In this episode of the Conflict Skills Podcast, host Simon Goode discusses five online debate tactics that are ineffective when used with friends and family, and offers alternatives for better communication. He emphasises the importance of avoiding aggressive behaviors like interrupting, applying pressure, and using sarcasm, suggesting instead to listen respectfully, reduce pressure, and acknowledge differing viewpoints. The episode aims to help listeners improve their conflict resolution skills in personal relationships by reflecting on Simon's own past mistakes and learning from them.--------------------Online Debate Tactics That Don't Work (With Friends & Family)Interrupting and Controlling the ConversationHow it manifests in conversations (e.g., talking over, steering the conversation)Results and outcomes of using this tacticPersonal anecdote about Simon's usage of this tacticApplying PressureDifferent ways pressure is applied (e.g., fixed choice questions, not letting thoughts form)Outcomes and the other person's typical reactionsExamples that illustrate pressure applicationSimon's discussion on workplace application vs. personal contextsHumor and RidiculeUse of sarcasm and humor in debatesExamples of sarcastic ridiculePsychological impact on social survival and tribe dynamicsRisks associated with this tactic in emotionally charged conversationsStraw ManningDefinition and explanation of the straw man argumentExamples of straw manningHow it causes disengagementSimon's personal history with this tacticWalking AwaySituations where walking away might be seen as losing or ending the debateImpact of unfinished business with friendsImportance of long-term relationship dynamicsEffective Strategies for Managing Debates and DisagreementsAllowing Space and Letting Them SpeakApologizing for interruptionsFocusing on active listeningMethods to signal attention and readiness to listenReducing PressureGiving control over the timing and location of the conversationAllowing autonomy and choiceExamples of reducing perceived pressureRespect and DeferenceBeing overly deferential and respectful in both language and behaviorTreating the other person's perspective with seriousness and importanceSituational examples of applying respect and deferenceSteel ManningDefinition of steel manningTechniques to present the other person's argument in the best possible lightBenefits of acknowledging the internal logic of others' perspectivesLeaving Room for Continued DialogueConfirming the opportunity for future discussionsSuggestions for ending conversations on good termsValidating different views without pressure to resolve immediatelyClick here to send me a quick message via FanMailwebsite: simongoode.com email: podcast@simongoode.com
Today, we're talking about the California "wildfires" (possible arson) and the leadership failures fueling the crisis. Governor Gavin Newsom has slashed $100+ million from the wildfire and forest resilience fund, which left communities vulnerable to devastation while he shifts blame to "climate change."We're uncovering the facts, examining the consequences of these budget cuts, and discussing what real leadership should look like during such a critical time.--https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=police+coffee&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8--John Dennis Interview Pt. 1: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/uncommon-sense-with-ginny-robinson/id1589697894?i=1000647727948John Dennis Interview Pt. 2: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/uncommon-sense-with-ginny-robinson/id1589697894?i=1000649134025--Order Culture: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/SLYWFXAB6479S

