Last year, Vagabon released her third album, Sorry I Haven't Called, which I've been listening to a lot. So I wanted to revisit an episode that I recorded with her back in 2020, about her breakout song "Water Me Down." The episode also features the voice of Eric Littmann, who co-produced the track. He passed away in June 2021, way too young. Vagabon's new album is dedicated to him. If you haven't heard this episode before, I hope you enjoy it: When Laetitia Tamko started making the second Vagabon album, she really wanted to produce the entire thing on her own. It would be a new sound, and producing was still a relatively new skill to her, but she wanted to tackle it head on, and do it all herself. On this song, though, "Water Me Down," Laetitia actually has a co-producer, Eric Littmann. It's the one exception to her otherwise entirely self-produced album. In this episode, she breaks down how she and Eric made the song, and why it was worth making that exception. For more, visit songexploder.net/vagabon.

This show explores Harlem, one of New York City's most historic and noteworthy places. Co-hosted by special guest, Vita, she joins her mum, Stance's host and founder Chrystal Genesis to highlight some of their favorite places. As residents of the area, they visit a handful of their favorite spots, spanning film, food and nature to uncover what continues to make Harlem one of the most distinctive pockets of NYC. Through independent filmmaking at Maysles Documentary Center, we chat with lead educator Art Jones about their one of a kind cinema space, filmmaking as a creative medium and the importance of community-first programming. At Sugar Hill Creamery we speak with co-founder Petrushka Bazin Larsen about founding Harlem's only family owned ice cream store, the relationship between ice cream and Harlem's community, and Vita gets to taste test a few of their seasonal flavors. Stance connects with The Brotherhood Sister Sol, a social justice organization empowering young people of color through community and environmental change. Chrystal and Vita visit their Green Youth Market and meet with senior manager, Nando Rodriguez, to find out how urban farming enriches the Harlem community. We end with music from New Yorker, Cameroonian American musician and songwriter, Vagabon, on her new record Sorry I Haven't Called exploring joy after grief. All music used in this podcast is from Vagabon's new album Sorry I Haven't Called. With thanks to Nonesuch Records. This show was producer Zara Martin. Laetitia Tamko - the multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer who records and performs as Vagabon - joins Carmel Holt to discuss her newest album, Sorry I Haven't Called, how grief and love and heartbreak informed the process in a somewhat surprising way, and three albums in, discovering how much she enjoys collaborating after years of doing everything on her own.
Vagabon is an artist based in New York City. On her latest record, 'Sorry I Haven't Called', she weaves together stories of escapism through dance, letting someone go, & absorbing life's lessons. The result is a multilayered-yet-raw look into her psyche, that simultaneously feels universal & communal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Laetitia Tamko's speaking voice is as sultry and instantly soothing as her singing voice, and that's saying something. Connecting with me via Zoom from Paris, where she was touring with Arlo Parks, the artist who makes music as Vagabon greeted WNXP's Celia Gregory smiling, seated in the borrowed bedroom of a friend's child. It was just days after the release of her third LP Sorry I Haven't Called, an album she calls “a miracle” to have even been made. It's not a record about grief – in fact it's quite whimsical, sassy, sexy – but most of these songs were born out of the chosen solitude she afforded herself to mourn the loss of a dear friend and musical collaborator, Eric Littman, back in 2021. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians with interesting backgrounds: one in computer engineering, the other in stand-up comedy. It's Vagabon and Jaboukie. Vagabon, aka New Yorker Lætitia Tamko, just released her third album under the name, and as you'll hear in this chat, it had been four years since her last. But Sorry I Haven't Called was worth the wait, and another cool stylistic leap. Tamko's first album, Infinite Worlds, felt like a fresh take on indie-rock; her second, a self-titled record from 2019, dipped more into more varied electronic pop. But Sorry I Haven't Called, which was partly produced by former Vampire Weekend guy Rostam, takes things even a step further, with an eye toward something even bigger and bolder. And even though the songs were inspired by a dark time in Tamko's life, they turned out incredibly buoyant and upbeat. Check out “Lexicon” right here. Jaboukie Young-White is best known as a stand-up comic, writer, and actor: You may