This week's guest is the musician, actor, writer, and podcaster Jordan Stephens. Jordan's probably best known for Rizzle Kicks, the chart-topping duo he formed with his friend Harley Alexander-Sule, back in 2008. He's since released music as a solo artist, starred in various TV and film projects, published a children's book, and now he's written a memoir: Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak and Dogs. In this conversation the pair discuss education, the impact of overnight success, ADHD, medication and self-medication, as well as their shared interest in psychedelics and Jordan's journey towards healthier relationships. For more information on some of the subjects Jordan mentioned, there are links below (including more on Professor Nutt and that toad venom). And Jordan WILL return to On The Mend. Ooh you are in for a treat this week, because we are diving deep into exploring another way of living with none other than the legendary - one of the leading guides of our time.If you don't know Donna, then you just wait - she is the wisest of souls. Fearne Cotton agrees with me and calls her ‘the wisest woman I know' and Emma Watson says ‘she has helped shape the woman I have become'.Donna is a therapist, coach and Elder in training who has been working with individuals, couples and groups for over 30 years. She was co-founder of the Bridge Retreat - the power of which is captured beautifully in the documentary Love(d) and author of the book The Bridge as well as Wise Words for Women. In this episode we dive deep down, right from the start, into a big juicy conversation about life - exploring what Donna means when she talks about the patriarchal trance and how to wake up from it. She explains what Phase 1, 2 and 3 of life are and why so many of us remain stuck in Phase 1 of life. And we explore what it means to become an Elder and how finding your own Elders can be the key to helping you transition into Phase 2 of life where true joy, peace and love are found.Told you we go deep! And if you want more of Donna (which I guarantee you will after this episode), these are the three main links for you to get started with:Website: Deepening Into LifeInstagram: @donnalancsDonna's newsletter on Substack - sign up here for freeNow sit back and enjoy this episode!x Selina

Donna Lancaster is a coach and therapist, best known as the co-creator of The Bridge, a retreat designed to help attendees navigate grief and loss, and the author of a book of the same name. More recently, Donna has published a pocket book called Wise Words for Women, full of advice on how to live a rewarding, connected life. I know we hear a lot of these buzzwords like authenticity and pain, but equally I think what a lot of us are searching for day to day is that person who emanates gentle, universal wisdom, that comforting phrase that catches you at the right time. Donna refers to herself as a ‘trainee elder', and to those she touches with her work, that's what she is. This is a conversation about how to find wonder and creativity in alone time; how to connect with nature; and just generally how to find a bit more joy in our lives. We discuss, among other things:Why Donna feels most authentic when she is alone [3:53]Donna's struggle with loneliness growing up [6:31]How Donna's relationship with nature makes her feel more connected to the world [12:!6]Are you a mountain person, a sea person or a forest person? Hi lovely, Well here we are, at the end of another quarter of 2021! How have the last 3 months been for you? If you're going through change or growth in your life at the moment (or plan to soon), then today's episode is for you. While we love to encourage people to go after their dreams and create the lives, careers and relationships they love, it's important to know what to expect on that journey of change. Because it is a rollercoaster ride and noone is immune to the vulnerability hangovers, shitty committee attacks and feelings of overwhelm and loneliness. And THAT is what we are discussing this week as we share how recent experiences of change and growth in our own lives reminded us of just how discombobulating it can all be, but also how valuable it is to know what to expect on the change journey and how to navigate the emotional rollercoaster that is an unavoidable part of it. In it we mention Donna Lancaster's new programme: Deepening into Life - which Selina has just started and cannot recommend more (she's not an affiliate, she just LOVES it). >> Find out how to join yourself here: http://deepeningintolife.com/And Selina's Monday Crew mini-podcast which goes out every Monday when you join her Monday Crew. >> Sign up (for free!) here: https://www.selinabarker.com/themondaycrewLots of love to you, x Selina & Vicki

