Hey Smarties! We’re taping today’s episode of Make Me Smart live from Seattle. We’ll have the show in your feeds soon. But for now, enjoy a rerun of one of our favorite episodes of the year so far. With all the rage tweets about gas stoves, it may be hard to believe, but climate change wasn't always so polarizing. Studies show that public opinion on the topic started to splinter in the 1990s, when governments and corporations had to reckon with the threat of a warming planet. “Prior to 1997, it was a conversation among a bunch of scientists, but once the Kyoto treaty came, it became an issue that affected powerful political and economic interests,” said Andrew Hoffman, professor of sustainable enterprise at the University of Michigan and author of “How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate.” On the show today: Hoffman explains how climate change became a partisan issue, the financial and economic interests that got us to where we are today, and what might get us back to some common ground. In the News Fix, guest host Amy Scott tells us about an ad campaign bringing attention to gender bias in internet search results. Plus, we'll explain why classified documents in surprising places is more common than you might expect. And stick around for the TL;DR on Elon Musk's trial over what he said about Tesla on Twitter (the social media platform he now owns). Later, we'll hear from a listener who did the math on the cost-effectiveness of fueling up with diesel vs. gas, and a loyal listener makes us smarter about our own theme music! Here's everything we talked about today: “Climate Science as Culture War” from the Stanford Social Innovation Review A widening gap: Republican and Democratic views on climate change from Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development “For Earth Day, key facts about Americans' views of climate change and renewable energy” from Pew Research Center “Politics & Global Warming, March 2018” from Yale Program on Climate Communication “How the humble gas stove became the latest flash point in the culture wars” from The Washington Post “Wyoming lawmaker behind electric-vehicle ban says he didn't mean it” from The Washington Post “The business opportunity that is climate change” from Marketplace “Correct The Internet & DDB NZ on a mission to highlight bias against women's sport” from The Drum “Global ‘Correct the Internet' campaign launches to make sportswomen more visible via DDB NZ” from Campaign Brief “Classified Documents Found at Mike Pence's Home” from The Wall Street Journal “Elon Musk Securities-Fraud Trial” from Bloomberg It's a new year, and we're looking for new answers to the Make Me Smart question. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to DAVE MARTIN who has increased his Patreon support. And ROD DILKES is a new PRODUCER of the podcast.   TAYCAN HELPS PORSCHE RECOVER IN THE UNITED STATES "Porsche's sales in the United States, its second-largest global market, took a significant hit earlier in 2020 as lock-downs swept across the nation. Its recovery has been quicker than expected, and company CEO Oliver Blume told Autoblog that strong demand for the electric Taycan has helped it turn the situation around." reports Autoblog: "Launched earlier in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the Taycan (pictured) now stands proud as Porsche's third-best-selling model, behind the Macan and the Cayenne and ahead of the Panamera. Upcoming new variants, like the Cross Turismo station wagon expected to break cover in the coming months, will ensure demand for the model stays high."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/11/06/porsche-taycan-sales-recovery-us/   GENESIS ‘GV60’ EV PROTOTYPE SPOTTED, TO USE RIMAC TECH "Genesis has been spotted test driving an interesting prototype in Korea, with signs suggesting this could be the company’s first dedicated fully electric vehicle, dubbed the GV60. It’s set to slot into the company’s showroom as a crossover-style vehicle, somewhere in between the GV70 and GV80." according to Performance Drive: "We can probably think of it as a Genesis alternative to the Jaguar I-PACE, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQC. And the Tesla Model Y for that matter. Although, there’s also been suggestion of it being slightly smaller. Genesis is yet to confirm any details, however, it’s understood the vehicle will be underpinned by Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture (Electric Global Modular Platform). According to a recent Korean Car Blog report, the GV60 is codenamed JW, featuring all-wheel drive and a modular battery system to provide different ranges and power outputs. Genesis is likely to adopt technology from Rimac for its upcoming EVs, as part of Hyundai Motor Group’s recent partnership. Earlier in 2019 the two companies entered an agreement, with Hyundai investing 64 million euros and Kia investing 16 million euros."   