GESTIONNAIRES EN ACTION. Donald Trump a décidé de ramener les tarifs douaniers à l'ensemble du monde, à l'exception de la Chine, à 10 % cette semaine. Les indices boursiers, qui avaient reculé fortement, ont rebondi sur la nouvelle avant de repartir à la baisse le lendemain, donc le 10 avril. Sébastien McMahon, stratège et gestionnaire de portefeuille à iA gestion mondiale d’actifs, soutient que les investisseurs ont quelques leçons à retenir des montagnes russes boursières des dernières semaines. «Le Trump 2.0, c'est beaucoup d'imprévisibilité. Ce sont des décisions qui sont basées sur une doctrine qui est très profonde. L'aspect de l'égo du président aussi est difficile à contrôler. Donc, un contexte d'incertitude aussi fort que ça, les investisseurs n'aiment pas ça», explique-t-il. Il ajoute qu’avec toutes les annonces entendues durant les dernières semaines, il y a beaucoup d'incertitudes à savoir comment on peut évaluer la juste valeur d'un investissement dans un portefeuille. «C'est ce qui rend le travail des investisseurs difficile. Si on parle d’Apple (AAPL, 190,42$US). Comment est-ce qu'on peut évaluer les perspectives de croissance des bénéfices d'Apple dans cet environnement-là? C’est très difficile», raconte-t-il. À ce jour, c'est surtout la guerre commerciale entre les États-Unis et la Chine qui semble inquiéter les marchés. La raison : la Chine possède beaucoup de titres de dettes américains. «C'est un dossier qui est important parce que la Chine détient environ 700 milliards de dollars américains de bons du Trésor. La Chine pourrait décider d'utiliser ça comme arme contre les États-Unis en vendant les bons du Trésor en grande quantité», dit-il. Selon Sébastien McMahon, des ventes à grande échelle feraient reculer la valeur des obligations, ce qui aurait pour effet de pousser les taux obligataires à la hausse. Au moment de refinancer la dette, le gouvernement américain devrait donc emprunter à des taux d’intérêt plus élevés, ce qui rendrait le désendettement du pays beaucoup plus difficile. «Il pourrait y avoir une spirale à la hausse des taux d’intérêt. C'est un nouveau risque qu'on n'avait pas dans les 10, 15, 20 dernières années aux États-Unis. Tout d'un coup, ça vient sur le dessus de la pile», estime-t-il. Garder le cap Dans le contexte d’incertitude actuel, Sébastien McMahon recommande simplement aux investisseurs de garder le cap sur leur stratégie de placements. Il précise que le plus important est de déterminer à quel moment chaque investisseur aura besoin de son argent. «Acheter de façon régulière dans les marchés, c'est une stratégie payante», juge-t-il. Du côté institutionnel, il ajoute que les gestionnaires scrutent les marchés des devises, notamment l’euro, le yen et même le dollar canadien. «Une histoire si évidente, on n'en voit peu. Maintenant, le prochain filon qui pourrait nous amener vers la baisse, peut-être, ça serait les entreprises défensives qui ont quand même bien fait leur travail récemment», dit-il.
