What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, and I've got artist and author of the Banned Book Club series Ryan Estrada here to talk about! Yes, we really get into the “Gremlins” original script by Chris Columbus and its novelization by George Gipe!In the original script, Billy is fantasy author and sticks up for himself much more. Of course, the gremlins themselves are also more vicious. Gone is the good mogwai character of Gizmo. In fact, they kill and eat the dog, decapitate Billy's mom, and eat some McDonald's customers (rather than the food). Thankfully, Joe Dante lightened the tone and brought in some humor. In contrast to the mysterious thriller of Columbus, Gipe expands the backstory of the creatures. In his origin, the mogwai were genetically engineered by an alien named Mogturmen to be gifts and peace offerings to neighboring worlds. Unfortunately, he miscalculated, and the gifts turned out to be mischievous and murderous pests. Can't win ‘em all, I guess.Medieval sword replica? Check. Alien geneticist? Yup. Gremlin in a toolbox thrown into a lake? Only if you want to setup a sequel! So grab your sword, save your crush, and kill some little green monsters to this episode on the “Gremlins” original script and novelization!RyanEstrada.comIG: @ryaneatradadotcomFB: @RyanEstradaGive us a buzz! In this episode of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Paul Gipe, an author, advocate, and analyst of the renewable energy industry. Paul is a world renowned wind power expert, and has written extensively about the subject for the past four decades, receiving numerous awards for his efforts. Gipe has lectured before groups from Patagonia to Puglia, from Tasmania to Toronto, and from Halifax to Husum. He has spoken to audiences as large as 10,000 and as small as a private presentation for Vice President Al Gore. He is also passionate about electric vehicles and writes about his experience driving EVs.Through his website, Gipe is well known for his frank appraisal of the promise and pitfalls of wind energy, including his stinging critiques of internet wonders and the hustlers and charlatans who promote them. His most recent book, Wind Energy for the Rest of Us, is Gipe's seventh book on wind energy. In it, he debunks novel wind turbines, rebukes revisionist historians, and argues that renewable energy is too important to be left to electric utilities.Gipe's interest in wind energy grew out of his wish to limit the environmental effects of conventional energy sources, particularly those of coal and nuclear power. He contributed to the seven-year struggle for passage of the National Surface Mining Act, which regulates the strip mining of coal in the United States. As part of that effort, Gipe co-authored Surface Mining, Energy, and the Environment and was invited to the White House by President Jimmy Carter for the signing ceremony. He and Ted discuss the wind energy industry at large, highlighting technological advancements in design, commercial vs. residential uses, offshore "floaters" vs. on land turbines, and solar vs. wind cost efficiency. They also share their love for driving EVs.

Stuart Scheller resigns, US leaves behind materials in Afghanistan, Project Veritas exposes teacher Gabriel Gipe, Kristin Pitzen makes kids pledge to rainbow flag, Michael Byrd shot Ashli Babbitt, Hans von Spakovsky on missing ballots, True The Vote exposes voter fraud. A Marine Corps lieutenant colonel who was relieved of command Friday due to a now-viral social media video demanding “accountability” from senior leadership released a new video Sunday, in which he appears to resign his commission as a Marine Corps officer. US troops left behind everything from energy drinks to armored vehicles when they abandoned a key base in Afghanistan in the dead of night The California superintendent who is presiding over the firing of a pro-Antifa, pro-Communism teacher admitted that he does not know whether the teacher's alleged attempts to indoctrinate his classes had been reported by concerned parents or students before a Project Veritas video exposed them. He asked any parent or student who had previously reported the teacher to reach out. Natomas Unified School District Superintendent Chris Evans told Fox News Thursday that district investigators have so far been unable to locate any reports from concerned families. But he said that if they exist – that's another problem that needs to be addressed. On Wednesday, Evans announced that Natomas Unified had begun taking the necessary legal steps toward firing teacher Gabriel Gipe as a result of an internal investigation prompted by the Project Veritas video. A California teacher who went viral after bragging in a TikTok video that she had taken down the American flag in her classroom because it made her feel "uncomfortable" and suggested that her students should