"Spotify Fights Back" is a rather oxymoronic statement. This is a recent headline from MusicRadar and it's got us in a tizzy. In said article, Spotify is basically saying their business model is fair ball. But musicians have a slightly different take. So this week we go our round against the streaming giant. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we tackle A.I. in the music biz and go over the "Thunderbolts*" movie. Musically, we crank Midnight, Ghaal's Wyrd, White Wizard, Mindwars, Leftover Crack, Pupil Slicer, Iron Spell and we introduce Dream Heavy in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

Dunia Best was a member of the very first incarnation of The Slackers. And after she left the band, she took a song she'd hope would be a Slackers song, "Walk," and started playing it acoustically. A friend suggested she could start her own band. That band, Agent 99 (1993-1995) played all over New York with No Commercial Value (Scott Sturgeon's first band), The Slackers, as well as punk and funk bands. Though Agent 99 was short-lived, many great musicians came through, like Ara Babajian (The Slackers, Leftover Crack), Alec Baillie (Leftover Crack), Jayson Nugent (The Slackers), and perhaps the most famous of all: Dunia's brother Ahmed Best, who would go on to play Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels. On today's episode, we talk to Dunia about her time in Agent 99 and the Slackers, but also get into newer projects like Brave New Girl, Dubistry, Rude Girl Revue and Dunia and Aram, who just released their debut LP called Bedfellows. We also talk about Dunia's non-ska influences (Steely Dan, Sade, Joni Mitchell), mind-numbing data-entry jobs, the trials of teaching music, and how being a fitness instructor doesn't pay a living wage. We also discuss the Fierce Pussy Fest and the formation of Riot Grrrls (Agent 99 was there!), and Dunia's deep friendship with Ari Up from The Slits. When drummer Ara Babajian joined The Slackers in 2003, Vic Ruggiero and David Hillyard had to teach him how to correctly play a traditional ska beat, which they did by handing him key records to listen to, and by singing ska beats at him. Ara wasn't new to ska. He'd played in several bands like Agent 99 and Leftover Crack. But The Slackers approached ska with a greater emphasis on hitting that Jamaican groove just right, so he had to up his game. He may have come to the band with little experience playing trad ska, but he's since proven himself to be a top-tier ska drummer. On today's episode we talk with Ara about his history in The Slackers, Agent 99, and Leftover Crack--the first time he left the group, he did so three songs into a show in Toronto in 2001, upset that Scott Sturgeon was on-stage making 9-11 jokes. We learn all sorts of interesting facts about Ara's life, like who played drums in Agent 99 before he joined the group (Hint: He played Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars). He also tells us stories about Leftover Crack's late bassist Alec Baillie, the time Bomb the Music Industry opened for The Slackers in Chicago and were booed by the audience (Jeff Rosenstock, apparently, was delighted by the reaction), what it's been like for The Slackers in recent years to get coverage in Rolling Stone Magazine and Washington Post (An article by IDOS guest Jessica Lipsky). And we learn about his 1980s group Das Booty, whose demo recordings were mistaken for Red Hot Chili Peppers demos for the Uplift Mofo Party Plan record. This week legendary punk front person Stza Crack (Scott Sturgeon) joins The Bastard Sermon to talk everything from Star F*cking Hipsters, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, C-Squat, smoking crack and much more.
In this episode, we indulge John as he drones on about the Leftover Crack book release show in LBC and Punk rock bowling in Vegas. Also discussed: anger issues and the history of burlesque.
