On this holiday edition of Parallax Views, Robbie Martin of Media Roots Radio and the documentary A Very Heavy Agenda returns to spread the holiday cheer of a Christmas classic... the 1984 Joe Dante/Steven Spielberg collaboration Gremlins! Yes, Gremlins is a Christmas movie, especially if Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie! It's a festive conversation about the little green monsters that terrorized our nightmares as kids and the furry little guy we all wanted as a pet that Furby ripped off! Robbie admits he used to confuse E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and Gremlins. J.G. tries to avoid getting the horny police called on him while talking about his early childhood crush Phoebe Cates. Robbie explains the use of cats in Jerry Goldsmith's score and pitches his prequel idea that'd call back to Phoebe Cates' eerie, spooky, chilling monologue about why she hates Christmas. We chat about Corey Feldman showing up dressed as a Christmas tree, the greatest movie scene to ever utilize Do You Hear What I Hear?, Gremlins' blending of horror and comedy, the holiday spirit in Gremlins, "That Guy" character actor Dick Miller as Murray Futterman, and the eternal question of whether Gremlins is racist, is Gremlins a critique of capitalism and/or consumerism, and more Then we switch gears to the completely absolutely off-the-wall, insanely zany sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Robbie and I talk about the meta/parody nature of the movie, the revenge of Dick Miller's Murray Futterman, Star Trek's Robert Picardo, John Glover as an eccentric billionaire modeled after Ted Turner and Donald Trump (who manages to be so insanely energetic and naive that the originally meant-to-be-villainous role become something else entirely), Joe Dante and his love of cartoons and animation (including the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck short), Zach Galligan's character Billy Peltzer getting a sexually harassed by boss vis-a-vis an under-the-table foot job attempt, the two different "breaking the fourth wall" interruptions for the theatrical and VHS releases of the movie, Hammer Studios horror legend Christopher Lee as a mad scientist, a blink-and-you'll miss it cameo from John Addams of Gomez Addams fame, the cameos from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan and movie critic Leonard Maltin, how the satire of TV was so ahead of its time that some jokes don't even hit the same anymore, the movie's lampooning of technology, Gizmo the Mogwai getting the Baby Yoda treatment, Rambo and Gremlins 2, and more! We then end discussing the films of Joe Dante, the director behind both movies. We talk Burying the Ex, Innerspace, Matinee with John Goodman, Dante's two Masters of Horror episodes, the little seen TV movie The Second Civil War with Phil Hartman as the President of the United States, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and, of course, Small Soldiers.

There are some characters in horror that stick with us because they scare us half to death. Others are just so hilariously over the top that you just can't forget them. But there are others that are so relatable that you immediately feel a kinship to them, and they stick with you for years to come. One of those characters is Billy Peltzer, played by actor Zach Galligan, from the eternal classic (and yes, it's a Christmas movie) Gremlins. So, this holiday season, we're taking a look at one of the stars of the 80's biggest monster hits, a little family comedy called Gremlins; on this episode of WTF Happened To This Horror Celebrity, we're shedding some bright light on Zach Galligan!
If you want a rational, unbiased opinion on this film, mosey on over to one of the 500,000 other movie review podcasts begging you for downloads. This is not it. Be forewarned, this is Jake's third favorite film of all time, any genre. . . maybe even higher now that I type this out. . . oh, I guess now would be a good time to admit that I (Jake) have to write these dumb descriptions in the third person. There was only one person who would endure Jake bouncing up and down in his chair as his eyes fling apart like atoms in the Hadron Collider, his beautiful, patient, very patient wife: Ciara. That's right, you have begged and pleaded and the pulchritudinous prodigal spouse returns. Gremlins 2: The New Batch came out in 1990, but instead of its deserved thunderous applause, the more fitting sound effect would be a wet fart. Simply put, this movie may have been ahead of its time. Irreverent, fourth wall breaking, absurdist films were not really mainstream by that point. Jake forgot to mention this on the episode, but do you think Deadpool would exist without Gremlins 2? Also, when Disney inevitably obtains Warner Brothers, let's make that crossover happen. Directed by Joe Dante (The Howling), who would only come back to the franchise with full creative control. Creature effects by Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London), who is a gilded god of gore and grossout. Zach Galligan returns as Billy Peltzer and Phoebe Cates reprises her role as Kate Beringer. Their old pal, Murray Futterman, played by Dick Miller, comes to visit them in the big city, from ol' Kingston Falls. John Glover plays industrialist Daniel Clamp. Robert J. Prosky plays Grandpa Fred. Robert Picardo plays head of security, Forster. Finally, the late and great Sir Christopher Lee Plays Dr. Cushing Catheter. The film also features cameos by Hulk Hogan, Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, Rick