Hey Smarties! We’re taping today’s episode of Make Me Smart live from Seattle. We’ll have the show in your feeds soon. But for now, enjoy a rerun of one of our favorite episodes of the year so far. With all the rage tweets about gas stoves, it may be hard to believe, but climate change wasn't always so polarizing. Studies show that public opinion on the topic started to splinter in the 1990s, when governments and corporations had to reckon with the threat of a warming planet. “Prior to 1997, it was a conversation among a bunch of scientists, but once the Kyoto treaty came, it became an issue that affected powerful political and economic interests,” said Andrew Hoffman, professor of sustainable enterprise at the University of Michigan and author of “How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate.” On the show today: Hoffman explains how climate change became a partisan issue, the financial and economic interests that got us to where we are today, and what might get us back to some common ground. In the News Fix, guest host Amy Scott tells us about an ad campaign bringing attention to gender bias in internet search results. Plus, we'll explain why classified documents in surprising places is more common than you might expect. And stick around for the TL;DR on Elon Musk's trial over what he said about Tesla on Twitter (the social media platform he now owns). Later, we'll hear from a listener who did the math on the cost-effectiveness of fueling up with diesel vs. gas, and a loyal listener makes us smarter about our own theme music! Here's everything we talked about today: “Climate Science as Culture War” from the Stanford Social Innovation Review A widening gap: Republican and Democratic views on climate change from Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development “For Earth Day, key facts about Americans' views of climate change and renewable energy” from Pew Research Center “Politics & Global Warming, March 2018” from Yale Program on Climate Communication “How the humble gas stove became the latest flash point in the culture wars” from The Washington Post “Wyoming lawmaker behind electric-vehicle ban says he didn't mean it” from The Washington Post “The business opportunity that is climate change” from Marketplace “Correct The Internet & DDB NZ on a mission to highlight bias against women's sport” from The Drum “Global ‘Correct the Internet' campaign launches to make sportswomen more visible via DDB NZ” from Campaign Brief “Classified Documents Found at Mike Pence's Home” from The Wall Street Journal “Elon Musk Securities-Fraud Trial” from Bloomberg It's a new year, and we're looking for new answers to the Make Me Smart question. Leave us a voice message at 508-U-B-SMART and your submission may be featured in a future episode.

Love it or loathe it, climate change appears to be here to stay following the release of guidance from The Law Society on the role of legal services in providing consumers with information. And it is the subject of this latest Today's Conveyancer podcast as host David Opie is joined by Groundsure CEO Dan Montagnani, Bold Legal Group CEO Rob Hailstone, and Head of Property at Dutton Gregory Paul Sams. Through the course of the discussion each of the contributors shares their thoughts on what the climate change guidance means for conveyancers in the absence of sector specific guidance which we await, and/or a practice note.Alongside the discussion, Today's Conveyancer ran a survey to find out what the sentiment is amongst conveyancers around the guidance and their role in supporting home movers better understand the longer term risks brought about by climate change. There were over 100 responses to the question "what will be your approach as a firm or practitioner with regard to how you engage your clients?" revealing;35% of respondents will proactively report on any climate risks identified in search reports and use tools including standard clauses to help explain the risk to clients9% will report to clients on climate risk only when a risk is identified by a search report18% will let the client decide on whether this is a material risk to the property transaction and evidence this to reduce risk to the practice25% do not intend to report on climate change issues to clientsThe issue seems to hinge on the qualification of lawyers to provide such advice to clients and both Paul and Rob acknowledge there is yet another element of scope or mission creep with the issue as responsibility for reporting on it, which should be in everyone's interests and remit, falls squarely on the conveyancer's shoulders. In an entertaining discussion the three discuss whether climate change is something that the conveyancing community should be pushing back on, or whether it's part of the new breed of conveyancer whose role it is to be a conduit for this sort of information and hand hold home movers much more. The Today's Conveyancer podcast can be found on your preferred podcast provider and also at www.todaysconveyancer.co.uk. Subscribe and listen in for all the latest conveyancing industry news and views.
If carbon dioxide is the chief climate change concern, then why are environmentalists talking about wind, solar, and electric vehicles and not carbon capture technology? Charles McConnell, the Asst. Secretary of Energy during the Obama Administration, explains that carbon capture technology is already being deployed throughout the U.S. and will bring within reach the ability to actually dial up or dial down the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, solving climate challenges that excess CO2 could create. Jacki adds that best of all, this is the path that does not destabilize the electric grid nor require rare earth minerals that have a supply chain reliant on child labor and foreign adversaries.

