Welcome back to the first episode of the new year! We're starting off 2025 with a tribute to one of the most influential women in my life. Janet Holmes, lovingly called Sis. Jan, served as the First Lady of First Pentecostal Church of North Little Rock for 42 years. This episode is being released in honor of her birthday on January 7th. December 31, 2024, marked 10 years since her sudden passing at only 66 years of age. Yet, the impact of her life and the legacy she left behind continue to influence generations. The recording featured in this podcast is from a semester of classes she taught to the ladies of FPCNLR during our Personal Growth series in 2010. This episode includes the second class of that series, where she taught from the book “A Wife After God's Own Heart” by Elizabeth George. https://a.co/d/2ehdi8vTo those who never had the chance to meet her, it's hard to fully express how prayerful, godly, and precious she was. But I can say this: my life is forever changed because of her, and I am deeply grateful that God allowed me to be raised under the care and example of such a godly and loving First Lady.I cannot wait for you to hear this podcast, which I believe will be one of the most impactful you've ever listened to.

(The Calling!) ~‭‭1 เธสะโลนิกา‬ ‭5‬:‭24‬ ‭THSV11‬‬ “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”‭‭ ~1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬ มีคำกล่าวไว้ว่า “พระเจ้ามักไม่ได้เรียกคนที่ได้รับการเตรียมพร้อมมาแล้ว แต่พระเจ้ามักจะเตรียมคนที่ได้รับการทรงเรียกให้พร้อม!” (God doesn't always call the equipped, but He always equips the called.) (God does not choose people because of their ability, but because of their availability.) (Raising your children to love and serve Jesus is fulfilling one of God's highest callings upon your life.)

“If only patience were contagious like mumps!” Join Kate and Sheila as they meet an impatient 17 year old, Kit Tyler, who was transplanted from her native land of Barbados to a strict Puritan community in Connecticut. She landed unexpectedly on her aunt and uncle's doorstep with 7 trunks! After the death of her grandfather Kit had nowhere else to go but she'd neglected to give her relatives a heads up. The Witch of Blackbird Pond was Elizabeth George Speare's first Newbery award and it does not disappoint. Readers are transported back to a time in our nation's history that is often a big question mark. When settlers held witch trials where an accused woman had to do the swim test, if she could swim she was a witch, if she couldn't swim she was free from suspicion, but sadly, dead. From beginning to end, readers wonder what the impulsive Kit will do next. She jumped off the boat to save a child's wooden doll, she befriended an old widow that the townspeople believed to be a witch, and she started a schoolroom brawl by having students reenact the Good Samaritan parable. However, when her cousins got sick, she worked tirelessly day and night following the doctor's orders to pull them through. When the widow is blamed for the town's sickness Kit runs to her rescue. Who will run to Kit's rescue as she is put on trial for being a witch? Her suitor, William Ashby, who is building a house for his bride to be (he never asked Kit, he just thinks he is too good of a catch to turn down) or the impetuous son of Captain Eaton, Nat, who is also a friend of the lonely widow, Hannah Tupper? When a young girl named Prudence asked Kit why the people didn't like Hannah she replied, “Because they have never tried to get to know her. People are afraid of things they don't understand.” What a powerful statement! Reading can transform and broaden our world, it helps readers understand in an up close and personal way the lives of people in the past, present and even the future. Twelve years ago, on the tail of the success of his book The Engine 2 Diet, Rip visited small-town America - Mercersburg, Pennsylvania - with the good news about plants. Dr. Elizabeth George, a local doctor in Mercersburg, was also on a mission to help the residents of her small dairyland town make healthier food and lifestyle choices. She heard about Engine 2 and invited Rip to come to town and speak at restaurants, churches, and even the local high school - challenging them to the Engine 2 28-Day Challenge. Not surprisingly, he was met with mixed reactions and a healthy dose of farm-raised skepticism. For the people who took part, the results were explosive. Luckily, Rip brought along a film crew to capture it all. And…last year, this same crew followed up with Dr. Liz and some of those residents to see how they were doing 12 years later. The result is this new film, PLANTSTRONG Legacy: 12 Years of Wellness. So, today, we bring you a wonderful interview with Dr. Liz George and the filmmaker, Jeff Nelson, as we celebrate the release of this movie and catch up on those days when we were driving around Mercersburg spreading the good news about plants!Watch the episode on YouTubeWatch the FilmEpisode WebpageVisit PLANTSTRONG Foods and stock up on all of our latest products:https://plantstrongfoods.com/ Join our PLANTSTRONG Sedona Retreat - October 9-14, 2023:https://plantstrongfoods.com/pages/2023-sedona-retreat Follow PLANTSTRONG on Facebook for tips, recipes, and the chance to see Rip live each weekhttps://www.facebook.com/GoPlantstrong PLANTSTRONG Instagram - Check us out and share your favorite PLANTSTRONG products and why you love it! Lisa Marie Cabrelli is my dear friend and one of my favorite people on the planet to talk books with, because her insights always knock me out. She came back to the show today to talk about "In the Woods," the first book in the Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French. Lisa Marie got me hooked on this series several years ago, and I love hearing her brilliant insights about why crime fiction reflects national identity. Tana French writes literary, thought-provoking genre fiction that is deeply immersive and, as I found out, gets even better on re-reads.   Host: Julie Strauss Website/Instagram   Guest: Lisa Marie Cabrelli Website/Instagram/Twitter     Join the Best Book Ever Newsletter HERE!   Subscribe for FREE to receive weekly emails with complete show notes, photos of our guests, and updates on what Julie is reading on her own time.   Support the podcast for just $5/month and you'll receive the weekly newsletter AND a monthly themed curated book list.   Become a Founder for $100 and you'll receive the weekly newsletter, the monthly curated book list, AND a personal thank you on the podcast AND a Best Book Ever T-Shirt in your favorite color and style.   Discussed in this episode:   In the Woods by Tana French (Book 1 of the Dublin Murder Squad) Elizabeth George Listen to author Aime Austin talk to me about What Came Before He Shot Her by Elizabeth George in Episode 047 Ian Rankin The Inspector Gamache Series by Louise Penny Tana French's Intimate Crime Fiction, by Laura Miller, the New Yorker, September 26, 2016 Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason Ann Patchett's bookstore, Parnassus Books This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell Severance by Ling Ma Listen to Lisa Marie's previous appearance on this podcast, when she talked about Severance on Episode 050 Read "The Descent" by Lisa Marie Cabrelli on Yonder   (Note: Some of the above links are affiliate links. Why are mystery novels so captivating? Well, name a better way to be thrilled without ever having to leave your own home … For over 30 years, #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George has been penning page-turners for crime novel enthusiasts around the globe. This winter, the Seattle-based writer is back with the paperback release of her latest book Something to Hide. This book is #21 in George's A Lynley Novel series, known for involving crimes that are “deeply shocking and suspenseful.” This time, Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata investigate the murder of one of their own: a police detective sergeant who was working on a special task force in North London's Nigerian community. When an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death, Lynley is assigned to the case, which he soon learns has far-reaching and unexpected cultural associations. Lynley, Havers, and Nkata must sort through the lies of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another. And just when we think we know who the killer is, George turns the tables. With a combination of adventure, sociocultural implications, and engaging characters, Something to Hide is a world familiar to seasoned readers of George's writing, and enrapturing to newcomers. Elizabeth George is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-one psychological suspense novels, four young adult novels, two books of nonfiction, and two short-story collections. Her work has been honored with the Anthony and Agatha awards, two Edgar nominations, and both France's and Germany's first prize for crime fiction. She lives in Washington State. Moira Macdonald is a longtime arts critic for The Seattle Times, writing primarily about books, movies and dance. Something to Hide: A Lynley Novel (Hardcover) Third Place Books

