Today, I'm joined by Tommy Craig, Senior Managing Director at Hines, and Rick Cook, Founding Partner at COOKFOX. Tommy and Rick are both pioneers of the sustainable architecture movement and have joined forces for the 555 Greenwich and 345 Hudson Street project. As it stands, they're two existing buildings that form an entire block in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan. The goal for 555 Greenwich was to stitch the two buildings together, complete 345 Hudson Street, and face west out towards the Hudson River. The combined buildings are 1.2 million square feet, and as you can imagine, designing that kind of space isn't without its challenges. However, the team at COOKFOX has come up with a way to embrace those constraints and create a thermally active superstructure, the first of its kind in New York City. Rick describes the firm's various efforts to make radical carbon changes and revamp this 100-year-old building to serve the community for the next 10+ decades. We also discuss the importance of mentorship, how their own mentors have impacted their career development, and what they hope to pass on to the next generation of young architects at their respective firms. We touch on the current trends that are making buildings better for the planet and its occupants, and how to balance the quality and speed of construction. Listen in to hear more of our conversation about sustainable and modern living spaces. About the Guests:Tommy Craig is Senior Managing Director and the Co-Head of the New York office of Hines, as well as Head of the Boston office. Hines is an international developer, investor and manager of real estate with nearly 5,000 employees worldwide. He is on the board of the Urban Design Forum, and the Phipps Houses, a non-profit affordable housing developer. Previously, he taught at Columbia Business School.Rick Cook is a Founding Partner at COOKFOX, the New York City based design firm he started in 2003 with Bob Fox. Their work focuses on office, residential, interiors and cultural projects and how the natural environment can intertwine with the built environment. Prior to COOKFOX, he founded and ran his own firm, Richard Cook & Associates for 14 years.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. On this week's episode, I reminisce on the vision of Bob Fox, a radical Catholic priest, who was instrumental in shaping the roots of my early faith. Ignited by my brother Dan, who organized a family Zoom last week, with my siblings and our almost 92 year old Dad, we discussed the impact Bob Fox, our close family friend, had on our lives. Bob's legacy of love, creativity, compassion and courage certainly left a lasting impact on each of us. In the 1960s Bob Fox created 2 innovative, inclusive projects: Summer in the City and Thing in the Spring, bringing together artists, musicians, dancers, people of different races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds to re-vitalize some of New York's burnt out inner city neighborhoods. I gave it a different twist this year and although we didn't organize a collective clean-up, nor do we celebrate Easter religiously, I knew I wanted to gather with my adult children and their partners to share a meal and delight in the vibrancy of Spring. So in honor of Bob, I called our picnic in the park hang, Thing in the Spring! What does your version of Thing in the Spring look like? Mother Earth is ignited with inspiration. Be inspired! Inspire others! May your version of Thing in the Spring be a joy and delight to you and those around you. Enjoy the podcast! Links: “Fox Sight” compiled and edited by Bea McMahon

By: David M. Foster, CFP®, CAP®Hello, listeners, and welcome to the 16th episode of the Gateway Giving Podcast! My guest today is Maxine Clark. You may or may not be familiar with her name, but, especially if you are from the St. Louis area, you are almost certainly familiar with her work. She is the founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop.Since she stepped down from her role as Chief Executive Bear in 2013, she has been spending her time using her wealth and influence to improve the lives of others in the St. Louis region, primarily through the foundation she and her husband, Bob Fox, founded in 2004. In particular, right now she is focused on putting the finishing touches on the Delmar Divine; a mixed-use development for social innovators that will provide office space and shared resources for nonprofits, as well as approximately 150 affordable apartments designed for young, diverse professionals.I wanted to have Maxine on the podcast, not only because I wanted to hear more about her work with the Delmar Divine, but also because I am fascinated by how people with significant wealth think about the opportunity and/or responsibility they have to use that wealth to give back to the community that helped create it in the first place. One of my missions in life is to convince people with excess wealth to give more of that wealth away to people who aren't related to them, so I want to know how I can help to replicate Maxine's attitude about philanthropy and the responsibility we all have to one another across our region and our country. As you'll hear in this interview, it's impossible to interact with Maxine and not come away from it feeling more