say the Pledge of Allegiance to a rainbow flag has been removed from her classroom. "She has been removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave, as our investigation continues," Newport Mesa Schools spokesperson Annette Franco confirmed to Fox News Wednesday. The teacher was identified as Kristin Pitzen of Newport Mesa Schools in Orange County. Capitol Polica Lt. Michael Byrd says he saved countless lives by shooting female unarmed United Stated Veteran Ashli Babbitt. Hans von Spakovsky, manager of the Heritage Foundation's Election Law Reform Initiative and a senior legal fellow of the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, said president Joe Biden's margins of victory in Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin in the 2020 presidential election were narrower than the states' respective totals of unaccounted-for ballots. Biden's margin of victory in Wisconsin was approximately 20,000 votes despite the number of ballots “missing or undeliverable” in the state amounting to 83,000, von Spakovsky noted. “Remember the margin of victory in Wisconsin was only 20,000 votes, and that basically 82,000 ballots were either lost or undeliverable or were rejected,” von Spakovsky said on Wednesday's edition of SiriusXM's Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow. “That's four times the margin of victory.” Conservative election integrity group True The Vote has been conducting a months-long massive and clandestine voter fraud investigation into the 2020 presidential election, the results of which may soon start coming out, Breitbart News has learned exclusively. A document that the group's founder Catherine Engelbrecht circulated to prospective donors, obtained by Breitbart News, details several facets of the investigation—which centers on what the group describes as the collection of cell phone GPS ping data in key election hotspots around the country including Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

It was just a really fascinating discussion. Yeah. So our guest today is Paul  and if you're not familiar with Paul, then. I guess, where have you been? I mean, Paul, Paul's been all over the web for a long time, uh, covering, uh, wind energy. He's been sort of like a wind energy lifer, uh, has worked as, I mean, I'm looking through his bio here. It's hard to know where to start, but a policy analyst for numerous organizations over the years. Um, he's been a principal in firms, uh, evaluating wind turbine technology. He's written eight books on wind turbines, his most recent one, Wind Energy For The Rest of Us: A Comprehensive Guide to Wind Power and How To Use It, is a, just a huge reference for everything when energy. I mean, it's, if you want to know about small wind turbines, big wind turbines, ducted, the history of them, all the, you know, materials failure, like easily got so many case studies in there. Um, so we, we reached out to Paul Gipe because he's just seems like one of the, again, like the wind energy lifers who has spent a significant amount of his career, you know, fighting the good fight essentially for wind energy. Yeah. And it's, it's one of those really nice people to come across a that you meet in the wind turbine industry that just has a lot of history. And especially the technical side he's know he's a good combination of the technical aspects and the policy aspects, because we don't get into too much, but there's a lot of governmental policy and regulations that play in the electric market. Altogether and, and Paul kind of ties the two together, which was really hard. Yeah. So back in 2004, uh, Paul was working or started working as the acting executive director for the Ontario sustainable energy association. He's talked a bunch about his work over in Canada and, and some of the, just the great things they've done with renewable energy over there. Um, and now, like you said, we, we talk, uh, so kind of like the scope of this conversation. We talk a little bit, a bit. In the beginning about, um, electric vehicles. Cause he has a current, a big passion for the electric car he drives. And as a guy who's just overall interested in saving the planet, interested in renewable energy, interested in green energy. And you know, he refers to himself as, as a, as a greenie, uh, which Paul's, Paul's a funny guy. Um, but he's been around the whole, you know, We talk about solar. We talk about wind and small wind, and there's been a lot of challenges. And like you said down, and there's not only mechanical and engineering and technology challenges, but he talks a lot about the fights and, uh, just the, the difficulty in getting policy changes that are going to make wind more viable. And, and one of the things he speaks to is, uh, the fact that we should be farther along today. Then we are, yeah, we should always be farther along or that's al...

