Book Vs Movie: “Harper Valley PTA"The 1968 Song Vs the 1978 Movie (really!)(It's one of our favorite episodes from the past!) The song was written by Tom T. Hall and performed by country singer Jeannie C. Riley in 1968. The story about a “widowed bride” who is slut-shamed by her daughter's junior high school PTA (Parents Teachers Advisory) and gives a takedown at a meeting that is spectacular in its shade and incisiveness was one of the first feminist anthems and managed to become a number one hit in the U.S. on both the pop and country charts. (Past episode, Dolly Parton did the same in 1980 for 9 to 5!)The 1978 movie is an R-rated cuckoo bananas production starring Barbara Eden (a stone-cold fox!) as Stella Johnson, who exacts a Porky's style revenge on the local yokels who dare to take her on. She is also wooed by an equally sexy Ronny Cox and is teamed up with Nanette Fabray in this film that played in drive-in theaters in 1978 and made millions. It features nudity, wrap dresses, elephants, revenge porn, makeovers, and a helicopter proposal. So, between the song and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out! It's Die Hard underwater…with sharks! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we're diving headfirst into one of the wettest, wildest, and wackiest Die Hard riffs of the late '90s: DEEP BLUE SEA (1999), directed by none other than Renny Harlin! We're joined by special guest Justin LaLiberty - director of operations for Vinegar Syndrome and a key figure in the ongoing physical media renaissance - to talk shark attacks, elevator shafts, and Samuel L. Jackson's iconic “interrupted monologue” moment! From the unmistakable DIE HARD FRANCHISE DNA, to the undersea siege structure and classic containment premise, we trace just how much Deep Blue Sea swims in McClane-infested waters! We also discuss the unusual, uneven career of Thomas Jane, the effervescent magic of LL Cool J, and that bizarre Ronny Cox “cameo”! It's DIE HARD in an underwater lab full of brain-enhanced sharks, and it might just be the most fun you can have in a Renny Harlin flick that isn't Die Hard 2!DEEP BLUE SEA trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSz9MDN-iacAt the time of release, DEEP BLUE SEA is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango and all the usual platforms!Click here to subscribe to our Patreon feed 48 HOURS OF BUDDY MOVIES! fWotD Episode 2666: Total Recall (1990 film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 22 August 2024 is Total Recall (1990 film).Total Recall is a 1990 American science-fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Michael Ironside. Based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall tells the story of Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker who receives an implanted memory of a fantastical adventure on Mars. He subsequently finds his adventure occurring in reality as agents of a shadow organization try to prevent him from recovering memories of his past as a Martian secret agent aiming to stop the tyrannical regime of Martian dictator Vilos Cohaagen (Cox).Shusett bought the rights to Dick's short story in 1974 and developed a script with O'Bannon. Although considered promising, the ambitious scope kept the project in development hell at multiple studios over sixteen years, seeing forty script drafts, seven different directors, and multiple actors cast as Quaid. Total Recall eventually entered the early stages of filming in 1987 under the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group shortly before its bankruptcy. Schwarzenegger, who had long held an interest in the project but had been dismissed as inappropriate for the lead role, convinced Carolco Pictures to purchase the rights and develop the film with him as the star. On an estimated $48–80 million budget (making it one of the most expensive films made in its time), filming took place on expansive sets at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico over six months. Cast and crew experienced numerous injuries and illnesses during filming.Total Recall was anticipated to be one of the year's most successful films. On its release, the film earned approximately $261.4 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year. Its critical reception was mixed, with reviewers praising its themes of identity and questioning reality, but criticizing content perceived as vulgar and violent. The practical special effects were well received, earning the film an Academy Award, and the score by Jerry Goldsmith has been praised as one of his best works.Since its release, Total Recall has been praised for its ambiguous ending positing whether Quaid's adventures are real or a fantasy, and it has also been analyzed for themes of authoritarianism and colonialism. Retrospective reviews have called it one of Schwarzenegger's best films and placed it among the best science fiction films ever made. Alongside comic books and video games, Total Recall has been adapted into the 1999 television series Total Recall 2070. An early attempt at a sequel, based on Dick's The Minority Report, became the 2002 standalone film Minority Report, and a 2012 remake, also titled Total Recall, failed to replicate the success of the original. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:10 UTC on Thursday, 22 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Total Recall (1990 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Salli.

