Celluloid Heroes: Episode 17Film: Back to the Future (1985)What can be said about Back to the Future that hasn't been said a million times already? The biggest hit of 1985, Robert Zemeckis' time-travel comedy is a classic film that defined the decade, spawned video games and a musical, and is as beloved today as it was 41 years ago. But what is the movie really about? The answer may surprise you, here, in a very special episode of the Celluloid Heroes Podcast taking us from Jimi Hendrix and Woodstock, to Sha-Na-Na on TV, to American Graffiti, Happy Days, and Grease, to the Hill Valley of 1985, 1955, and beyond.Follow Celluloid Heroes on INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/TheCelluloidHeroesPodFollow Brad Abraham at www.bradabraham.comShare your thoughts with us! Back to the Future Part III had a different job to do. Part II had ended on a cliffhanger and sent everybody out of the theater with their heads spinning, but the third film had to bring everything back down to earth, or maybe more accurately, out to the Old West. It was ending a story people had gotten very attached to and it had to do that without losing the sense of fun and invention that made the series feel special in the first place. We didn't go to the future with flying cars and flat screens. This time it was dust, horses, locomotives, and a version of the past that felt just as exciting. On this episode of the Retroist Podcast, I start with a memory from my time working at the mall. I spent a lot of lunched at the bookstore, where I kept running into a fan of the film who loved talking about where the series could go next. He was especially taken with the train at the end. He had no shortage of ideas about the sequels that could have followed if that machine had carried Doc and his family into one more adventure after another. These conversation say a lot about how Part III left people feeling. Even though it was the end, it still made us want to keep the story going. From there I get into the movie itself, its release, and why it worked for people then and still holds up now. Part III does not try to top Part II by getting more tangled with time travel nonsense. Instead, it gets simpler, warmer, and more character driven. It gives Marty a chance to face something in himself, and it gives Doc a story that is not just about invention or danger, but about love, risk, and finally building a life outside his invention. It also has a very different look, taking Hill Valley and peeling it back into something rougher and more mythic. I also talk about the cast, the making of the film, the music, and the way Part III completes the trilogy with a lot more confidence than it sometimes gets credit for. The first movie may be the cleanest and Part II may be the complex, but Part III has its own place because it knows how to end things well. It turns the series into something bigger than a time travel gimmick. By the end, it feels like a story about growing up, letting go, and deciding that the future is not something you chase, but something you make.
Bob Gale joins Byte for a look into two of the most inventive storytelling challenges in the Back to the Future trilogy: revisiting 1955 with two Martys running around at once, and crafting the Old West setting that defines Back to the Future Part III.
Sí, has leído bien. Bienvenidos al lado más extraño de la trilogía más querida del cine. This Christmas we are going to London by way of Hill Valley with special guest Jesse Ryals. This Endorian Life is a Nostalgic podcast from the Radio Meanwhile Network.
Aquí empieza nuestro viaje a 140 km/h.

[School of Movies 2025] We return to the format of the first film, trapped in a specific, focused time period, lovingly recreated for modern audiences. The big obstacles to be overcome are both based on the ticking clock point-of-no-return, and are unexpectedly and deeply personal for our protagonist. This one is Emmet's movie. While Marty still has to learn a harsh lesson about whether other people think he's chicken or not, he is on a rescue mission and this third film puts Doc Brown front and centre. This is because being saved from temporal exile and murder-by-Tannen externally pales in comparison to the urgency in which Emmett must save himself internally, philosophically, and in key regard to his until-today strained relationship with the rest of the human race beyond Marty. Christopher Lloyd brings it, in this sweetly tragic, broken-and-mended love story through time, opposite the luminous Mary Steenburgen as doomed schoolmistress Clara Clayton in the Hill Valley of 1885. This is a bittersweet goodbye that punctuates this madcap, majestic trilogy with a firm and definite full-stop, ending on the highest of notes that defies all modern conventions of the permanent strip-mining of exhausted IPs. Guest: Jesse Ferguson @TheDapperDM from the Recorded Tomorrow Podcast Those early Digital Gonzo shows can be found on the School of Movies Archive podcast feed. Strap in and charge up the Mr Fusion, because