopen, Hackney Council announced a temporary ban on alcohol at London Fields due to ‘weeks of unacceptably high levels of litter, public urination and defecation and disturbance to local people’ (Hackney Gazette, 03 Jul). Meanwhile, polling data suggested that the government’s decision to permit the reopening of pubs and bars was not driven by public demand. A YouGov poll surveying 2,879 British adults on the same Monday after reopening found that just 5% had visited a pub the weekend of ‘Super Saturday’. The pollsters also found that most people were prepared to wait until later this year to revisit their local drinking establishment: 42% of 1,618 adults predicted that they would do so compared with just 3% who were planned on doing so on the day of its official reopening.Nonetheless, the government has pressed on with extending alcohol licensing provisions in the Business and Planning Act 2020 so pubs can purchase a pavement licence for eating and drinking on the public highway (Harpers, 22 Jul). Licences will last until September 2021.The effects of lockdown drinking reverberateMeanwhile, the lockdown has led to an ‘unprecedented surge’ in alcohol problems according to a One Poll survey commissioned by Help4Addiction, with four in ten British households, 53% of women and 71% of those made redundant admitting to drinking more than before (Daily Mail, 19 Jul). Experts believe that parents’ drinking to cope with the stresses of childcare and home-schooling since March are amongst the reasons for this.Nick Conn of Help4Addiction said of the ‘unprecedented surge’ in calls to their helpline:I have never seen anything like this. Anyone that was in early recovery we seemed to find was relapsing and anyone that was in addiction was getting worse. We are expecting another surge of calls when people go back to work because at that point they’ll realise they have a problem. They may not be aware of the consequences at this stage. They’ll want to stop but can’t.New Public Health England (PHE) data suggests a similar outlook: Since lockdown began, the estimated number of drinkers consuming more than 50 units of alcohol a week in England (harmful levels) has ‘soared’ by a third (to 5% of adults), and of the 500,000 drinkers who increased their intake to this extent, women and those in their 30s and 40s are most affected (Daily Mail, 26 Jul).Furthermore, the notion that the lockdown has been a stress-induced experience that people use alcohol to navigate it is supported by an Alcohol Change UK-commissioned Opinium survey (03 Jul), which found that:More than a quarter of people think they have drunk more during lockdownHeavier drinkers were more likely to drink more in lockdown: 38% of those who typically drank heavily on pre-lockdown drinking days (seven plus units) said they drank more during lockdownOne in five has drunk as a response to stress or anxiety.Parents of under 18s were more likely to say that they had done so (30%) than non-parents (17%) and parents of adult children (11%). Of those who drank more heavily during lockdown (nine plus units on each drinking day), 40% had drunk as a response to stress or anxiety. These findings add to a growing body of research about a unique period in the nation’s history, much of which has been documented in our briefing, Alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK, which has so far found that survey data points to roughly equal proportions of people cutting down and increasing their alcohol intake. But for heavy drinkers likely to do the latter, public health experts urge the government to support alcohol treatment services in order to reverse the potential tide of harm. Consultant psychiatrist and addictions specialist at King’s College London Dr Tony Rao, who analysed the PHE data for the Daily Mail, warned of the major impact that the surge in drinking will have on the health of the nation for years to come.He said: ‘COVID-19 has shone a light on the burning deck of the growing burden of alcohol problems in our society. We have been waiting for a proper alcohol strategy since 2012. This is today’s problem – not tomorrow’s.’Institute of Alcohol Studies Chief Executive Dr Katherine Severi, also stressed the importance of making sure that preventing alcohol harm is a priority for the national COVID-19 recovery plan, ‘to ease the burden on our health and social care services and improve the health of the nation’.Local spending cuts a potential driver of alcohol-related hospital admissionsA new study by King’s College London (02 Jul) has shown an association between increases in alcohol-related hospital admissions and decreases in spending on alcohol services since they came under the responsibility of local authorities in 2012.Social distancing measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have undoubtedly resulted in a serious reduction in healthcare provision services available. However, even prior to the pandemic, funding for specialist alcohol and drug treatment services were reduced as the Health and Social Care Act 2012 meant that commissions were transferred from the NHS to local authorities, who in turn have received reduced public health grants from the