optimistic about the future of St. Louis. This was a delightful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!As always, if you have any questions, requests, or suggestions for people or organizations for me to interview, you can email me at david@gatewaywealthstl.com. No one can talk about the future of offices and workplaces without addressing the fact that the global pandemic of 2020 – Covid-19 - has flipped our world as we knew it upside down. Companies are struggling to determine how they will eventually reopen and rebuild, as well as readjust their thinking about work, and where and how it’s performed. We are beginning to see a slow loosening of regulations and attempts to open back up again - safely and effectively - which is good news. How will this new virus – and this new way of thinking about space optimization and safety – change how we design and function in offices? How will technology and collaboration come together to create a whole new way of thinking about workspace design in general? We went to one of the top voices in this field for answers. Bob Fox possesses more than 30 years of experience, is an active member of the design community, and speaks regularly at industry events focused on the future of the workplace. Covid-19 and the changes put in place because of it will drive future office design and layout. While it’s hard to predict exactly where we will be in one, five, or even ten years from now, these changes will definitely have left an interesting mark on the way that we think about the workplace. In response to Covid-19, Future Offices Summer 2020 will be held as an Online Event on August 4 - 5. The agenda is packed with experts and sessions you’ll love focusing on remote working, changes in space optimization, office sanitation/cleanliness, employee safety and health and more. My guest today is Donna Cribari, former nun, current musician, music educator and composer. I've known Donna since I was a child. She was a part of a vibrant circle of nuns, priests, ex-nuns and ex-priests that influenced my understanding that one could honor spirituality even when one needed to challenge the institution of religion. In the late 60‘s Donna had been a member of the religious order of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in simpler terms, a Marymount nun. She was involved in the progressive changes within the Catholic Church that led to Vatican II. As Donna says “ we thought we were going to change the world, unfortunately the institutional church did not come along with our vision.” She shares what drew her to becoming a nun and what led to her decision to leave the order. She was proud that the nuns she lived with were harborers of Daniel Barrigan, and she is grateful that the nuns put her in the path of music. It was Bob Fox, a Catholic priest, living and working in Spanish Harlem, that connected Donna to my family. She describes who Bob was and the grassroots, inner city organization he created, called ‘Full Circle”. Donna taught music at Marymount College for 35 years! She has been involved with the Arts Council of Westchester and taught or composed music for colleges, semi-professionals and regional theaters. For decades, Donna has kept a ‘day job‘ at Human Development Services of Westchester in Port Chester, NY. She laughs that her day job supports her music habit! No surprise that Donna’s day job is another form of serving humanity; her organization provides case management and residential care for adults recovering from psychiatric illnesses. What pleasure to shine light on this grounded, loving, inspiring woman. Donna, “For all that has been THANKS, for all that will be YES!” Enjoy the podcast! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
This week, I've got another diverse array of guests from Trail Days in Damascus a few weeks ago. While I guess a parade of hikers could have been interviewed, I preferred to go with others associated with the Appalachian Trail, so I've managed to get another interesting mix together. Dan Bedore is hiking a kind of alternative AT, keeping the pioneering spirit of the trail alive by spending large amounts of time totally by himself. He said that he preferred it that way. When I checked his website, bedore.org, I was amazed at the variety of trails that he has completed. For those of you wishing to go a little off the beaten track, Dan's site is a good place to start. You can reach out to Dan at danshike@yahoo.com if you'd like to find out more about his journeys. Next, I spoke with the first of the vendors this week. One of the Jacks, of Jacks R Better, demonstrated the Bear Mountain Bridge Hammock, based upon the design of a suspension bridge. It provides a flat sleeping surface. I was a little doubtful, but it was terrific. Had I seen this in 2014, I may have even considered a hammock. You can find out more about the company at the Jacks R Better website and this video demonstrates the setup of the hammock. Eric Fox, the son of Alison and Bob Fox, hiked the AT a couple of years back. Bob wrote Eric's story for him, in a really interesting family collaboration, called The Endless Trail. Check out the book on Amazon. You can also see more about the book at Bob's website and Facebook page. Click on the appropriate link. Here's a picture of the two of us. Kyle Jeffreys