POPULARITY
Hammer Studios in the Sargasso Sea. What could go wrong?
The most recent season of True Detective was the most divisive in the show's history. The first one was universally praised, while the second caught a lot of heat. For whatever reason, the third season flew under the radar. We talk about our opinions of season four and the news surrounding the show's future.Hammer Studios is an important part of horror history. It introduced aspects to vampire lore that is still seen today and its use of gothic sexuality and romance would inspire many filmmakers. They have been quiet for decades so the recent announcement has us both excited.David Cronenberg may not have invented body horror, but he is the same most associated with it. His early movies made with the help of the Canadian government are especially interesting. The DIY quality and balls to the wall attitude make them some of the most fun entries in his impressive catalogue. Still, it is fair to say that The Brood is not the best movie he has ever made. A disjointed affair that has trouble sticking the landing, the film is carried by some impressive performances. We may have been confused by what we saw, but did that prevent us from enjoying it?It seems like we have been working off of a list this year. We started with a vampire movie, moved on to alien invasions and have talked about a zombie apocalypse. So it only makes sense that we would review a haunted house flick. Especially one that has heavy religious themes. It is a shame that Inhabitants could not stick to a formula. The team behind it were more concerned with using a plot device they clearly had no knowledge about instead of actually writing a coherent film. The end result is a lead that seems aloof and unloving, a villain that seems justified in its actions, and a whole lot of nonsense. When we covered our series on Frankenstein-inspired horror films earlier this year, we capped it off by looking at The Curse of Frankenstein, the foray into classic horror from Hammer Studios. This week, although deferred a bit from our Dracula series, we're doing the same thing with a conversation about HORROR OF DRACULA. This was notable for being the first time the legendary Christopher Lee with bare the fangs of the iconic count, but certainly not the last (Lee would play Dracula 9 more times). We dive into what makes an older film like this so charming and brush up against the sensibilities that might even make them a bit inspiring as well. Also featuring a Patron-only segment of FoG Your Consideration where we share our thoughts on Smile 2, Speak No Evil, and Cuckoo, this is a brisk and fun conversation that we hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: FoG Your Consideration (Speak No Evil, Smile 2, Cuckoo)9:16 - HORROR OF DRACULASee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
A DEAD WOMAN WITH THE SOUL OF A MAN! A MURDEROUS MAN WHO CAN TRANSFORM INTO A WOMAN! PROBABLY JUST A COINCIDENCE! Have you ever noticed that Hammer Studios made two horror films that work as trans allegories? Well, technically three, but I forgot about one of them. Anyway, I've been curious for a while as to what an actual trans person might think of Terence Fisher's Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) and Roy Ward Baker's Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971), so I invited back my friend and the co-host of the Defend Your Trash Movie podcast, Luana Saitta, in order to pick her brain (Frankenstein-related wordplay intended). This was originally going to be a look at multiple horror movies with a trans/genderqueer slant, but we ultimately had more than enough to talk about with just these two films. Are they really trans allegories? Have they aged well? Are they good outside of the allegory? I hope you agree, enjoy this angle on a couple of Hammer classics, and have a happy Halloween season! 00:00 – Intro 13:55 – Frankenstein Created Woman (and other Hammer Frankenstein movies) 50:32 – Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (and other Hyde and Jack the Ripper movies) 1:42:26 – Outro and sections from Luana's ‘trans canon' If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/ Hope Mill Inc's Hurricane Relief: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-hope-mill-incs-hurricane-relief Florida Disaster Fund (PayPal): https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/119147482333313104/charity/1521272 Palestine Children's Relief Fund: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief

Director Joe Stephenson joins this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast to discuss his latest film, Doctor Jekyll. This film marks a significant moment for Hammer Studios, being their first horror release since the company's acquisition by the aptly named John Gore. Starring, Eddie Izzard and Scott Chambers, the film offers a fresh take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale Joe shares insights into the creative process behind Doctor Jekyll, the challenges of reimagining such a beloved story, and his collaboration with Eddie Izzard in bringing this gothic story to life. He also discusses Midas Man, his forthcoming biopic of Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles.
