38: How umru laid the building blocks of hyperpop

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2025 102:17

A jam-packed episode of No Tags this week, but we had a lot to catch up on. Central Cee's debut album Can't Rush Greatness is out (02:56) and it's UK drill's biggest album to date, almost by default. Eusexua (10:07) might be the record that finally sells us on FKA twigs? And we talk about the grey zones of desire in Babygirl over in film corner (18:32).But then onto the main event: we're joined this week by NYC DJ and virtual pop architect umru (30:09). A key member of SoundCloud's class of the mid-2010s, umru officially graduated to the hyperpop top tier in 2017 with his work on Charli XCX's game-changing Pop 2 mixtape. He's since worked with the likes of Hannah Diamond, Tommy Cash, Hyd, Dorian Electra and more while releasing his own music on PC Music and, this year, LuckyMe. He's also one of our favourite DJs, with an anything-goes approach that feels firmly in the legacy of faves like Total Freedom, Evian Christ and Ryan Hemsworth. We also talked about his past life running parties on Minecraft, leak culture, pop's Splice era, and the link between PC Music and Pirates of the Caribbean.A little housekeeping: after a small delay the second pressing of No Tags: Conversations on underground music culture should be arriving in the next week, so if you missed out the first time, head to Shopify to place your order. In the meantime, if you're enjoying No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording, editing and transcribing podcasts like this one. "Fandom is the new religion of our capitalist society." The genderqueer pop star discusses economic philosophy, queer aesthetics and the internet ahead of their new album. Avant-pop star Dorian Electra wasn't your average American student. As an 18-year-old, they were interested in exploring philosophy and political radicalisation through music, making their debut in 2010 with the song "I'm In Love With Friedrich Hayek"—a ballad to the economist who influenced Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher's free-market ideology. Electra was simultaneously working as a stripper, channeling their exploration of gender into an early career series of pop videos that told the history of feminism, drag and vibrators. More than a decade later, the artist has brought these seemingly contradictory facets of their interests into a bizarre and beautiful symbiosis, and is now celebrating the release of their third album. On this week's RA Exchange, Electra speaks with moderator Gunseli Yalcinkaya about the underpinnings of Fanfare, which lands on October 6th. The first single, "Sodom & Gomorrah," explores the album's central conceit: the meaning of fandom and online culture in 2023. "I've been experiencing hyper-online everything," they said. "The past few years have solidified the idea in my head that as we've grown increasingly secular, people still want something to give their life greater meaning, and they've found that in connecting with others online in a way that's largely replaced religion." They also discuss their proclivity for ultra-synthetic, cartoonishly masculine pop; their take on the internet zeitgeist; ADHD; musical performance as an expression of the extremities of human experience and more. Listen to the episode in full. This edition of the RA Exchange was recorded in collaboration with The Qube, London's first members' studio for music and content creators. As New York Fashion Week rolls around again, it's the perfect time to listen to this interview with Hillary Taymour, founder of the much-talked-about NYC label Collina Strada. Collina Strada is produced locally in small runs, using mostly deadstock. They've been working with the Real Real to upcycle unsold items, and with Liz Ricketts at the Or Foundation to upcycle and divert T-shirt waste in America before it heads offshore, and ends up in places like Kantamanto Market in Ghana.Known for shaking up the sustainability conversation stateside, this CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund finalist is also often heralded for its work around diversity and inclusion, and championing representation in their shows, but Hillary has no time for that. She says, they simply cast their community; their friends and artists they admire. Whether that's the label's co-designer Charlie's septuagenarian mum; the model Aaron Philip (self- described “a black woman in a wheel chair who happens to be trans”); or a musician like Dorian Electra - it's not that Collina is doing something radical. Rather, that the conventional fashion system is super out of touch. This is a candid conversation about going your own way, finding joy on creativity, and the frustrations of trying to be a sustainable fashion designer inside an unsustainable system.*Note: We've been saving this one up - this conversation one was recorded before the break after Series 7.Also before Alessandro Michele's departure from Gucci was announced.Enjoying the podcast? Mostly known by the mononym umru, the producer is one of a younger generation of so-called SoundCloud artists signed to A.G. The scene includes peers like 100 Gecs, Petal Supply, himera, Fraxiom, Dorian Electra, the list goes on.Based in New York with Estonian roots, umru recently dropped single ‘check 1' from a forthcoming EP that features vocals by 645AR and Tallinn-born emcee Tommy Cash. The music presents a more song-oriented approach to his usual maximal EDM experimentation. At 22-years-old umru has already worked with Charli XCX and had a credit on a Diplo track, he co-runs design firm Parent Company which also organises Open Pit's Minecraft music festivals.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of incredible young songwriter-performers whose music isn't super similar, but who both embrace a sort of ultra-modern mish-mash of styles: Dorian Electra and Claud. Claud was the first performer signed to Phoebe Bridgers' new label, Saddest Factory, after spending some time in a duo called Toast. Claud's debut album, Super Monster, is most often described as “bedroom pop”—that term is brought up in this chat—but that's only a small part of it. There are hints of all kinds of sounds here, from vaguely Latin-esque to pop-punkish on the delightful “That's Mr. Bitch to You.” Dorian Electra has been at it a bit longer than Claud, having made a splash around ten years ago with playful, politically charged songs about money and gender fluidity, among many other things. Electra was featured on the Charli XCX track “Femmebot” a few years back, and in 2020 released their second album, My Agenda, which features everyone from Pussy Riot to Village People. Electra and Claud have a great conversation, tackling everything from the importance of Spotify playlists—which played a role in each of their success—to college to the complicated commercialization of Pride Month. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