This week, after a 40th anniversary sequel went straight to Netflix, we're winding it back to a 23-year-old Eddie Murphy's breakout smash as a capital-M Movie Star. It's 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, and starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser. This one comes from J Mo's collection as it's a movie he's strangely never seen before, having been burned by other overhyped Murphy comedies of the 80s? Is this one worthy of the hype? We'll find out together, but if you've seen it I think you know. Plus: Hayley's watched Axel F. to see where this franchise is at after 40 years, while Justin's staying hydrated in the heat. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to this discussion, Beverly Hills Cop is currently streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+ in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Gladiator II, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, Speed Racer, Miami Vice (2006), Hot Rod, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Point Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, Charade, Driveaway Dolls, Maid, Blockers, Metro, Trading Places, Bowfinger, The Other Guys, The Santa Clause, True Romance, Scarface, Cobra and Tango & Cash among others. We're back next week to tee up Deadpool & Wolverine by watching Hugh Jackman's previous collaboration with director Shawn Levy: a silly sci-fi rock-em sock-em robot boxing movie from 2011 called Real Steel, with Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and free with ads on the CTV app. And of course, we'll close out the month of July by inducting Twister into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
fWotD Episode 2621: RoboCop Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 8 July 2024 is RoboCop.RoboCop is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity. The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner (1982), and he developed the idea with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Finding a director proved difficult; Verhoeven dismissed the script twice because he did not understand its satirical content, until he was convinced of its value by his wife. Filming took place between August and October 1986, mainly in Dallas, Texas. Rob Bottin led the special-effects team in creating practical effects, violent gore and the RoboCop costume.Verhoeven emphasized violence throughout the film, making it so outlandish that it became comical. Censorship boards believed that it was too extreme, however, and several scenes were shortened or modified to receive an acceptable theatrical rating. RoboCop was a financial success upon its release in July 1987, earning $53.4 million. Reviewers praised it as a clever action film with deeper philosophical messages and satire, but were conflicted about its extreme violence. The film was nominated for several awards, and won an Academy Award and a number of Saturn Awards.RoboCop has been critically reevaluated since its release, and it has been hailed as one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the greatest science fiction and action films ever made. The film has been praised for its depiction of a robot affected by the loss of humanity, in contrast to the stoic and emotionless robotic characters of that era. RoboCop has continued to be analyzed for its themes such as the nature of humanity, personal identity, corporate greed and corruption, and is seen as a rebuke of the era's Reaganomics policies. Its success created a franchise: the sequels RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993), children's animated series, live-action television shows, video games, comic books, toys, clothing and other merchandise. A remake was released in 2014.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:28 UTC on Monday, 8 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see RoboCop on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.
Send us a Text Message.Nothing beats the 80's when it comes to movies and nothing says 80's movies like 1984's "Beverly Hills Cop". Join us as we go back and watch a film that dominated the Box Office with laughs and all-out action. We have to admit, our hopes are high for this movie even though we have not seen it in a long time. But what can be better than Eddie Murphy in the 80s? Our only fear is that this movie might be outdated and seriously overrated. But with a cast that includes Ronny Cox, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Jonathan Banks & a ton more, we are confident this movie is still great. We're pretty sure this movie is still great. We hope this movie is still great. Let's cross our fingers and find out. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Send us a Text Message. On this 85th episode of Fabulous Film and Friends we are going to connect the dots between three seminal cautionary tales from the 80's: 1984's Repo Man directed by Alex Cox and starring Emelio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton, Olivia Barash, Jennifer Balgobin, Dick Rude, Tracey Walter, Sy Richardson, Vonetta McGee, Richard Foronjy, Tom Finnegan, Eddie Velez, Del Zamora, Zander Schloss, Fox Harris and Jimmy Buffet. Then 1987's River's Edge directed by Tim Hunter starring Keanu Reeves, Crispin Clover, Ione Skye, Daniel Roebuck, Joshua John Miller, Josh Richman, Roxana Zal, Jim Metzler, Tom Bower and Dennis Hopper and topped off with Robocop, also from 1987 and starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, Paul McCrane, Ray Wise, Jesse D. Goins, Felton Perry, Del Zamora, Dan O'Herlihy and the inimitable Ronny Cox. I'm Gino Caputi and returning to the program to break down all this cynicism and disaffected young adulthood are my sister Roseanne, the lit major, Joe Field, the author/hypnotist and back again after a long fitful stint in suspended animation, the