What the heck is Lent?! After being introduced to it through talkback radio, Petra decided to go in search of what Lent is all about. If you're curious about what this time of the year is all about, by all means come along! In this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, Petra's first stop was to talk to the pride of Tairua, Strahan Coleman. You've likely heard Strahan on the show before, and this time he helped to unpack why Lent is about more that just fasting or "behaviour modification". Find Strahan's project Commoners Communion and his book 'Thirsting' here After a reflection on communion, and some waiata/songs, Petra also catches up with Producer Sam who provides an update on part of his life that seems to be aligning with the themes of Lent. Haere mai! Music: Emotional Intelligence by Chaos in the CBD (played at the end of the intro) Frolic by Jake Xerxes Fussel (played to end Strahan's interview) Slowdown by Brad Stank Hunger by Florence and the Machine (played during communion) Les Petits Gris by Khruangbin (played during the candle reflection) Sinnerman by Nina Simone Zionsville by Khruangbin (played at the end of Sam's conversation Interlude by Julie Byrne (played during the benediction)
When was the last time you asked yourself what your spirituality/faith is for? On this episode, Petra risks rattling a few cages with a message that doesn't sit alongside what wider society often tells us. Joining Petra to explore the purpose of faith is Arch-Bishop Justin Duckworth and Kate Hall (@ethicallykate on Insta). Petra and Justin unpack their discussion that they had on Aotea/Great Barrier Island over summer. If you've been wondering what this conversation that we've been teasing since the start of the year is, here you go! Producer Sam went looking for someone who puts their words into actions, and found Kate Hall, who goes by @ethicallykate online. Petra and Kate talk about what it looks like to let your values influence your actions, and how this can actually be super life-giving! Haere mai! Music: Anchin Kfu Ayinkash by Hailu Mergia and the Dahlak Band (used to end Justin's interview) Alright by Kendrick Lamar Stormy by Gabor Szabo (played during communion) Summer's End by Julie Byrne (played during the candle reflection) Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong by Gene Harris (played to end Kate's interview) No Ordinary Life by Matt Corby Interlude by Julie Byrne (played during the benediction) The sacred text in this epsiode is Twenty-One Elephants by Scottie Reeve (pages 36-37)
"I always like starting with something out of context..." He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche! His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. Between touring with Julie Byrne, collaborating with Raf Rundell - more on that to come soon pop pickers - and working on a new solo record featuring multiple vocalists, Tom's not a 'sit still' kind of guy. Just how we like it. Get it on, let's go... read more below. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/tom-sharkett-the-altered-currents-mix/ @tomsharkett @whlung

Petra and Stephen look at finding wonder largely through the lens of creativity, but no matter how creative you're feeling today, this episode is a calm, wonder-chasing sanctuary for you. For those of you who want to delve deeper into Petra and Stephen's conversation, an extended cut will appear in the Makers & Mystics podcast feed on November 13th. On this week's Talkhouse episode we've got a pair of talented musicians in a chummy chat about making songs and making a life while making songs. It's Melina Duterte, aka. Jay Som, and Pascal Stevenson, aka. Fashion Club. Stevenson just released the second Fashion Club album, A Love You Cannot Shake, but it's different enough than the first that it almost feels like a debut. That surely has something to do with the fact that it's the first Fashion Club music since Stevenson's gender transition; there's a genre freedom that wasn't as evident on the first one, which felt a bit closer to Stevenson's indie-leaning band Moaning. A Love You Cannot Shake clearly honors big pop music but it frequently swerves before giving into any obvious trappings. She found some fantastic guests to add to the sideways fun, too, including Talkhouse Podcast alumni Perfume Genius and Julie Byrne as well as the other half of today's conversation, Jay Som. Now Jay Som made a splash with her first couple of bedroom-pop albums in 2015 and 2016, and though she hasn't released a new album since 2019's fantastic Anak Ko, she's been busy nonetheless, both starting some new projects, producing for other musicians, and playing bass for the indie-rock supergroup Boygenius. She's been working on new material of her own as well, and she had a song on the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed movie I Saw the TV Glow alongside like-minded artists like Caroline Polachek and The Weather Station. And of course there's her contribution to the Fashion Club record, “Ghost.” Check out that song right here. In this lively conversation, Stevenson and Duterte chat about songwriting, including Stevenson's tendency to start with the biggest parts and Duterte's opinion on what constitutes a “treat” while you're producing. They tell each other toward the end of the conversation which pop star they'd most like to write for, and we learn that Stevenson's specialty is what she calls “fucked-up ballads.” Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:20 – Start of the chat 4:45 – On Fashion Club's album, A Love You Cannot Shake 9:20 – Melina loves Pascal's record 13:30 – Contrasting approaches to songwriting 16:36 – "Everyone's a little different when it comes to what I call 'treats'" 31:36 – "Do you think it's easier now to become a producer?" Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Pascal Stevenson and Melina Duterte for chatting. What do you do to feel most connected with God? One way that many of us grew up with is the idea of 'quiet time' where you physically sit still and quiet. While there is still value in this practice (just ask friend of the show Strahan Coleman), this is something that many struggled with growing up and, in actual fact, there are many ways to connect with God. Join Petra Bagust in this special episode recorded live in the Coromadel at the Love It Media staff retreat. Petra first talks to senior producer, Josh Couch, who breaks down the nine different paths of connection as identified by Gary Thomas in his book Sacred Pathways. After some time to think, Petra then hears from different members of the Love It Media staff team, who offer a mix of funny and poignant stories about the different ways they feel connected to God. To wrap it all up, Sunday Sanctuary's very own Rev Frank Ritchie leads communion (which you're welcome to join in with from home) and Petra finishes off with another benediction from Kate Bowler and Jessica Ritchie. Join us! Sacred Texts: Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas C. S. Lewis quote from his book Miracles Music: Pine Trees by Mary Lattimore (played at end of Josh's interview) Make that Connection by Tom Petty Frolic by Jake Xerxes Fussell (played during the time for contemplation) Blue in Green by Miles Davis (played during communion) Collect for Midday by The Fuzzy Robes Summer's End by Julie Byrne (played to end the episode)
What communities are you part of? What does being involved in community mean for your life? Those are two of the core questions in this episode of Sunday Sanctuary. Whether we see ourselves as being community members or not, the different groups we are part of influence how we live our lives. Community connections lead to both of the interviews for this episode. First up, Petra sat down to talk with Dr Hirini Kaa, principal of Tāmaki Makaurau's St John's Theological College. Dr Kaa shared his views on what community means to him as a Māori man and how mana plays a role. Petra's second conversation is with Jenny Duckworth, someone who has lived in several communities all with a very intentional focus on serving their neighbours. This episode also sees Producer Sam head back to Cornwall Park here in Auckland to ask unsuspecting strangers about their stories of community. He also tries to bring a theme song to the episode, with mixed success..... Haere mai! Re-enchantment, de-magification, however you want to put it, there are many people who are looking to embrace the wilder side of life and faith. Good friend of the show Rev Frank Ritchie is currently on a journey to re-enchant his life and so joins Petra to co-host this episode. In this episode Petra talks to Dr Belle Tindall, co-host of the Re-enchanting podcast about where this whole idea of re-enchantment comes from. Next, Petra catches up with an old friend, Erin Morales Ruka, who lives a more enchanted life for an insight into what that looks like. Haere mai! There is a special sort of unsettled feeling reserved for moving to a new place, even if it's just across town. The destabilisation that so often comes with a new locale can linger for a while as we re-establish where home is for us. Although, sometimes the place we consider home stays the same while we move. Either way, this tricky feeling can be a tough one to navigate. Come on a journey with your host Petra Bagust, as she talks to producer Josh about his childhood, which was spent between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Thailand. Hear one man's story of his father's move from Taiwan to the USA in the '60s, and finally, our Community Life segment is released out into the wild, as producer Sam heads to Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland's Cornwall Park! To mark season 22 of Other Voices, which begins on RTÉ 2 and RTÉ Player on February 29, one of the hottest bands in the country, Gurriers, who played St James' Church in Dingle for the show in December, and host Maykay join the TPOE podcast. Gurriers started in January 2020 and have released a string of excellent singes since, including latest track 'Des Goblin'. Frontman Dan Hoff talks about how they got started, feeling inspired - for good or bad - by social media, playing SXSW in March, what it's like to be part of the hype cycle, and their plans for the rest of the year. A little bonus in the middle of the show: The photographer Rich Gilligan heads to Other Voices every year. He talks about why it's so special to shoot and some of the memorable acts he's experienced in Dingle over the years. Then Fight Like Apes frontwoman Maykay looks back to the Dublin music scene of the mid-00s and how they fitted in, talking FLApes rise, a little about the fall, and their reunion at the Olympia Theatre in 2023. They're returning for a final show there on April 6, 2024 - tickets are running low, FYI. Maykay also talks her solo plans and what it's like hanging out with fellow Other Voices hosts Huw Stephens and Annie Mac in Dingle. The six-part season 22 of Other Voices will showcase some of the most thrilling Irish and international artists on the music scene; with exclusive intimate performances by Griff, Kae Tempest, The Murder Capital, Villagers, BC Camplight, Catrin Finch & Aoife Ní Bhriain, CMAT, ØXN, Gurriers, Mick Flannery, Julie Byrne, The Joy, KhakiKid, Niamh Bury, Qbanaa and Lucy McWilliams.