government. As Dr Emmett Roberts writes in The British Journal of Psychiatry, ‘local authority funding cuts to specialist alcohol treatment services may be displacing costs onto the NHS hospital system’, and this may partially explain the increase in hospital admissions related to alcohol over time.Since around one in five people have increased the amount of alcohol consumed during lockdown and 15% drink more at one time, this potentially further exacerbates pressures on alcohol treatment services, as well as rendering them unable to cope with increasing demands. Overall, this is likely to have the most severe impact on patients who require regular support from these services, as they are faced with a service under pressure from high demands, as well as reduced visits due to social distancing rules. On-screen alcohol leaves lasting impression🎵 Podcast feature 🎵Some of the nation’s most popular soap operas (such as EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale) constitute a potential driver for alcohol consumption in young people, according to an article published in the Oxford Journal of Public Health (01 Jul). A study led by Dr Alex Barker at the University of Nottingham concluded that alcohol content before the television watershed is so common that it exposes audiences to billions of viewer impressions. Alcohol impressions were identified in 83 out of 88 episodes (95% of the time).Beer and cider were the main types of alcohol consumed (46% of the time), as well as 53% of those consuming alcohol being women. In addition, where alcohol appearances were implicit, it was identified that actors were seen either holding a drink, or through alcohol branding (through labels on bottles in the backgrounds) displayed on set. This implies that alcohol appearances in television are not only potential stimuli for increasing alcohol consumption at home, but also provide a means of normalising such behaviours, since soap operas often reflect the lives of British families. Young people and children are particularly susceptible, since many soap operas with alcohol branding are also broadcast before the 9pm watershed period, thus providing a significant impression of alcohol to millions. In other researchA poll held by pricing comparison site Confused.com has shown that a large number of drivers share potentially dangerous views on drink-driving that could have been acted upon during the lockdown. Their survey suggests that a third (33%) of drinking pub goers plan to drive, a quarter (24%) of drivers admit driving after a drink because they don’t ‘feel drunk’, and one in twenty (5%) believe it was fine to drive over the limit when the roads were quieter during the lockdown.Car insurance expert Alex Kindred said (you can listen to the full statement in the podcast) that drivers ‘need to clue up on the drink drive laws, as there is a steep price to pay when putting yourself and others at risk.’A systematic review of evidence on the impact of graphic warning labels for alcohol and food products found that health warning labels reduced selection of labelled products by 26% (Health Psychology Review, 02 Jul). However, the authors cautioned against drawing conclusions on the available data as all studies that looked at alcohol labels were conducted online or in laboratory settings. The research team called for further studies from real-world environments to improve knowledge about the impact of pictorial warning labels on drinking behaviours amongst the population. (IAS blog, 16 Jul). Failure to promote the drinking guidelines may be reflected in their lack of effectiveness on consumption levels, according to the results of a paper conducted by researchers at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield. The team found that apart from a brief drop in consumption in the first few months, the current drinking guidelines – announced in January 2016 – did not appear to bring significant changes in alcohol consumption within the first eighteen months (BMJ JECH, 19 Jul). The team were wary of the fact that at the time, ‘there was no large-scale promotion of the revised guidelines beyond the initial media announcement’. Alcohol contributed to a loss of 178,933 working years of life in 2018, 18% of total working years lost, and the highest level in seven years (Gov.uk, 17 Jul). Public Health England (PHE) estimate that a third of those years were lost among those aged 45-54 years (57,558). The top three causes of working years of life lost (WYLL) due to alcohol alone were liver disease (84·5%), accidental poisoning (44·5%) and intentional self-harm (32·8%). The figures also show disparities by socioeconomic status: the number of WYLL for those in the ‘most deprived’ decile was three times higher (34,697) than those in the ‘least deprived’ decile (8,748), and by sex: men lost almost three times more working years (131,403) than women (47,530). PHE aim to support the potential use of WYLL due to alcohol as a new indicator in Local Alcohol Profiles for England (LAPE).The Health Research Board (HRB) (BMJ Open, 22 Jul) have found that many people with harmful and hazardous drinking behaviours in Ireland are underestimating how much they