The queer pop icon will be taking us through the a-z of the fedora hat. From it's first iteration as a queer symbol, to a mid 00's pop-star fave, to it's current connotations with the alt-right. We'll be chatting to Dorian about their work reappropriating symbols from the right through a radical queer lens, the importance of arming yourself with knowledge of those who sit on the opposite end of the political spectrum, and how socio-political symbols have changed in the age of social media.Every other week we'll be picking the brain of a different creative about something they admire that has nothing to do with how they generate their income.Want to support the podcast? When we took Oken, others in the Ginnels had a dozen ideas for different ways we could use him - whether that be as a bargaining chip with the council or turning him into the weapon the Jackal’s said he was. It took all my sway to keep him with the Jubilant. I reasoned that if Ezra could help a fool like me, then just maybe they could do the same with Oken.” ~~~ After stealing the Jackal’s weapon, our crew head back to their headquarters - the Jubilee, Embrace’s first carousel - for some downtime. New measles cases continue to decrease as the city's outbreak continues. In the latest data, there have been just 16 new cases reported in June 2019, down from highs in March and April of around 170 new cases per month. Combined with the outbreak in Rockland County, New York State continues to make up the largest percentage of the nationwide total, which, at 1,077 cases, has now surpassed numbers last seen 27 years ago and has become the largest outbreak seen since the disease was declared eliminated in the year 2000. As a comparison, there were only 86 cases of measles reported nationwide in 2016. 50 years ago on June 28, 1969 — Tensions between police and the gay community boil over into a revolt during an overnight raid on the Stonewall Inn — View the full schedule of the WorldPride Festival during June and plan for the Pride parade, coming up on June 30th. No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank. Mariah Hanson, founder and producer of the legendary Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the 29th year of this iconic event that takes place in Palm Springs, California from April 3rd through April 7th. The Dinah is the largest and most iconic girl party music festival in the world as tens of thousands of lesbian identifying women from around the world make the annual pilgrimage to celebrate, unite, empower and live OutLoud at this infamous 5 day event. The festivities includes high profile performances by nationally renowned recording artists, massive pool parties with world famous DJs, go-go dancers, red carpet events with celebrity guests, dance parties, meet and greets with your favorite celebians and so much more. It’s been recently announced that Philadelphia-based rapper, singer, producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist Bri Steves and genre-norm bending pop star Dorian Electra are the newest additions to the performance lineup which already includes Grammy Award winner Daya, enigmatic musician Leikeli47, hip-hop sensations Kodie Shane and Diiamon'd Royalty. Comedians Fortune Feimster and Chaunte Wayans will headline "The Dinah Comedy Night" and special celebian guests will include Big Brother winner Kaycee Clark, massively popular tattoo artist TouShai and Bad Girls Club actress Kat Florek are all set to make appearances. We talked to Mariah about her inspiration for this year’s Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what question she wished people would ask about The Dinah Hanson stated, “I love when people who have never been to The Dinah write and ask what to expect or what events to go to. Of course my answer is to go to every event but I also think it’s really such an incredible weekend and my advise is to just get there and at least go to one event because the sense of community there is so empowering you just leave feeling like you can take over the world, that anything is possible…So at least go to one if not all and come experience this incredibly empowering, inspirational, energetic weekend that leaves people feeling like they can’t wait until next year.” Mariah Hanson has continuously utilized The Dinah as a platform to mobilize our LGBTQ community around humanitarian projects and social issues. An exemplary community leader she has single-handedly revolutionized her industry, overturned tradition and raised the bar on female achievement with an event that is entirely produced by women for women. For many, The Dinah has become an annual tradition between friends; for others it is a bucket-list goal or a pilgrimage to our very own mecca that every queer woman should make at least once in her life. For More Info & Tix: theDinah.com Hear 450+ LGBT Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 39 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! We’re back to our very irregular look at the work of Zalman King. We started way back in episode 18 when we did his directorial debut, Two Moon Junction, so now it’s time for his infamous 1989 follow-up, Wild Orchid, aka the one in which Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis had real actual sex probably. Spoilers: everyone involved says they didn’t, and frankly if they did then they had some real boring and unenthusiastic sex. This is one weird, weird movie, and no one on the show quite knows how they feel about it until they have to actually give it a rating, although everyone agrees that actual Golden Globe winner Jacqueline Bisset and her crazy actual acting and, especially, her fabulous men's suit and drawn-on moustache (very proto-Dorian Electra!) is the unequivocal highlight. Also we didn’t really want to discuss the life and times of Mickey Rourke because that guy is a complete bummer. So, we talked about someone from the film with a much cooler and wilder life: Oleg Vidov! In the ‘70s, he was known as the “Robert Redford of Soviet cinema”. But then some craziness happened because his wife was having an affair with a dashing bearded foreigner you might be familiar with, he got a divorce, and the KGB and Leonid Brezhnev ended up significantly pissy at him, so he defected to the US, staying at Richard Harrison’s house in Rome for a few months on the way!
