In this very special episode, host Shawna Potter chats with her former bandmates from the late 90s/early 00s Nashville indie band, Fair Verona. An old, unlabeled mp3 of the FV song “The Downfall of a Well-Known Actress” found its way onto the Lostwave message boards and with some great detective work, this online community found where the song came from and were pleasantly surprised to find out we're all still playing music. This conversation dives deep into the origins of the band with Beth Cameron and Leah Bergman, and Lostwave member, Tom Stratten, asks questions and gives context. Listen to find out what Lostwave is, how often do these mp3 mysteries get solved, the weird times of 90s indie cred vs selling out, the lack of fellow girls that played guitar (even in Nashville), harassing Mary Timony, and what the hell is “The Downfall of a Well-Known Actress” about anyway? If cryptic messages from the past are warning us about the future, are we likely to listen? Join host Shawna Potter for a very quick chat with historian Mike Dash about “Hunger Stones.” In his second appearance on the pod he gives some background on what could be a War On Women song but just isn't…yet? Folklore versus bureaucracy. Science versus the middle ages. A cool story, or a warning to save the planet? And are the melancholy vibes literally carved into stone more emo or metal? You decide! Mike Dash bio: “I read history at Cambridge and went on to complete a PhD at King's College London back in 1990. Since then I've enjoyed an eclectic career as a journalist, magazine publisher, teacher, and author, in the course of which I've written five (and counting) heavily-researched popular histories: Tulipomania, Batavia's Graveyard, Thug, Satan's Circus and The First Family – if you really want the full story, go here. Oh, and I live in London.” The official sponsors of this episode are First Defense Krav Maga, and Pupcakes and Pawstries. ¿O a mí? Pensarían que estamos locos. Pero con los niños esperamos eso. Permitimos que nuestros hijos estén locos hasta que tienen unos ocho años y entonces empezamos a decir: «¿Por qué no creces? ¡Crece!». With a desire to bring change within an angry world, Shawna Potter formed feminist punk band War on Women in 2010. Potter was pissed at the world and music was a chance to make a stand. Potter felt things were getting worse and she didn't want to hold back how she felt. Music was a way to rally for a change.  There have been great strides in the acceptance of feminism. But, any time society takes a step forward, there will always be people who are resistent. So, War on Women continues to have the same topics in their songs.  One way to describe Potter's stage presense would be comfortable. Growing up she was always interested in performing arts and was involved with theater. Eventually Potter traded theater in for a guitar and got into punk music. Her music is important because it has a message that means so much to Potter and so many people who attend War on Women shows.  Letting go of what society expects from her and being free is something Potter takes pride in. However, taking a stand means having to be informed, which is something that Shawna is. She has written a book called "Making Spaces Safer." She also runs a podcast labeled "But Her Lyrics." This is not only a fun interview about Potter's journey in music, but it's extremely informative one too. Check out Potter's work below. The conversation, per the usual, goes into murky, uncharted territory and barely makes it back to the realms of coherence. What does lava, an octopus and bystander intervention have in common? (this isn't a joke but come up with a punch line to that and win a stuffed animal) TUNE IN AND FIND OUT!!! As Zach says in the interview, any time one gets a chance to talk to Shawna you leave that conversation knowing more and being better off for having paid attention. Sexism and harassment are two poisons deeply rooted in culture and politics that are yet to be purged by society from its system. Many people still suffer from these disgusting philosophies, particularly minorities. Kimra Luna aims to change our take on this matter by sitting down with the author and front person for War on Women, Shawna Potter. She explores the contents of her book, Making Spaces Safer, which focuses on how to deal with such toxic situations by empowering every space we move around in and the people we mingle with. Shawna also shares the Five D's of Bystander Intervention, as well as some tips for young women who want their voices to be heard.

One of our most humble guests return to IUF! Vocalist Shawna Potter from War On Women has been one of the more hard working individuals this year – from releasing a new album titled “Wonderful Hell”, to leading training programs set to combat alcohol-facilitated sexual violence, to publishing a new book titled “Making Spaces Safer”, and starting a new podcast called “But Her Lyrics” – Shawna tells her journey as she continues to strive to make a positive difference in the community and the world through her art - professionally and personally. There is a rewarding aspect to working hard as it is easy to lose track of where you are at during a certain point in your career – We revisit those points with Shawna and she describes how she is very appreciative of the highly well-deserved positive feedback she has been getting from the community. Shawna's a public speaker, activist, author, consultant, small business manager, mostly vegan and an ordained clergy person. It's been a long road to get to this point, and it's still a lengthy one ahead as this world turns the page into the new year – and Shawna is ready to take things head-on. Listen in now and make sure to buy/stream War On Women's newest album “Wonderful Hell” out now on Bridge 9 Records.

What does mean to make a space safer? What is a safe space? According to Shawna Potter, it’s being aware of the presence and behavior you have in places where you work, gather, and play. In this episode, Shawna and I discuss street harassment and how to stop it as a victim and as a bystander, healthy flirting, what it means to a feminist, and how being “an independent woman” can hold you back from interpersonal relationships. All of these things are laid out in greater detail in her book Making Spaces Safer: A Guide to Giving Harassment the Boot Wherever You Work, Play, and Gather linked in the show description.   ______________________ Donate to the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/ellenmelon Ellen Melon Social Media links: https://www.instagram.com/ellenmelonshow/ https://twitter.com/EllenMelonShow https://www.facebook.com/ellenmelonshow www.ellenmelon.com ______________________ About Shawna Potter (WOW!): Shawna Potter, singer for the band War On Women, has tackled sexism and harassment in lyrics and on stage for years. Taking the battle to music venues themselves, she has trained night clubs and community spaces in how to create safer environments for marginalized people. Now she’s turned decades of experience into a clear and concise guide for public spaces of all sorts to shut down harassers wherever they show up.  In her book released May 2019, Making Spaces Safer: A Guide to Giving Harassment the Boot Wherever You Work, Play, and Gather, the steps she outlines are realistic, practical, and actionable. With the addition of personal stories, case studies, sample policies, and no-nonsense advice like “How to Flirt without Being a Creep,” she shows why safer spaces are important, while making it easier to achieve them.  Her website: https://shawnapotter.com/ Buy the book we discussed: https://www.akpress.org/making-spaces-safer-book.html Book review/discussion video with STRAND: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wesGgrMop98 Hollaback! Shawna Potter of Baltimore's War on Women is a welcome revelation, a powerful voice equal parts savage, full-bodied and soulful. Hitting peak notes hard and striking violently through the real things that matter means something, onstage and on record. Especially from a band that is as excellent as a David Lee Roth star jump. In this extended conversation, Shawna Potter speaks to host Christina Rowatt about music, creativity, punk rock and using your voice as a weapon.

War On Women is a co-ed, feminist hardcore punk band based out of Baltimore, MD. Their lead vocalist is Shawna Potter and she is of course, so much more than just your average singer. Beyond handling vocals for the band she is also the founder of Hollaback! Baltimore, co-founder of & trainer for Safer Space Program, writer, activist, public speaker, amp repair technician, and ordained clergy. Shawna took the time to have a great conversation about as many topics as we could fit into this episode. Besides being talented and hard-working, Shawna found a way to create a safe space in this conversation to exchange some ideas of topics that we haven't generally discussed on the podcast with previous guests. Shawna was as open and honest about her goals and achievements as she was about the vulnerability and challenges she faces in her current position and endeavors. There was a refreshing honesty and attention to nuance in this conversation that doesn't always happen in today's social media world. We thank Shawna for her openness and the generosity of her time.