Welcome to another episode of the Soul Surgery Podcast. I am so excited to have you here today as we dive into the topic of grief. This week I had the pleasure of being joined by Donna Lancaster, who is so aptly known as the Queen of Grief. It's a subject that most people would prefer to ignore because it understandably brings up many painful emotions. But Donna manages to bring light and joy to a topic that is so often avoided. You will hear us dive deeply into the wounds that we unknowingly hold in our bodies and how grief can serve as the gateway to transformation and deepen our ability to love and live in joy. Donna explains how she was initially drawn to this work after a diagnosis of depression. She dealt with this for over 20 years, carrying that label and not understanding what it meant or how to heal. It was only after sitting with this for a long time that she had an aha moment and realised that she wasn't depressed but was dealing with unprocessed grief. This episode will teach you to view heartbreak as a transformative portal to let in light and joy. This episode is one of my favourites so far and I can't wait for you to listen. Highlights Why grief is not always related to bereavement, there are many different types of grief a person can experience. Grief is not the price we pay for love. GRIEF IS LOVE. It is an access point, and it's another way to honour the life of those we love. How to support your body so that it feels safe to release grief in a healthy and supported way. When your heart breaks, it also opens. A heartbreak is a beautiful opening for change, transformation, and rebirth. Why depression, anxiety, IBS, and other health issues can appear when we don't allow ourselves to sit with and process our grief. How we can sit with and move through the communal grief going on in the world right now and how to find the courage required to let go and surrender. Thank you so much for listening to this episode. So many of us are experiencing collective grief right now, and I hope this episode provided you with some tools to BE WITH the pain and allow it to be your access point to an abundance of love and joy. I would be so grateful if you could leave a review on iTunes, and we can share this message of healing and wholeness with as many people as possible. Donna Lancaster is a coach and therapist with over 25 years of experience working individuals, couples and groups and she's co founder and a facilitator of The Bridge Retreat - a six day personal development experience offering life transformation through deep healing. She's passionate about the subject of grief and the grieving process which she believes offers the missing link for many, in our search for wholeness. This interest stemmed from her own personal experience of ‘depression' which she suffered from for many years and later recognised as unprocessed grief. She talks about going through life - like so many of us -as a ‘warrior woman' with a focus on strength, tenacity, and being ‘indestructible'! And how her body literally shutdown, forcing her to re-evaluate life and explore new ways of being. Donna suports people ‘to return to the truth of who they are'. “Through allowing and supporting the natural order of the grieving process to flow, people find themselves remembering who they really are and living from this true place. When there is ‘unfinished business' in our lives, it is very hard to move on and engage with life fully. Grieving allows us to cross the bridge from past hurts and sorrow into a place of lightness and joy.” We talk about: How healing is a return to wholeness How she worked as a child protection social worker for many years How carrying on warrior style may keep you feeling safe in the short term, but it's not sustainable The physical manifestations of mental pain can be ME, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia.. The deeper you go in healing, the more joy you can access That mental health is still shrouded in shame, but it's changing and we can all be a part of the change That to move forward - we have to deal with the painful parts of our past  How important space is to do the grief/ soul/inner work. Her upcoming first book The Bridge, a practical, supportive, seven-step programme empowering you with the tools needed to gain clarity and learn how to release the pain, fear and anger keeping you trapped and  move towards whole-hearted living. What does it take to live a fulfilled life, and be a fulfilled person? To realise your potential and reap the rewards of a life well-lived? Is it achieving good grades at school? Getting a good college degree and a solid job for life? Good holidays, a fast car and a big house? Lots of money, lots of stuff, a six pack and amazing teeth? And if you don't have these things, what then? Does that mean yours is not a life well-lived? Does that mean you are somehow not enough – not good enough, not wealthy enough, not as valid? And how do you measure it anyway? Is it through how much you have, or how many likes your holiday photos get? Is it through praise and grades and acceptance and validation? Is it through how much you've struggled and how much you've fought and argued for what we've got? It seem strange to think that we are born into this world without everything we need to fulfil our potential. That we don't already come equipped – batteries included – to live the life and be the person we came here to be. Yet, we have managed to create a life where we will never be happy until we have, own and achieve more. And there will always be more that we could have, own, and achieve. And in this way our discontent, both with ourselves and our lives, is designed into the system. This modern life we have created for ourselves isn't built to make us happy, it's built to perpetuate itself at the expense of our happiness. But all along, we already have what we need to be fulfilled, to realise our potential and to be… ourselves. Complete, whole and perfect, but with room for improvement. So why then do we struggle to find it and harness it? To love ourselves, and be ourselves, and live happy, content lives? Why are anxiety and depression and alcoholism and other illnesses on the rise when we have everything we need for happiness literally built into us? In this episode of the podcast I speak with Donna Lancaster about the idea of shedding away all we are not, all the wrong notions of what it means to be complete, what it means to be us, all the accumulated baggage and trauma, and finally find ourselves. The ‘us' that we've always been carrying with us, but we've been unable to see. Donna is the co-founder of The Bridge Retreat, which helps people get back to themselves by connecting deeply with their body, completing the circle of mind, body and spirit to find the true them, which they were born with. The Bridge was the subject of a documentary titled ‘Loved' which is an excellent place to start if you want to find out more about the work carried out by Donna and her colleagues. Heartbreak is inevitable and an essential part of being wonderfully human. The power of recognizing pain as a community, and healing in a community.     "The details of our stories may differ. But the essence of them is the same...we all go through loss, our hearts break, again and again, it’s part of the human condition. But what we're not shown, generally speaking, is how to allow and to embrace all those emotions and let them flow through us (as) they're meant to do, so that we can then really, really return to our wholeness. On her 50th birthday. With her best friend there as her witness. SHE MARRIED HERSELF! The ultimate act of self-love. And so we talked about it all: what made her want to do it, what the ceremony was like, the vows and commitments she made to herself, how she knew a lot of people would roll their eyes at it and above all the difference it has made to her and the relationship with herself since saying ‘I do’. As well as self marriage we talked about going through deep transformation in life, the suffering that is a necessary part of our development and growth and how to navigate those times of suffering so that you can get through to the other side where you’ll find peace, love, humility and all the good stuff. We talked about why it is NOT in the interests of a capitalist society for us to love ourselves.  And of course we talked about witches