Time to adjust the old rabbit ears, Slackers! This week is dedicated to the old ultra high frequency television channels of our youth. Kids these days have no idea what VHF or UHF even mean, because even broadcast TV went digital in 2009! But we had two dials, one on top and one on the bottom. The cool stuff was always on the lower dial and in New England we had channels like 25, 38, and 56. Some of my fondest memories are of watching TV on Saturday afternoons - after the cartoons were over - and seeing the “Creature Double Feature” or later, “Kung Fu Theater”. The “Creature Double Feature” gave us Japanese monster movies (kaiju) like Godzilla and Gamera, or classic horror from Universal and Hammer Studios. Think Christopher Lee's Dracula. And lots of Roger Corman flicks.“Kung Fu Theater” brought the best of Chinese martial arts to America. Remember Pai Mei from Tarantino's “Kill Bill”? Do you remember that same character from the martial arts movies in the late 70's & 80's? Check out the Shaw Brothers “Shaolin” films. And with the advent of cable TV, similar shows were broadcast nationally with “Commander USA's Groovie Movies” and Elvira's “Movie Macabre”.Such a fun time to be a kid and getting to watch some really absurd, totally surreal filmmaking!
We wrap up our mini-series #Franklymydear by going further back to another direct adaptation of the novel (albeit one that makes a TON of changes to the text). THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN from 1957 was Hammer Studios attempt to see if they could get in the game of horror cinema. It was a smash success, fueling 6 sequels and launching nearly 2 decades of prolific output of horror films from the studio. Starring Peter Cushing as the infamous doctor and Christopher Lee as the creature, the film takes a decidedly gothic -- almost elegant -- approach to tell its story. It leans heavy on the theatrics and the morality tension to deliver a film that is brief, dense, and surprisingly hefty in emotional and moral resonance.Foreign Correspondent and Quarterly Queen Vera Goudie joins us to discuss this flick, as well as for a Patron-only segment featuring Lackey the Listicle counting down the top 5 mad scientist films that AREN'T based on Frankenstein. It's a brisk and thoughtful conversation that we really hope you enjoy.Patron Only Segment: LACKEY THE LISTICLE'S Top 5 Mad Movie Scientists who AREN'T Based on Frankenstein4:07 - THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEINSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This weekend sees the relaunch of Hammer Studios and the release of a new telling of the Dr Jekyllstory, starring Eddie Izzard. Matthew looks back on Hammer's contribution to cinema and to some of the often inventive and even experimental composers who have created music for the studios since its inception in 1934. Hammer Horror - the vibrantly colourful and distinctive engagements with terror that starred the likes of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Films that brought us recurring tales of The Mummy, Dracula and Frankenstein; and music from the likes of James Bernard. But there was so much more to Hammer. The programme includes cues from Doreen Carwithen for Robin Hood, Tristan Carey's early electronic experiments for Quatermass, Franz Reizenstein's parody score for The Mummy, Harry Robinson's musical evocation of Carmilla, and Mario Nascimbene's pioneering work for One Million Years BC. Plus, of course, classic Hammer moments from James Bernard. And Matthew also talks to composer Blair Mowatt about his score for the new Dr Jekyll film.

Starting in 1958, British movie studio Hammer rolled the dice and put forth their best effort in reviving the classic characters Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy for a new generation. Horror of Dracula was their first film and they knocked it out of the park. With jaw-dropping sets, buxom babes, sweeping musical scores and legendary performances from the likes of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Hammer Studios definitely hit the floor running with a true classic catapulting our favorite monsters back in to the spotlight.
