I'm Cap Blackard, show runner for The Call of Cthulhu Mystery Program. Our series is an occult radio play of unknowable horror and black comedy. It's also an unholy marriage of improvised actual play and scripted audio drama. These live performances channel the visceral panic and humor of actually living through sanity-shredding nightmares. Then my team and I go back in, script new elements, bring in an expanded voice cast, create original score, and add cinematic sound design to summon this podcast to life. What's more, our series has a focus on elevating Lovecraftian horror beyond the authors' myopic view of the world. It's a historical drama that features prominent women, people of color, queer representation, and explores the unknowable in ways that Lovecraft's fears, prejudices, and small-mindedness couldn't fathom. This is episode 5 of our second series: "The Terrible Secret of Lot X". In it, you'll meet wealthy occultist, Estelle Thorpe. Her latest auction win has proven to be a Pandora's Box of horror. She and her partner in the unseen arts, Anjana, have assembled an unlikely crew of curiosity-seekers to solve the paranormal mysteries she's uncovered. There's Moses; mountain man turned renowned novelist, Cherry; a floozie who's more than she seems, Oswald; a hobo king, and Kenneth; a notorious gambler... You can find the entire series on your favorite podcast player and at https://cthulhumystery.com Thanks for listening. https://cthulhumystery.com

The 90s were a strange and unpredictable time for The Who. The band was back as a touring act but little else, meanwhile the individual members pressed on into their solo careers. Townshend's passion projects paved the way for eventual Who material, Daltry soldiered on to find a way forward musically, and Entwistle threw caution to the wind to start his own group with friends Steve Luongo and Godfrey Townsend (no relation). These twelve-odd years are the building blocks of how The Who put themselves back together - recreating the sounds of their records onstage for the first time - instead of the other way around. Plus... there's some very deep wells of little-known, but vital material to explore. Prepare for Maximum Discography!Join host Marc for a fan's-eye-view into the controversial 1989 reunion tour and a deep dive with Cap Blackard into the pros and cons of the two different versions of Townshend's concept album, Psychoderelict. Eventually the band returned to loudest, classic-style performances for the most surprising reason of all: Townshend getting as close to finishing Lifehouse as possible. Those stripped down gigs from 1999-2001 were well received. In fact - some believe The Who's appearance at the Concert For New York can hang with the leagues of Queen at Live Aid! But the new highs weren't to last, this episode goes up to the very last notes John Entwistle would ever play onstage with his childhood friends before his untimely passing in 2002.Albums covered in this episode include Join Together, Rocks In The Head, Psychoderelict (both the dialogue and music-only versions), Thirty Years of Maximum R&B, Live At Isle Of Wight 1970, Left For Live, A Benefit For Maryville Academy, BBC Sessions, The Blues To The Bush, Lifehouse Chronicles, Music From Van-Pires, Scoop 3, and more from this era! We speak with Talking Heads' David Byrne about the Criterion Collection re-release of his 1986 film, True Stories and the first ever edition of that film's complete soundtrack. The film was Byrne's directorial debut and as it plaily puts it right at the start is "about a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas." It's part zany, slice of life comedy, part anthropological study - processed through the music of Talking Heads and projected through a loving, art house lens. Jon CoS' Cap Blackard as they speak with Byrne about how this remarkable portrait of 80s America came together. Teyana Taylor has been a lioness all along, but her next step is to become the queen of the jungle on her own terms. As Kanye West and the rest of his G.O.O.D. crew’s social media antics consumed more time than they potentially spent to produce Taylor’s entire album, the singer makes a quiet assertion that from now on, her success is in her hands on “Never Would Have Made It”: “Made a lot of decisions based on everyone but me/ But now, I'm strong enough to let it go/ I'm wise enough to take control.”An album review by Natalia Barr, read by Cap Blackard.Learn more about your ad choices. Opting to drop the baton instead of dropping the mic, Nas’ delivery mirrors the lackluster stage presence that has historically plagued his live shows. It’s not perfect, but Invasion of Privacy is remarkably cohesive, the right length, and filled to the brim with songs that already feel like inevitable summer smashes. After making history, Cardi B faced seemingly insurmountable hype and expectations for this album, and she brushed them off like they were nothing. She’s still finding her way, but in a way that maybe a handful of artists have accomplished this decade. It feels like she could do anything. An album review by David Sackllah, read by Cap Blackard.Learn more about your ad choices. If the EP was meant to be a way to revisit “mixtape Abel”, it feels thin, lacking the slippery tension that made those tapes so drawing in the first place. My Dear Melancholy, has cohesion, but it’s a listless, murky sound that never unhinges the way you want it to. Had The Weeknd pushed a little further, it could have made for something more substantial, rather than walking up to the cusp and then backing down.An album review by David Sackllah, read by Cap Blackard.Learn more about your ad choices. TP welcomes two very special guest from the Consequence of Sound website. Cap Blackard and Michael Roffman. On the heels of the NBC announcement of a proposed Miami Vice reboot they discuss their article that piches an idea for making the Vin Diesel helmed series a sequel series taking place in the original vice canon.
A handful of personalities behind The Nerdy Show and the creative team of the maybe soon-to-be animated series Lightning Dogs join us this week! We talk to Cap, Doug and Tony about stumbling into the idea for the show, why animation is preferable in this case to comics, documenting the entire creative process, cartoon series from the '90s, David Bowie, animation distribution and so much more! Plus, we add a few new characters to the Panel President list!
It’s EPIC PIEcast! Party with Nelson Lugo and Schaffer the Darklord as they dust off every corner of pop culture for discussion, debate, and deconstruction with all the snark and witty banter that they can muster. In this month's episode of this non-epic podcast that has nothing to do with pie, the boys pack their bags and jet away to lizard-kissed Orlando, Florida to record their oft contentious chit chat before a live studio audience at The Geek Easy in A Comic Shop. Morphine-addled Lugo and quizmaster Schaffer hit a horrifying jackpot when an audience volunteer dishes on her profession. Then they welcome their boss, Nerdy Show Network's executive producer and co-founder Cap Blackard, to the program for an interview and employee evaluation. Can Schaffer keep smiling? Can Lugo keep out of the ER? Seriously...PUDDLES? Ask yourself these questions out loud, or don't as you listen to this month's episode!