drink. Based on data from Ireland’s Drug Prevalence Study 2014/15, which interviewed a representative sample of the Irish population on how much they thought they drank, and whether they deemed themselves to be light, moderate or heavy drinkers, they found that only one in three people who binge-drink were aware of their drinking habits. In addition, women were less likely to report heavy-drinking behaviour (just one in 10) as opposed to men (one in five). This study comes as annual alcohol treatment data show a total of 7,546 treatment cases in 2019, a slight increase from 7,464 in 2018 (HRB, 28 Jul). These results indicate that many of those with heavy-drinking behaviour in Ireland may be unaware of the risks of doing so, which potentially endangers them since they are most at risk of harm due to alcohol. HRB interim chief executive Dr Mairead O’Driscoll affirmed that ‘further initiatives to reduce overall consumption and hazardous and harmful drinking patterns, and raise awareness around drinking patterns are required’.UCL researchers come up with new iDEASThe University College London Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group have launched a new trial offering digital support to help drinkers reduce their alcohol consumption (UCL, 24 Jul). The iDEAS trial is seeking over 5,000 volunteers nationally to test two digital support tools for drinkers who want to cut down. Digital support tools for reducing alcohol intake, such as apps and websites, are thought to overcome some of the barriers encountered by traditional face-to-face support and may have potential for decreasing drinking. Research team member Dr Melissa Oldham says that iDEAS will ‘inform the recommendations we can make for alcohol reduction’ (full statement in the podcast), which with the apparent rise in drinking during the UK lockdown, makes the trial a timely one.#ECARS2020 conferenceCoverage of the event from Ines Henriques-CadbyIn a time where research interactions have been constrained or halted, particularly for doctoral students and other early career researchers, the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group (SARG) launched its first Early Career Alcohol Research Symposium (ECARS). The symposium aimed to give early career researchers, from first year doctoral students to more experienced postdocs, a platform to network, share their work and experiences, and interact with colleagues at different career stages. This year’s meeting took place online on 07 and 08 July, and included 16 research talks on four themes: Epidemiology and trends (featuring talks on inequalities in alcohol-related harm); Harmful drinking; Alcohol and cognitive processes; and Alcohol policy. The meeting also included a career progression panel, which was extremely well-received by the delegates. The panel gave delegates an opportunity to ask questions and gather advice on career progression and opportunities. The panel itself featured four guests from a diverse range of backgrounds, disciplines and experiences: Dr Sadie Boniface (IAS), Dr Lucy Gavens (University of Sheffield), Dr Andy Jones (University of Liverpool), and Professor Dorothy Newbury-Birch (Teesside University). The organisers of ECARS are Dr Ines Henriques-Cadby (an MRC Research Fellow with a Maths and Stats background), Dr Inge Kersbergen (an SSA Research Fellow with a quantitative psychology background), Ms Jane Hughes (a qualitative researcher in Public Health, with an economics background), and Professor John Holmes (the new director of SARG, with a background in Social policy). As a diverse team of researchers, they were eager to promote diversity and inclusivity in both speakers and delegates. The symposium counted 72 delegates, from 35 academic institutions (six international). As well as academic researchers, delegates came from public health teams in national government, local authorities, and health and prevention services, as well as UK-based charities such as the IAS, Alcohol Change UK (ACUK), and Have Your Tomorrows (HURT). The feedback received from delegates was extremely positive and highlighted the need for an on-going platform to support interactions between ECRs, and more senior members of the alcohol research community, both within and outside of academia. The organisers plan to make the symposium an annual event and planning for 2021 is already taking place. They also aim to facilitate the creation of an ECR mailing list that will allow dissemination of research and career opportunities and support networking amongst the next generation of alcohol researchers.Government promises addiction strategyThe Bury Times (16 Jul) reports that one of the region’s most prominent politicians – Christian Wakeford MP for Bury South – urged fellow ministers to ‘adopt a wide-ranging strategy’ to tackle alcohol addiction, drawing on the experience of how his family struggled to find help for his late older brother, who died five years ago.Wakeford spoke in the House of Commons about how securing assistance for Mark Jones had been ‘a postcode lottery’. Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg replied (you can hear his full response in the podcast):The government are committed to tackling health harms from alcohol and supporting the most vulnerable to risk from alcohol misuse. We do aim to publish a new UK-wide cross-government addiction strategy that will include alcohol.Wakeford’s appeal came the day after he attended an online event for parliamentarians hosted by the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, Healthy recovery: Alcohol harm, COVID-19, and your constituency.Alcohol calorie labelling in Obesity StrategyLabelling alcoholic beverages with calorie information is potentially among ‘a raft of measures’ the UK Government is set to include as part of a new Obesity Strategy to get the nation fit and healthy (Department of Health and Social Care, 27 Jul). The new campaign comes after a ‘COVID-19 wake-up call’ in which the impact of the virus revealed how excess weight puts people who contracted it at greater risk of serious illness or death. The strategy’s plan to mandate the display of ‘liquid calories’ on alcoholic drinks will be put to a new consultation before the end of the year.Alcohol consumption has been estimated to account for nearly 10% of the calorie intake of those who drink, with around 3·4 million adults consuming an additional days’ worth of calories each week – totalling an additional two months of food each year. But research shows the majority of the public (80%) is unaware of the calorie content of common drinks and many typically underestimate the true content. It is hoped alcohol labelling could lead to a reduction in consumption, improving people’s health and reducing their waistline.Following the announcement, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK said:The government’s plans to consult on ending the current exemption for alcohol products from calorie labelling requirements are very welcome. When the calorie equivalent of a large glass of white wine is the same as a slice of pizza or a cocktail is the equivalent of a cheeseburger, it is clear why alcohol products should be included in the government’s plans to tackle the obesity crisis.Licensing laws relaxed in Northern IrelandStormont Assembly has approved plans to relax rules on the sale of alcohol, such as streamlining pub opening hours by removing Easter weekend restrictions (Northern Ireland Department for Communities, 16 Jul). Some of the other key changes include:the introduction of an occasional additional late opening hour for certain licensed premisesthe doubling of ‘drinking-up time’ after last orders, from 30 minutes to an hourthe alignment of the alcohol and entertainment licensing systems;changes relating to children on licensed premisesthe prohibition of self-service and vending machinesformal approval for codes of practice on responsible retailingchanges to the law affecting private members clubs. These changes come as Minister of Health in the Northern Ireland Assembly Robin Swann committed to holding ‘a full public consultation’ on introducing minimum unit pricing for alcohol (MUP) ‘within a year’, a move welcomed by Hospitality Ulster chief executive Colin Neill (Belfast Telegraph, 29 Jul), who said that he expected ‘the days of alcohol being sold at pocket money prices’ will come to an end under the legislation. In Memoriam: Roger Williams, ‘a true giant in the field of liver health’The public health world was saddened to learn of the passing of professor Roger Williams over the weekend of 26-27 July.Professor Williams CBE FRCS FRCP FRCPE FRACP FMedSci (born 28 August 1931 – 25 July 2020) was a pioneer in many areas of hepatology, including the delivery of an integrated model of liver care and being a key part of the team that performed the first liver transplant in the UK at King’s College Hospital London in 1968.His influence was also felt in liver disease research, publishing many of the key papers advancing care in liver disease, and founding institutes at King’s and University College London to further hepatology research. He founded The Lancet commission on liver disease in 2013, in addition to the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), on which he served as a chairman in 1983 and as honorary president in 2008.In 1993 professor Williams was awarded a CBE for his services to medicine. He remained an active and passionate advocate for improvement in the care of patients with liver disease to the end of his life.Dr Katherine Severi of the Institute of Alcohol Studies said:Professor Roger Williams was a true giant in the field of liver health, and demonstrated tremendous leadership in convening the Lancet Standing Commission on Liver Disease. Liver disease affects some of the most vulnerable members of our society and Roger used his indefatigable energies and powers of persuasion to raise awareness of its impact amongst UK policy makers, bringing an issue into the spotlight which for too long has been hidden behind closed doors. London Fields is a 1989 novel by Martin Amis. It tells the story of Nicola Six a clairvoyant that foretells her impending murder... Sounds great right? This film version from 2018 has a 0% rating on rotten tomatoes and one of the worst US box office openings of all time. It stars Amber Heard and Billy Bob Thornton with an uncredited appearance from Johnny Depp.  