Have you ever seen a picture of someone you've never met and wanted to know their story?I first saw a picture of Donna Auguste in Doug Menuez's great book –Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985 - 2000 …and I had to know more about her. A black woman leading an engineering team at Apple – her photo stood out – for all the right reasons, among a sea of pictures of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, John Sculley et al.Two years later, and I got the exclusive chance to sit down with Donna who shares her inspiring story for this podcast – from being the first African-American (man or woman) to enter the PhD program at Carnegie Mellon researching AI, to managing the Newton engineering team at Apple to selling her software business for $147 million. It's all the more amazing when you learn the obstacles she had to overcome. With a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Berkeley, Donna went on to research Artificial Intelligence at Carnegie Mellon where she spent the holidays interning at Xerox PARC in the early 80s before heading to IntelliCorp as a software engineer working on products which incorporated AI. She then went on to Apple before co-founding her own company - Freshwater Software. This episode is one of my favourites – Donna's story is one of grit, faith, determination, ignoring the naysayers and ultimately, a story of success. As Donna says when discussing the VC's reaction to her when fundraising, “They had a whole model of what they were looking for and I fit none of it.” Donna proved them wrong. And the lessons she shares shows that you can too, whoever…wherever you are.As this is the final episode in Series 2, I wanted to thank you dear listeners for coming on this journey with me. I have so enjoyed speaking to my incredible guests: Dan Bricklin, Rana el Kaliouby, Nolan Bushnell, David Byttow, Avery Wang, Megan Smith, Ed Smith and of course, Donna Auguste.I look forward to welcoming you back for Series 3.-----Let us know what you think of this episode and please rate, review and share - it means the world to me and helps others to find it too.Danielle on Twitter @daniellenewnham and  Instagram @daniellenewnhamDonna on Twitter / Auguste Research website-----This episode was hosted by me - Danielle Newnham, a recovering founder, author and writer who has been interviewing tech founders and innovators for ten years - and produced by Jolin Cheng.  Mentioned in this episode: Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985 - 2000 by Doug Menuez

Welcome back to the partially evil Cadillac Jack: My Second Act podcast. It’s a show so short, sweet and strange that Caddy may have written it on an Ambien bender. (His words, not mine.)  First off we look at a recent article in The Atlantic about the despair of returning to regular life. As Donna says, it was a scary but nice reprieve. Then we talk about the 2021 Music Midtown lineup and animals that eat your shoestrings. Plus it’s time to tally our scores from the last episode and see just how evil we are. Bad news. Lastly, Caddy finds out about the goats. Believe it or not, Cadillac Jack is about to be a yoga instructor. Turns out he may have to kiss one for the first time since his days at Tau Kappa Epsilon. The goats. Not the yoga instructor.

Today’s guest on Blind Abilities is Donna Jodhan. Donna is a multi-talented individual, an author, entrepreneur and an advocate for the  blind and visually impaired. Now Donna is  rebranding herself as a sight loss coach, aiming at helping people who are experiencing sight loss to “...become more comfortable in their new type of world…”, to become independent and fully functional.    Adding to her long list of credentials as author, entrepreneur and advocate is Donna’s unique perspective on sight loss, having been born with very little vision, regaining her vision later in life, only to lose it again as a result of a detached retina. As Donna puts it, she is “ ...back on the other side of the fence again.” Donna will be providing coaching to those experiencing sight loss, which is particularly important during the pandemic, as folks need to know that they can deal with it and overcome it. Donna has authored an audio detective series which aired on the Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) network in Canada; she is an entrepreneur, and has been a strong advocate for the blind and visually impaired for many years. Donna also shares her experience on a variety of topics ranging from confidence in blindness skills, to cooking, and advice for prospective authors, encouraging them to, “go out there and try, because you never know what will happen.” Donna herself realized numerous new opportunities as a result of developing her audio mystery series, “ DJ detective and the crime crashers”. Donna became an advocate for the blind when she realized she was not able to navigate and apply for a job on the Canadian jobs web site. She fought a long hard legal battle to affect much needed changes to the web site and finally initiated enactment of legislation in 2019 to codify these changes. but now she is handing off the