Behind The Metal: Mark Rodriguez on Tampa's Silent Scream and MoreMark shares his story of growing up in Tampa, from his early days as a surf punk attending concerts at the Bayfront Center and Lakeland Civic Center, to discovering the local bay-area music scene at venues like the Ruby's, Sunset Club, and the Brass Mug. He recounts the origins of Silent Scream, including recording three demo cassettes ('Endless Cries', 'Pieces of Reality', and 'Beyond Belief'), playing venues such as the Sunset Club, Brass Mug, Volley Club, Rocket Club, The Ritz, and opening for notable bands like Pantera, Type O Negative, Yngwie Malmsteenheand, the Plasmatics. Richie StottsAs a founding member of shock-rock, punk-metal band, The Plasmatics, guitarist Richie Stotts generated enough notoriety to last 10 lifetimes. He joins us to discuss blowing up cars, smashing TVs, chain-sawing guitars, touring with KISS, merging punk and metal, and that stunt involving chickens that didn't go so well. PS. He's a really nice guy and no one was hurt while recording this episode.Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
In this episode, Chris Czynszak (Decibel Geek Podcast) and me celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of KISS"s most over-the-top albums, Animalize. We also explore a related album also celebrating a 40th anniversary; the first solo album by Wendy O. Williams of The Plasmatics, titled W.O.W. These two albums have more in common that you might think. We'll get into the trivia, the drama, and of course, the music!Who played bass on KISS's Animalize? Which KISS member had to leave the sessions in order to act in a feature film? Who's the future KISS guitarist who ghosted on two Animalize songs? Who is Reginal Van Helsing? The answers to these -- and many other burning questions can be heard on the podcast!Enough hype -- let's get Into The Fire!
A San Antonio-born vocalist, lyricist, and artist, Suzy Bravo has performed in heavy metal, punk, blues, and soul bands. In this episode we strap on the mutton chops like biker Jesus pumped full of amphetamines and look straight up to the heavens with the voice of a demon for a warts ‘n all take on one of the most influential bands of the last fifty years. If you're not familiar with Motörhead, they are best known for the song, Ace of Spades and I have described them in the past as what it would sound like if Chuck Berry was hit by an out of control freight train driven by drunken pirates. While there have been many members over the years, and some were more important than others, there's only really one bloke who matters in the Motörhead story, Lemmy Kilmister.Lemmy wasn't a satanic metal head. But he was certainly anti-religion with songs like, [Don't Need] Religion, Bad Religion and God Was Never on Your Side. This episode also features cameo guest star appearances from Joseph of Nazareth, Ian Kilmister, Santa Claus, Wales, The Beatles, The Cavern Club, Liverpool, Europe, The Kinks, The Rockin Vicars, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Sam Gopal, Escalator, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, The Birds, Hawkwind, Silver Machine, Canada, Bastard, Top of the Pops, BBC, United Artists, On Parole, Phil ‘Philthy Animal' Taylor, ‘Fast' Eddie Clarke, NME, Ted Carroll, Chiswick Records, Mike Tyson, Snaggletooth, the War-Pig, Joe Petagno, Napoleon, Bronze Records, Austin Healy, No Sleep ‘till Hammersmith, Stand By Your Man, Plasmatics, Wendy O. The 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show was the third one form Joshua and Cynn Coburn as the owner of Dissident Cigars. The brand was a part of the Oveja Negra Brands booth since Dissident was resurrected back in 2019. Meanwhile, as Dissident has done the previous two years, the Coburns came into PCA with a limited edition cigar. This year's limited edition is Dissident Plasmatic, a tribute to the late trash-punk rocker Wendy O. Williams and her band the Plasmatics. The whole punk rock theme of the Williams and Plasmatics was a perfect theme with the rebellious nature of the brand. The boys from Let's Get Pairing caught up with brand owner Joshua Coburn. Let's face it. Rock and roll has always been dominated by dudes, but music is full of female trailblazers and trendsetters who rocked our world and left their mark on the industry. We're talking about the soulful blues of Janis Joplin to Joan Jett's punk guitar riffs. Debbie Harry embraced her hotness while leading a band that dipped into as many different types of music as the Clash, while Annie Lennox's androgyny helped make her an advocate for gay people around the world. Tina Turner was a rock star in every sense of the world. The list doesn't stop there. Heart, Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge, the Go-Gos, Garbage, Halestorm, Florence & The Machine, X, the Plasmatics, the Interrupters, and Scandal. They all show that rock and roll is for everyone. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, in honor of the Kate Bush fans who are STILL calling us misogynists for not liking her music, we're throwing a guitar through the glass ceiling by looking at women who rock! So turn up your radio and let's wreck some stereotypes as we celebrate the women who rock. Hear More Check out the episode playlist. Jen B Larson is on the podcast to talk about her new book called “Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983”. “Hit Girls” is the story of local and regional US bands whose legacy would be otherwise lost.Larson dispels the narrative that women are anomalies in rock music. In fact, women have played important roles in every city and every scene all over the country yet few if any know about most of them. The women in this book are now rightfully exalted to cult status. Their achievements are inspiring new generations of women rockers and you'll hear from them in this book, which also features over 100 rare and never-before seen images.Purchase a copy of “Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983” through Bookshop.org HERE Listen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HEREALSO LISTEN TO:The Dummy Club - "Tight Blue Dress"Screaming Sneakers - "Violent Days"The Foams - "Paint Me"The Accident - "Kill The Bee Gees"The Bags - "Survive" & "Babylonian Gorgon"Castration Squad - "A Date With Jack" Visit the Booked On Rock Website HERE Watch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM TIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! Richie Stotts was a founding guitarist of the Plasmatics. Taking inspiration from Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, he sported an enormous mohawk. Richie would also cross dress in various costumes like a nurse uniform, or a french maid dress. He did this In an effort to keep up with his constantly outrageous bandmate Wendy O. Williams. After leaving the Plasmatics in 1984, Richie pursued a solo career with his band King Flux and then went back to school where he eventually earned a graduate degree in Geology from Indiana University. Fun fact, Richie appears in a brief cameo in 9½ Weeks. He is the guy with the blonde mohawk and chainsaw tattoo.