By implication, understanding what God's will is involves understanding purpose. In essence it is more accurate to talk about purpose management than time management. Redeem your time means to reclaim, recover, retrieve, rescue and regain it. Elizabeth George, speaking of how we have to make the most of our time says “We cannot manage time. We can only manage our self”. People often ask me about my productivity. They wonder whether I sleep at all. My answer is, “Yes I do sleep very well.” I also tell them that the key to my productivity is MY USE OF TIME. We have all been give 24 hours in a day, the difference between us is how we use that time. Many of us are good at keeping appointments with others, few of us are good at keeping appointments with ourselves. When one is able to practise self-respect by keeping appointments with oneself, then one is on their way to a highly productive life. This will be seen in all aspects of your life including your rules of engagement when it comes to social gatherings. In this message, I will give you tools to enable you to master your management of time.

It was a fast read. Now reading The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld; Non-fiction: Resonance by Nancy Duarte, on how to give presentations that the audience, well, resonates with--doesn't make them fall asleep. I'll be talking with author Cai Emmons about her latest book and what her take is on mindset. Plus, what her upcoming talk at the Eugene Willamette Writers chapter meeting is about. And now: Procrastination and Writer's Block ▪ Where are you? (In between books? Stuck in the middle? On deadline?) ▪ Why? (Self-doubt? Too hard? Too big of a project? Distracted? Emotionally/Creatively dry? Exhausted?) ▪ What can you do about it? ⁃ Accept it. Clean out that closet. Maybe you really can't write until you've cleaned your office. ⁃ Research theme and character motivations. ⁃ Sleep. ⁃ Go play. ⁃ Take a walk. Or a shower. Do yard work. ⁃ Write about something different. ⁃ Journal. Or do other writing exercises or prompts. ⁃ Set a timer and just do it. Be miserable for 25 minutes, until you aren't. ⁃ Wait for the story. Do another hobby. (Knitting, or snorkeling.) ⁃ Meet up with other authors and discuss the perceived problem. ⁃ Chip away at it. Trust that if those wretched 300 words took 90 minutes to write and the scratched at you the whole time, when you read you manuscript before editing, you won't be able to tell where those 300 words are. ⁃ Affirmations. "I'm doing the best I can right now." Remember, your best yesterday doesn't equal your best today. You're different every day.

Today's guest is an executive leader with international experience who has worked at the most senior levels of two Fortune 100 companies and is known as a strategic collaborator who brings people together to do great things. What caught my attention was her groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting, transformational book, “True South.” This book will teach you how to master the art of faking authentic leadership. You'll have your employees, customers, and shareholders eating out of your hands with these tricks and tips designed to save you time and prevent uncomfortable displays of vulnerability. Yes, it's as funny as it sounds. It's her hope that her readers will be able to use this parody of corporate life, and the shared laughter that results, to spark conversation and change in the workplace This book is one of the ways she shares her passion for designing strategies and conversations that engage people, creating holistic solutions, and transforming organizations. All of this is built upon her expertise in communications, culture change, collaboration, executive effectiveness and team leadership. Please join me in welcoming Elizabeth George. In this episode we explore: how she defines leadership: “Having self-awareness to know who you are and who you are not, and then having the courage to be who you are.” what she did when her leadership style was called out when she was just getting started in her career. how the qualities of a leader have changed over the years and how she didn't see herself as a leader under the old definition. what led her to write a humorous take on leadership books and how it ended up becoming a parable that unintentionally shares serious takeaways. Stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear what I thought were the key takeaways you could put into practice this week and benefit from for years to come.
