In Episode 261 of the Long Range Shooting and Custom Rifle Building Podcast, we continue our Fundamentals of Marksmanship series with Part Two, revisiting one of our most requested and most re-listened-to topics from the archives. This episode dives deep into "driving the rifle"—how grip pressure, recoil management, rear-bag control, and consistency behind the rifle directly affect accuracy. We answer listener questions about loose versus firm grip, free recoil versus control, and why most shooting errors happen behind the rifle, not in front of the scope. We also explore how skills from pistol shooting and archery translate into long-range rifle shooting, and why shooters from those backgrounds often progress faster once they understand the fundamentals. If you've ever struggled with inconsistent tracking, erratic recoil, or unexplained misses, this episode will help you identify what's really happening—and how to fix it. Found a great reminder Psyche Wizard (@PsycheWizard) where this thought was shared: “The quickest way to succeed is to start now and figure it out as you go. You can't learn how to drive in a parked car.” So many thoughts came to mind when I saw this. I think it's easy to imagine sitting in a parked car, sitting on a bike, on a skateboard, a motor cycle, etc., and it's not going anywhere. Or maybe it's not even running or turned on. When it comes to acting on ideas or projects, starting to move forward is a good thing. Finding out new information or getting help along the way instead of being too afraid to even put the car in drive. I've done too much sitting in a parked car at times or maybe even too afraid of unlocking the car and getting in. What about you? Anything you are hesitating about to put your car in drive? Or peddle your bike? Or simply taking a step forward to start going in the direction you want to go in? Yea… me too. Thanks for listening. Imagine learning to drive… joining classes, talking to driving instructors, and taking theory exams in a foreign language. That's exactly what I just did. Two weeks ago, I passed my Japanese driving test! It wasn't easy. I went from knowing almost nothing about Japanese road signs, traffic rules, or driving terminology to passing both my provisional and main license written tests on the first try. I also completed over 60 hours of lessons, both online and in a car, all entirely in Japanese. In this episode, I want to share what this experience taught me about language learning: how you can absorb hundreds of new words, understand complex grammar, and actually use all of it in real life… much faster than I ever thought possible. Learning to drive in Ireland involves several stages, each with associated costs. The bottom line is that the realistic cost is about €1,500 if you are lucky enough to have access to a parent or spouse's car. It is a burden on young people who have plenty of other economic challenges. But it is also an important life skill, worth investing in, and no-one can disagree that a new driver should receive proper training.Pat discusses this and more with Conor Faughnan, Transport commentator.