Leftover Crack is a band of dumpster-diving, drug-abusing, cop-hating crust punks…so begins the opening section in the book Architects of Self Destruction, an oral history of the band. The story of Leftover Crack is strange—unbelievable at times—and filled with bizarre decisions, weird characters, and as the title implies, copious self-sabotage. They were also a very unique band, formed in the ashes of Choking Victim in the late 90s that mixed ska, dissonant punk rock, and angry black metal in a unique way. As unbelievable as many of Leftover Cracks stories are, the fact that these stories are now documented in a book is almost more unbelievable. The author, or rather authors are Brad Logan, longtime guitarist in the group, and Punknews contributor John Gentile. The two collaborated on this project by interviewing a whole bunch of people and stringing together their stories and contradictory perspectives to give the reader an unfiltered view of what exactly happened…as told by those that were there. On today’s episode, we discuss some of the stories in the book, like how Choking Victim broke up 2 days into recording their one album, how Leftover Crack wanted to name their first album Shoot the Kids At School but Hellcat Records told them no, and we also discuss the polarizing leader of the band, Scott Sturgeon. We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Davis and the Murder Police over Zoom video! Emily Davis and the Murder Police (EDMP)—El Paso, TX's favorite resident alt-punk project helmed by songwriter and frontperson Emily Davis—have found success across the nation through their poignant music and creatively engaging social media presence. Emily's “heart-on-sleeve lyrics, biting wit, and own brand of acoustic-electric folk-punk,” as El Paso Inc. describes it, brings a unique presence to the Southwest US music scene. Emily has had a fascinatingly unique journey to the national stage. Their YouTube channel, featuring numerous punk rock covers (of, most notably, Bad Religion) has drawn serious attention – accumulating nearly 7 million views. Emily has clearly proven their talent deserves to be noticed, with a voice influenced by artists like Dolores O'Riordan, Shirley Ann Manson, Jenny Lewis and Neko Case, and a completely unique songwriting form of their own. And noticed they were, leading to the band's most significant outing to date – an opening slot on Bad Religion's 2019 fall tour to packed venues across the country. Through the opportunities and fans EDMP gained from this tour, they have expanded their audience to a national scale and have accumulated over 1 million plays on Spotify collectively from Emily's three solo albums and their debut album together, Same Old World.Emily's voice is an emotive one to say the least, and the often stark, introspective lyrics they write with expert precision are consistently front and center—commanding attention, undoubtedly. Emily's lyrical vulnerability on mental health, particularly regarding their experiences with bipolar disorder, is palpable but written in a manner that still feels relatable. A former Cigarettes After Sex Member—most notably playing guitar on their 2012 EP “I.”'s sleeper hit song, “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby”— Emily's guitar playing especially in their own band's mix is no joke. They strum with a level of intensity unmatched by most, crafting the parts in a way that is entirely complementary with their voice. The other members of EDMP only add to that power and vulnerability, with each member bringing their skilled performances to the mix to further empower each song. EDMP has some significant accomplishments under their belt, even beyond their 2019 run with punk legends Bad Religion. In 2017, Emily toured solo with Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin, supporting his at-the-time recently released solo record, “Millport”. In 2019 alone, the band opened for Leftover Crack, The Toasters, Authority Zero, and alt-rock cult superstars Cold War Kids. They were about to head out on tour with El Paso-based rock legends Sparta this last Spring, but had to put that plan on pause due to COVID-19. Still, Emily Davis and The Murder Police haven't let the pandemic hinder their progress, having just completed their second successful crowdfunding campaign. The band raised an impressive $13K to finance their upcoming second record, coming Spring of 2021. Their debut record, “Same Old World” was released on October 5, 2018 as the result of a similarly successful crowdfunding campaign. The full band's debut record featured a mix of 90's-inspired alt rock, folk and punk, to form a sound that Emily has no doubt continued to curate and perfect for their upcoming second full-length, “Never A Moment Alone.”We want to hear from you! Al from Cop/Out, Trashy, and Leftover Crack and Kacie Kerrigan are back! We ring in the new year the only way we know how, talking shit and playing tunes. This episode we turn our sights to figuring out what is in store for us in 2021 but we don’t ignore the opportunity to take one last final dump on this dumpster fire of a year. We talk a ton of trash, sort through the things that need sorting through, find any kernels of goodness to carry with us into the next year, and make some extremely short sighted predictions about the fresh hell that awaits us next. It’s fun, but there is some feeble attempts to get some perspective in there too. PLUS we listen to a bunch of 2020 tunes from Cop/Out, Days N Daze, All Torn Up!, and Pansy.