Muzycznego podcastu Filmawki. This week on Rational Security, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“You'll Shoot Your Five Eyes Out with a Bibi Gun.” From Ukraine to Gaza, some of the biggest controversies surrounding U.S. foreign policy hinge on the assistance—including weapons and intelligence—that the United States provides to its allies. What makes these relationships so complicated? “The Sock-It Docket.” Late last week, Special Counsel Jack Smith executed a power move, bringing former President Trump's appeal of the denial of his claim of absolute presidential immunity directly to the Supreme Court — through what is often called the “rocket docket”—and citing precedents from the Nixon era suggesting the Supreme Court should resolve the issue within weeks. What does this move tell us—and how likely is Smith to win his case?“Netanya-who?” President Biden's bear hug of the Israeli prime minister may be loosening, as he has reportedly told donors that Netanyahu must go if Israel is to retain international support. How serious a move is this? And what might it mean for the conflict in Gaza? For object lessons, Quinta continued to show off her bookshelf by recommending Jeff Horwitz's “Broken Code.” Scott flagged for listeners that “White Christmas” is, in fact, the best holiday movie and no one should try to argue otherwise. And Tyler endorsed Julie Byrne's album from earlier this year, “The Greater Wings.”Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hildur Maral Hamíðsdóttir fjallar um nýja plötu bandarísku indí-kassagítarsöngkonunnar Julie Byrne, The Greatest Wing. Plötu sem er kláruð í skugga fráfalls hennar helsta samstarfsmanns og kærasta Erics Littman.

I haven't done a quiet indie songs mix since this time last year. This one started when I heard the latest Peter Gabriel track, Love Can Heal, which I adore. And the timing is good as I'll be seeing him in concert on Oct. 2nd. I've heard that in his live show he plays a lot of the new tracks he's been releasing monthly. Several months ago that would have given me pause because I didn't much care for the first few new tracks. But they have been getting better and better with each new song. The rest of the mix is just what it says it is - a collection of quiet indie tracks, all of them released in 2023. It includes some old faves like Neil Young, Kevin Morby, Slowdive, & Julie Byrne along with new to me artists like Scott Orr, The Finks, This Is The Kit, & Jörgen Kjellgren. Cheers! Welcome to Episode 37 of This is Not Happening. An Album of the Month Podcast where in Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'? This month, we get pretty emotional about Julie Byrne's latest album 'The Greater Wings' in Part 1. In Part 2, Spin it or Bin it theme is 'no human sounds'. All will be explained ...Part 1 | Julie Byrne | The Greater WingsIt's Joey's choice this month and for the 2nd time in This is Not Happening history he chooses a beautiful album by Julie Byrne. We're in the indie-folk-ambience hinterlands from a stylist perspective. From an emotional perspective we're right at the intersection of beauty, grief, loss, hope and reflection. We talk about what this album is, how there's more than one way to experience it, our favourite tracks and what it means to us.Visit Julie Byrne's website hereListen to this stunning album hereBuy some of Julie's stuff hereHere are a few links for some background; The Metacritic page for 'The Greater Wings'Marty's Music Talk interview with Julie is here Another interview with Julie, this time on KEXP PodcastsPart 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'No Human Sounds'This one was way harder than it sounded at first. The theme this month is 'No Human Sounds'. We started with no vocals, then decided no human sounds at all, then we added that it couldn't be 'dance music'. Joey suggested we define 'dance music', he got laughed at ... then we got into an argument about all of Guys choices being dance music. We all chose a track that fits the theme then ask the others a simple question 'spin it or bin it?'Guy chose Vision of Self by Rival ConsolesNolan chose Time is the Enemy by QuanticJoey chose Transitions by Beastie BoysDavid chose Speed of Life by David BowieIn order to select our tracks we shortlist 4 each and create a 16 track playlist that can be found here.*** Enjoy the Episode ***We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

