Playlist:James Blake - Like The EndThe Smile - Bodies LaughingNilüfer Yanya - Just a WesternNick Cave & The Bad Seeds - FrogsThe Cure - All I Ever AmIchiko Aoba - LucifèrineOklou - family and friendsJohn Glacier - FoundJamie xx, Kelsey Lu, John Glacier, Panda Bear - DafodilMachinedrum, KUCKA - U_WANTTwo Shell - Stars..Judeline - INRIBikôkô, Irenegarry, AMORE - FORÇAAMORE - DelirioGAZZI, NIDIA - Tus OjosEscuchar audio
L'Rain's Taja Cheek and Ben Chapoteau-Katz on Hockey, Vacations, Radiohead, and the Mysterious Allure of the Saxophone “I Like the Idea of a Basic Bitch Album”: L'Rain, in Conversation With Marlon James 曲目单: (01:15) Keane - Your Eyes Open (04:37) Nourished By Time - Hell of A Ride (08:41) 阿力普 - Way Gulmiding (你是花蕾) (12:56) Kelsey Lu, Yves Tumor - let all the poisons that lurk in the mud seep out (16:38) Daniel Avery - Citizen // Nowhere (20:23) L'Rain - Pet Rock (29:26) L'Rain - I Killed Your Dog (34:36) L'Rain - Monsoon of Regret + Clumsy (41:56) L'Rain - All the Days You Remember (42:30) L'Rain - Oh Wow, a Bird! + Knead Bee (46:42) L'Rain - 5 to 8 Hours a Day (WWwaG) (54:54) L'Rain - New Year's UnResolution L'Rain 专访: (23:51) 三位影响 Taja Cheek 最深的音乐人; (32:45) "I Killed Your Dog" 是一种演绎; (38:34) 什么是 "basic bitch album"? Hallo Freunde hier kommt eine neue Episode meiner REMIXED Reihe... diesmal mit Dj & Producer Steffen Berkhahn aka Dixon Viel Spaß Hello friends here comes a new episode of my REMIXED series... this time with Dj & Producer Steffen Berkhahn aka Dixon Enjoy It ALL REMIXES by Dixon Mixed & Selected by Kurt Kjergaard Bio As a DJ, he cuts a striking figure behind decks, rising from Berlin beginnings among the original pioneers of electronic music. Over a career, he has evolved his sound into something visionary, running renowned record label Innervisions with Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Rädle of Ȃme. His ear for the perfect mix eventually brought down Resident Advisor's Top DJs Poll, after taking out first place for its last four years running. However, Dixon's ambition has driven a calling into wider fields of fashion and technology, expanding what it means to be a contemporary innovator. Early on, a young Dixon was already remixing for the likes of Femi Kuti with his version of “Victim of Life” in 2000. His reputation as a remixer sprung out of edits hidden within his sets, adjusting tracks to give his own mixing an edge. Dixon's edits were for himself, but became infamously in demand for friends and high profile artists, with takes on The XX's “Tides” and Disclosure's “Boiling” in 2013. Major recognition came in 2017 when Depeche Mode asked him to remix their iconic anthem “Cover Me”, and the following year reworking LCD Soundsystem's “i used to”. Recently, Dixon's 2019 interpretation of Kelsey Lu's “Why Knock For You” revealed his genre-bending take on today's dance music. Using music to melt through other art forms, Dixon's strength is found in his transcendent dancefloor moments. Echoed in a flawless aesthetic, his performances feel both safe and unpredictable, with this singular sense of balance seeing his global appeal widen year after year.

On today's episode, Phlemuns founder James Flemons and I discuss the building of community through fashion. Whether it is through his social media presence on Tumblr, Twitter, or Instagram, or through his pop-ups, sample sales, and product drops, James has managed to create a brand built on a consistent open interaction with an ever growing community. His authenticity and honesty are unique and necessary for the industry today and I am grateful for his openness while we discussed his trajectory and journey until today. James and I also discuss fashion's relationship with music, and how important fashion is for artists to create "eras" and visuals. Through his brand Phlemuns, he often collaborates with musicians and has been a part of many iconic moments in music including dressing Solange for her Don't Touch My Hair music video, Lil Nas X for his TIME magazine cover, Lizzo, Kelsey Lu, Rico Nasty, and more. We also talk about some of the challenges of running your own brand in today's industry, his early career working at Opening Ceremony, our personal style journeys, and our mental health journeys. James is a designer, artist, and activist. He is the designer and founder of PHLEMUNS. Singer and cellist Kelsey Lu revels in change. In this episode, she walks through the creation of her newest song, the importance of embracing growth and the singular joy of surprising yourself.