Hey there everybody, it's Hammer time! Mike is back with me, and we're taking a quick side trip away from the exploits of Baron Frankenstein, to bring you a classic in every sense of the word! This original story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is an all time classic, and up to this point had been adapted on film several times. But, when Hammer takes a stab (see what I did there?) at it, they bring out the big guns! Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Andre Morell are front and center in this wonderful film! Mike and I share some of our history with Holmes and Watson, and of course our love of Hammer Studios. As usual, if you'd like to leave any feedback for the show, you can do so through email at Magazinesandmonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the show's FB page (I'm also on BlueSky @docstrange.Bsky.social). Brett Gilliland and Tim Hammett share an exceptional bond that extends beyond their roles as business partners at Visionary Wealth Advisors, as they have become friends over nine successful years as partners. In their discussion, Tim Hammett highlights his three core values – trust, respect, and humility – and emphasizes the significance of aligning these values professionally and personally. As the conversation transitions, Brett dives into each circuit of the Circuit of Success to unravel their meanings and how to incorporate these principles into daily activities and routines. Listen in as Brett and Tim recount Brett's lucky shot and their incredible journey as friends and colleagues. https://youtu.be/wNnrVYj8OX4 Tim Hammett: Big day to be hanging out in this wonderful new studio. Wow. Welcome you to the Circuit of Success Podcast. Let's start show. Brett Gilliland: Welcome to the Circuit of Success. I'm your host, Brett Gilliland, and today you can probably see my smile on my face if you're watching this cuz I've got my good buddy Tim Hammett. Tim's what's going on. Tim Hammett: Good morning. Brett Gilliland: How are you? Tim Hammett: Wonderful. Brett Gilliland: Welcome to the Visionary Studio. Is this not amazing? Tim Hammett: It looks absolutely beautiful. It's been, uh, in the planning for a while, so it's good to see the finished product. Brett Gilliland: I, uh, I think we we'll have the naming rights for a while, the Visionary Wealth Advisors Studio. For the circumstances. Tim Hammett: So if I pay enough money, could I have my name? Brett Gilliland: Yeah. Tim Hammett: As the Hammer. Brett Gilliland: Yeah. Tim Hammett: Podcast Studio. Brett Gilliland: We'll do that. The Tim Hammett or Hammer podcast studio. Tim Hammett: I think we could. Brett Gilliland: Brought to you by the Hammer Studios. Uh, well, hey man, we are here, uh, today and, uh, it's hard to believe that we are nine plus years in the building. Visionary Wealth Advisors. Can you believe that? Tim Hammett: Uh, it went so fast and it does seem like it's yesterday, but then you start to see, we're getting older. Our kids are getting older. And then you realize it's almost a decade. Brett Gilliland: Yeah, it's crazy. Long time. Your kids were little now you got one Gonna be graduating college soon. Tim Hammett: Yeah. Yeah. 21, 19 and 16 now. Brett Gilliland: Crazy. Tim Hammett: All of 'em driving. Brett Gilliland: Crazy. Tim Hammett: Two in college. Brett Gilliland: I got three teenagers now. I didn't even have a fourth kid when we started the company. Tim Hammett: I was gonna say you just had your fourth child. Brett Gilliland: I did. At the time we were started Visionary Wealth Advisors. And then, uh, on March 24th, 2014, and then on off, uh, see, that'd be April 29th, 2014, Asher was born. So one month into our business. So, well we could reminisce about that, but I would like to go back and, uh, we're gonna have all sorts of things we're gonna talk about today, but let's go back and, uh, Do you remember the phone call when, uh, you, you looked at your screen and it said, Brett Gilliland or whatever you would've called me on your phone at that time. Um, do you remember the phone call, uh, when I called you to talk about business advice? Tim Hammett: I do. Just like it was yesterday. I remember where I was standing in my office. I remember looking out my window, looking out into, uh, the parking lot of our prior business building. Um, Just literally like it was yesterday. Brett Gilliland: Yeah. Tim Hammett: Yes. Brett Gilliland: Pretty crazy. And so when you think back on that, that, that call, because if, if my mind, uh, my memory serves me correctly, I believe it was about a four hour phone call that neither one of us had planned. Tim Hammett: That's right. Because I think it would've been almost exactly at lunchtime, about 12 noon. Brett Gilliland: Yeah. Tim Hammett: And then, uh,