baton - issuing a challenge, laying down the gauntlet to young people across Canada pronouncing that “it's time for others to step up to the plate... It’s time for the youngsters to move forward, it’s their future.” Donna is also collaborating with an old friend of the Blind Abilities podcast, John Panarese to provide coaching and training. John is the owner of Mac For The Blind, a web site where you can find training, audio tutorials and other valuable resources to help hone your skills on all things Apple. in fact, Donna has earned the Apple certified service provider (ACSP) certification as a result of working with John. Cadillac Jack has been trying to suppress Donna’s vote all week. At the same time it was Caddy whose ballot was flagged when he got to the precinct. We’ll see which one will end up on the rolls.  Eric Church has a few new songs out. Caddy thinks that means he has a double album in the pipeline. That’s because Eric Church with no street week, promotion or interviews, dropped Mr. Misunderstood.  The show takes a turn and dives into the dichotomy or Scooter Braun, Scott Borchetta and Taylor Swift. Caddy and Donna discuss publishing contengencies, like when an artist is restricted from performing or obligated to produce a certain number of albums. Listen and watch for more on the topic in upcoming shows.  “Whole Foods makes me shake. It’s not just a store, it’s a machine.” Caddy feels discriminated against when he goes into Whole Foods. Donna thinks it may be warranted. It all shakes out in the fourth segment of the show. PS - As a comfort item, Cadillac Jack brought home a bag of peppered beef jerky and an entire pineapple upside down cake. And some gingerbread popcorn. And brown butter cookies.  The show rolls through some presidential trivia. (“Who could say no to petroleum jelly?”)  If you didn’t have enough to be worked up about, stay tuned for the fourth segment of the show- laundry day. As Donna says, it’s compelling content but we really needed to talk about Caddy’s processes. It’s… worrisome. And leads to the question of “What are you freakishly good or bad at?”  There’s a pound of Libby’s Pumpkin in the pantry. Is it for pie? Unfortunately not. It’s for a pretty bAnal reason.  It has always been important to have the whole family under one roof. And it’s been that way for a long time. But that’s changing, as Wil is about to move away to Knoxville. The show ends on a more serious, down to earth tone as Caddy and Donna share their initial reaction to the change. Donna feels like she and Wil are ready, she’s excited for the next chapter. Caddy is having a harder time with it. Sometimes it’s just nice to have everyone at dinner.

Another show in paradise here on the Cadillac Jack: My Second Act podcast.  Luke Bryan biked a century- aka 100 miles- which makes Donna wants to summit something. She is thinking Machu Pichu or Everest. Caddy wants her to start with Kennesaw Mountain. Donna wants to swim across the English Channel. Caddy wants her to start with swimming across the Wills Park pool. Caddy uses the segment to cover Country music’s hottest new artist with a song that ended up in the Top 10 within 24 hours of release. Then Donna talks about why she thinks Caddy is not as invested and interested as he once was. According to Caddy, he just doesn’t like animal videos. Who has been to more health centers? Caddy went a lot because they have free… candy. Donna has been back when she had… strep. They cover some of the COVID-19 considerations that the University of Georgia’s Health Center may have released to students. Some of the recommendations are inappropriate for the show to broadcast. Just, consider wearing a mask. Little Hyde loved sugar. So much so that reminiscing caused Caddy to pull a U-Turn and head up Post Road. As Donna says, if you’re not from Atlanta, “that’s out in the middle of nowhere.” It causes Dona and Caddy to jump segments and talk about the newly re-discovered Nature Valley and Sunbeam stores. Caddy took so many laps that he had to get a cart. Rolls. Buns. 4 for $5. Turns out his food pyramid is made up of sugar, cinnamon and high fructose corn syrup. The segment caps with a reminder of just how connected memories are to food. Have your kids been all up in your business? Donna thinks yes- and she literally means her business. “Like a whole new gang of coworkers.” Nowadays everyone has to get creative about how they create alone time. At the end of the day, the kids really are the heroes. That’s one reason Charlotte was a red-plater this week. Jon Brasher has today’s intro. Brasher is Donna’s wusband and taught her the mastery of deflection. He is hilarious, lives in Johns Creek with his family and is up next to have his own podcast *wink wink*. Thanks Brasher! If you’ve been listening since the beginning, you’ll know that Caddy has been having some problems with his mouth. It’s finally caught up to him. The first segment of today’s show explains where Caddy is headed and why Roscoe was the first to know. The kicker, though, is how Donna wants to leverage it into her first TikTok milly and an energy drink sponsor. Is it true that