We discuss our thoughts on this film and give a spoiler free review. This week author and academic Max Haiven joins us from lockdown in London Fields. Our theme is artists in a moment of crisis, how do we respond? Coronavirus capitalism, disorientation.. how to remain positive and productive while being trapped between four walls and in the middle of a crisis. We try and bring some positive perspectives amid a moment of global crisis and work out how artists can even just get through this.. Max talks about mutual aid networks, peer to peer support, especially where and when the state will not take responsibility - artists are emerging as protagonists in building systems of care from below. Artists dream outside the box. They are 'abandoned by capitalism'. Artists know how to organise people, and a movement in art towards catalysing community. Artists are emerging as activists with a unique set of skills. Max talks briefly about aid for artists during the coronavirus - but his focus is on universal basic income, and all precariously employed, fully funded public services and reductions in rent, mortgages and debt. The key thing he thinks is that artists need to break the spell, where people think we should be getting back to 'normal'. Normal is just slow death.. we could have something different - something better. "We can take this weird hiatus to dream as dangerously as possible." Hilary agrees that she has been suffering a crisis in imagination - the big question is how do we create and fuel a national movement of hope. Hilary then wonders how to come to terms with being unable to be together in a space with others making things. A sense of mourning for what went before, a grief for our old lives. We then discuss Astra Taylor who quoted from Milton Friedman who said that 'during a crisis people pick up whatever ideas are lying around". This is the danger - that at the end of this crisis, those to the right will use this to impose another terrible dose of austerity.. we're poised between these two conflicting sets of crisis opportunities. We discuss the Green New Deal very briefly..At times like this we have to get together - so please do share the vodcast with others and let's get together through the new Bank Job membership site. It's free to join - and has been designed as a tool for national organising. People on the ground, working at grassroots. It's not just a battle of ideas - it's about how people are connected together. We need to stop the social atomisation and bring people together. Final thing Max says is there's a third force - we know we have the right, and then a left - he also talks of a 'revengist centrism' A big push from people who have been unseated and want things to change back to 'technocratic neo-liberalism' the 'middle class normal'. Max sees it as a threat. A system that serves the top 20% of earners in society.. We do not need to settle for a return to business as usual!

My guest today is Mr. Phil Bracy, co-owner of Bright in London Fields and part of the four-man gang behind London’s game-changing wine shop come restaurant P Franco in Clapton. Following the success of P Franco, Phil and the team wanted to take their same comfortable, fun, effortless approach to hospitality that made P Franco such a hit and open a bigger restaurant. And so, came Bright. Chefs Will Gleave (one of P Franco’s first resident chefs and co-founder of Bright) and Peppe Belvedere (formerly head chef of Brawn) head up the kitchen. They focus on seasonality and work directly with artisan producers and farmers which informs their regularly changing menu. Bright is the kind of place you can pop into for a glass of wine at the bar, have a snack, or settle in for a long-haul, special occasion meal. The food is top-notch, the wine list, as you can imagine, is one of the best in the city, they play great music, there’s nothing conceptual or overthought or stuffy about it  - it’s a fun, welcoming place to go and hang out and enjoy great food and wine. For me, it’s everything I want in a restaurant. I wanted to hear the Bright story and how this group of four guys came to build their niche wine/food east London empire… So, I headed over to Bright to have a chat with Phil and we cover the whole timeline - from the early days at P Franco, the opening of Bright and earlier this year, their third restaurant Peg. Phil shares his story of how he came to be - I guess you could say - an accidental restaurateur. Not coming from a hospitality background, Phil worked in wine retail in Sydney up until only a few years ago, and now he’s a full-time restaurant man. And London is all the better for it!  Bright is in the final shortlist for London’s Priceless Cities Best New Bistro award, along with Mao Chow and Tayer + Elementary  - you can hear more about this new international food award in last week’s episode with Christine Doublet so check that out if you haven’t had a listen yet. Winners are being announced this coming Monday 25th November across London, NYC, Paris and Mexico City.  Okay now onto the episode with Phil... He’s a super cool guy, and I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did.