have experienced his jokes on Big Mouth, or seen him as a correspondent on The Daily Show or acting in Only Murders in the Building. If you're a fan of this podcast, you may have heard him in conversation with Jonathan Pierce of the Drums a couple years back. But in the past couple of years, Jaboukie has set his last name aside and worked hard on his debut album, which just came out. It's called all who can't hear must feel, and it's an incredibly diverse set of songs that touches on a bunch of genres—rock, hyperpop, jungle—without sounding beholden to any one in particular. Jaboukie played almost every note of every instrument on the record, and as you'll hear, he spent a lot of time getting it just right. Check out “Cranberry Sauce” right here. In this chat, Jaboukie and Vagabon talk about how creating is like molting, about how music can feel more timeless than comedy, about “domming” your audience, and about how Janet Jackson is MOTHER. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Vagabon and Jaboukie for chatting. Vagabon released her third album, 'Sorry I Haven't Called,' on September 15th. It's her most upbeat, produced, and poppy album to date. It was written following the passing of Vagabon's dear friend and collaborator, Eric Littmann. Vagabon talks with Emily Fox about Eric Littman's impact on her, making upbeat music through grief, and retreating to Germany for a mental reset while she made this album. “I felt tremendous guilt about the music that was coming out of me in this time. I fully thought I would make a somber record. I had all these things that I wanted to say but it turned out I didn't want to say those things on songs. I was having those conversations in my life . . . and so the music I was making ended up being kind of opposite from the grief I was living in. It really was a form of escapism for me and an honor to Eric's life because he lived so vibrantly,” Vagabon says. Darum hier etwas Archivmaterial: * Sounds! Hey, everybody! This cast I look at my favorite songs from May and June of this year, including new tunes by Kesha, Charley Crockett, Youth Lagoon, Packs, Bar Italia and Vagabon. Also, new commercials for a new hip-hop country song about big cities and a new Broadway musical about a nuclear doll. [Also, just a note: there is nothing funny about the atomic bombings that took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki...or the tests in New Mexico that sent nuclear fallout across much of the U.S. So, I mean no harm--I apologize to anyone who may be offended. So, why did I make it. I don't know. I think I was making fun of the trend of seeing "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie" on the same day...]Also, an original song about 'blazin.'Enjoy! or don't.Support the show

i’ve been thinking a lot about storytelling. i feel like i’ve been telling stories in one form or another forever. i mean, we all do. we play make-believe as kids but i do the exact same thing now. maybe we just call it “banter” or something instead. but we riff off each other and create worlds and fantasy. i think that’s so fun, and when you find someone you immediately banter with well, it’s just such a cool connection. or we run through scenarios in our heads but we call it “anxiety” and typically keep these stories to ourselves.so many things to share about storytelling but one thing i think is so interesting is that i think my interest in telling stories has been strengthened and nurtured in therapy. when you talk to your therapist you are telling them your story. and if you’re doing it like me, every small story comes with additional context and tangents and reflection and that’s even before i give them a chance to respond. and then further reflecting on particular moments and themes allows me to connect them to other moments and themes and all of a sudden you find yourself trapped in this spider web of a life story. actually, no - i’m the spider, and i’m not trapped at all. i bounce around carefully from thread to thread, weaving new lines, rewriting old memories, eating flies.and then every time you transition to a new therapist it’s a chance to tell your entire story over again. and you’re so excited about that part of it. maybe too earnest. you weave more bits and pieces of story together and each time you think you have a better understanding of who and why you are. sometimes i’m concerned that i’m overconfident in the work that i’ve done and my ability to communicate it. i’m wondering about the performance of it all. is the story i tell about me actually me right now or a me i aspire to? can it be both? believing that someday i could write a memoir seems laughable but i want to. would you read it? it’ll be so embarrassing but it feels necessary to share it all.i’m just a few weeks into a break from formal therapy right now, but i’m still storytelling. recently it’s been with friends. in the actual real friend world. which i’m enjoying. and opening up in these spaces feels like it means something totally different than it had in therapy. i’m grateful to therapy for helping me explore my own stories but right now i’m more excited about connections and mashups and crossover episodes with friends. excited about friend stories colliding with my own and for the impact to be meaningful for them and for me.