introduced me to a very reasonably priced air pad. The company is Klymit, and I highly recommend their website. I tried out the Static V2. At just over $60, it is a bargain and extremely comfortable. The website will give you far more information, as well as some really excellent deals for somebody putting together a bunch of equipment from one supplier. Once again, click on the link that appeals to you. Moe Lemire is a hiker who wanted to give back. Instead of just talking about it, he joined the NY-NJ Trail Conference, responsible for more than 50 miles of the AT in these two states. If you're from that area, or simply want to see the great work that Moe and his team do, check out their website. Eddie Hinnant was showing us The Packa, his very own invention, at Trail Days. He demonstrated his combination pack cover and jacket with the fervor of a man who knows he has done good work. Let Eddie himself show you in this video. If you want to learn more, go to Eddie's website. Lisa Quigley, representing the Virginia Creeper Trail, told us as much as she could in the few minutes we spoke. If you'd like to learn more, you can see their pretty website or even their Facebook page. Finally, Dave Degler was kind enough to talk to me about the work of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks. I was so impressed with Dave and his charming team, three of whom are hiking the trail this year. If you'd like to learn more about the extensive outreach that they do, visit their website. I hope that you enjoyed meeting some of the people at Trail Days. I'm really glad that I went, and I PROMISE, the audio quality of outdoor recordings will improve if I do this again!! Charlotte Taney, a previous guest, was originally unsure about any concerns that she may have had prior to starting the AT. On reflection, however, it turned out that she had a few for this week's Fear and Loathing on the Appalachian Trail. Attie seems right back into it, so we're both looking longer term than we had in previous weeks. I can't tell you how delighted I am. I also know that I posted this picture a few weeks ago, but I wanted a Trail Days picture to go with the podcast on Facebook and this turns out to be it. One last thing. If you've read any of my three books and you HAVEN'T left a review, please do me a big favor and click on the appropriate link below to take you directly to the review page of that book. Thanks so much. My Appalachian Trial I: Three Weddings and a Sabbatical My Appalachian Trial II: Creaking Geezer, Hidden Flagon Hiking the Appalachian Trail is Easy: Especially if You've Never Hiked Before. By the way, remember that this last book is free at my author's website, though I won't be in the least bit offended if you want to pay me $2.99 for it!!

Seen the awesome animated short COIN? It's baller...friggin baller. It's a visual treat and so well done. This week we chat with it's creator CHRIS BURNS of Exit 73 Studios. Along withe Chris is his team member Bob Fox. Both guys runs Exit 73 and worked on COIN. One of the awesome things about this short is how Chris said he focused on animating the energy he had built up and from there he created a story around that. A really awesome way to create a short film if you ask us. Have a listen if you want to get all inspired with animation goodness!Check out Exit 73 Studios HEREExit 73 Studios Twitter Exit 73 Studios Facebook

The most entertaining weight loss and fitness show on radio." Please click on the POD button to listen to the latest Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy radio show. On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about cheerleading and dance fitness from the folks at Cheeracise. They have dvds and a website that teaches girls how to cheer like a pro cheerleader and also gives exercise dvd lovers a change of pace from their same old boring exercise routines with hot new cheerleader dance and fitness moves. We talked to Todd Regenbogen the founder of Cheeracise and one of the original Cheeracise girls Kathlyne. Todd shared how they use a lot of plyometric exercises in their videos and Kathlyne shared some killer cheerleading stories. Go to their website www.cheeracise.com for more. Next up was Celebrity Fit Club hypnotherapist Marisa Peer calling in from England. On the show which airs on VH1, she did her best to keep all those celebrities on the straight and narrow using hypnosis and lots of nurturing. And that hot British accent didn't hurt either. She shared lots of weight loss tips for our listeners like the importance of changing the language you use. For instance don't say you want to lose weight! When you use phrases like that your mind spends a lot of time and energy helping you get things you lost back. Marisa thinks that is partially the reason why diets don't work. In addition to being too restrictive they have you focusing on the wrong things. Instead try thinking about how you have a super fast metabolism. You have to listen to the rest to get all her great tips. Marisa Peer also has a new book called "Think Yourself Thin Forever." Her website features a lot of resources for people who want assistance with: relaxation, weight control, self confidence, self esteem, perfect pregnancy, conception, younger skin and lots more. She was a great guest and you should