After six years away, New York-based singer-songwriter Julie Byrne returns with a new album, 'The Greater Wings.' The time away represented a sea change in her life as well as an opportunity to explore new songs. During the recording of the album, Byrne's creative partner Eric Littman passed away. Byrne finished the album, which she describes as a testament to the depth of chosen family. KEXP's Dusty Henry catches up with Byrne to learn more about the process of writing the record and the stories behind some of the songs.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's guest deejay is Andrew Tasselmyer . I met Andrew through Robert Farrugia, co-founder of Complex Holiday. After Robert guest deejayed on Soundwave (listen to his mix here) I asked him who he thought would share a mix on the show and he suggested Andrew. I listened to some Andrew's many releases and extended an invitation immediately. Andrew is a musician from Baltimore currently living in Philadelphia. He utilizes samplers, field recordings, and lo-fi recording techniques to make textured and tactile sounds. In addition to his solo catalog on labels such as Laaps, Seil Records, Eilean Recs, Constellation Tatsu, Home Normal, and more, he is a member of Hotel Neon, Gray Acres, and Mordançage. Andrew has a new album coming on June 17 called Music for Nonexistent Films on Somewherecold Records. Andrew's mix for today's show has everything I love to hear on Soundwave. However, what surprised me was his inclusion of Julie Byrne's “Wisdom Teeth Song” in his mix. Julie's appearance in his mix isn't incongruous. It feels inevitable. I was so delighted to hear Julie's music in Andrew's mix that I was inspired to put together my own mix, which includes one of Julie's songs. You can listen to that mix here. Andrew has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Dan Haines Cohen, founder of Machine Records. “Music for walking through piles of dead leaves.” For this mix, I was inspired to focus on the specific time and place I was in: the peak of autumn in the northeastern US.I love this time of year when mornings are cold, but not brutally so… just enough to smack you with a jolt of heightened awareness when you step outside. And for some reason, the sunshine feels better when it's filtered through the exploding colors of the leaves. I have no scientific basis for saying this but trust me, it's a fact. It also seems that the calendar has progressed far enough at this point in the year that people start to reflect on months past and look forward to the new year ahead. Everyone feels a little more thoughtful, I suppose. For this mix, I chose songs that could accompany someone on a wooded walk through the forest (or a nap in bed, whatever), with lots of textural analog sounds like hissing tape and shaky vibrato. The idea is that cracking leaves and snapping twigs can enhance the character of these recordings, which all feature a healthy dose of guitar (acoustic and electric), lo-fi beats and rhythms, and nostalgic timbres. I would encourage listening while walking and using earbuds/headpho --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

Tickets on sale now! “I’ve been thinking of life as one big roleplaying game,” Johanna Warren offers when asked why she chose to title her new album after a Dungeons & Dragons reference. “There’s chance, there’s choice, and there’s alignment—what forces in the universe do I choose to align myself with?” Chaotic Good is Warren’s fifth full-length album and first for Wax Nine/Carpark Records. It represents a moment of rupture in the singer-songwriter’s career as she transitions away from the quiet, folk-adjacent work that defined her early solo albums with a bold statement piece that demonstrates the breadth of her ambition. Here, Warren flits between crushing admissions set to spare piano solos and muscular declarations of independence that have more in common with grunge acts of bygone years than anything we’ve heard from Warren in the past. “The last few years I’ve had an urge to change my name, or create some alter-ego,” she says. “But I’ve come to realize that ‘Johanna’ is already just a character. We think we know who we are based on what’s already happened, but we’re allowed to make new choices.” The oceanic, soothing single “Bed of Nails” illustrates that realization perfectly when Warren sings: “I tried a little bit too hard to be myself/It turned me into something else.” Recording Chaotic Good was an exercise in self-reinvention. Warren decided to produce the album on her own, borrowing recording equipment from a friend to do much of the preliminary tracking alone in a garage. She enlisted a few key collaborators to fully enliven her vision, most notably former Sticklips bandmates Chris St. Hilaire and Jim Bertini. On the raucously resilient “Part of It,” Warren is joined by her musical brethren as she addresses a noncommittal narcissist and—a trademark of Warren’s work—the narrator’s complicity in her own suffering: “Don’t look at me like I’m the one holding you back/and I won’t look at you like you have something I lack.” Adding to the album’s dynamism is the fact that it took shape over the course of four years in studios across the United States while Warren was touring her most recent albums