Rostam, Santigold, Dijon and Samantha Urbani discuss whether melody or lyrics come first, how to avoid the temptation to go back to tracks to make alterations, and how naming an album is the last bit of personality you can sprinkle on a project. Rostam is a Grammy-winning producer, composer, musician, and founding member of the band Vampire Weekend, producing their first three albums. Now a solo artist, he released his debut album Half-Light in 2017, and went on to produce Haim’s Women in Music Pt. She’s released three albums to date, and draws influences ranging from 1980s pop and rock to new age hip-hop. Dijon is an artist whose reflective, folk-inspired R&B has drawn comparisons to Frank Ocean and Nick Hakim. He began producing music as part of the duo Abhi//Dijon whilst in college before establishing himself as a solo artist. And finally, Samantha Urbani is an artist, filmmaker, and songwriter who formed the influential DIY indie band Friends. She then moved to LA, where she lent her skills to collaborators including Dev Hynes, Nite Jewel and Zoe Kravitz.

Born in Michigan, but raised on the east coast until his mother moved the family to the west coast, Derrick Smith found himself jammed in the middle of the late 90's during the east vs. west beef. Because of his sister, he started playing guitar while recovering from a jaw injury. “She had been gifted one and I thought it looked cool so I asked her if I could play the Am chord and fell in love. "I write most of my songs in G major key which naturally has an Am conveniently one whole step away.” Derrick started to listen to bands for the first time once he became a guitarist in training which opened up a whole new world for him since he listened to only hip hop and R&B throughout high school and college. Deep down, though, he wanted to learn how popular guitar players play the instrument. He soon fell in love with the music of Dev Hynes, especially his live recorded performances, and decided soon after that he wanted to be a musician and started gigging out in his early-mid 20's. Inspired by his love of music, LOVE, the creator GOD and nature, Derrick Smith aka Studded Leather, an artist name he branded himself with, is still on the path of writing his life out in musical stories that show all the sides of his life experience so keep your eyes and ears open for his songs and music that will paint your life with goodness. soundcloud.com/damn-de IG @studdedleathermusic

Devonté Hynes, aka Blood Orange, had an incredible 2019. He dropped the mixtape Angel's Pulse; scored the critically acclaimed film Queen and Slim; released a classical album with Third Coast Percussion; directed a music video for Beck; and, as a fan, finally saw the brilliant composer/vocalist Beverly Glenn-Copeland live. Glenn-Copeland (as he prefers to go by in his day-to-day life) had his own amazing year: At the age of 74, he had his first international tour, released the new LP Primal Prayer, and saw his previously obscure, decade-spanning seven album catalog finally embraced in music communities around the world. And he met Dev, whose music he adores. We introduced Dev and Glenn right here on the Talkhouse Podcast, and the ensuing convo was warm, vulnerable, funny, and potent. The two sat on a sofa at Hook and Fade Studio in Brooklyn, and instantly formed a world all their own; they stared into each other's eyes, and spoke so softly that it was difficult to hear them from even a few feet away. In their wide-ranging conversation, Glenn and Dev discuss discovering parts of themselves by traveling out of their home countries; the way they each approach their songwriting; and the story behind Glenn’s seminal 1986 album Keyboard Fantasies. We also learn the importance of nature and its role in their music; how recently Dev began to honor music as the foundation of all his creativity; and the trick Glenn’s mother used to make him a musician while still in utero. Being born in a place called Essex, approximately 30 miles outside London, was kind of the ideal place for a future critically acclaimed songwriter. Close enough to the big city to make it out to the cool shows and record stores. Far enough away that you can have like... a band. Hynes talks to us about his early love of soccer, how his creative process differs when collaborating with other artists and creating his own work and why he sees the similarities between his hometown and a certain Jersey Shore cast. Plus, he'll tell us what it's like to wake up to 4 missed calls from Diddy!

"Do you see my skin through the flames".

This is Part 2, but not the finale, of a music-talk feature about the ongoing celebration and an address to current social issues of the LGBTQIA community. The mix consists of phenomenal new (and newish) artists as well as seminal figures, including Lou Reed, Le Tigre, Ezra Furman, Blood Orange, Girlpool feat Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Dizzy Fae, Courtney Barnett, Ssion, Troye Sivan, RuPaul feat. Kummerspeck, Janelle Monáe, Planningtorock and KUSF currents: Lucille Furs, Amyl + the Sniffers, Soak, and Razteria. Between Pride Parts 1 and 2, I do a scattering of commentary on music from decades starting from the 1920s to current, as well as historical/cultural landmarks, including the “Lavender Scare,” and personal ponderings about the other “Q.” Both episodes come back to engaging with an ongoing question about gender-sexuality exploration while respecting boundaries that refrain from Queer appropriation. Also, as chatted about, but not deeply dove into, I referenced some enlightening sources on Queer culture and how the history of LGBTQIA came into the movement as we understand it today. Those references and others are... The podcast, Making Gay History Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness's episode "What's Your Experience with the Binary?" featuring Alok Vaid-Menon NPR podcast, Throughline's episode "Before Stonewall" Ellen Page and Ian Daniel's docu-series Gaycation And, because there was either not enough time on my show or because of certain USF boundaries with language discretion, I wasn't able to share some artists' songs on my mix over the live airwaves. But, in case you missed the entire show or just the songs I didn't include, please do check out their music on my Spotify playlist (*not-aired starts at "Touch" by Shura)... Van Hunt, the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer has announced his fifth studio album The Fun Rises, TheFun Sets to be released May 5th via Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt's own label godless-hotspot. Like its predecessor - 2011's What Were You Hoping For?, which The New York Times hailed as "ambitious and exciting" - The Fun Rises, The FunSets is enticingly adventurous. Of the album Van Hunt states: ""The drive to create something new and different is what keeps me excited and engaged as an artist. It's the thrill of appearing with The Afghan Whigs at Coachella and then performing at a gospel quartet music special all in the same week. The excitement is in constantly evolving as an artist. It's how I got from my first album,Van Hunt (alternative soul, electro-funk music influenced by Prince and The Ohio Players), to my last album What Were You Hoping For?, which was Bowie-influenced, progressive rock and soul." Full of African rhythms, blues and funk, the new album is full of contemporary components often found in the music of St. Vincent, James Blake, Dev Hynes and FKA Twigs. "It is the history of Black- American music filtered through modern technology," explains Hunt.    Today you can hear the first single off the album "Vega (stripes on)," a percolating, lusty track that simmers with jangly Howlin' Wolf-style guitars closed with a short rhyme reminiscent of early Raekwon. Pre-order the album now and check out the track above.

Kindnesspecialen börjar 33 minuter in i avsnittet.