On this holiday edition of Parallax Views, Robbie Martin of Media Roots Radio and the documentary A Very Heavy Agenda returns to spread the holiday cheer of a Christmas classic... the 1984 Joe Dante/Steven Spielberg collaboration Gremlins! Yes, Gremlins is a Christmas movie, especially if Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie! It's a festive conversation about the little green monsters that terrorized our nightmares as kids and the furry little guy we all wanted as a pet that Furby ripped off! Robbie admits he used to confuse E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and Gremlins. J.G. tries to avoid getting the horny police called on him while talking about his early childhood crush Phoebe Cates. Robbie explains the use of cats in Jerry Goldsmith's score and pitches his prequel idea that'd call back to Phoebe Cates' eerie, spooky, chilling monologue about why she hates Christmas. We chat about Corey Feldman showing up dressed as a Christmas tree, the greatest movie scene to ever utilize Do You Hear What I Hear?, Gremlins' blending of horror and comedy, the holiday spirit in Gremlins, "That Guy" character actor Dick Miller as Murray Futterman, and the eternal question of whether Gremlins is racist, is Gremlins a critique of capitalism and/or consumerism, and more Then we switch gears to the completely absolutely off-the-wall, insanely zany sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Robbie and I talk about the meta/parody nature of the movie, the revenge of Dick Miller's Murray Futterman, Star Trek's Robert Picardo, John Glover as an eccentric billionaire modeled after Ted Turner and Donald Trump (who manages to be so insanely energetic and naive that the originally meant-to-be-villainous role become something else entirely), Joe Dante and his love of cartoons and animation (including the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck short), Zach Galligan's character Billy Peltzer getting a sexually harassed by boss vis-a-vis an under-the-table foot job attempt, the two different "breaking the fourth wall" interruptions for the theatrical and VHS releases of the movie, Hammer Studios horror legend Christopher Lee as a mad scientist, a blink-and-you'll miss it cameo from John Addams of Gomez Addams fame, the cameos from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan and movie critic Leonard Maltin, how the satire of TV was so ahead of its time that some jokes don't even hit the same anymore, the movie's lampooning of technology, Gizmo the Mogwai getting the Baby Yoda treatment, Rambo and Gremlins 2, and more! We then end discussing the films of Joe Dante, the director behind both movies. We talk Burying the Ex, Innerspace, Matinee with John Goodman, Dante's two Masters of Horror episodes, the little seen TV movie The Second Civil War with Phil Hartman as the President of the United States, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and, of course, Small Soldiers.

On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, film historian Troy Howarth, author of such books as So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films, Assault on the System: The Nonconformist Cinema of John Carpenter, Splintered Visions: Lucio Fulci and His Films, Murder by Design: The Unsane Cinema of Dario Argento, The Haunted World of Mario Bava, and the new Make Them Die Slowly: The Kinetic Cinema of Umberto Lenzi, joins us for a wide-ranging conversation about horror movies. Among the topics covered: - How Troy got into horror through the Hammer Studios' horor movies of the late 1950s through to the 1970s. These films starred such actors as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and centered around classic monsters like The Mummy, Frankenstein's Monster, and Count Dracula - Why Troy doesn't like the "cheesy" description when it comes to older movies; especially when said movies are deliberately infused with comical elements - John Carpenter's Halloween and the dark side of suburbia; Carpenter's films in the context of the Vietnam War and Watergate; the rebellious nature of Carpenter's filmography - Similarities between horror and comedy as genres; the art of the jump scare; the label "elevated horror" and the problems with it - Explaining the term "Euro-Horor" and why Troy doesn't like the term "Euro-Trash" to describe such movies; the history of the Italian murder mystery aka giallo and it's relationship to film noir, whodunits, and the German krimis written by Edgar Wallace; psycho-sexual themes in the giallo; the pulp vibe in Italian gialli; the effect of WWII and fascism on Italian filmmakers like Dario Argento; the politics of Italian horror movies (are they left-wing or right-wing?); Dario Argento's latest movie Occhiali Neri (Dark Glasses) and it relevant social themes in the post-COVID era - Violence and women in the Italian giallo; the complex portrayal of women in the Italian gialli; Argento's collaborator Daria Nicolodi and her importance to films like Suspiria; accusations that Lucio Fulci's films are misogynistic; the decadence of the upper class or bourgeoisie in Italian horror movies -The jazz stylings of the controversial Spanish filmmaker Jess Franco and how living under the dictatorship of Gen. Francisco Franco influenced his films; sympathy and perversion in regards to women in Jess Franco's films - Analyzing the political subtext of Dario Argento's Profondo Rosso aka Deep Red starring David Hemmings and (slightly) futuristic Tenebrae - The ecological sentiment of Mario Bava's Twitch of the Death Nerve and Bay of Blood; the importance of Mario Bava's horror films and his giallo Blood and Black Lace; Mario Bava's Boris Karloff-starring Black Sabbath and the difference between the more subversive European cut (with sexual subtext) and the American International Pictures cut of the film; continental horror films of the mid-20th century were aimed at adults whereas many American horror films were aimed at youth and teenagers - Ruggero Deodato, the director of Cannibal Holocaust - Dario Argento's The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and the explosion of the giallo on the silver screen And much, much more!