Gregg Alman broke into Capricorn studies to record a song? Donna says yes and that it’s her hype song today. Then Caddy uses his hype song to reflect on CMA Fest, Fan Fair and his birthday(s) in Nashville. Caddy and Donna break into what makes country music so special (spoiler: it’s the artists), using the example of when Garth Brooks came off of his world tour, showed up at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds (at 10am on a Tuesday) and signed autographs for 23 hours. Did you know that Caddy once hosted a successful morning show on an Atlanta radio station? He shares some stories from his time on the air, including when K****** walked in (late) for a 30-artist show with one shoe on. As Donna says, “that’s how you know you had a good night.” Caddy and Donna then move in to cover Jada Pinkett Smith’s “entanglement.” The discussion runs for a while before smoothly transitioning into why Donna can’t stand words like “entanglement.” Or “conscious uncoupling.” Who names their child Apple anyways? “Out of an abundance of caution,” just tell Donna that Hamilton is cancelled. Back when Caddy and Donna were printing money (literally, they had a money printer) they had a weekend at the Four Seasons. Things got a little hairy when they were invited up to “see another couple’s condo” and found themselves in a couple of robes. Caddy and Donna want to set the record straight: are they easy marks? My guest today is Donna Cribari, former nun, current musician, music educator and composer. I've known Donna since I was a child. She was a part of a vibrant circle of nuns, priests, ex-nuns and ex-priests that influenced my understanding that one could honor spirituality even when one needed to challenge the institution of religion. In the late 60‘s Donna had been a member of the religious order of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in simpler terms, a Marymount nun. She was involved in the progressive changes within the Catholic Church that led to Vatican II. As Donna says “ we thought we were going to change the world, unfortunately the institutional church did not come along with our vision.” She shares what drew her to becoming a nun and what led to her decision to leave the order. She was proud that the nuns she lived with were harborers of Daniel Barrigan, and she is grateful that the nuns put her in the path of music. It was Bob Fox, a Catholic priest, living and working in Spanish Harlem, that connected Donna to my family. She describes who Bob was and the grassroots, inner city organization he created, called ‘Full Circle”.   Donna taught music at Marymount College for 35 years! She has been involved with the Arts Council of Westchester and taught or composed music for colleges, semi-professionals and regional theaters. For decades, Donna has kept a ‘day job‘ at Human Development Services of Westchester in Port Chester, NY. She laughs that her day job supports her music habit!  No surprise that Donna’s day job is another form of serving humanity; her organization provides case management and residential care for adults recovering from psychiatric illnesses. What pleasure to shine light on this grounded, loving, inspiring woman. Donna, “For all that has been THANKS, for all that will be YES!” Enjoy the podcast! #050: We Are All Caregivers, With Donna Thomson

Author and speaker, Donna Thomson, takes us on the journey of a caregiver.   In Episode #050, I had the pleasure of interviewing Donna Thomson and we dove into the topic of caregiving. Donna is an author and speaker on issues relating to family caregiving, disability and aging. She is a patient and family advisor on health research and policy. Donna teaches family caregivers how to advocate for care in hospital and in the community.     If you find this read interesting you can listen to the conversation in its entirety by clicking play on the player below or searching ‘Empowering Ability’ on your podcast player, such as, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play.   Before my interview with Donna I took the opportunity to read Donna’s first book, ‘The 4 Walls of my Freedom’, which really helped me to gain perspective on what it is be like to be a mother with a child that has medical needs. It gave me perspective on what it must have been like for my own mother, when faced with the medical challenges my sister experienced at a young age. Quoting Donna from her book, “Mothering a child with medical needs is a very public, but lonely endeavor.”     On the podcast I ask Donna, “Can you share your experience so that others listening can also understand your perspective? And, so other mothers maybe don’t feel so alone?     Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna shares, “My son, [Nicholas], has CP [cerebral palsy] and a complex disability. At 4 months [old] he was diagnosed, and it was like he became the property of health care and social care systems. We began to be assessed and I felt as though I was under a microscope. [I was] Grateful for the assistance because you feel like it is the key to the future success of your child, and you want to present as a competent parent. Then you learn when you present as a competent parent that’s reason for people to abandon you. If you seem to be doing well then people aren’t going to help you. In order to access the help you need at home you have to demonstrate failure as a parent. What do these assessments and scores about my baby say about me? Am I a success or failure as a parent? All of this brought the bond between my son and I closer and we would have very intimate moments when alone at home.”   I ask, “Do you feel that this pushed you into being a victim?”   In summary Donna replied, “Not exactly. We had to demonstrate to the system what our needs where, and to do that they had to show them that they were struggling.”     Finding Pleasure in Peeling the Potatoes:   In a previous conversation with Donna it came up that she had to find pleasure in peeling the potatoes and this connects directly to her book title ‘The Four Walls of My Freedom.’ On the podcast, I ask Donna, “Why do we need to find pleasure in peeling the potatoes? And, how do we do that?”   Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna shares, “I can’t leave my house, so how can I make a rich life of this? Watching the lady peeling the avocados next door through the window, [I admired] the way she was able to peel the avocado without breaking the skin was beautiful. I started thinking I can do that. Then I started thinking about how well I am peeling vegetables. It was sensual, secondly, I was feeding my children. I linked what I was doing with the purpose of what I was doing.     I started thinking about the tiniest things that I was doing as forms of meditation, and it made me happy. I wasn’t doing anything differently, I was simply looking at myself doing the jobs of feeding the kids, doing the laundry, and making the bed.   Locating the extraordinary in the ordinary. We have the benefit of the slow movement lived loud in our families. We do things more slowly, we are more contemplative, we do things more purposefully. There is opportunity in finding meaning and joy in the way we live.”     Everyone is a Caregiver.   Donna shares, “The word caregiver applies to everybody. At the end of the day we are talking about dependency needs met by someone else. A pet, a friend, we all look after each other even when we are perfectly healthy in the prime of our lives. You are not feeling good I will bring you over some soup. We don’t have anything in our society to say that caring for someone is okay. The pendulum has swung so far away from providing care [being accepted in our society].   In my first conversation with Donna, she helped me to realize that I am a caregiver. When I was honest with myself it was the truth, and it felt weird. My ego didn’t want to accept this language because of the societal stigmas that are attached to caregiving. At first, it made me feel weak. Upon reflection, and acceptance that I am a caregiver there is a strength that comes with being a caregiver. Caregiving is one of the most connected and real human experiences that we can have, it has been wired into our biology as we have evolved as an advanced species. As Donna shares, “Everyone is a caregiver.”    So I ask you, how are you a caregiver? I invite you to celebrate that you are a caregiver, and not to fight it or deny it. What are the benefits that caregiving brings into your life?     Donna's Life as an Activist:   Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna Shares, “My idea was do to a post mortem on our family experience and the support that we received, or did not receive, and to determine what was helpful and what was not helpful. I thought this would be useful for other families and policy makers. I became involved in inclusion. I became active in the family movement, and I became involved with the Ottawa affiliate for PLAN, which is all about citizenship.   I became aware of and met Indian economist, Amartya Sen, who developed ‘The Capability Approach’. The Capability Approach looks at how people can be supported by the community and the State so that they can have a life that they value. It is about individual choice and being supported to have a life that you value within circumstances of adversity. Sen was looking at extreme poverty in India, but I used this approach to look at my family.”     Donna used this approach in her book 'The 4 Walls of my Freedom’  looking at how people can make personal choices, express their personal values, and live in the community to do this. Donna and I further discuss inclusion, and I recommend you listen to this episode to hear these perspectives.     Donna's New Book:   I’m co-writing a new book with Dr Zackery White, a professor at Queens University in Charlotte North Carolina.   Donna shares, “Dr. Zackery White is writing about Caregiver identity and how it is so difficult to express the transformations that happen when giving high levels of care to someone. Lots of things grow and lots of things die when you become immersed in giving care to someone. Giving people language to create the narrative to understand your life in the now.   