Imagine you're Chris Columbus, y'know, the dude who wrote The Goonies, but before that. Oh, and before you directed Home Alone... and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York... and two Harry Potter Films... and Adventures in Babysitting. Imagine you are living in squalor and the rats in your New York City apartment inspire you to write about creepy crawlers. Then, suppose Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws, E.T., and Indiana Jones buys that script and wants to produce it. Without that almost unfathomably unlikely series of events, we would not have this week's episode on Gremlins. Columbus' initial draft of the script was much grimmer, featuring the death of Barney, our hero's beloved pup, decapitations, and much more. The script underwent many rewrites, with several members of the cast and crew indicating they settled around 10! Directed by Joe Dante (Piranha, The Howling, Masters of Horror) this small budget holiday film was an incredible financial success, spawning a sequel and two international theme park rides! The special effects were by Chris Walas (The Fly, Return of the Jedi, Humanoids from the Deep), who proudly boasted that many effects in the final cut of the film were developed just the day before shooting. There were so many puppets and practical effects in the film that they lost count. In several sequences, puppeteers had to have a puppet on each hand and even on top of their heads! Zach Galligan (Waxwork, Hatchet 3, Nightbeasts) plays Billy Peltzer. Billy has aspirations of much more than being a bank teller and is entrusted with great responsibility by his father, played by Hoyt Axton, when he is given an incredibly unique Christmas present. Gizmo, Billy's Christmas present, is played by Howie Mandel (Little Monsters). Phoebe Cates (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Drop Dead Fred) plays basically the antithetical role to her red-bikini-wearing seductress, and plays Kate, a well-intentioned, hard working small town girl. She also gives one of, if not my absolute favorite monologues in all of film history. Corey Feldman play's Billy's friend, Pete. If you are confused as to why Billy is so much older than his little friend (*in Scarface voice*) it is because Billy was originally the same age, until he was aged in later drafts of the script. The film has some astounding cameo talent from the late Dick Miller to Judge Reinhold. While the movie is all the better for it, unfortunately the majority of Reinhold's part was cut, as the unnecessary real estate subplot was left on the cutting room floor. Miller, who plays the somewhat soothsaying Murray Futterman, was so excellent in this bit part that he was brought back for the sequel: Gremlins 2: The New Batch. In this episode, we review the film delve into the history and trivia, and Jake gives his hair-brained theory as to why this film, The Howling, and Indiana Jones are all in a shared universe. We also take excerpts from the very bizarre novelization of the film by George Gipe. Gipe also did novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers! By this point, he had also written The Man with Two Brains! Bourdain's Work. Or Once Again, We Must Be Speakers for the Dead. We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a semi-regular segment here at Edacious. A segment where I rant about a food topic so much on my mind, it warrants its own episode. Anthony Bourdain can't be summed up in a soundbite or a quote. His body of work stands for his name. Nor will I add anything better than what's already been written or said. There are hundreds of Speakers better than me, including Mike Costello of 100 Days in Appalachia. Bourdain wasn't even my favorite food writer, but he was the door. The very first door I opened onto a world I knew nothing about and one I'm so glad I stepped through. I loved his work, honest, ballsy, gritty, truth-telling. Sentences with a heft that sat on the page like granite. I fucking loved the way he wrote, and what he stood for. Connecting over food. He did this every minute of every day. And he taught me to do the same. Bourdain believed when someone cooks you a meal, they are revealing something about themselves. I believe that too. Cooking or baking for someone else is the highest form of love there is. Which is why I chose a decade ago to honor the millions of folks who do so each and every day. And while I can't add anything to the conversation, I do talk about it. Wonder about it. And I urge you all to remember self-care. Maybe get off the phone once in a while, take a walk, see some stuff. Do some shit. Live your life. Preferably with periods of solitude in nature. Don't work so damn much. Maybe if Tony had, we'd still have him. Be well. Big Love. p.s. Did you snag a Bourdain book at my last food writing class? Check the flyleaf. It might be a signed copy ;) Don't say I never did nothin for ya... If you are feeling depressed or suicidal. Get help. Ask someone, even if they're a stranger. Dessert Work. With Sheri Castle and Ronni Lundy at The Virginia Festival of the Book. Welcome to my latest episode! Were you a bad food enthusiast? Did you miss "Save Room for Dessert! Cookbooks With A Sweet Tooth!" at the Virginia Festival of the Book? No worries, Edacious taped it for you! It might be May, but we're still celebrating. In this exclusive panel moderated by yours truly. Sheri Castle was born in Boone, North Carolina. The Queen of Hustle, Sheri is