Tigon British Film Productions, founded in 1966 as counter programming to the more well known Hammer Studios, nonetheless took a page from the Hammer playbook by making horror and exploitation films. Tigon films, however, are often marked by a low budget mean streak and grittiness. Successes for the company included 1967's The Sorcerers, 1968's The Witchfinder General, and 1971's Blood on Satan's Claw. 1969's The Blood Beast Terror stars Peter Cushing, Robert Flemyng, Wanda Ventham, and Vanessa Howard. Dan and Vicky have a "moth"-ful to say about the strange and quirky film along with lots of recently seen including 1972's The Flesh and Blood Show, HBO Max's Tokyo Vice and DMZ, Lelsey Manville in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, and 1964's Viva Las Vegas. Hey everybody, I'm back with another episode of the show! I know I promised when I first got rolling with this podcast, that I'd be very Hammer Studios heavy on my episodes that feature films. Well, in 2022, I'm going to deliver on that promise, and starting right now! There's no better place to start than the beginning, and The Curse of Frankenstein from 1957, is where Hammer launched into the stratosphere. It also launched the careers of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee into superstar status! And my guest for this one is also a huge fan of Hammer, Mike, from the Comics in the Golden Age Podcast! The two of us went on for quite a stroll with this one as you can imagine, and did our best to give it its due. As usual, you can reach out with any feedback for the show through email at Magazinesandmonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the Fb page. Mike is on Twitter @ComicsintheGA (definitely give him a follow). *Quick note- the synopsis I used from IMDB was off slightly, as the hands the Good Baron procured were not that of a pianist, but a sculptor! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/magsnmonsters/message
In their latest "wrap" session, Ian and Dr. AC take on Terence Fisher's 1959 Hammer horror film, The Mummy! When a family of archaeologists discover the tomb of an Egyptian princess, their plans to bring back priceless artifacts unleashes an ancient curse! Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee star in this "greatest hits" of the Universal Monsters Mummy sequels--but do the derivations matter to someone who's never seen a Mummy film from start to finish?Find out as Ian (a newcomer to the gauzy ghoul's mythology) shares his love for a movie that's old hat to AC! From Hammer's trademark devotion to elaborate sets and costumes; to Lee's (literally) tortured performance as the undead protector of divine royalty, and so many references to Friday the 13th you'll be concerned for Ian's mental health--this episode dusts off an underappreciated classic and brings it to stunning new life!"Son of Hammerland" is Kicking the Seat's monthly journey into the non-Dracula-and-Frankenstein films from Hammer Studios!Show Links:Watch the Mummy (1959) trailer.Read Dr. AC's review of The Mummy.Catch up on previous "Son of Hammerland" episodes! And watch the series that started it all: "Hammerland"!Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

We travel to Dartmoor for our first episode of 2022, where we encounter the Hammer Studios version of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. A film in which Peter Cushing's status as an OG cosplayer leads to some exceptional authenticity; we learn the best way to present a ceremonial dagger to a suspect; the Bullingdon Club dry a half-drowned man out over an open fire; and Christopher Lee gets a good slap. Along the way we discuss Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own relationship with his most famous creation; the question of co-authorship with Bertram Fletcher Robinson; and the many folktales and myths that fuelled the original story. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. APOLOGIES FOR ANY SOUND/SPEECH QUALITY ISSUES - THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED REMOTELY, AT THE HEART OF THE GREAT GRIMPEN MIRE