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Barry “Posh Club” Barry02:52 Hectorine “Motel Song” Hectorine07:21 Screaming Females “Zoo Of Death” Singles Too10:51 Amy O “Blueberries” Shell13:35 Empath “Drunken Angel” Drunken Angel / The Other Side16:25 Anna Meredith “Killjoy” FIBS20:07 Brave Radar “Face The Light” Brave Radar in… It’s Honey’s World21:19 Warp “Abracadabra” Traffic Control23:45 Great Grandpa “English Garden” Four of Arrows26:22 Black Marble “Shoulder” Bigger Than Life30:31 Brazilian Wax “Unicorn” Still Rippin’33:46 Dress Forms “places” we don’t dig guitars35:27 Dry Cleaning “Sit Down Meal” Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP39:06 Olivia’s World “SuperValu” Olivia’s World42:06 Mikal Cronin “Apathy” Mikal Cronin44:43 tombo crush “gaze aversion” text me when you get home45:52 Noera “FMLA” Pearls48:51 Walrus “Cool to Who” Cool to Who53:08 hanu vu “Order” Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway55:43 TOPS “Echo of Dawn” Echo of Dawn / Seven Minutes57:53 yipee! “The Mall of America, MN” The Cheese Store, MO/The Mall of America, MN59:52 Eyelash “Eating Art” Demo62:10 Macho Blush “Healing Artist” User Guide64:55 Mikayla McVey “roommates” Desert Companion67:48 Vagabon “Water Me Down” Vagabon

The story of the famous Vagabon leather maker, that traveled 365 miles from the Hudson river to the Connecticut river regularly during the 1800's is a story filled with mystery. The man's skin so cold from the winters that even his skin looked like leather. It said his final resting place was in Sparta cemetery in Ossining New York. But when his grave was exhumed by an archaeologists nothing was found. Yet, reports of paranormal activity are high in Sparta cemetery. On this episode I give a historical background of the letherman. A mysterious story in Connecticut and Westchester Lore. And try to give the connection between him and the paranormal activity at Ossining's Sparta Cemetery. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Welco ____... HEYYYY IT'S THE LUNAR GODDASS! Good morning, I hope you are having a wonderful day withing the Scheming Mind Palace. My True Party King always introduced me last so I'm butting in at the start so you understand that I, a She/WOW, will no longer be sidelined! ... Time for me to take some laughing gas before I surrender it all to the true Lunar Goddess, Hekate. In this episode, we are also joined by Flash Harry, Azula, and Vagabon as we each offer our addictions to the Holy Spirit, Hekate. She has many names and faces but what remains consistent is her domain over liminality. Just as Hekate guided Persephone out of the Underworld, we ask for the Mind Palace to be relocated from NYC to somewhere South. So join us in this ceremony with candle burning, language learning, and Tarot Card discerning. I hope that our ceremony with Hekate inspires you to offer your own addictions if you feel stuck at a Crossroads.
L'Rain, Keyon Harrold, Hinako Omori and Sinkane discuss not getting stuck on the details, the visceral versus the cerebral, why there's nothing like those vibrations in the room where you play, and why writing music is like walking to the shops. L'Rain is an experimental multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist from New York, who makes music that is an intoxicating blend of R&B, free jazz, noise music, and orchestral pop. She was also once in an Iron Maiden covers band. Jazz trumpeter, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Keyon Harrold was born into a musical family of 17 children. He's provided instrumentation for Beyonce, 50 Cent, Jay Z, former Music Life guest Gregory Porter and Mary J Blige, as well as being a trumpet stunt double in the film Miles Ahead. Hinako Omori is a musician and producer with a love for synthesisers who was born in Yokohoma, Japan, and is now based in London. She's worked with artists including Kae Tempest, EOB, and Georgia. You may recognise our host Sinkane's voice, as the Sudanese-American multi-instrumentalist and singer has previously hosted the Music Life show, chatting to the likes of David Byrne, St Vincent, Cautious Clay, Emel Mathlouthi and Vagabon.
Cat and Pat are joined this week by special guest Laetitia Tamko (Vagabon). They discuss hypnotism, early Taylor swift chords, the key to being desirable, and more.Seek Treatment is executive produced by Catherine Cohen, Pat Regan, and Allison Bresnick. This episode is sponsored by:Green Chef (greenchef.com/seektreatment130 PROMO CODE: seektreatment130Girlfriend Collective (girlfriend.com/seektreatment)