Kevin Beasley thinks a lot about objects. In particular, specific objects that relate to notions of American-ness and Blackness—and ones that are often linked, subtly or not, with violence. Whether with a Cadillac Escalade, a pair of Air Jordans, or an N.F.L. helmet, Beasley finds deep connections to each item he chooses to work with, rigorously studying their multifarious contexts, meanings, and histories. Happy to let artifacts sit in his New York studio for long periods of time, the 36-year-old artist allows them to slowly gestate in his mind until he feels ready to express whatever he has deciphered out of their nature. From there, he turns them into exquisite, alchemical works of art, from tightly packed “slab” sculptures—large, flat resin blocks that embody the density of the symbolic articles that comprise them—to evocative sound installations and performances. Beasley's prolonged approach isn't mere research; it's his way of making space to reflect, to pay more attention, and to grapple with the nuances of the complex, loaded subject matter that's embedded in many of the things that permeate our everyday lives. For Beasley, unpacking subjects charged with underlying connotations is a necessary means for transformation. “You don't have to fully understand what it is you're dealing with,” he says. “It takes time. It takes a revisitation. And that's okay, because that speaks very specifically to a process of learning and understanding.”Beasley's work often draws from his personal history, which has included growing up in admiration of the handiwork of his mechanic father, deejaying at house parties at Yale University, and attending annual family reunions in rural Virginia. It was at one such reunion, in 2011, when Beasley came across a cotton field and picked the plant for the first time—an eerie experience that was, as he considered his ancestors and enslaved peoples who once performed the act, all at once distressing, pleasurable, haunting, and illuminating. The following year, Beasley took his fascination with cotton further—and into the deep South. After finding and purchasing a mid-20th-century cotton gin motor on eBay, he drove from New Haven, Connecticut, to a farm in rural Alabama to collect the object. Beginning as part of an M.F.A. project at Yale, the motor would later evolve into an encased artwork, whirling and surrounded by microphones, inside a pristine, clear, soundproof box at the Whitney Museum of American Art—the potent centerpiece of the artist's breakout exhibition “A View of a Landscape” (2018–2019). (The raw, rancorous noises the motor produced were pumped into an adjacent room that served as a listening gallery.) Later this year, Beasley will extend the project further with a monograph and double LP of the same name, which features sound contributions from artists, musicians, and writers such as Kelsey Lu, Jason Moran, and Fred Moten, whose tracks sample recordings that Beasley made of the churning machine. On this episode, Beasley talks with Spencer about contemplating these particular objects, sound as a means for greater understanding, and the role of repetition in reshaping history.

“Instead, let's consider the dandelion achene. The flower kingdom's lil grey-haired punk.” (Sophia Al-Maria) Released on the Winter Equinox, 21 December 2020, tarax'sup? is a short meditative exercise inspired by the common dandelion (taraxacum officinale) written and performed by Sophia Al-Maria, with a musical score by Kelsey Lu and cover artwork by Tosh Basco (boychild). tarax'sup? is a gift from them to you, and especially for queer kin everywhere. It can be practiced as often as needed and kept as a companion to listen to or read whenever you are in need of grounding. Recorded by Thibault Verdron in Arles, France with special thanks to LUMA Foundation. Mastered by Heba Kadry. tarax'sup? is dedicated to the memory of Rainbow, canine companion of artist Precious Okoyomon. Curated and produced by Tamar Clarke-Brown, Eva Jäger, Melissa Blanchflower and Kay Watson. tarax'sup? is a collaboration between Sophia Al-Maria, Tosh Basco, Kelsey Lu and many more to come. It is a moment of first seeding, a prelude to Sophia Al-Maria's ongoing project with Serpentine, Taraxos, which ruminates on the dandelion to explore the seeding of new ideas, kinship, breathwork and abolitionist thinking.