Nate Harmon is CEO and cofounder of OceanBit; Steve Barbour is CEO and founder of Upstream Data; both are Bitcoiners. In this interview, we debate climate change: the reliability of climate models, climate change mitigation, adaptation and the forecast inequality of climate change impacts. - - - - What Bitcoin Did has discussed both sides of the climate change debate with a number of esteemed guests. The reasoning is two-fold: firstly, one of Bitcoin's major attack vectors is energy use and associated climate change impacts; secondly, it is one of the major issues of our time, arguably the most pressing issue. These shows have either expressed one side or another, until now. Bitcoiners are a broad church. That is an inherent strength. But is also brings its own internal pressures. Whilst there is broad consensus on Bitcoin's mission, there are divergent opinions on a host of other issues that this new form of money affects. None more so than climate change. Many believe in the need for fossil fuels to enable humans to continue to flourish; others argue that we need to rapidly pivot from fossil fuel reliance if we're to avoid an existential crisis. However, the debate is not open-ended. There is a strong argument that the framing of the current discussion falls within agreed boundaries. It doesn't feel contentious to state both sides of the debate within the Bitcoin community agree that abundant energy is needed and that the climate is warming. The disagreement is focused on the rate of climate change and the approach to mitigation. Obviously, whilst there is agreement that narrows the parameters of any debate, the outstanding issues are complex, contentious and critical. The stakes on both sides are high; discussion and compromise are vital. Can we within the community find common ground? Is it possible to attenuate the growing animosity around this subject? Can Bitcoiners lead the way in being open-minded, receptive and malleable to different ideas? Let's start engaging and find out.

Classmate Tom McNulty had a winding path to the energy business, but has spent most of his life thinking about our nation's energy supply -- how it is used, where it comes from and what the future holds. During the conversation, Tom kept talking about the climate change "debate," so I asked him what he meant by that. I was surprised by his answer. It was thought provoking and important. Take a listen. Bring an open mind. And, think about how Tom's perspectives might inform our the class discussion about climate change and solutions to it.

Brave New Women hosted Camilla BorrevikCamilla Borrevik, a Norwegian anthropologist working with the small Pacific Island states on climate change, talks about different styles of communication in climate change negotiations. She discusses the Pacific Island style of communication and ways of sharing knowledge, which involves respect, sharing and stories, and how the Fijian presidency of COP 23 allowed people to connect on a completely different level. As one journalist put it: "Finally, negotiators are talking like people".She compares this to the typical, bureaucratic style of communication and interaction that is usually found in climate change conferences, to the difficulties she has had as a young woman in expressing herself at international events and also to her experience of academia, where criticism and questioning of research can bring people down rather than building them up. If you would like to know more, Camilla's PhD has been published under the title: " 'We started climate change': A Multi-level ethnography of Pacific Climate Leadership". The Great Reset is upon us, suited in the full armor of mainstream climate change theory. The importance of our understanding of climate change cannot be understated. It is a primary influence on the direction of humanity, and perhaps could lead to the end of humanity. Today we debate mainstream climate change theory. Are Klaus Schwaub, Justin Trudeau, and Joe Biden right? Do human's have a substantive impact? Or, perhaps more concerning, is this all a big farce? co-host Mike is blazing enormous 'climate consensus' weaponry alongside names such as Wallace S. Broecker, James E. Hansen, and Phil D. Jones. DG is attempting to usurp Mike's culturally-dominant position with the rebelliousness of skeptics such as Lennart O. Bengtsson, John R. Christy, and Judith A. Curry. Relationships are the focus of this week's All Out Politics podcast. The UK's future relationship with the European Union. Will it be 'Canada' or 'Australia' or another arrangement? The mainstream media's relationship with 10 Downing Street following this week's confusion over which journalists were allowed access to an official government briefing. And the political relationship with the issue of climate change as the Prime Minister sacks a former minister who was due to chair a UN climate conference in Glasgow later this year. This as it's announced that the sale of all petrol and diesel cars will be banned by 2035.Joining Adam Boulton this week are Director of the British Foreign Policy Group Sophia Gaston, visiting professor at London South Bank University James Woudhysen and Sky's political correspondent Joe Pike.
Are we doomed by a coming climate change apocalypse? Patrick Farnsworth of the Last Born in the Wilderness podcast and Alexander Miller, who recently appeared on the You Can't Win podcast to challenge climate doomerism, join us for a debate and discussion based around that very question. Alex requested to have a debate on this matter after hearing a previous conversation between Patrick and I. Alex argues that Patrick views represent what's been called "Doomerism" about climate change and wanted to debate him what climate change and climate catastrophe will entail. Alex does not argue that climate change isn't a major issue, but rather takes the view that it will not be an extinction level event. Patrick takes more or less a bleaker view on what climate change entails. In this conversation they debate the merits of their viewpoints and let the listeners decide. Join our November 2019 speaker, Dr. Andy Hoffman, University of Michigan, for an extended Q&A featuring CCL volunteer questions that we didn't have time for during our monthly call. Solving climate change — and saving civilization as we know it — will require a major systemic shift in our culture. Dr. Hoffman maintains that we are in a societal moment akin to a new era of enlightenment and joins us to talk about the system-level changes to our thinking needed in the anthropocene and the role of business in the great rethinking of our economy. Dr. Hoffman is the Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan. He has published 16 books, including How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate and Re-engaging with Sustainability in the Anthropocene Era: An Institutional Approach. This episode focuses on work and play. Angie points out how work and play are connected and form the foundation of our lives. She further suggests that maintaining a good balance between work and play will improve your overall wellness. With regard to the environment, she discusses the New York Times opinion piece from October that stated that climate change will cost us even more than we think and draws attention to the December 6th (2019) US nationwide climate strike. Several personal actions are suggested, such as buying holiday gifts with the planet in mind e.g. donating to organizations that are helping the planet in someone’s name, so that everyone can be part of the solution. Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg completed her 15-day voyage on an emission-free sailboat to attend a climate summit at the United Nations earlier this week. The 16-year-old delivered an impassioned speech that made international headlines. And on Friday, she’s scheduled to attend the Montreal climate change march, which Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May are also expected to attend. Thunberg has inspired a ton of think pieces, been all over the media, and just yesterday won what’s known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize.” But not all the attention has been good . . . and a lot of the criticism she’s faced have been personal attacks. Host Tamara Khandaker talks to Amanda Marcotte, a senior politics writer for Salon. They discuss why Thunberg isn’t the only women in the fight against climate change who deals with this kind of criticism, and what is it about her and others like her that inspire such visceral reactions.