Conrad Gamble’s Passion Inspired Him To Write ‘For the Love of London’

Conrad Gamble is a man after my own heart—like me, he has a passion for London and Londoners, so much so that he published his first book under the title “For the Love of London”. This book contains 100 stories told by 100 Londoners, many you’ll know, like Stephen Fry, but many you won’t. Each contributes in their own unique way what they love about this glorious city. As Conrad puts it, “From leaders in their own field to local legends, these are the people whose beat sets the rhythm of London.” In addition to his writing, Conrad is a performance poet—and curates a monthly poetry night across London called Ear Smoke. He invited me to his home overlooking London Fields in Hackney, the perfect backdrop for our relaxed and insightful conversation on everything from London to neuroplasty. “It wasn’t so much my view of London that was so interesting to me—it was really the combination of characters that make up a place. You could be anywhere in the world but it’s really the people you’re with that then shapes the history and the aesthetic, vibe and the feeling of places”. [8:39] ‘For the Love of London’ came about organically when Conrad began working on the project—he sought out Londoners who weren’t necessarily well known, but rather people who had an attitude and engagement that spread further than just their own benefit. The process of meeting the 100 people who contributed to the book was a great, joyful, and also insightful experience for Conrad. He broke the uncomfortable feeling of approaching strangers, to open up to him and London at large—highlighted by the fact he wrote Stephen Fry a letter about the book, on the spot, and handed it to him as Stephen was walking out the door of a London club. “A poem is 4/5’s until it’s performed.” – Kate Tempest [31:90] Conrad recites a poem that he used in his letter to Stephen Fry—the one that had Stephen responding with his piece for the book within 12 hours. And it has to do with neuroplasticity—the ability for the brain to change, adapt, and develop new pathways that can lead us to become new, hopefully better people. His example involves going on autopilot one night and accidentally driving back to an old house, one you no longer live at. You can listen for yourself to feel the poem in its entirety, in case you missed Kate Tempest’s quote above. Conrad is currently working on an ambitious film (which he has procured funding for) called Thunder Before Lightning. He’s staying a secretive about the film for now but definitely keep track of Conrad online to find out more when he decides to give up more about the film.   Links ConradGamble.com (http://conradgamble.com/) Ear Smoke (https://www.facebook.com/EARSMOKE/) For the Love of London (https://www.amazon.com/Love-London-Places-Things-Great/dp/1844039218/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1528152500&sr=8-1&keywords=for+the+love+of+london) Support this podcast

Good Beer Hunting

On today’s episode I’m joined by Jez Galaun and Xochitl Benjamin, two of the four founders behind South London’s Brixton Brewery. Six months previously, I had sat down for a brief chat with the same pair, before GBH broke the news that the brewery had sold a minority stake of 49% to Heineken. Now that the dust kicked up by that announcement has had the chance to settle I wanted to catch up with Galaun and Benjamin to find out how things had been going for the brewery post investment.  Brixton was the latest in a string of acquisitions and investments that demonstrated an increasing trend in the interest in the London beer market from some of the industry’s biggest players. We saw SABMiller purchase Meantime Brewery back in May 2015, before it was subsequently sold on to Asahi following SAB’s merger with Anheuser Busch-InBev, a year later. In December 2015 AB-InBev’s ZX Ventures investment arm acquired Camden Town Brewery, before also investing in its purpose built £30 million brewing facility in Enfield, North London.  Denmark’s Carlsberg also entered the fray in July 2017, when it purchased the struggling London Fields Brewery, in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery—the latter adding London Fields to its growing empire of international brewpubs. Heineken’s investment in Brixton a few months later only further served to demonstrate that London’s breweries are hot property.  This investment means that like Camden, Brixton will be able to expand into a larger facility, although on nowhere near the same scale. At its existing facility under the arches near Brixton Station—which the brewery has called home since it was founded in 2013—it was producing almost 3000hl (around 2500 US bbls) per year. When commissioned later this year, the new facility will allow Brixton to produce ten times this amount annually. But this will still keep them under the volumes of several other London breweries, including smaller independents like Beavertown and Fourpure.  The new site will also be located in the heart of Brixton itself, just 600 meters from the existing location as the crow flies. Galaun, Benjamin and I unpack the importance of this during the course of our conversation. We also discuss how the London scene is still undergoing dramatic change and whether or not that Heineken stake is evidence of an eventual path to control, as it was when they acquired Lagunitas.