Singer and cellist Kelsey Lu is joined by Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Lotic, and Fatima Al Qadiri to discuss how their ancestral backgrounds influence the stories they tell, the use of nature as a metaphor, and if they ever feel alone being an artist. Fatima Al Qadiri is an experimental Kuwaiti music producer and artist, currently based in Los Angeles. Last year she received a Cesar nomination for Best Original Score for her work on Mati Diop’s debut feature film Atlantics. Lotic is a Berlin-based electronic musician, born and raised in Houston, Texas. She has worked with and opened for Björk, who described her as “one of the fiercest performer DJs” she has ever heard. Beverly Glenn-Copeland is a Philadelphia-born singer, composer and transgender activist, whose recording career spans fifty years. His music fuses vision, technology, spirituality and place to create a genre-defying sound. And Kelsey is a classically trained cellist from Charlotte, North Carolina. She has collaborated with the likes of Skrillex, Sampha, Solange, and Florence and the Machine, and recently created an audiovisual project of meditative sound baths called Hydroharmonia.
Singer and cellist Kelsey Lu joins gal-dem to discuss religious cults, family love and finding harmony in nature. Growing up in a strict Jehovah’s Witness household, Kelsey Lu often got into trouble for having friends outside of her religion. Delving into her moments of rebellion and the associated guilt that came alongside them, Kelsey Lu explains how she found freedom by learning to accept herself.Find transcripts and show notes for all of Growing up with gal-dem here. Our latest installment of the Talkhouse Podcast at FORM Fest 2019 is a love letter to Chicago's post-rock, punk and emo scenes from the '00s to today. Windy City music legends — and old friends — Trevor de Brauw (Pelican, RLYR, TUSK) and Nate Kinsella (American Football, Joan of Arc, Make Believe) caught up backstage for a warm and hilarious convo, as well as a rad improvised ambient musical collaboration. The guys' talk takes in a lot: playing in bands with family members; having your musician father hate on your experimental work; and balancing parenthood and tour life. Oh and, of course: tone clusters, alternate tunings, death metal, and odd time signatures. This Talkhouse Podcast episode was recorded in the Conservatory backstage at FORM Fest in Arcosanti, Arizona. Pulp Arts and Patreon teamed up to co-present The Conservatory, a dope backstage visual arts installation and recording studio. Talkhouse recorded six episodes there throughout the weekend. You can also check out the other episodes in this series, including Snail Mail with Fred Armisen & Mary Lynn Rajskub, Robert Glasper & Vieux Farka Touré with special guest Lonnie Holley, Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore, and Kelsey Lu with Yrsa Daley-Ward. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer @eliaeinhorn Today’s episode was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. The performance includes Trevor de Brauw on guitar and Nate Kinsella playing the drums. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
Our latest installment of the Talkhouse Podcast at FORM Fest 2019 pairs the brilliant poet/actress Yrsa Daley-Ward with avant-pop singer/songwriter/cellist Kelsey Lu in powerful conversation and musical collaboration. Their talk takes in a lot, including just how much effort is the right amount to put into a piece of art; how to make spaces your own when on the road; and how important the right clothes and hair are to each of their attitudes. They also touch on what it’s like to date a taurus (comfy!), and the devilish fun of writing disco revenge tracks. Hudson Yards may be New York's newest neighborhood, but it has already risen to the #2 spot on PropertyShark's list of the city's most expensive neighborhoods Way back in Episode 7, we talked about the proposal for a public beach in Manhattan, and this week, the Hudson River Park Trust revealed some renderings of what the park and beach may look like 231 years ago on July 26, 1788 — New York becomes the 11th state to join the United States of America This week, the city Department of Health detected mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus within the NYC area. July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, and no human cases of West Nile have been detected yet, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. Wear clothing that covers your skin, use a mosquito repellent containing the chemical repellents DEET or Picaridin, or use a natural repellent containing oil of lemon eucalyptus. Be sure to seal around your window air conditioners so that mosquitoes won't have an easy entrance into your home, and use window screens if you'll be leaving windows open. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 to report standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. 