Jay Inslee says what is impractical is planting crops in 8 feet of water, ostensibly blaming recent Midwest floods on climate change. Joe Biden pledges to cure cancer if elected. It is incredibly sad that Joe Biden lost his son, Beau, to brain cancer. I cannot imagine how terrible that must be. I don't have a problem with him promising to devote all available resources to cancer research - or even being hopeful that we can find a cure. But to promise it is something altogether different that plays to the hopes of Americans. Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop sued (again) - this time by Autumn Scardina, a transgender woman. Scardina is suing because Phillips refused to bake a gender transition cake for her because it violates his Christian faith. Is there only one bakery in Lakewood, Colorado?

We talk about the relatively simple problem of global climate change with Brigham Daniels. Starting with EPA’s just-proposed regulations, we discuss the very odd way that U.S. law has confronted the problem. Why has it become a partisan issue and how do we overcome that? Greg Craven is a high school science teacher and climate change activist from Oregon. His new book is What's the Worst That Could Happen? A Rational Response to the Climate Change Debate. In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Greg Craven discusses the youtube video on global warming he created that now has nearly 8 million views. He talks about applying game theory to the "decision paralysis" people have surrounding the global warming debate, using a "decision grid." He explores misunderstandings most people have about the nature of science, and whether or not science can provide certainty about important questions facing society. He emphasizes as a starting point the acknowledgement, whether one is a skeptic of global warming or a "panicked activist," that one could be wrong about global warming. He argues that the evidence is not what is most important in the climate change debate, because each side has "evidence" to support its conclusions. He talks about "confirmation bias," and how it makes it difficult to find out the truth about global warming. He explains why it is less important to personally live "green," and why others kinds of social environmentalist activism is more important.
