Broadway Barakada nurtures Filipino theater performers. Aye Nako, a punk rock band that challenges the norms of its own genre. Two photographers document the Chinese Americans of the Mississippi Delta. Meet Tyson Ho, the pit master of Arrogant Swine.
The best creatives often design from a place of not seeing themselves represented in certain spaces. In the case of Mars Dixon, seven years ago he formed the band Aye Nako because he wanted to see a stage populated with people of color, queer people or even trans people like himself performing punk music that shouts from the margins. The Brooklyn-based group recently put out their third release, Silver Haze. It's a vital collection of spiky, melodic songs where Mars splits guitar and vocal duties with fellow songwriter Jade Payne. Sheena McGrath (drums) and Joe McCann (bass) complete the quartet. [This episode features "Spare Me" and "Sissy" from Silver Haze in their entirety."] Visit Aye Nako online: https://ayenako.bandcamp.com https://twitter.com/aye_nako https://www.instagram.com/aye_nako/?hl=en Back Catalog Suggestion: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/talk-music-talk-with-boice/id942357796? mt=2&i=1000339392617 SUBSCRIBE ON SOUNDCLOUD: https://soundcloud.com/thisisboice TMT APP FOR iPHONE: http://bit.ly/TMTappiOS TMT APP FOR ANDROID: http://bit.ly/TMTappANDROID SUBSCRIBE ON iTUNES: http://bit.ly/TalkMusicTalk SUBSCRIBE ON GOOGLE PLAY: http://bit.ly/TMTgoogleplay Please take a moment to leave a rating and/or review in the store. On today's episode I talk to Jade Payne and Mars Ganito of the indie rock band Aye Nako. Formed in 2010, Aye Nako is a New York-based queer punk band who make dissonant and melodic punk music. In 2013, they self-released their first album Unleash Yourself, and in 2015, Don Giovanni Records released their EP THe Blackest Eye. The album saw the band explore personal themes such as abuse and racism, and it garnered a great deal of critical acclaim, ending up on several "best of" lists including both the New York Times and NPR. They were even voted "Best Garage Band in New York" in the Village Voice that year. Their latest album Silver Haze was also released on Don Giovanni earlier this year. We return from our two month break after our WDEK Variety Fest with a Sizzling Summer Show - SSS show - BAM! Is it still considered alliteration if the words start with the same letter although letter doesnt have the same sound - Sss vs sh? Will you look that up for us? While Christian is away, our special guest host this month is a longtime friend of WDEK; the multi talented (musician, illustrator and writer) Mr. Marcellus Hall! Our first guest is comedian, writer & actress Becky Yamomoto. Find out how she got to NYC and created a successful career here as a standup & actress although her Mom and Dad never go to her shows. Her web series Uninspired is one of Shonali's favorites. Shonali performs a new song yet to be released called The Dream Is Still Alive with Marcellus on harmonica. Our second guest is Mars Ganito, guitar player, singer and one of the leaders of the punk pop indie band Aye Nako. We talk about life on the road, growing up in Arkansas within a large family and his love of country music. Mars has described his band's music as "sad songs about being queer, trans and black," however we don't find them so sad. They make us happy. Reminiscent of the best of early indie rock bands like Superchunk, Helium & Pavement; their sound is ragged, raw and dissonant but also catchy, fresh and original. Special guest co-host Marcellus Hall performs one of his new tunes called Our Devices. WDEK's last guest is Mike DuClos, a brilliant musician who has performed with lots of great bands and musicians Listen and learn about tourbus etiquette and performing with Joan Baez and Dire Straits. Mike is what we call a professional musician. He's even played on Broadway before. He hated that. He's a great storyteller who is known in most circles as being a "wise ass." He agrees. Listen and decide for yourself. Thanks to all of you who support us and listen to our show. We have t-shirts for some of you lucky fools! Email us! And lastly Listen to Aye Nako's Spare Me!

Dive into one of the best records to arrive in 2017 with Aye Nako's 'Silver Haze,' out on Don Giovanni Records. This month: Yes, the mix tapes are officially monthly (at least for now)--this month's Side A is just fast, fun, bullshit-free rocknroll, same as usual, featuring easily my personal favourite Bosom Divine song, along with more from Dirty Mouth, The Knits, Old Neighbors, etc. // As always, tap Now Playing on your iThing for the playlist, and use the Next/Prev. buttons to flip around.// albiesrocknrollmixtapes.tumblr.com// albielovesrocknroll@gmail.com
I'll talk more on Side B! Sporadic rocknroll mix tapes > no rocknroll mix tapes!// As always, tap Now Playing on your iThing for the playlist, and use the Next/Prev. buttons to flip around.// albiesrocknrollmixtapes.tumblr.com// albielovesrocknroll@gmail.com
This... holy shit, where the fuck did I go? Well, I've got another pile of tapes to unload, and the time to do so again; welcome back. This week: Brand new Aye Nako, way old Death by Nostalgia, and more of the usual suspects to kick off a fresh batch of tapes. // More to come soon, and as always, just tap Now Playing on your iThing for the playlist. Also the prev./next buttons for, y'know. // albiesrocknrollmixtapes.tumblr.combr // albielovesrocknroll@gmail.com