102 years ago on July 28, 1917 — 10,000 people march in the Silent Parade down Fifth Avenue to protest recent violence and riots aimed at Blacks in the South — Learn more about the Silent Parade from the Bowery Boys. 3 years ago on August 2, 2016 — Karina Vetrano is attacked and murdered while jogging in Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach, Queens 74 years ago on July 28, 1945 — A U.S. Army B-25 bomber hits the Empire State Building, killing the three crew members and 11 people in the building 43 years ago on July 29, 1976 — David Berkowitz shoots two young women in the Bronx, beginning the Son of Sam murders that would keep NYC on edge for the next year 103 years ago on July 30, 1916 — The Black Tom explosion near Jersey City levels buildings, kills four, and injures hundreds — Read more from the FBI's history of the explosion 48 years ago on August 1, 1971 — George Harrison and Ravi Shankar organize the Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden The Straphangers Campaign and TransitCenter had some distinguished awards to hand out to two of the city's bus lines this week: In Manhattan, the M14A, which runs from the Lower East Side to Chelsea along 14th Street, received the award for slowest bus line, achieving an average speed of just 4.3mph. When it comes to reliability, Brooklyn's B15 comes in last place, leaving bus riders wondering when or if the next bus would arrive. The slowest buses in Queens and Staten Island are leaving the other boroughs in the dust, racing down city streets at 6.4 and 7.8 mph respectively. Looking back through AGBC history: 1 year ago — Revel Brings Electric Moped Rentals to Brooklyn — The pilot program must have been a success, because by May of 2019 they announced that they would be adding 1,000 more electric mopeds to their fleet and expanding their service area. 2 years ago — De Blasio Takes a Hit in Latest Polling Numbers; Homelessness a Major Issue — Back in 2017, voters surveyed only gave de Blasio a 50% approval rating and he was hammered on the issue of homelessness, with 63% disapproval on his handling of poverty and homelessness and with 73% of respondents ranking homelessness as a very serious problem. Unfortunately those job approval numbers have only gotten worse, sinking down with each survey until he reached a 42% approval when Quinnipiac last asked the question in an April 2019 poll. There are times when I like to take the Take 5 on the road; heading to places where creative people gather, and the conversations around art and music are part and parcel of daily life. Dark Mofo in Hobart is one of those places. A festival set in the middle of winter, in the southernmost city in Australia. When the wind blows, it's coming from Antarctica. The streets light up with red crosses each night to signal some sort of curiosity you should explore within, there are open fires and pagan feasts, and there is music; curated in such a beautiful way it feels like a movement, like a moment. This is the place I met Kelsey Lu. Lu grew up in North Carolina, and was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. Early on, she found the cello, and connected deeply with the strings. She followed her heart, left home, and broke bonds with her family as she headed to New York City to follow her musical dreams. Through her 20's Kelsey Lu found her voice, she collaborated with Solange, and Sampha, she experienced heartache and pain, and she headed west to heal, and begin again. Across five beautiful choices, Lu shared her songs of hope. All women, all powerful, and all tied to the human and artist she has become. Settle in for a beautiful conversation, with Kelsey Lu. Alice Coltrane – 'Journey in Satchidananda' Billie Holiday – 'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do' Des'ree – 'You Gotta Be' Lafawndah – 'Substancia' Chaka Khan – 'I'm Every Woman'

Ok friendos welcome to EP 29 of the show! This one is a real ripper and we've got the scars to prove it. To start off with we try two wildly different beers: A märzen from Red Collar brewing and wild ale blend from Bellwoods Brewery out in Toronto. Our album deep dive is the 2012 debut album from Brooklyn hipsters Hospitality. We chat about it's charming as heck pop constructions and articulated millennial angst. Tristan gets the name of one of the songs wrong pretty much every single time and he begs forgiveness. For movie time with Tristan and Mick we take a stroll down memory lane and watch the anime masterpiece Macross Plus. We don't so much as analyze its themes or narrative choices as we do gush about how awesome it still is. New and noteworthy from Jakob Ogawa, Kelsey Lu, Haley Heynderickx, and Kindness. Find the show on itunes or spotify. rate and subscribe to stay up to date on all of our EPs and let us know what you think. To listen to all the tracks we discuss find our EP29 playlist on Apple Music. For more content from the show follow us on Instagram and Facebook. Thanks for listening and have a great day!