this week on Born To Watch, the boys head back, forward and sideways through time with our full Back to the Future Part 2 (1989) Review. Whitey, G Man and Will settle into the DeLorean for one of the most ambitious sequels of the 1980s, breaking down timelines, hoverboards, self-lacing Nikes and all the glorious 80s optimism jammed into Robert Zemeckis' wild ride. The episode kicks off with the crew riffing on 1989 as a powerhouse movie year, then quickly dives into how Back to the Future Part 2 faced enormous expectations. With a to be continued tease at the end of the original, fans were primed, and the pressure was real. As the boys say, sequels rarely outshine their predecessors, but every now and then you get an Empire Strikes Back or a T2. So where does this one land?Whitey shares how the film was a childhood favourite, the one he rewatched the most, and how time has shifted his appreciation back to the original. Gow reveals he saw it at the cinema on release and has clocked well over 15 viewings since, instantly transported by Alan Silvestri's iconic score. Will talks about how the franchise has simply always been there, one of those movies that defined growing up.From there, the episode fires through the good, the bad and the very strange. There's deep love for the hoverboard, the power-lace Nikes, and that brilliant rooftop confrontation where Marty lures Biff over the edge before swooping up in the DeLorean. The crew gives full credit to the groundbreaking split-screen effects, the energy of Michael J. Fox juggling multiple characters, and the perfect dual performance from Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who are operating at peak one-two punch level. They also dig into the weird bits the film never fully explains. Could Old Biff actually operate the DeLorean? Why does he get sick travelling through time when no one else ever has? Why do Jennifer and Jennifer faint from seeing each other, but Biff does not? How does Marty not realise Hill Valley 1985 has turned into a dystopian biker slum the moment he steps out of the car? From Jaws 19 to the brilliant Jaws VHS window cameo, from Indiana Jones nods to manure trucks, the boys unpack every Easter egg this film throws at you. And of course, there's a big chat about whether Biff Tannen's alternate 1985 persona is really just 80s Donald Trump in a green tracksuit. (Spoiler, yes.)The episode also dives into box office numbers, casting trivia, Elizabeth Shue stepping in as Jennifer, and some cracking tangents, including Huey Lewis, yacht rock, Stranger Things, The Little Mermaid, and even John Farnham fronting LRB.By the time the boys reach question time, they've covered everything from the butterfly effect through to whether a single rich bloke can really break the fabric of time. It's pure Born To Watch chaos, big laughs and deep nostalgia for one of the great sequels of our generation. If you love time travel, manure trucks and three blokes talking absolute cinematic nonsense, make sure you follow Born To Watch on Spotify and Apple. [School of Movies 2025] A sequel where the plot is hugely influenced by one of the original cast members playing hardball for a higher fee and getting left off the project should not be this great, and yet here we are. Likewise, the whole first act being set in the (then) faraway future of 2015 was almost entirely only there to fulfil promises from the end of the first film (even if Marty and Jennifer being in the timeline twice actually doesn't even make sense). How is it still wonderful? A second film that utilises time travel to go back to the first from a new angle in such a singular and unique fashion that any subsequent occurrence is shorthand "doing a Back to the Future II", this also presents us with a nightmare dark alternate timeline where a gaudy, dangerous moron becomes so powerful that he pretty much ruins America. Thankfully none of us have to live in THAT reality. Most of all though, of the three films this is the most lively, taking the form of a time-hopping adventure and allowing the two amazing leads to play off each other and the wildly up-for-it support cast, aging and de-aging across sixty changing years of Hill Valley. Guest: Jesse Ferguson @TheDapperDM from the Recorded Tomorrow Podcast Those early Digital Gonzo shows can be found on the School of Movies Archive podcast feed. Send us a textGreat Scott! Some movies don't just age well, they keep gaining power like a clock tower in a storm. We unpack why Back to the Future still crackles: a script that pays off every setup, characters who change in ways you can feel, and time travel rules that invite geeky debate without derailing the fun. From the Save the Clock Tower flyer to Uncle Joey's “bars” and the Twin Pines to Lone Pine switch, we map the film's breadcrumbs and show how tight writing creates timeless rewatch value. We get obsessive about the timeline, too. Marty's trip to 1955 unfolds over a week we can actually chart, and the story's paradoxes: bootstrap loops, butterfly