My part of the book is the what’s next. What can you do to be an advocate and take action; personal support networks, what are the assets in your community [asset based community development], and online tools including support groups. These are actions you can take to thrive in situations of adversity. It will be titled something like ‘Transformations in Caregiving’ ”.       I thank Donna for coming on the podcast and sharing her deeply personal experiences, and her insights on caregiving. I never thought grief would be a topic I’d get excited about…I thought it was something that you went through when you lost a loved one. Something hard and painful that you had to endure until hopefully, one day, you were out the other side. But then I met [Donna Lancaster](http://www.thebridgeretreat.com/about-the-bridge/#our_facilitators) and did her [Bridge Retreat](https://www.thebridgeretreat.com/)- a six-day deep healing experience that was honestly THE most profound journey I have ever been on (you can find out all about it over [here](https://www.thebridgeretreat.com/)). I have done a lot of individual and group self-development and healing over the years and nothing compares with this. It as an emotional detox that brings you back in connection with yourself, others and the world in a way that is truly, deeply life changing. Both Vicki and I did the Bridge Retreat last year and we’ve been recommending it to our friends and clients ever since, particularly when they are feeling at a cross-roads in life, feeling lost, burnt out or feeling ready to do some deep healing work on old wounds. And one of the key parts of the Bridge experience is learning how to grieve. And not just grieve the loss of loved ones who have passed away (although it is great for that), but to grieve any and all kinds of loss in life - from loss of innocence, to divorce, losing the life you once knew after having kids, losing connection with yourself during a bout of depression, losing a parent that moved out when you were young etc. Giving yourself the time, space and tools to deeply grieve returns you to yourself and in full connection with your heart in a way that you may not have ever have ever experienced before.  As Donna says: “Through allowing and supporting the natural order of the grieving process to flow, people find themselves remembering who they really are and living from this true place. When there is ‘unfinished business’ in our lives, it is very hard to move on and engage with life fully. Grieving allows us to cross the bridge from past hurts and sorrow into a place of lightness and joy.” And THAT is why we’re so in love with the topic of grief and grieving now too. Because we’ve experienced first-hand how it returns you to yourself and guides you back into a place of love, connection, wholeness and joy. Which is why we’ve been wanting to get Donna on the podcast, ever since we did the Bridge, to talk about grief, love, healing, ritual and so much more and so that you could spend some time yourself with Donna who truly is an amazing woman, with so much wisdom and love to offer (not to mention 25 years of experience in working with individuals and groups and training with some of the most amazing teachers in the world). Even just 45 minutes of her on this podcast will leave you feeling somehow lighter. So as you go about your day to day this week or as you lie enjoying the sun on holiday, tune into this episode and let Donna’s words inspire and move you. And if you want MORE from Donna then head over to the [Vulnerable Podcast](https://itunes.apple.com/qa/podcast/vulnerable-podcast/id1244426082?mt=2) where our friend Rochelle also interviewed Donna (we literally tag teamed that day) where they talk about Donna’s personal story which is SO powerful, our warrior sides and how we seek out partners that are like our parents when we haven’t healed those wounds…and a whole lot more. Basically, make this a Donna Lancaster week - she is true magic. Thank you Donna. x Selina P.S. In our next episode we’ll be doing a half-way through the year review - a chance for us all to take a step back and see how the first half of the year has gone and create a plan and a focus for the next 6 months. If you did your **Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018** then bring it along to the next podcast session!

Donna visits with San Antonio, Texas Veterinarian Rae Dishinger, of the Alamo Dog and Cat Hospital, who shares some of the "Threats to Pets" specific to the American Southwest. As Donna and her husband Gene have been moving about the country with Mac and Molly, they have had to be on guard against potential perils all along the way. In the West, they’ve been on the look out for rattlers and copperheads, coyotes and bobcats, feral hogs and even birds of prey. On occasion, they’ve been too late to keep Mac from rolling in burro poop and to keep Molly from eating cow pies. Donna chats with Rae about these concerns and asks what toxic plants may be encountered in the Southwest. Rae also offers advice on dealing with climatic changes when traveling with pets and shares the story of how her own beloved dog succumbed to the bite of a rattler.