photobug and funny man Gordon Alex Robertson!Okay before we suit up and start taking names, the synopses: In Repo Man, Otto, an LA punk, gets fired from his job as a grocery clerk but finds his true calling when a tough-talking stranger named Bud convinces Otto to join his team of auto repossession agents. Bud, Otto and the entire network of the repo men run into an existential crisis when a mysterious car that has a reward of 20k is believed to have an alien in its trunk. River's Edge is loosely based on true events and catalogues a turmoil of emotions or lack thereof that a group of teens encounter when they discover one of their friends, John aka Samson, has murdered his girlfriend while another friend, Layne, swears them all to secrecy. Robocop looks into the future where the Detroit police are privately owned by a corporation called Omni Consumer Product. After Alex Murphy a brave but naive officer is killed in the line of duty by a ruthless crime lord named Clarence Boddiker, Murphy's body is given to OCP for a pilot program that transforms Murphy into a cyborg called Robocop. Long-time supporter Kent and has picked another classic this week in Deliverance from 1972. And is also the last installment of our 3 week Burt Reynolds season! Check out a whole bunch of cool stuff Kent does on his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kentgustavsonphd. Deliverance, directed by John Boorman, was both ambitious and challenging, marked by its decision to shoot on location in the remote wilderness of northern Georgia. This choice lent the film an authentic and gritty atmosphere but also presented numerous logistical and safety challenges. The actors, including Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, performed many of their own stunts, including navigating the treacherous Chattooga River in canoes, which heightened the realism but also exposed them to significant risks. Burt Reynolds was injured while performing a canoe stunt when he was swept downriver and hit by rocks. The production team had to contend with the natural elements, which often made filming difficult and unpredictable, yet these same challenges contributed to the film's visceral and immersive quality. The production's commitment to authenticity extended beyond the physical challenges. Boorman chose to cast relatively unknown actors at the time to enhance the believability of the characters. The decision to film the infamous "Dueling Banjos" scene and other intense moments in natural settings without relying heavily on special effects or studio sets helped cement the film's raw and unsettling tone. Additionally, the script, adapted by James Dickey from his own novel, required delicate handling of its controversial themes, including graphic violence and sexual assault. Despite the difficulties faced during production, Deliverance emerged as a critical and commercial success, praised for its unflinching portrayal of survival and its exploration of human nature under duress. The film's stark realism, powerful performances, and haunting musical score have left a lasting impact on audiences and cinema history. Seeking adventure, their journey turns into a nightmare when they encounter hostile locals. After Bobby is brutally assaulted, the men are forced into a desperate fight for survival. Navigating the dangerous river and evading the vengeful mountain men, they must confront their own fears and primal instincts. The harrowing experience leaves them forever changed, highlighting the thin veneer of civilization and the raw brutality of human nature. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

We continue #MarchMadness with a movie that's not exactly about sports per se, but does feature a lot of running which is not just a form of self-torture, as some might think, but a sport! The film is a passion project for actor Ronny Cox, who also co-wrote the movie with his wife Mary, and depicts Cox and two other runners as they become targets of a survivalist militant group in the New Mexico desert! M. Emmet Walsh leads the group who warns of the terrifying, and wholly unexplained, "crunch" that is coming for us all, We also discuss Marc's new side podcast and nutrition drink, Erica feels good about a certain life choice, and Ryan gets grossed out by feet! Don't miss this discussion of a rarely discussed New World film!
It's March, so that means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Get Your Ass to March” series! Where we cover movies that relate to the planet Mars and/or the 1990 sci-fi classic, Total Recall! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt kick off the series by discussing a movie that satisfies BOTH qualifiers, Paul Verhoeven's 1990 sci-fi classic, Total Recall!Hologram gags! Explosive decompression! Disturbingly inhuman, cab-driving robots! A classic musical score from Jerry Goldsmith! Bone-crunching sound FX! The psychic space mutant, Kuato! The quickest divorce you've ever seen! Possibly the greatest human-shield in movie history! Incredible, kinda-gross-looking practical FX from the reclusive and legendary Rob Bottin! A wonderful cast that includes an unrecognizable Hank from Breaking Bad, Michael Ironside's weird run, Ronny Cox playing his character from RoboCop, Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin in a rough & tumble girl fight, and Arnold Schwarzenegger delivering some of the greatest one-liners of his career! The satirical carnage of Paul Verhoeven meets the larger-than-life theatrics of an Arnold movie in this exploration of class, capitalism, and the hidden desires of the human psyche! The planet Mars never looked so good! In addition, Alex shamefully admits that he had never seen the Nicolas Cage/John Cusack action-banger, Con-Air, until recently, and shares his spoiler-free thoughts! You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
