Get ready for the most unintentionally sexist O3L yet! We tried very hard to steer away from the phrase "one man band" during this episode...only to pick albums almost exclusively by one man bands (except for a bonus nod to Enya). We tried. Dang you, unintentional sexism!! Anyway, the focus this week is albums where one man...er, human...mostly did it all. All the vocals. All the instruments. In many cases, all of the writing and production. The albums recorded in this fashion during the O3L era have been wildly influential for DIY musicians today, including today'sThird Lad, Minorcan's Ryan Anderson. With a career stretching back over 20 years, including three full-band records, Ryan Anderson's latest self-released Minorcan album, the appropriately titled Rock Alone, is a basement arena rock tour-de-force. Featuring eight musically rich and lyrically insightful songs from the pen of the Asheville, NC-based artist, Rock Alone will appeal to fans of roots rock, punk, and classic singer-songwriters alike. Rock Alone is now available on vinyl, CD, and digital: https://minorcan.bandcamp.com Thanks to Mike Turner from Crashing Through Publicity for the connection! Learn more about your ad choices.

Time to revisit the discography of the mighty Status Quo. We've previously visited the 70s and 80s, so it's logical (and sequential!) that we now proceed to the 90s, an era that many fans of the rock'n'roll kings ignore. At their own peril as you'll soon hear. Three albums were produced that decade, two of which are very good while the third has its peaks (and valleys unfortunately). Time to boogie like a zombie!!! Side One Rock 'Til You Drop (1991) (0:00) Like a Zombie (4:59) One Man Band (9:25) Can't Give You More (13:48) No Problems Thirsty Work (1994) (18:32) I Didn't Mean It Side 2 (21:53) Queenie Under the Influence (1999) (25:21) Under the Influence (29:21) Shine On (34:03) Blessed Are the Meek (38:20) The Way It Goes

We continue our 'The Year In Metal" series moving into the 90s ... not a great decade for the fortunes of heavy metal. This 1991 episode shows that no specific heavy sub-genre was leading the pack, instead we have as diverse a grouping as you'll ever find in our ever growing series. From extreme metal to folk metal, from punk to hard rock, from boogie rock to grindcore ... it's all represented in this ode to 1991. Don't worry though, metal will arise after the 90s!!! The few essential tools he could bring in his kit were only as useful as the street smarts he had to pick up when traveling through places like South Africa, India, and Peru. Triple treat for the ages. It was Maximum Verstappen at Qatar, with a third crown. The sky is the limit for Max, how many title will his career end in? That Aussie boy has speed. Piastri takes a maiden F1 win, with a sprint pole and victory, but you have to feel for Lando watching both Australians take a win. When will it be Landos turn? Stroll threw the toys out of the cot and serious questions have to be asked. The FIA are investigating his incidents. Is that the straw that broke the camels back? And Andretti are set to arrive. The green light has all but been given to join the grid as we expand the field, just don't mention it to James Vowes.

Steve Solkela is a master multitasker. He started playing accordion in high school and then kept adding instruments to his repertoire, including a bass drum and a trumpet. He's now touring nationally and sometimes internationally as Steve's Overpopulated One Man Band. He plays covers and writes original music with a sense of humor. Steve was born on the Iron Range in Palo and is now based in Virginia, Minnesota. He joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about his life and music.