"Geometry allows me the freedom to channel a myriad of different material. It removes the potential chaos of having too many subject options, yet remains open to sensory or poetic influence." Could you tell us a bit about yourself. How long have you been a practising artist and where did you study?I live and work in London and have been a practising artist since 1981 when I completed my MA in Painting at Chelsea School of Art. Prior to that I’d been a BA student at Cardiff College of Art from 1974 to 1978. I knew I wanted to be an artist from an early age… I never had any doubts about going to art school and was quickly drawn towards painting and non-figurative art.Could you tell us about these repeating geometric forms you create, would you say you are quite obsessed with certain shapes?Geometry allows me the freedom to channel a myriad of different material. It removes the potential chaos of having too many subject options, yet remains open to sensory or poetic influence. I work with a variety of different geometric formations but it’s true to say I find the circle to be the purest, the most universal of all geometric shapes. I never tire of its associations with art and architecture, with ritual and religion and with the cosmos. I’ve been making circle paintings since the late 1980s and feel sure I will continue to do so for the rest of my life.Tell us a bit about how you spend your day/studio routine? What is your studio like?I always walk to my studio, which takes about half an hour. The walking part is important …it clears my head and leaves me fresh for working. I’m lucky that my route takes me mostly off-road, through London Fields and then along the Regents Canal. My studio is in a beautiful 1930s building, owned and managed by ACME, an artist’s studio and housing association, and I’ve worked there for over 20 years. It has a cohort of about 30 artists and my partner Trevor Sutton works there too. He and I have a close dialogue; we visit one another’s studio every day.I keep the studio tidy and organised… too much disorder interferes with my thought process. I normally work in series, on several paintings at any one time. I start intuitively, by pouring layer upon layer of unstructured liquefied oil paint over the canvas. Adding the meticulous over-painted geometric detail comes later. These combined processes satisfy my need for both chance and order. I try to achieve an atmospheric spatial quality in the grounds so as to create the equivalent of an environmental space in which the geometry can exist. Once the grounds are done, next comes the drawing and then finally the careful over-painting. The colour changes a lot. It’s never achieved in one go, so there’s a discreet physicality in the history of the surface. Pointstar, installation shot, Flowers Gallery Pointstar, installation shot, Flowers Gallery  What artwork have you seen recently that has resonated with you?I’ve just seen Richard Long’s beautiful new installation Earth Sky at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. It’s an impressive experience, seeing his works in the context of formal gardens and parkland and the grand elegance of a Palladian house. His works take simple powerful forms; circles, lines, crosses, made in the most natural way from stone, slate and flint. And here they are made on a huge scale. There is a spectacular red Norfolk carrstone line, 84 metres long and also a giant circle made from fallen estate tree stumps. There are ghostly white pigment cascades poured from the tops of arched loggias on either side of the house and in the central Stone Hall of the house, itself a masterpiece, sits a Richard Long circle, another masterpiece in slate and flint. How do you go about naming your work? The provenance of my titles varies: some works are titled descriptively in numbered sequences, such as the recent Star, Ancestral Lines and Quadrille series. Others may record the place where they were made or an important event in my life, or simply offer poetic names that seem to fit their character. Every work is unique… it deserves a name. It’s important to use titles for identification purposes so I never leave finished works untitled. Quadrille #4, 2017 Quadrille 1, 2016 Quadrille #5, 2017 Where has your work been headed more recently?I’ve been making circle paintings exclusively for several years so I wanted to diversify by introducing very different geometry. By way of contrast I started exploring sharp pointed geometric formations, which, for no particular reason I have rarely used in the past. Firstly I worked with triangular motifs that quickly progressed into zig-zag chevron formations with a strong heraldic feel. Most recently, as variant of both circle and triangle I’ve started painting stars. Like the sun and moon, stars for me evoke the mysteries of the universe and the heavens: they come laden with inspiration drawn from the beauty and infinity of the cosmos. From an early age until I was sixteen I studied classical ballet. I was never going to be a great ballet dancer but I enjoyed doing it. It did however provide me with a developed sense of physical spatial awareness that I use to this day. I’m acutely aware of my physical movements in relationship to painting; how my body is set during the act of painting and how the scale of a work affects this. Composition-wise I’ve always had a sense of spatial order and discipline when it comes to proportion and placement. Chevron paintings like Dance acknowledge this and the Quadrille series is named after the square dance famous for its precise steps and figures. Is there anything new and exciting in the pipeline you would like to tell us about?I have a solo exhibition Pointstar, presently showing in London at Flowers Gallery, until 3 June. It’s the culmination of two years working on star and chevron paintings. Very large oil paintings on canvas are installed side by side with a series of tiny paintings on board.I show more star paintings in Life Lines 27 May- 14 July with Galerie Gisèle Linder in Basel. This is a three-person exhibition with works on paper by Trevor Sutton and burnt line wood pieces by the late Roger Ackling, who was one of our closest friends. The show is dedicated to him.Trevor and I are also working for the first time on a collaborative painting for a show at Cinnabar in San Antonio, Texas in September 2017. Four artist-couples are exhibiting individual works alongside their collaborations. Sue Lawley's guest on Desert Island Discs today is the writer Martin Amis. He describes his books as comedies, but, like London Fields and Other People, they are frequently dark and disturbing. He says that he has no choice as to the subjects of his books. "They come from nowhere and feel like a little gulp in your digestive system". Although he admits that he's sometimes appalled by the characters he creates, writing itself is something he loves.