ripples, the photo fade, work together instead of fighting each other. We also talk texture: why the DeLorean is the perfect sci‑fi icon, how Biff's blundering menace gives the story bite, and why those Hill Valley sets feel alive in both eras. Then there's the alchemy of performance and music. Michael J. Fox plays panic as propulsion. Christopher Lloyd turns technobabble into wonder. Crispin Glover's physical comedy makes George's punch land like a symphony. And Alan Silvestri's score glues it all together, blasting heroism during the lightning strike and winking when history pivots. It's the rare blockbuster that mixes teen comedy, family drama, and sci‑fi puzzle with confidence, reminding us how bold 80s filmmaking could be without franchise safety nets.If you love film craft, time travel logic, or just want that rush of cinematic joy, you're in the right feed. Step into the DeLorean with hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell as they revisit the mind-bending 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II. This zany time-traveling adventure pushes Marty McFly and Doc Brown to their limits as they navigate multiple timelines, alternate realities, and a dystopian version of Hill Valley ruled by the villainous Biff Tannen. The hosts dive deep into how Back to the Future Part II differs from its predecessor, noting its darker tone and more complex narrative structure. They explore how the film effectively splits into three distinct sections: the retro-futuristic 2015 sequence, the nightmarish alternate 1985, and the return to 1955 that cleverly interweaves with events from the first film. Nathan shares his initial disappointment with the sequel upon its 1989 release, while Krissy maintains her longtime love for its imaginative storytelling.Special praise is given to the performances, particularly Thomas F. Wilson's versatility in playing multiple versions of Biff Tannen and Lea Thompson's range as various incarnations of Lorraine. The hosts also discuss how the film introduced many viewers to concepts like the multiverse and alternate timelines through Doc Brown's simple yet effective explanation of the space-time continuum.Other topics covered:The film's prescient portrayal of Biff as a Trump-like figure in the alternate 1985The extensive merchandising campaign, including Pizza Hut's promotional sunglassesChristopher Lloyd's ageless performance as Doc BrownHow the film serves as part one of a larger story concluding in Back to the Future Part IIIThe practical effects and set design used to transform Hill Valley across different time periodsThe controversial addition of Marty's "chicken" character flawThe enduring appeal of the film's retro-futuristic 2015 aestheticThe Universal Studios clock tower set and its various iterationsWhile rating the film, Nathan gives it a 7.5 out of 10 sports almanacs, noting how his appreciation has grown over time, while Krissy awards it a solid 9, placing it just below the perfect 10s she gives to parts one and three. The hosts conclude that while Part II may be the most divisive entry in the trilogy, its ambitious storytelling and creative world-building have helped it age into a unique and essential chapter in the Back to the Future saga. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Welcome to Episode 115 of The Filmumentaries Podcast. This time I'm talking to John Bell, a concept artist and art director whose career has spanned some of the most memorable films of the last four decades. From Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to Jurassic Park and Back to the Future II and III,John's work has left a significant mark on cinema. In our conversation, John takes us back to the early days of his career, when he transitioned from designing cars at General Motors to creating video game concepts at Atari, before finally finding his way into the film industry. He shares the story of how a speculative portfolio sent to ILM eventually opened the door to a career that included working alongside legends like Nilo Rodis-Jamero and Ken Ralston. We talk in depth about his work on Back to the Future II, where he imagined a future Hill Valley steeped in a mix of Americana and 1980s aesthetics, and Jurassic Park, where he brought bold, colorful designs to vehicles, props, and even the park's iconic branding. John also reflects on how collaboration is at the heart of filmmaking, with directors like Steven Spielberg and production designers like Rick Carter encouraging his input while shaping the look and feel of these projects. We also cover his time working on Antz at DreamWorks, where he stepped into the role of production designer for the first time, and Rango, ILM's first animated feature.Throughout, John shares his approach to balancing creativity and problem-solving, and the importance of pulling inspiration from both his surroundings and his past experiences. It's a wide-ranging discussion that touches on everything from the challenges of designing for science fiction, fantasy, and animation to how the industry has changed over the years. I hope you enjoy it.All the links

