“I have that... compulsion to collect things and I was always looking for my version of treasure. I think the paper-sourcing was certainly a part of that." - Liberty Blake In the episode Rosa talks with Liberty Blake, collage artist and painter. They discuss their need for adventure, Utah, using found materials, and the upbringing that entails being brought up by Peter Blake. Born in England in 1968, Liberty grew up in an alternative, arts-centric environment that encouraged self-expression and creativity. She attended The Looking Glass School, a small experimental school that fostered arts and the environment. This formed the beginning of her love for art, outdoor adventure, and the natural world. In 1997 she moved to Utah, with her partner and son, where she co-ran the ‘Art Shack' at Sundance, teaching, exhibiting, and doing graphic design for the resort. It was during this time that she made her first wilderness-inspired abstract collages. In 2007 she participated in the "337 Project" in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she created the first of many large-scale ‘wall collages.' The most recent of these is the collaborative ‘Work in Progress Mural Project,' a 60ft collaged mural, comprised of stencil portraits of women made by members of the community in workshops that she runs with her mother and fellow artist, Jann Haworth. Liberty lives and works in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her abstract collages are a document of the wild natural places and neglected urban environments of the American West. She has shown extensively in Utah, in group and solo shows, and was previously represented by The Phillips Gallery and Modern West Gallery in Salt Lake City. Her work is housed in private collections across the United States, Europe, and Canada. Her current body of work explores the impact of wildfires, their increasing severity, and growing threat. Liberty has generously donated Lots 151-154 to the Art on a Postcard Summer Auction to help raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust. The Art on a Postcard Summer Auction artist in question today is Michael Scoggins. In the episode Rosa and Michael talk about democratising art, elitism within the art world, connecting with your child in your creative practise and much more. Michael Scoggins is an American artist best known for his works on notebook paper which feign the attitude of a petulant adolescent doodling. Similarly to the works of David Shrigley, the artist utilizes cynicism, irony, and novice drawing. Scoggins came to this style by revisiting his own childhood sketchbooks and realizing how disarmingly truthful they were in comparison to the paintings he had been making as an adult. His alter-ego, a personality reminiscent of the Dadaist tradition, Michael S., presents the artist as an uninhibited child. Born in 1973 in Washington D.C., he received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. Today, his works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, among others. Scoggins lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Michael Scoggins has generously donated Lots 311 and 312 to the Art on a Postcard Summer Auction to help raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust. Antonia Showering is known for her richly layered depictions of family members in landscape settings, deployed in warm, velvety washes of red, orange and green. Her works capture the ephemeral nature of memory, using canvas or paper as a portal into these private moments. Similar to the act of story-telling some parts are exaggerated, forgotten and other parts totally invented. In today's episode Rosa Torr chats with Sikelela Owen, or Ziggy as she often goes by, about new motherhood, themes of intimacy in her work and her artistic practice. Sikelela Owen's subjects are images of family and friends, of domestic life, of moments of rest and relaxation. Her dedication to the theme of intimacy lends her paintings a sense of strength, as if through searching for the precious in the everyday, Sikelela traces the shape of something subtly empowering. This is work in which a domestic muse is used to provoke an identification not with the image, but with the special sense of community and the family ties that the paintings imply. She holds a PG Diploma from the Royal Academy Schools and her work was featured in 2015 Thames and Hudson publication ‘100 Painters of Tomorrow'. Owen has exhibited nationally and internationally. In today's episode Rosa Torr chats with Jane Shea and Julia Sheehan who both coordinated the Hepatitis C Trust's women's prison team. Having met first as inmates and reconnected in the Hep C Trust's offices, the pair found an opportunity to reach women in prisons and encourage an environment where women felt free to talk, come forward and get tested. Our prisons are full of women who should not be incarcerated but who are in need of help and support through other means. Women in vulnerable positions are less likely to come forward and ask for help for fear of the implications and increased exposure. By addressing women's needs, some woman can avoid getting caught up in the criminal justice system and have their problems addressed in a more appropriate setting. Women with addiction issues are much more likely to have hepatitis C. The prevalence of hepatitis C among women in prison is higher than in the male prison cohort. Getting tested and treated is a crucial step in rehabilitating women's health and lives. Jane and Julia discuss their most recent project; a magazine called ‘i am' provides a cathartic outlet for women who are incarcerated. In this podcast with Sandro Miller we discuss his long time collaboration with his muse John Malkovic, his upcoming feature film, how to get a snake charmer to pose for a picture and capturing indigenous tribes that are in danger of terminal westernisation. Sandro Miller is an American photographer known for his expressive images who has been photographing people for over thirty years. With numerous award-winning campaigns to his credit, Sandro is one of today's foremost photographers. He has photographed many national advertising campaigns and has seven books to his credit and his work has been exhibited worldwide. His work explores the limits of portraiture in both commercial and fine art photography. Typically working under the simplified “Sandro,” the photographer maintains supreme focus on the body, revealing his subject's interiority through posture and expression. His evocation of emotion is even more potent in his solo works, as faces and bodies dominate his compositions, leaving little room for distraction from the people he captures. Sandro's most prolific muse and model is undoubtedly John Malkovich, whose photograph as Pope John paul is featured in his boxset. Enjoy the podcast. Miles Aldridge (born 1964) is one of Britain's most celebrated fashion photographers, who has worked for a number of international publications, including American and Italian Vogue, The New Yorker and The New York Times. Best known for his cinematic images of women, Aldridge's work is often brightly lit by fluorescent colors and depicts a world that is at once glamorous and surreal. In today's episode Rosa Torr chats with Eduardo Terrazas about his 45 years of practise, his use of traditional mexican folk techniques, his architectural aims and about reconnecting with nature in the mexican countryside. Eduardo Terrazas's learned practice spans architecture, art, and design, achieving a lively mix of geometric study and handcraft. Using an approach that marries South American folk art and European avant-garde influences, Terrazas has produced more than 600 works over 45 years. He first became interested in folk art as a museographer, later collaborating with the Huichol, a native Indian ethnic group. His series “Constellations” (2013) involves traditional techniques of yarn painting on wood board and fine beadwork in beeswax, processes that render brightly colored or monochrome mathematical patterns with the formal rigor of De Stijl. His architectural training has led him to develop many projects in Mexican cities, while his design background informed his work as a collaborator on the design of the logo for the 1968 Summer Olympics. Eduardo has contributed artwork to the Art on a Postcard Winter Auction, which will take place 5th-19th of November 2020. In this episode Rosa Torr and artist Magnus Gjoen discuss his use of the skull motif. why he calls himself an 'accidental artist' and his experience working for some of the worlds' biggest fashion houses. Magnus Gjoen's works examines how to change peoples relationship and preconceived notions of objects. Something which is potentially extremely destructive can be made into beautiful yet fragile objects of art. It's this misconception of beauty which Magnus Gjoen wants us to see in a different light, be it weapons, animals or the human race itself. The latter is capable of creating immense beauty but also capable of destroying it all. Taking inspiration from street and pop art and juxtapositioning it with fine art, he creates new and modern takes on old masterpieces, manipulating something powerful and strong into something fragile but beautiful. He often questions the correlation between religion, war, beauty & destruction in his art. Magnus Gjoen was born in London to Norwegian parents and studied design in London and Milan and has worked as a denim designer and graphic designer before embarking on a career as an artist. Magnus Gjoen is participating in Art on a Postcards Winter Auction which will take place between the 5th- 19th November 2020.