definitely check out her website www.marisapeer.com. Our last guest was old friend Bob Fox from Speed Stacks. He wanted to let our listeners know that the 2007 WSSA World Sport Stacking Championships will be held April 14-15 in Denver. Once again ESPN will be televising this great event. Go to Bob's website www.speedstacks.com for more info about sport stacking in general as well as links to the Championship event coming up. The Doctor is really getting into his fitness tips now. He has stopped recycling old weight loss tips and is somehow coming up with new helpful weight control material. So here is another installment of ...Dr Fitness' "Things You Can Do Today" To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness' secrets...Number 1, use props and smaller plates in order to really visualize what a proper portion size looks like. For example the meat portion of your meal should be no bigger than a deck of cards. Number 2, When you are eating...concentrate on your food, bite by bite. Eating slowly and chewing deliberately will help you feel full faster. And Number 3, listen to your body. Pay attention for cues that you are full. And when you feel full - stop eating. Also don't eat if you are feeling full to begin with. There were a couple more tips from Dr. Fitness, but you'll have to listen to the podcast or go to his blog to get the rest. No Kathie this week. The doctor was bumming out that the studio smelled like me and my coffee instead of Kathie. Remember she is one of the top feet and legs model's out there. Be sure to check out Kathie's website www.getkathie.com. Also check her out on www.RealSavvyMoms.com. Also don't forget to check out Dr. Fitness on Huntsville, AL TV. "The funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet." Please click on the POD button to listen to the latest Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy show. On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about two of the hottest gifts for the fitness lover or the weight loss wannabe in your family. First we had on Patrick Cioffi, Jr from Bio Trainer. Bio Trainer is the new device by Premier Products that will make pedometers obsolete. You see Bio Trainer tracks all your physical activities and then calculates how many calories you burned. Each day you can use their online service and actually know if you gained or lost weight that day. Pretty amazing stuff. Denise Austin has signed on as their official spokesperson so you know it's good. Forget joining a gym this January, buy this product instead and save yourself a fortune. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy listeners save even more. Just type in the promo code Dr Fitness on the order form and you save big bucks. Bio Trainer is having a special this Holiday season - if you sign up for a year of the online service for $100 they will throw in a free BioTrainer. That saves you about 50 bucks, right there. Check them out at www.biotrainerusa.com We also had on Bob Fox the president of Speed Stacks. Speed Stacks is the must have gift for your kid this holiday season. Forget about Playstation 3 or Nintendo Wii, get your kid a set of Speed Stacks and they will love it. The Fat Guys kid has stopped playing with his video game and plays with his Speed Stacks almost everyday. This is a sport that the whole family can play together. It's easy to learn and very addicting. The object is to take the Speed Stack cups and stack 3 pyramids with them then immediately unstack them. You have to do this as fast as you can without knocking them over. Sounds easy but when you have the pressure of the ticking clock things get interesting. Go to www.Youtube.com and search for "sport stacking" or "speed stacks" and you will be blown away at how fast these kids can do this. The sport is called Sport Stacking, it is catching on all over the world, it is even in PE classes around the country and the World Championships have been broadcasted on ESPN. Go to Bob's website www.SpeedStacks.com and check them out. Dr. Fitness had some really good tips about how to Stick to your New Year's Resolution this January. We didn't get to all of them, but here a few of Dr. Fitness' tips...Number 1, make your goal a top 3 non-negotiable goal. Number 2, make it fun, and tell lots of people about your goal. And Number 3, get a partner to watch your back. They will be there to get you back on your program when you get frustrated or lose interest. There were a lot more detail from Dr. Fitness, so you will have to listen to the show to find out all the rest of these great tips. And I'm sure he'll post all the tips on his blog, even the ones we didn't get to tonight. Another highlight of this show was Fat Guy talking about his new website www.GymsAreARipOff.com the Fat Guy thinks that gyms prey upon sedentary people and basically take their money knowing full well that they will stop going to the gym in a matter of weeks. So check out the Fat Guys "Gyms Are A Rip Off" blog and submit your gym horror story. It seems that people are frustrated by the broken promises their gym gave them when they joined and also they are usually disappointed when their hometown gym gets bought out by a large national corporate chain. Service usually goes downhill fast. Also don't forget to check out Dr. Fitness on Huntsville, AL TV.
