We engage the matrix drive and set course for the Discworld that might have been, as EJ Mann joins us to discuss Terry Pratchett's first attempt at writing a flat Earth, 1981's Strata. 200-year-old human Kin Arad works for the Company building planets - the traditional, oblate spheroid kind. So when deep space pioneer Jago Jalo shows up wearing an invisibility cloak, and says he's discovered a flat Earth full of advanced technology, she can't resist. She's joined by Marco, a four-armed paranoid Kung pilot who thinks he's human; and Silver, a huge, gentle, bear-like and potentially ravenous Shand linguist. But the expedition soon goes wrong: betrayed by Jalo, their ship destroyed, the trio are stranded on a bizarre Disc-world full of dragons, demons and humans with strange beliefs. It's also a duplicate of medieval Europe - but the world is breaking down. It's a race against time as they journey to the centre of the Disc looking for a means of escape - and something is watching them all the way... Pratchett's third novel, the last before The Colour of Magic changed his life forever, Strata is a direct parody of Larry Niven's 1970 sci-fi classic Ringworld. Many of Pratchett's favourite ideas, jokes and themes appear here for the first time. You'll find talking ravens, magic mixed with technology, characters who TALK LIKE THIS and an author taking the fantastic seriously to the point of absurdity. There are even a few bright young things who'll later make it big on the Discworld, like the Broken Drum and Mrs Widgery's Lodger. Did you know this was a parody of Ringworld? On October 27, 2007, 38-year-old Joel Lovelien and his fiance Heather donned costumes to attend a Halloween party at the Broken Drum lounge in North Dakota. At 11:30 PM, Joel went outside to answer a call on his phone, after returning to Heather to tell her he needed to help someone outside, he left the bar. Shortly afterward, he was found in the parking lot severely beaten and choked to death on his own blood.With a list of witnesses and suspects at the bar that night, we discuss what could have happened to Joel and how an evening that should have been a celebration ended so tragically.

On October 27, 2007, Joel Lovelion was dressed as a fan of his favorite hockey team for a Halloween party hosted at the Broken Drum bar in Grand Forks, ND. Before the night was over, Joel would be dead, beaten to death by another partygoer. The only physical evidence found was something yellow from part of a costume. The suspects include a penguin, a clown, a gangster, and a construction worker. Will the murderer be unmasked or will Joel's killer remain disguised?

Joel Lovelien took his fiancee to a Halloween party at the Broken Drum bar and grill in Grand Forks, North Dakota on Saturday, October 27th, 2007. The party was big, and a bus pulled up pouring out 40 to 50 twenty-somethings making it even busier. Joel took a call outside, and when he returned, explained to his fiancee that he was going to check on someone he saw outside who may have been left behind. Moments later, a woman came in screaming to call 911 and Joel's fiancee made the grisly discovery of Joel's beaten body. He was rushed to the hospital, but died as a result of his wounds. The investigation began, but it contained a sordid cast of characters like you'd find in a bad comic book. Identities were unknown, but Police were looking for men dressed as a cowboy, hunter, lion, construction worker, gangsta rapper and a clown. When all was said and done, the Lion - a man named Travis Stay was arrested and tried for the murder, but ultimately, was found not guilty. While many believe Stay was the perpetrator, others feel that some of the other men from the party bus may have actually committed the crime in a drunken rage.
