Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish, known to all as just Mamie, was another of the larger-than-life personalities during the Gilded Age. For this episode, Carl is joined by historian and writer Keith Taillon and actor Ashlie Atkinson, who portrays Mamie Fish in HBO's "The Gilded Age", for a look at just who this complicated and fascinating woman really was. If you received an invitation to a party at Mamie Fish's - you went.  Mamie Fish, who had an iron clad family pedigree and enough money to compete with other Gilded Age hostesses, was known as a "fun maker".  While at Mrs. Astor's you may have cemented your role in society, at Mamie's, you just had a really good time.  Her parties bordered on the outrageous, from inviting an elephant as a guest to co-hosting the famous dinner for dogs, some of them adorned with diamond collars.  But who was Mamie Fish - and why do we find her fascinating today?  Historian Kieth Taillon and actor Ashlie Atkinson offer deeply insightful perspectives on this woman who perhaps sought to break out of the role prescribed to her and shake up society.  Mamie Fish, when looked at through a modern lens, was challenging, complicated, conflicted and certainly controversial. But given the Gilded Age's restrictions and gender rules, it's interesting to consider how much she could also be considered a rebel and revolutionary for her time.

If you've watched TV or movies with any regularity over the past 20 years, you've probably seen Ashlie Atkinson. If you've gone to bars with any regularity in Central or South Brooklyn over the past 20 years, you've probably seen Ashlie Atkinson. She may have even poured you a drink. A character actor with an IMDB page about a mile long (and still a frequent local bartender), Atkinson just wrapped the second season of “The Gilded Age,” the HBO … er, Max … show that chronicles the lives, loves and pettiness of ultra rich high society New York at the end of the 19th century. Atkinson plays the party-throwing Mrs. Fish, based on the real-life socialite Mamie Fish, wife of railroad man Stuyvesant Fish.   Brooklyn news and views you can use: bkmag.com Email: hello@bkmag.com Follow along on Facebook: Brooklyn Magazine Twitter: @brooklynmag Instagram: @brooklynmagazine Follow Brian Braiker on Twitter: @slarkpope

In this episode, four seven- and eight-year-old kids ( Evelyn, Ella, Chelsea, and Eliot) join Todd to discuss their best fur-riends: their pets! How do we care for our pets? How do pets make us feel? What do we learn from our pets? They then go on a journey to the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where they help a Qook-a-leekie, Quillion, who has lost their pet Quigley. The role of Quillion is played by Ashlie Atkinson, an American actress who works in movies, television, and theater.  She has a LONG list of credits including Peaches in the Netflix film Juanita, Rochelle Applebaum in the Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street, Connie in the Spike Lee film BlacKkKlansman, and Janice in USA Network's Mr. Robot, and Mamie Fish in HBO's The Gilded Age. Ashlie is also the proud cat parent of two fur-babies, Mookie and Pearl. Four in five of U.S. families with school-age children are estimated to have a pet — and pets can play a big role in children's development, helping them to learn responsible behavior, respect for living things, and the ability to provide comfort, love, and loyalty. The ukulele music and original song, My Furry Friend, in this episode is written and performed by Bill English. Bill is an actor, musician, and voiceover artist based in NYC. Find extras and educator resources at playsparkler.org/podcast.