https://performancedrive.com.au/genesis-gv60-ev-prototype-spotted-to-use-rimac-tech-0620/   VW’S BOSS: WE DON’T WANT TO END UP LIKE NOKIA "Volkswagen AG is at a critical juncture. It has weathered the pandemic relatively well but is fretting about cases going up again. It has electric cars rolling out but is well behind Tesla Inc. And it has massive manufacturing scale but desperately needs to rethink its vehicles as rolling software devices." reports Bloomberg: "It’s this last issue that Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess drives home with VW’s more than 635,000 employees. The transition in competencies from industrial might to software prowess will be an immense challenge for automakers that are vast, deliberate and some say ripe for disruption. Car companies that get it wrong risk ending up like Nokia Oyj—failed hardware makers doomed by more nimble and technologically adept upstarts." “Nokia is probably a good example of how such a change can happen—if you’re not fast enough, you’re not going to survive,” Diess, 62, told Bloomberg at VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. “I’m always telling our people this example.”"   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-11-06/vw-s-boss-warns-the-troops-we-don-t-want-to-end-up-like-nokia   VOLKSWAGEN TRANSFORMS TROPICAL ISLAND INTO ELECTRIC CAR PARADISE "As part of its strategy to become carbon neutral by 2050, Volkswagen is transforming the tropical Greek island of Astypalea into a "model island for climate-neutral mobility." Welcome to EV paradise. As part of the six-year project, new vehicle and ride-sharing services will be introduced to help reduce traffic and energy will be generated by green power sources such as solar and wind." reports CarBuzz: "The new transport system with digital mobility services will include an all-electric year-round ridesharing service that will replace the island's local bus service. Around 1,000 electric vehicles will replace roughly 1,500 combustion-powered cars as VW starts introducing new electric ID. models like the Volkswagen ID.3 compact and the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover to the market. Commercial vehicles, police cars, emergency vehicles, and public sector fleets will also be electrified. To cater for the increased number of EVs on the island, Volkswagen will install a comprehensive charging infrastructure with around 230 private and several public charging points."   https://carbuzz.com/news/volkswagen-transforms-tropical-island-into-electric-car-paradise   HYUNDAI-KIA OFFICIALLY JOINTS IONITY HIGH POWER CHARGING "The Hyundai Motor Group’s entry into the Ionity fast-charging network is now official. The Korean company through its Hyundai and Kia brands holds a 20 per cent stake in the Europe-wide high power charging network founded by BMW, Ford, Daimler and Volkswagen." says electrive: " It is now clear that the Korean company will also receive 20 per cent of Ionity’s shares as the fifth carmaker in the mix.. We are yet waiting to hear how the partnership may fit into the latest charging service that Hyundai-Kia had launched together with Digital Charging Solutions (DCS) under the labels Charge myHyundai and KiaCharge. Kia will introduce KiaCharge in seven countries this autumn, starting with Italy, Poland and Spain, followed by Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland. UK customers may expect the charging service to come active in the fourth quarter of 2020. Hyundai expects the service to launch in six countries, namely France, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic this autumn."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/05/hyundai-kia-officially-joints-ionity/   TESLA TO INSTALL ANOTHER GIANT BATTERY IN AUSTRALIA "French renewable energy company Neoen and Tesla will partner to install another one of the world’s largest lithium-ion batteries in Australia.  The contract with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) will allow Neoen to move to the next phase of its 300 MW/450 MWh Victorian Big Battery in Geelong, which will become one of the world’s largest batteries, at twice the size of the Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia." reports CleanTechnica: "The battery will use Tesla’s Megapack technology and AusNet Services will be the network partner, according to Neoen.  Independent analysis showed that for every $1 invested, the battery will deliver more than $2 in benefits to Victorian homes and businesses. Independent reviews show that Neoen’s Hornsdale Power Reserve delivered more than $150 million AUD in savings during its first two years of operation."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/11/05/tesla-to-install-another-giant-battery-in-australia/   GENERAL MOTORS NOW HIRING FOR ULTIUM CELLS BATTERY PLANT IN OHIO "General Motors just announced that it’s seeking to add 1,100 new team members to the Ultium Cells LLC battery production plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The facility will mass-produce Ultium battery cells for use in General Motors’ upcoming range of all-electric vehicle offerings." says GMAuthority: "Those interested in applying can do so via the Ultium Cells LLC website. The new Ultium Cells production facility is currently under construction on a 158-acre plot of land. When completed, the facility will encompass some 3 million square feet. General Motors says the facility will have an annual capacity of more than 30 gigawatt hours, with room for expansion.General Motors has moved forward in its push to an all-electric future with a variety of announcements and debuts this year, including the unveiling of the Cadillac Lyriq luxury crossover show car in August, and the debut of the all-new GMC Hummer EV pickup truck last month. Both the Lyriq and the Hummer EV will be powered by Ultium Cell battery technology."   