Al from Cop/Out, Trashy, and Leftover Crack and Kacie Kerrigan get down to start a two part discussion about just how rough this year has really been. On this episode we focus on trying to get a grip of our grief. We like so many others have suffered debilitating losses in our community. Grieving all of our friends, families and community members who have passed away has been overwhelming. Not being able to get together has made this so much harder. So we talk about grief in a few different ways from weird social media posts to petty self reflections to socially distant commiserations and more. Al, Kacie, and I all recently lost a dear, dear brother and friend here in NYC. Alec Baillie of Leftover Crack was someone we knew very well, toured with for years, and w personally were very close to. His passing has been absolutely heart breaking to us and so many more here. We and so many others here in NYC and around the world loved Alec with our whole hearts. By no means do we try to fully explore all of the beauty and the complexity of Alec Baillie. He meant so much to so many people. We make an attempt to touch on some of that in this episode. But mainly we wanted to honor our friend in some small way and also we wanted to talk about our journey to mourn him in some functional way. Hopefully in talking about this here it can help some other people get some perspective on this painful topic. We know this is a hard topic, so we also tell some dumb stories and talk a ton of shit, as usual. It’s not all sadness, there is some joy in the pain. PLUS we listen to tunes from Trashy, Leftover Crack, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, and Broken Dead.

Jesse, Whitney, Meagan, and Geoff of Houston's Days N Daze get down to talk about the trials and tribulations of this most recent Cracktober Fest with Cop/Out and Leftover Crack. We clear up any of the rumors and gossip swirling around about the tour, and talk about how the band has persevered and even thrived through all its more recent struggles. And we get neck deep in what it touring is really like when you live life on the road. Then on the second half of the show we go back to Days N Daze roots and find out how they got started, and how they all ended up together. And we also talk a lil bit about where they all headed now. We talk a healthy amount of shit in the midst of all those crazy ass stories and also manage to find that sobering, shining light behind all the darkness, just as they help us do in their sweet tunes. PLUS we listen to tunes from Days N Daze, Chad hates George., Murder, and Cop/Out.

In this episode I speak with Shannon Knox. She is an artist and activist based out of Oakland, California. We talk about her beginnings as an art school dropout and moving into the punk scene at an early age. Learning how to silkscreen, she began making patches and selling them on the streets at a time when she couldn’t find work. Her art became distinctly recognizable, with her trademark black and white ink taking shape into political and often controversial imagery. Shannon’s work has been used to raise money for causes, it’s been worn by the likes of Jello Biafra, and it’s made it onto the cover of the Leftover Crack album Constructs of the State. Shannon speaks about why she doesn’t want art to be her main source of income, working with harm reduction programs, and why it’s so important for women in the scene to stick together.@shannonkknoxhttps://www.alceaproductions.com/https://www.etsy.com/shop/alceaproductions

This week the Rad Crew sits down with comedian John-Michael Bond to talk about musician Warren Zevon. John-Michael describes being exposed to Zevon's music at an early age by his cool minister dad and quickly being taught the difference between "home music" and "church music." See previous episode for circumstances. This starts off with The Peacocks, from CH. "no sex baby, I'd rather have breakfast" is a great lyric, and there is "It's ok, we've all seen better days!" Johnny Thunder is up next. He was with the Dead Boys in NYC when the earth was young. ALL BY MYSELF. Jonny Manak and the Depressives remind me of Johnny Thunder a bit. They are from San Jose. Jonny skates. Dead Boys! "I'm just a dead boy. All this and more, little girl. How about on the floor, little girl? I'll die for you if you want me too." Sucks that Stiv Bator got run over in NYC. Next, we move across the Atlantic to London circa 1978 with the Adverts. LOOKING THROUGH GARY GILMORE'S EYES Song about someone getting eye transplants from an executed serial murder. Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in Utah in the mid 1970's Six thousand miles west and 10 years later we have Bad Religion. Just tremendous from beginning to end. Next are LeftOver Crack come to us from New Jersey some time in the past decade or so. AND WHEN THERE IS NO HOPE, I SMOKE THE CRACK AND SHOOT THE DOPE. It isn't my way out, but it is damn powerful. There is some killer bass in this song and I love the strangled vocal noises. Makes you want to pick up a brick and throw it. Much lighter, but still great. Punk Rock Girls by THE QUEERS. It is really bubble gum punk, but I love it. Yummy yummy punk rock girls, I wish they all were punk rock girls. I saw the twice and both shows were great. The one at Bottom of the Hill in 2006 was epic. The Manges and The Methadones opened. They played a Screetching Weasels song, Cindy's on Methadone that I never thought I would hear live. The Clash. He don't like his boring job now. Fill it up Jacko. Janie Jones was a famous London madam/prostitute. More Queers. Kicked out of the Weebeloes! Daddy beat me with a hose I punched her in her snotty nose I guess that's the way it goes That's all.