a professional food writer, culinary instructor, and public speaker known for melding storytelling, humor, and culinary expertise. She wrote her first recipe at 4 years old, mailed it to a TV show, and never looked back. She's written three books, been in countless magazines, and appeared on Vivian Howard's show, A Chef's Life. Her books have been IACP Award finalists, won the SIBA award, and been mentioned in the New York Times and Washington Post. Nigella Lawson (yes THAT Nigella) counts herself a fan and has made recipes from her latest book, Rhubarb, on her website. "We always had rhubarb...I love it raw...I can remember when I was little going up to the garden and snapping off stalks...whereas my grandmother would sprinkle salt on hers...I would take a cup or a handful of Tang...and dip rhubarb in the Tang and eat it that way." ---Sheri Castle "That is a characteristic of Appalachian food and Southern food in general. It's very agrarian, it's very resourceful, and it is knowing how to make the best of what you have. And sometimes what you have is modest and sometimes it's glorious but it's knowing how to do right by ingredients and give them regard and dignity." ---Sheri Castle Ronni Lundy was born in Corbin, Kentucky and has spent much of her life chronicling the people of the hillbilly diaspora as a journalist and cookbook author. Her book Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken was recognized by Gourmet magazine as one of six essential books on Southern cooking. In 2009, Lundy received the Southern Foodways Alliance Craig Claiborne Lifetime Achievement Award. She has contributed to Eating Well, Gourmet, Bon Appétit, Esquire, among many others. Her latest book, Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, With Recipes won the IACP 2017 American Cookbook of the Year, as well as two 2017 James Beard Foundation awards for American Cookbook of the Year and Book of the Year. Food historian and heirloom seed saver Bill Best called Victuals, "The 67th Book of the Bible!" Victuals explores the foodways of Appalachia, the most bio-diverse region in the world, including many located right here in Virginia. "Victuals is for me not just a story about food and sustainable foodways but it's also a way to illumine the people of this region in ways that people are often surprised by." ---Ronni Lundy  Both ladies have been past podcast guests and I consider them dear friends. In this talk, we explore rhubarb, its uses in dessert as well as in savory dishes, and Appalachian foodways and its history of preservation, resourcefulness, and sustainability, including desserts that most folks have never heard of like apple stack cake and caramel cake. As well as a host of other things including how social media has impacted recipes for both good and ill. Yes, we got off topic, but so what? All good conversations do. Enjoy these multiple-award-winning authors, and thanks so much to everyone who came out to listen. Cheers! "Because of social media and food tv...most people now assume a recipe to be a visual thing more than it is a written thing. And that can be both good and really burdensome sometimes too." ---Sheri Castle  "I used to get asked do you actually test your recipes and I used to find that an offensive question...although now there are books that are going out where people are not testing recipes which blows my mind!" ---Ronni Lundy SHOW NOTES – Links to resources talked about during the podcast: Sheri Castle was on the podcast before! Give a listen! Ronni Lundy appeared on this podcast a while back. Give a listen! Trampoline - This graphic novel by Robert Gipe is the most creative thing I've read in years. A young girl grows up in Appalachia, unwittingly becoming an environmental spokesperson for her region all the while getting into trouble she can't seem to get out of. Poignant, thoughtful, and hysterically funny. Gipe is a great new voice. I expect great things from him in the future. Click here to listen to an excerpt! In Praise of Ugly Food - Kat Kinsman ode to ugly edibles appears in the 2016 Best of Food Writing anthology. Flora Restaurant - Oaxacan cuisine with a great tequila selection. In Richmond. A bigger-than-size statue of a horse wearing a hazmat suit is the subject of the October 29, 2015 edition of Tell Somebody. Author and professor Kristen Iversen and artist Jeff Gipe joined us on the phone to talk about it. Rocky Flats, near Denver and Boulder, Colorado, was the site of a plant producing highly radioactive plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs since 1952. After major fires and other problems spread contamination over the site and the region, the plant was shut down and officials claim it is now cleaned up and safe. Until the installation of the Cold War Horse, nothing indicated that the plant, or the contamination, had ever been there. Iversen and Gipe will fill in some details about the site and the horse statue. Jeff Gipe, an artist now living in Brooklyn, NY, grew up near Rocky Flats, and his father worked at the plant for 20 years. He created the Cold War Horse to mark the site of the plutonium plant and to serve as a memorial to those who worked at the plant. Kristen Iversen author of Full Body Burden: Growing Up In the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats, and is a professor in the department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Cincinnati where she will introduce a new PhD program in literary non-fiction.