Gemini I and II. Warren uses words like “patchwork” and “scrapbook” to describe Chaotic Good; it is a collection of sonic snapshots that transport her to specific places in time with each listen. “This album is about learning how to be with myself after a lifetime of codependent relationships,” Warren says. You can hear that especially well on “Twisted,” which finds her confronting a former lover, and ultimately, letting them go. “I’m a warrior, but I give up,” Warren howls, the surrounding production warping and distorting as her raw vocal crests to an acidic scream. Though her lyrics are resigned, her delivery is anything but. It is a moment of total abandon, when the multitudinous aspects of a personality coalesce to form something at once dazzling and monstrous. “Chaotic Good is a metamorphosis,” Warren says. “It’s my phoenix moment. Everything I’ve done before was just building the funeral pyre.” Johanna Warren is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who began her career as a singer/songwriter in the Brooklyn-based psych folk band Sticklips. The group released two albums before disbanding in 2012, and after a stint performing backup vocals for Iron & Wine, Warren self-released her debut solo album, Fates, in 2013. The album prompted her to tour nationally under her own name, and since then, she’s led a nomadic existence, calling cities across the United States home for short periods of time. Over the past few years, Warren has toured alongside Mitski, Julie Byrne, and Marissa Nadler, but a life on the road hasn’t slowed her output. In 2015, she released her sophomore album nūmūn to acclaim, propelling her to the forefront of artists to watch in the second half of the decade. Warren dedicated the spellbinding collection of acoustically-driven songs to the phases of the moon and to the divine feminine — forces of great power and consequence that are all-too often overlooked. The following year, Warren announced a twin set of albums released on her own label Spirit House, which promoted a radically inclusive, artist-friendly ethos. Each of the songs on Gemini I corresponds with a song on Gemini II, which debuted later, in 2018. The two albums are in conversation with one another, offering up a character sketch of dueling personalities vying for acceptance. To contrast nūmūn, which was rendered using a simple palate of acoustic instruments, the arrangements on Gemini I and II integrated a wide array of instrumentation and more palpable percussion, furnished with help from a small cohort of Warren’s longtime collaborators. Following the release of Gemini II, Warren embarked on her extensive Plant Medicine Tour, during which she invited local herbalists, farmers, and activists to come and share resources with attendees about alternative remedies. In the spare moments between tour stops, Warren recorded her latest album in studios across the United States. Entirely self-produced, Chaotic Good is Warren’s first album for Wax Nine/Carpark and it is her boldest to date, finding her in a state of transition as she introduces listeners to a new phase of her artistry. On this week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, another of the incredible conversations recorded backstage at Pitchfork Music Festival 2018: a talk between two of the breakout artists of 2017, Julie Byrne and Vagabon’s Laetitia Tamko. Fresh off a national co-headline tour, the friends sat down backstage to discuss the physical and the metaphysical elements of self-care on the road; the often delicate symbiosis of creating art and managing one’s business; the pressures of creating new music when people are watching; and that one guy in the front row in St Louis. Fuck that guy. Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer @eliaeinhorn This episode was produced by Mark Yoshizumi. Lecture 13 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories lecture series. In this lecture, I present the second half of the story of Jacob, later Israel (he who struggles with God). After serving his time with his uncle Laban, and being deceived by him in the most karmic of manners, Jacob returns to his home country. On the way, he encounters an angel, or God Himself, wrestles through the night with Him. Successful in his encounter, he still sustains damage to his thigh, but earns the name Israel, and becomes the father of all those who to this day wrestle with God. Lecture 13 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories lecture series. The Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories starts up after a two month hiatus with the first half of the story of Jacob, the founder of Israel ("those who wrestle with God"), the man who robs his brother of his birthright, is deceived into marrying the wrong woman, and dreams of a stairway to heaven, in the ancient Shamanic tradition.