Ducommun, Leonard Maltrin, and the indomitable John Astin, who many will remember as Gomez Addams. Find out about deleted scense, production, conception, literary references, easter eggs, basically everything that Jake has learned from worshiping this film for nearly 30 years, all in one hour! Wow. Lockdown! Quarantine! Self-isolation. It's fair to say that this has been one of the stranger weeks in our lifetimes and things are pretty up in the air and crazy. A little normalcy is what's required here so will continue to bring you episodes as usual. We will not abandon the quarantined. Now then, this week, fresh off the back of an amazing screening at Glasgow Frightfest which saw his film A Ghost Waits top MANY best of the fest lists AND being good enough to join us in person... It's Adam Stovall! His chosen film? Gremlins 2: The New Batch! Yes! It's 1990! It's the first 12 rated film that Andy saw in the cinema! It's one of the most tonally outrageous sequels ever made! The synopsis is as follows: The magical collectibles store that Gizmo calls home has just been destroyed, and the tiny monster finds his way into a newly erected skyscraper. Billy Peltzer and his bride-to-be, Kate, who have previously dealt with Gremlins run amok, discover that Gizmo and an impish legion of reptilian pals are inhabiting the downtown building. The couple tries to stop the creatures from escaping into New York City, but this new batch of beasts might be uncontrollable. Huge thanks to Adam for joining us! Follow him on Twitter HERE! Imagine you're Chris Columbus, y'know, the dude who wrote The Goonies, but before that. Oh, and before you directed Home Alone... and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York... and two Harry Potter Films... and Adventures in Babysitting. Imagine you are living in squalor and the rats in your New York City apartment inspire you to write about creepy crawlers. Then, suppose Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws, E.T., and Indiana Jones buys that script and wants to produce it. Without that almost unfathomably unlikely series of events, we would not have this week's episode on Gremlins. Columbus' initial draft of the script was much grimmer, featuring the death of Barney, our hero's beloved pup, decapitations, and much more. The script underwent many rewrites, with several members of the cast and crew indicating they settled around 10! Directed by Joe Dante (Piranha, The Howling, Masters of Horror) this small budget holiday film was an incredible financial success, spawning a sequel and two international theme park rides! The special effects were by Chris Walas (The Fly, Return of the Jedi, Humanoids from the Deep), who proudly boasted that many effects in the final cut of the film were developed just the day before shooting. There were so many puppets and practical effects in the film that they lost count. In several sequences, puppeteers had to have a puppet on each hand and even on top of their heads! Zach Galligan (Waxwork, Hatchet 3, Nightbeasts) plays Billy Peltzer. Billy has aspirations of much more than being a bank teller and is entrusted with great responsibility by his father, played by Hoyt Axton, when he is given an incredibly unique Christmas present. Gizmo, Billy's Christmas present, is played by Howie Mandel (Little Monsters). Phoebe Cates (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Drop Dead Fred) plays basically the antithetical role to her red-bikini-wearing seductress, and plays Kate, a well-intentioned, hard working small town girl. She also gives one of, if not my absolute favorite monologues in all of film history. Corey Feldman play's Billy's friend, Pete. If you are confused as to why Billy is so much older than his little friend (*in Scarface voice*) it is because Billy was originally the same age, until he was aged in later drafts of the script. The film has some astounding cameo talent from the late Dick Miller to Judge Reinhold. While the movie is all the better for it, unfortunately the majority of Reinhold's part was cut, as the unnecessary real estate subplot was left on the cutting room floor. Miller, who plays the somewhat soothsaying Murray Futterman, was so excellent in this bit part that he was brought back for the sequel: Gremlins 2: The New Batch. In this episode, we review the film delve into the history and trivia, and Jake gives his hair-brained theory as to why this film, The Howling, and Indiana Jones are all in a shared universe. We also take excerpts from the very bizarre novelization of the film by George Gipe. Gipe also did novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers! By this point, he had also written The Man with Two Brains! Marty McFly, a typical American teenager of the Eighties, is accidentally sent back to his hometown of Hill Valley in 1955… Wait same town, wrong movie. A horde of miniature green monsters tear through the small town of Kingston Falls after a mild-mannered bank teller Billy unwittingly unleashes the destructive powers of his new exotic pet. His failure to follow his pet’s three simple rules: No water (but beer is ok), no food after midnight, and no bright light lead to countless deaths and undoubtedly years of legal battles for the Peltzer family. So, when your washing machine blows up or your TV goes on the fritz, before you call the repairman, turn on all the lights and look under all the beds. 'Cause you never can tell, there just might be a gremlin in your house, or it just might be Billy Peltzer sabotaging your entire life.
