“Patterns of millennia have prepared us for another world, another time, another era. At the same time, the virus pandemic, unlike any ever known in human history or pre-history, has confused our values, uprooted our traditions, and left us in a labyrinth of misdirection. Factors unique in human experience are all around us—the inevitable unfolding towards a planetary civilization, the rise of women to full partnership with men, the daily revolutions in technology, the media becoming the matrix of culture, and the revolution in the understanding of human and social capacities. The Zeit is getting Geisty as the old story itself is undergoing the sacred wound in order that it too grows and addresses the multiples of experience and complexity of life unknown to our great grandparents. We have become so full of holes that perhaps we are well on the way to becoming holy.”Jean Houston from her chapter contributed to the book Dawn of an Era of Well-BeingWe are certainly living in “interesting times” to quote the arch left-handed blessing from the Chinese. So what does that mean for us? Through the anxiety and tumult, perhaps we are finding our way to transformation to a better world, and there may be a light at the end of the tunnel of these interesting times. Fortunately there are people like our guests Jean Houston and Anneloes Smitsman to offer some guidance during this very complicated historical epoch, because we need to get it right. The world may seem to be in chaos, but this would not be the first time humanity has undergone cataclysmic circumstances and made giant strides forward; the Renaissance was proceeded by the Dark Ages is a notable example. But the stakes are higher this time. In today's conversation, Jean and Anneloes join Fred, Ervin, and Alison to analyze the situation and consider why we should feel optimistic in the midst of the uncertainty—and the steps we must collectively take to turn a breakdown into a breakthrough.Jean Houston, PhD, is an innovative scholar, futurist, and researcher in human capacities, social change, and systemic transformation. She is one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement and one of the foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our time. She has been a key player in the empowerment of women around the world, and was awarded the Synergy Superstar Award 2020 by the Source of Synergy Foundation for her exemplary work inspiring us to source our highest human capacities. A powerful and dynamic speaker, and renowned for her gifts as a mythic storyteller, Dr Houston holds conferences, seminars, and mentoring programs with leaders and change agents worldwide. She has worked intensively in over 40 cultures, lectured in over 100 countries, and worked with major organizations such as UNICEF, UNDP, and NASA, as well as helping global state leaders, leading educational institutions, business organizations, and millions of people to enhance and deepen their own uniqueness. She has authored nearly 34 published books and a great many unpublished books and manuscripts. Dr Houston is Chancellor of Meridian University and has served on the faculties of Columbia University, Hunter College, Marymount College, The New School for Social Research, and the University of California.

She studied acting at Marymount College and learned Yiddish at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. And is known for her work on The Good Shepherd (2006) and Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish (2010), and inmate Boyle on “Orange is the New Black.”Allen Lewis Rickman grew up in Far Rockaway in a Yiddish-speaking family. He attended Modern Orthodox schools and studied film at Brooklyn College. He is known for his work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Boardwalk Empire as actor and translator, You Don't Know Jack and The Cobbler (2014) – and is quite busy as a Yiddish translator and he lectures and writes about Yiddish Theatre. Yelena and Allen are probably best known for the brilliant opening of the Coen brother’s “A Serious Man” which we got to at the end of the conversation. And -- do not miss Yelena's Allen's rendition of a piece about a kazen-lover and baseball. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest today is Donna Cribari, former nun, current musician, music educator and composer. I've known Donna since I was a child. She was a part of a vibrant circle of nuns, priests, ex-nuns and ex-priests that influenced my understanding that one could honor spirituality even when one needed to challenge the institution of religion. In the late 60‘s Donna had been a member of the religious order of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in simpler terms, a Marymount nun. She was involved in the progressive changes within the Catholic Church that led to Vatican II. As Donna says “ we thought we were going to change the world, unfortunately the institutional church did not come along with our vision.” She shares what drew her to becoming a nun and what led to her decision to leave the order. She was proud that the nuns she lived with were harborers of Daniel Barrigan, and she is grateful that the nuns put her in the path of music. It was Bob Fox, a Catholic priest, living and working in Spanish Harlem, that connected Donna to my family. She describes who Bob was and the grassroots, inner city organization he created, called ‘Full Circle”. Donna taught music at Marymount College for 35 years! She has been involved with the Arts Council of Westchester and taught or composed music for colleges, semi-professionals and regional theaters. For decades, Donna has kept a ‘day job‘ at Human Development Services of Westchester in Port Chester, NY. She laughs that her day job supports her music habit! No surprise that Donna’s day job is another form of serving humanity; her organization provides case management and residential care for adults recovering from psychiatric illnesses. What pleasure to shine light on this grounded, loving, inspiring woman. Donna, “For all that has been THANKS, for all that will be YES!” Enjoy the podcast! He has had over twenty years of coaching and teaching science.

Mary Bennett, a Marymount College graduate and counselor. Mary’s warm and inviting, she hugs me right away, and we sit on her bed for our chat. Her room smells like fresh laundry and traces of powdery, floral notes, or as Mary calls them, her old school perfumes. On her altar she’s arranged photographs of her kin and a vase of artificial roses nestled among plants. Within minutes, we’re transported into the most emotional memory of her childhood, the unexpected death of her father. This tragic event led her to move from Charleston, South Carolina to New York City, to live with her father’s sister. Her move echoes the migration of her aunt, a former sharecropper, and the Great Migration of millions of Black Americans from the South to cities in the East, Midwest and West. Mary’s crime is non-violent, but her path to incarceration reveals multiple traumas rooted in America’s violent, racist history. We discuss her struggles with poverty, drug addiction, being forced to grow up too fast, physical abuse and self-esteem. Mary has a deep empathy for her mother’s experience as a sharecropper, how the hardship she survived made it hard for her to show her daughters love.