https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/11/general-motors-now-hiring-for-ultium-cells-battery-plant-in-ohio/     You can listen to all 924 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 15th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.     POLESTAR 2 ELECTRIC WILL DEBUT AT GENEVA TO TAKE ON TESLA MODEL 3 On yesterday’s show I was reviewing my day at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, where not only did the Polestar 1 make it's world debut on track, but also the time I spent with the production car on their stand. Clearly it lacks some green credentials because it's got a 2 litre petrol engine tied to those electric motors, albeit a very respectable 70 miles pure EV power. "The Polestar 2 will debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show as Volvo’s now standalone brand delivers an electric saloon car aimed at the Tesla Model 3." says Cars UK.net: "the Polestar 1 is only Polestar’s opening salvo, and every future Polestar will be a pure EV, starting with the Polestar 2 which, according to Evo, will debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Polestar say they want to pitch their offerings somewhere between Tesla and Porsche, but the Polestar 2 looks to be an electric saloon car built on Volvo’s CMA platform (the one underpinning the XC40 et al) and have a price range of £35-50k. Which seems like it’s aimed straight at the Model 3." Evo reports: "Polestar will certainly pursue its focus on driving dynamics with the Polestar 2, the company intent on positioning itself as an EV performance car brand that can deliver to customers who aren’t excited by the current crop of stylish and safe Volvos. Speaking to evo at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Polestar’s chief operating officer Jonathan Goodman revealed his intention that Polestar cars will always be ‘great looking cars that add a dimension, as far as Volvo is concerned, because they’ll be designed as driver’s cars"   http://www.carsuk.net/polestar-2-electric-saloon-will-debut-at-geneva-to-take-on-tesla-model-3/   ELON MUSK’S TALKS TO BLOOMBERG ABOUT LEARNING FROM MODEL 3 PRODUCTION Simon at Teslarati has picked out some key quotes from the Elon Musk interview with Bloomberg: "It’s been super-hard. Like there is for sure some permanent mental scar tissue here. But I do feel good about the months to come. I think the results will speak for themselves. To the best of my judgment, I do not think we have any future bet-the-company situations. We will still need to work hard and be vigilant and not be complacent because it is very difficult just to survive as a car company. But it will not be the same level of strain as getting to volume production of Model 3”. com were also picking one their highlights: ""We were huge idiots and didn't know what we were doing," Musk said in a recent interview with Bloomberg, referring to the massive production delays resulting from an over-reliance on robots on Tesla's assembly line. Musk and his team made a big bet that automation would help Telsa make more cars in a single month than it ever had before, only to have robots repeatedly fail, forcing the company to halt the entire production process to fix the problem. It's like you just took all the highways away from L.A. or something. Part of the problem is that the designing heads were naive about manufacturing," Musk said in the interview. "Just because we have something that works great in a simulation does not mean that it works great in reality."   NEXT-GENERATION RENAULT ZOE EXPECTED IN 2019 – UNVEILING THIS FALL? "There is a fair chance that this fall we will see the second-generation Renault ZOE (maybe at the Paris Motor Show in October)" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "According to French sources, Renault will be retooling the Clio and ZOE factory in August to double the production output of ZOE to 440 copies a day from September on. First, Renault intends to introduce the next-generation Clio and it’s expected that in 2019 the all-new ZOE will hit the market. The Renault-flagship BEV potentially will be longer and bigger, but the battery pack (41 kWh) and electric motor (R110) are expected to remain the same at initial launch at least. The new feature will be DC fast charging using CCS Combo."   https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-2-expected-2019-unveiling-paris/amp/   LEXUS BOSS WARNS EV PUSH COULD BE TOO SOON "Fully electric car technology is not ready for mass adoption, and nor is the environmental impact fully understood, Lexus president Yoshihiro Sawa believes." that's according to Jim Holder who's found this story for AutoCar: "Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which he is visiting for the first time, Sawa confirmed that the firm - in conjunction with parent company Toyota - is working on all types of powertrain, including full EV and hydrogen, but said that it would not leap into the market until the customer and environmental benefits were clear." He said: "“Pure EVs currently require a long charging time and batteries that have an environmental impact at manufacture and which degrade as they get older. And then, when cells need replacing, we have to consider plans for future use and recycling. It is a complex issue - much more complex than the current rhetoric perhaps suggests. I prefer to approach the future in a more honest way. If we are looking for the best solution it is my opinion that the best solution is not only EV; we must consider petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell.
