Today, Emily Kircher-Morris talks with Dr. Ross Greene, author of The Explosive Child and the upcoming book The Kids Who Aren't Okay, and the originator of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, about the critical difference between modifying behavior and solving the problems that cause it. Dr. Ross W. Greene is a clinical psychologist and the originator of Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS), an innovative, evidence-based approach for supporting kids with concerning behaviors. He is the author of several influential books, including The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, Raising Human Beings, and his forthcoming title, The Kids Who Aren't Okay: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Support, Belonging, and Hope in Schools. He also developed and executive produced the award-winning 2018 documentary The Kids We Lose. Dr. Greene is the founding director of the nonprofit Lives in the Balance and previously served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years. He is currently an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech and the University of Technology Sydney. His CPS model has been implemented in schools, inpatient units, and juvenile facilities across the globe, significantly reducing the use of punitive discipline and promoting connection, collaboration, and long-term success for kids. Send us a textWhat if the most important word in your assurance is “lost”? Not because you are drifting, but because “lost” only makes sense if you were owned first. We open the text and follow a through-line from Matthew's “lost sheep of the house of Israel” to Luke's shepherd who goes “until he finds it,” and then to John 10, where Jesus draws a bright line: “I lay down my life for the sheep.” That single claim reframes the whole debate about whether a believer can finally fall away by shifting the weight from the sheep's grip to the Shepherd's shoulders.We walk through the dilemma plainly: if Christ's sheep are lost, they were once His; if they were lost at the fall, then they were His before the fall; if they were His before the fall, Ephesians 1 explains how—chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, predestined to adoption, accepted in the Beloved. The parables do more than inspire; they insist on inevitability. The shepherd does not return without the one. The woman does not shrug at the missing coin. Retrieval is the point, and rejoicing is the outcome. That's why Jesus adds, “Other sheep I have… not of this fold.” The flock expands beyond Israel, yet unites as one fold under one Shepherd, demolishing narrow readings while guarding the core: He dies for His sheep, and they hear His voice.Across these passages, a pattern emerges: ownership precedes loss, loss necessitates pursuit, pursuit guarantees finding, and the hands that hold you are both the Son's and the Father's. That's not an invitation to complacency; it's a foundation for courage, repentance, and steady joy. If God's will is the eternal now, salvation isn't a moving target; it's a decree carried out in time and secured forever. That frame refracts John 10 with sharp clarity: the sheep don't heed thieves because identity precedes response; the Good Shepherd lays down His life for His own; and to be known by Christ is to be loved by Christ in a way that creates faith, endurance, and hope. We also face the hard edge of fairness and reprobation, not to provoke despair but to recover the weight of divine justice and the wonder of sovereign grace.From imputation to resurrection, we show why “eternal life” means exactly what it says. Jesus stacks assurances—“I give them eternal life,” “they shall never perish,” “no one will snatch them out of my hand,” “no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand,” and “I and the Father are one”—so that tired hearts can rest where logic and love meet. In our first story, From a childhood crush to a series of unexpected turns, Aunvada Being shares her story following her lifelong journey of self-discovery and the difficult choices she made along the way. In our next story, Jilnar Mansour, a Lebanese American volunteer in the volatile heart of a Palestinian refugee camp, confronts the harrowing realities of a strict curfew set by the Israeli Defense Forces. Amidst chaos and desperation, she recounts an extraordinary act of quick thinking and unexpected alliance, leading to a moment where vulnerability became a powerful tool for survival. Jilnar is the daughter of an immigrant.  She is a survivor. Jilnar stands for love. Steve Schmidt is a rookie police officer in Kansas City in 1997. Steve responds to a seemingly routine recovered property call that quickly escalates into a tense and dangerous encounter of a burglary in progress. What unfolds is a story of split-second decisions, unexpected revelations, and a profound moment that would forever shape his understanding of duty, perception, and the weight of a single choice. Schmidty is dedicated to positive change. With eight years’ experience as a police officer in Kansas City, Schmidty has developed strong skills in law enforcement and community engagement, all while connecting with thousands of fans as a professional mascot. Now based here in Missoula, Schmidty leads Drive Safe Missoula, a traffic safety initiative within Missoula Public Health that’s focused on saving lives through education. His expertise extends nationally, where he speaks on influencing behavior and leveraging AI for road safety and public health. What begins as an unlikely friendship for Lauren Tobias with a free-spirited dog on The Fort Peck Reservation in northeastern Montana takes a heartbreaking turn when the dog mysteriously disappears. Days of agonizing searching lead to a devastating discovery, a poignant makeshift funeral, and an outpouring of community support. In our first story, Hammy shares his tale about family, faith, and finding yourself. What starts as a journey of self-discovery after a life-altering decision takes an unexpected turn, leading to a hilarious and surprisingly public health crisis on the very first day of a new job. He is a homosexual, and lives in Butte with his partner Clayton—also a homosexual. He's passionate about harm reduction, ending stigma, and walking on his hands. Above all, Hammy believes storytelling can save lives—and he's thrilled to be here tonight to share his story! In our next story, Katie Van Dorn recounts a childhood marked by an unexpected physical challenge to a life defined by adventure and a relentless pursuit of wellness. This is a bit of a strange episode. It's an attempt to explore the difficulty of everything we're supposed to feel in a day. We're in a time when to open the news is to expose yourself to horrors — ones that are a world away, others that are growing ever closer, or perhaps have already made landfall in our lives. And then many of us look up from our screens into a normal spring day. What do you do with that?But that's not new or exceptional. It's the human condition. It exists for all of us, and it always has: life intermingling with death, grief coexisting with joy. Kathryn Schulz's memoir, “Lost & Found,” is all about this experience — the core of her book isn't losing a parent or finding a life partner. It's the “and” that connects them both. How do we hold all that we have to hold, all at once? How do we not feel overwhelmed, or emotionally numbed? I found this to be a beautiful conversation. But it's also a conversation — particularly at the beginning — about loss and grief. That was the part that felt truest to me, and so I hope noting it doesn't warn you off.