Edgar Allan Poe's shaved muse. First Time you saw the movie? Plot: TOP 51. It's partly responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating.Truth be told, it's Steven Spielberg who is really responsible for the introduction of the PG-13 rating. Both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which he directed, and Gremlins, which he executive produced, were rated PG upon their release, and subsequently criticized for not being kid-appropriate. To avoid being slapped with an R rating in the future, Spielberg suggested that the MPAA add a rating between PG and R. On August 10, 1984, Red Dawn became the first movie to be released with the new PG-13 rating. 2. Howie Mandel is the voice of Gizmo. It was the suggestion of voice actor Frank Welker, who voiced Stripe in Gremlins (and Fred on Scooby-Doo before that), that Howie Mandel be hired for the role. Phoebe Cates was a controversial casting choice.Given her sweet demeanor as Kate, it's hard to imagine that not everyone was on board with casting Cates. But her infamous topless scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High gave the studio pause about putting her in the lead. Kingston Falls and Hill Valley are one and the same.If the fictional town of Kingston Falls in Gremlins looks familiar, that's because it was filmed on the same set used for the town of Hill Valley in Back to the Future, which wasreleased a year later. At one point, Gizmo and Stripe were supposed to be the same creature. It was also at Spielberg's suggestion that Gizmo's role in the film grew. Originally, it's the cute little Mogwai pet himself who transforms into Stripe the Gremlin. But Spielberg knew that audiences would want to see as much of Gizmo as possible, so he withdrew the idea so that they would appear as totally separate characters. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**Trey 3Chris 1.5Stephen 2.5Tucker 2 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Ahoy Motherfuckers! There wasn't supposed to be a sequel to Back to the Future, and when the sequel was made, it wasn't supposed to be set in the future. It also wasn't supposed to do anything more than to set up the third movie in the trilogy, which was already made when the sequel came out. The movie is beloved, not because of the storyline, per se but because of the scientific advancements that the storyline provided to future time-traveling movies. The rules that they created in Hill Valley still resound loudly 33 years later. We are joined by Cee Brandon and we discuss just how important this movie truly is. Enjoy. Drop your socks and head to Hill Valley. It's back to the future on Cadillac Jack: My Second Act. Somebody told Kane Brown you can only host CMT Awards two years in a row. We are… not going to correct him. (Because he's too calming.) Regardless, we do want to know how much of Monday's show was pre-recorded. Spoiler alert: it's probably more than we all expect. Then Donna talks about how to handle turbulence, whether it's on a plane or in a family. It's a serious, sentimental segment. So naturally, we go straight from there into why one pod peep "is 99% sure she saw the beaver." The show ends with an interview that you may have heard before. Or at least, you may recognize the voices. Watch for the changes and try to keep up. Then write your own plinko and send it our way. 7704646024.

Enjoy Movies! Back in the early days of cinema, time travel movies were far and in between. In 1960 we got a cinematic interpretation of HG Wells's classic story, “The Time Machine”. “Planet of the Apes” revealed itself to be a time travel movie in 1968. The 70's and 80's gave us some more modern day methods of riding a time wave with things like “Time After Time”, “Somewhere in Time”, and “Timerider” But Time Travel became mainstream and common after a brand new idea in 1985 when Robert Zemeckis was finally able to bring his vision to screen in “Back to the Future”. We talk about why we enjoy this classic film, from the frenetic pace to the performances to the new rules of time travel, this story seemed to strike all the right notes. November 22, 1989 brought us the first of two sequels that were filmed back to back. Part II took us to a future that was fun and cheesy, but actually a little accurate. It also took Marty back to the past in 1955 where he had to find a way to save Doc, who was even further back in the past in 1885. Just a few months later on May 25, 1990 we got the conclusion where we see Hill Valley when it was just getting started in the old west. The finale focused more on Doc than Marty, and it raised the stakes of getting back to 1985. Jay and Shua remember times they saw it, even a trilogy marathon before the premiere of part III. Make sure you check out Jay's write-ups on Retrozap.com about the whole trilogy! Back to the Future Back to the Future Part II Back to the Future Part III Are you a fan of Back to the Future?