Why is living in our authenticity one of the greatest things we can do? How do we do it? What does it mean? How are we harming ourselves and others by only putting out what is "Love & Light" chasing the illusion of 'perfect' by not honouring aspects of our entire selves including grief - anger, sadness, fear, including the pain, our wounds. Why do we label emotions such as anger and sadness as bad or wrong??? How can we trace those emotions back to their root wound in order to truly heal? or simply give them acknowledgement to let them pass rather than subconsciously shove them down. How does ignoring our grief turn into raging anger, anxiety and depression? How can we practice and release anger in a healthy way? Why is it so essential that we do so? We need to feel all feelings in order to heal, to learn to grow. We need to listen to all the parts of us including our wounded child in order to truly Love and accept ourselves. Over years of hurt we build barriers blocking out not only pain but also Love. Grief work is key to Self Love and I am so grateful to Donna Lancaster and thebridgeretreat.com for holding space for me always on this journey of healing.

I never thought grief would be a topic I’d get excited about…I thought it was something that you went through when you lost a loved one. Something hard and painful that you had to endure until hopefully, one day, you were out the other side. But then I met [Donna Lancaster](http://www.thebridgeretreat.com/about-the-bridge/#our_facilitators) and did her [Bridge Retreat](https://www.thebridgeretreat.com/)- a six-day deep healing experience that was honestly THE most profound journey I have ever been on (you can find out all about it over [here](https://www.thebridgeretreat.com/)). I have done a lot of individual and group self-development and healing over the years and nothing compares with this. It as an emotional detox that brings you back in connection with yourself, others and the world in a way that is truly, deeply life changing. Both Vicki and I did the Bridge Retreat last year and we’ve been recommending it to our friends and clients ever since, particularly when they are feeling at a cross-roads in life, feeling lost, burnt out or feeling ready to do some deep healing work on old wounds. And one of the key parts of the Bridge experience is learning how to grieve. And not just grieve the loss of loved ones who have passed away (although it is great for that), but to grieve any and all kinds of loss in life - from loss of innocence, to divorce, losing the life you once knew after having kids, losing connection with yourself during a bout of depression, losing a parent that moved out when you were young etc. Giving yourself the time, space and tools to deeply grieve returns you to yourself and in full connection with your heart in a way that you may not have ever have ever experienced before.  As Donna says: “Through allowing and supporting the natural order of the grieving process to flow, people find themselves remembering who they really are and living from this true place. When there is ‘unfinished business’ in our lives, it is very hard to move on and engage with life fully. Grieving allows us to cross the bridge from past hurts and sorrow into a place of lightness and joy.” And THAT is why we’re so in love with the topic of grief and grieving now too. Because we’ve experienced first-hand how it returns you to yourself and guides you back into a place of love, connection, wholeness and joy. Which is why we’ve been wanting to get Donna on the podcast, ever since we did the Bridge, to talk about grief, love, healing, ritual and so much more and so that you could spend some time yourself with Donna who truly is an amazing woman, with so much wisdom and love to offer (not to mention 25 years of experience in working with individuals and groups and training with some of the most amazing teachers in the world). Even just 45 minutes of her on this podcast will leave you feeling somehow lighter. So as you go about your day to day this week or as you lie enjoying the sun on holiday, tune into this episode and let Donna’s words inspire and move you. And if you want MORE from Donna then head over to the [Vulnerable Podcast](https://itunes.apple.com/qa/podcast/vulnerable-podcast/id1244426082?mt=2) where our friend Rochelle also interviewed Donna (we literally tag teamed that day) where they talk about Donna’s personal story which is SO powerful, our warrior sides and how we seek out partners that are like our parents when we haven’t healed those wounds…and a whole lot more. Basically, make this a Donna Lancaster week - she is true magic. Thank you Donna. x Selina P.S. In our next episode we’ll be doing a half-way through the year review - a chance for us all to take a step back and see how the first half of the year has gone and create a plan and a focus for the next 6 months. If you did your **Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018** then bring it along to the next podcast session!

Donna is one of the Co-founders and facilitators of The Bridge Retreat and has been working with individuals, couples, and groups for over twenty-five years. She originally trained as a social worker, specialising in child protection and worked extensively within this and related fields for ten years. Donna is passionate that the route to healing is by recognising your grief and then processing it, and I completely agree. I know many people that have experienced loss, trauma, and pain, but I can count on one hand how many people I know that have taken the time and created the space for themselves to really grieve the losses so that it can help them to live a fuller life. Ask yourself, are you able to breathe, does your heart beat? Do you need food and water to survive? If you have answered yes to any of the above, then I implore you to create the time to listen to this episode of Vulnerable Podcast, and then maybe you can start to think about how processing your trauma in the future. Donna is a walking Earth Angel and I feel so honoured to have interviewed her for VP. Get a pen a paper out and take notes.
